Heartfelt help for breast cancer sufferers ACTION from the heart by the Turre sewing circle is set to help breast cancer sufferers following surgery. The ladies have been putting their skills with needle and thread to excellent use, making dozens of heart-shaped pads from soft, washable materials to go under the arm and support sore areas post op. The sewing group’s Kim Gibson told the Euro Weekly News she first heard about the surgery pads idea from a male friend who had had breast cancer. He was offered one to help him drive, sleep and get on with daily life with the wound site protected. When Kim saw the pads another friend made back in the UK she was, she said, “so impressed I brought the pattern to our sewing group and asked if anyone would like to help, which they all did.” Kim explained that most breast cancer sufferers lose lymph nodes, hence the heart shape is ideal for fitting snugly in the underarm area. “They really do make a difference!”, commented MACS representative Aileen Cameron when the sewing group donated their first batch of hearts to the cancer support charity last week.

WHOLEHEARTED: The Turre sewing circle ladies are donating the hand-made pads to MACS. “They really do make a difference,” the cancer support group’s Aileen Cameron said (left).
“It’s somebody saying I know you’re going through a lot and this is something to say we’re thinking of you, as well as the practicalities of it. “The fact they’re heart-shaped also shows they’re coming from love to somebody who’s going through treatment. It’s a lovely, lovely thing to do.” MACS will give out the pads to people the charity helps and supports, including at its monthly patient survivor and care giver meetings. The meetings are, Aileen explained, “a
chance for people to get together, have a coffee and a chat, to meet other people going through similar things and to just not feel alone. “It’s having a chance to be around people who understand what you’re going through. And that makes a heck of a difference.” The sewing group is going to keep on producing the pads and supporting MACS, Kim said. She now hopes more individuals or groups will be inspired to follow the Turre seamstresses’ example.

Notorious drug clan busted EIGHT members of the same family are under arrest following a two-year police investigation into a large-scale drug cultivation and trafficking network. Police launched operation Corso at the end of 2017 to uncover the criminal activities of the ‘Los Antones’ clan. Investigations revealed a highly organised pyramid-structure dedicated to growing, buying and selling large quantities of marihuana.
The clan had four cannabis plantations in Cosario de Vicar, but according to police when demand for the drug outstripped their own supply they acquired more from other sources elsewhere in Spain. The gang used a property in a rural area of Vicar for vacuum packing and storing the marihuana . They also had a garage in Aguadulce in which they hid vehicles used for drug deliveries and weapons.
Police said the gang members were highly professional criminals with plenty of money at their disposal. They also used violence and intimidation to ensure the smooth running of their illegal activities. The searches resulted in the seizure of 130 kilos of vacuum packed marihuana, 13 automatic and semi-automatic weapons plus ammunition, €9,000 in cash, and nine high-end vehicles, one of which was bulletproof.

DEVOTED: Figurines of the Virgen del Carmen are carried into the sea for the fiesta.
Holy waters THIS picture of religious devotees lowering a figurine of the Virgin Mary into the sea comes as Spain prepares to mark the Virgen del Carmen fiesta on Tuesday. The Festival of Our Lady of Carmen, to give the fiesta its full name, is celebrated in Spain and across Latin America every July 16. It is particularly popular in coastal areas as the Carmen incarnation of the Virgin Mary is commonly associated with the sea. The name Carmen comes from the holy mountain of
Mount Carmel in modern-day Israel. The link between the Virgen del Carmen and the sea forms the centrepiece of the festival when the figure of the Virgin Mary is carried into the water by worshippers. The festival stems from a visitation that English prior Saint Simon Stock was said have experienced on July 16, 1251. The Virgen del Carmen is said to have appeared to him and told him she would free anyone who worshipped her from going to purgatory
after their death. Devotion to the Virgin soon spread and she became popular with fishermen and sailors. The modern-day fiesta sees small boats join devotees of the virgin for the lowering of the figurine into the water. A blessing of the sea to guarantee good catches for fishermen throughout the following year also takes place. Vessels are typically decorated for the event which also features parties and fireworks displays.

RUBBISH HEAP: Volunteers retrieved all manner of discarded items, which they then sorted for recycling.
Blitz on seabed trash TWENTY kilos of cardboard, 120 drinks cans, 500 glass bottles, 1,000 cigarette butts, 50 plastic bottles and packaging of all kinds: volunteers retrieved all this and more from the seabed in front of San Nicolas beach in Adra in just one morning. Around 50 people took part in the local council’s ‘Clean Waters’ initiative on Sunday, an event supported by local scuba diving and adventure sports clubs. Volunteers classified all the collected items for recycling in the relevant bins. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes said initiatives of this kind are vital. “The way to help our
marine biodiversity to survive is by freeing it of all the rubbish which ends up at the bottom of our seas and oceans,” Cortes commented. The mayor highlighted “the need to raise awareness among everyone, from the youngest to the oldest, about the importance of avoiding dumping any kind of waste outside the bins available for this purpose.” He pointed out that using recycling bins “costs nothing,” adding, “with everyone doing their bit we can enjoy a cleaner Adra, which is more respectful of the environment and the creatures which live in it, including the species on our coast’s seabed.”

Seeking support for cat neutering PAWS-PATAS is seeking the support of local authorities for its feral cat neutering campaign. “We could save thousands of cats from suffering and endless unwanted kittens being born into disease and starvation,” according to the animal charity’s Chrissie Cremore. “We have a large UK charity prepared to send vets and nurses over for a period of two weeks, possibly four times per year”, Chrissie told the Euro Weekly News. “Each visit could neuter 300 cats, and in time the TNR (trapping, neutering and returning) campaign could cover a 100-mile radius around Mojacar. We have the premises and a local vet interested in heading this project. What we desperately need now is the support of town halls and the Spanish College of Veterinary Surgeons,” Chrissie explained. PAWS-PATAS President Jacqueline Morris plans to visit local councils and explain what the charity wants in a bid to get their backing for the neutering campaign. THE WEEK IN POLITICS TOP brass of the left-leaning Partido Socialista (PSOE) met ahead of talks with the leftist Podemos to form a government, their only viable option for power. Party leader and acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met with his Podemos counterpart Pablo Iglesias on Tuesday to try and put an agreement for government together. Iglesias was still pushing for members of his party to be given briefs in Sanchez’s Council of Ministers. Sanchez said he thought such an arrangement would leave the government working at cross purposes. “We do not need two governments in one, but a government with a coherent message,” the acting prime minister said. However, Sanchez added he would be willing to appoint independent ministers, a thinly-veiled concession to Iglesias who could nominate figures from outside his party.

DEAL PITCH: Sanchez and other PSOE figures discussed the offer on Monday. The Podemos leader said on Tuesday his party would back PSOE on foreign policy and on the Catalan independence question, showing he has backed down in some areas. “We do not have red lines. We understand, because of the balance of the parties, that the leadership of the government on Cataluña must fall with PSOE,” Podemos sources said.
The declaration led to a sharp rebuke from PSOE acting Defence Minister Margarita Robles who accused Iglesias of changing its position on Cataluña to get a seat at the table. “I do not think it’s coherent. If you have a position you have to stick to it,” she said. Iglesias said his party would push for dialogue on the issue but added Podemos’ focus remained on securing social jus-
tice. The latest moves towards forming a government come as Sanchez prepares to face the Congress of Deputies investiture vote from Monday July 22. Sanchez met with conservative Partido Popular (PP) leader Pablo Casado to try and persuade him to abstain in the vote, making it easier for PSOE to secure power. Casado said he would vote no because his responsibility lies in opposing the government. A rift has also opened between PSOE and the centrist Ciudadanos opened after PSOE Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said their siding with the PP and far-right Vox threatened LGBTQ rights. The angry reaction from Ciudadanos leader Albert Rivera makes it more likely his party will also vote against the investiture.
One year in CONSERVATIVE Partido Popular (PP) leader Pablo Casado marks one year in the party’s top job this month. Casado’s time at the head of the party has seen it go through some of its toughest times in its history, including a disastrous election result in April. It will be for future historians to judge how much responsibility for the wiping out of around half of the party’s Congress of Deputies members falls with Casado. But it is clear that Casado’s initial strategy for the party which saw him move further to the right did not pay dividends. The logic was clear enough. Casado hoped to stave off the threat from the insurgent far-right Vox on his right flank while differentiating the PP from the centrist Ciudadanos. While some may argue he bungled that election, Casado showed his talent for ideological pivoting when he adopted a more centrist message following the defeat. The PP was able to regain momentum during local and regional elections in May. It held onto many of its heartlands while scoring some notable victories, including installing one of its own as Madrid mayor. Casado will have to continue delivering to avoid a future catastrophe.
Poll tracker: • Partido Socialista (PSOE): 31.2 per cent, 134 seats • Partido Popular (PP): 17.4 per cent, 71 seats • Ciudadanos: 16.6 per cent, 63 seats • Unidos Podemos: 13.1 per cent, 35 seats • Result: PSOE largest party, no overall control

Sentenced for truancy THE parents of a 13-year-old girl who missed more than 100 classes have been given a suspended prison sentence for letting her play truant. Huelva’s Provincial Court of Huelva confirmed a lower court’s sentence of three months, suspended for two years, imprisonment for ‘a crime against family relations.’ According to the sentence, the judge considered it proven that from 2011 to 2014, the parents ‘had failed in their duties’ to make sure she received an education. The court heard that the school and social services had promptly notified the parents of the girl’s truancy on numerous occasions. The judge decided that the parents had deliberately failed to do anything about the girl’s school absenses.

AROUND one in every three British expatriates, including in Spain, are looking to get citizenship or permanent residency in their host countries because of Brexit, a survey shows. CurrencyFair’s survey of 664 expatriates showed they tended to be more worried about Brexit than those in Britain. A total of 42 per cent of expatriates said they were concerned about Brexit’s impact on debt versus 20 per cent of British residents. More than half of expatriates said they were worried about Brexit’s impact on their retirement plans compared to 34 per cent in Britain. CurrencyFair CEO Paul Byrne said expatriates were looking to avoid possible negative economic consequences. “Our research indicates that Brexit may be forcing the hand of expats to seek citizenship they might not otherwise seek,” he said. A total of 52 per cent of expatriates said they think Brexit will push up living costs compared to 41 per cent of in Britain. A total of 34 per cent of expatriates said they were currently looking at becoming residents and citizens and a further 5 per cent said they would get do so in the event of a hard Brexit.
BREXIT EXTRA No-deal planning
Bid to stop no-deal By Joe Gerrard BRITISH parliamentarians moved to stop Prime Minister Theresa May’s successor from taking Britain out of the EU without a deal this week amidst growing concerns about a disorderly Brexit. MPs from both the ruling Conservatives and the opposition Labour party have floated plans to stop either Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt railroading a no-deal past lawmakers. Conservative Dominic Grieve is attempting to force the government to make a statement on Northern Ireland in October, making attempts to suspend parliament at that time illegal. Johnson said he would consider suspending, or proroguing, parliament if it meant he could secure Brexit. That provoked a backlash including from former leadership rival Sajid Javid who said it would be undemocratic. Another former rival, International Development Secretary Rory Stewart, said he would help organise an ‘alternative parliament’ to

Current Foreign Secretary Hunt said he would consider delaying Brexit beyond the deadline if it meant securing changes to May’s deal. It follows comments from former Civil Service Brexit head Philip Rycroft who said ‘everyone’ should be worried about a no-deal.
BRITISH companies invested more than €3.1 billion in Spain in 2018, the secondhighest amount of any country according to data from International Financial Analysts which showed spending has grown every year since the EU referendum.
Bad impact THE International Airlines Group (IAG) which owns British Airways and Iberia told investors Brexit is creating uncertainty and is having an ‘adverse’ impact on business.

CHECK-IN SCAN, an innovative mobile app which saves vacation rental hosts time and aggravation when registering holiday guests, is making waves. The Mijas-based enterprise which created the app has been invited to compete in the prestigious VRTECH 2019 awards to find the best technology start-up for the vacation rental industry. The competition winner can expect industrywide recognition, the possibility of investments and an undisclosed prize. Just one year after launching, Check-in Scan is processing one holiday guest ID every 20 seconds, saving clients hours in complying with Spanish holiday rentals legal requirements. Over 8,000 properties throughout Spain are using the Check-in Scan system, including hotels, hostals and campsites, as well as holiday rentals. The app also collaborates with other industry players, including Booking.com. Recent regulatory changes require holiday owners and rental companies to register their guests with local authorities/police within 24 hours of arrival. The measure involves collecting the identity documents of all guests staying in accommodation. Guests have to sign a ‘Parte de Viajeros’ arrival form, which must be kept on file for three years in case of police inspection. The holiday owner or rental company must also enter the guest identity

Donating blood in Spain LIVING in Spain can bring with it an array of issues which may not have been encountered when living in the UK. There are lots of things to consider, and we are here to help try to make the transition and life in Spain a little easier by compiling a series of helpful facts and figures relating to a variety of topics. In Spain, Blood Components and Services are provided by 17 Regional Blood Transfusion Services. Despite their autonomous operations management, every regional service is fully incorporated into a unique and common Public National Health System, supplying a cohesive blood transfusion care to all citizens, residents, and visitors in Spain based on 100 per cent voluntary and non-remunerated blood donation. For more general information, visit www.msps.es. Anyone who has lived continuously in the UK between 1980 and 1996 (a minimum of one year) will not be able to donate blood in Spain due to the risk of transmitting mad cow disease. Similarly, there are restrictions if you have received a blood transfer in the UK. However, each region may have different rules about donation. Call the donation helpline on 935 573 500. Alternatively, visit www.donorsang.gencat.cat to find out if you are eligible. If you are eligible, you can give blood at your local hospital, or via the Spanish Red Cross (Cruz Roja) at one of their clinics, or in one of their mobile units. You can check dates and locations by visiting www.donarsangre.org. A donor card is not necessary to give blood. On the first visit you will have to provide DNI, NIE, passport or a driving licence. If you are already registered in the Blood Bank, you only need a donor card or a document with your name and surname. The process of blood donation takes just 10 minutes in which 450 ml are collected (equating to 10 per cent of the total blood circulation of an adult person). Despite huge technological advances, the only way for hospitals to obtain blood is through the generosity of the public. The blood is carefully screened for disease to make sure it is safe. After a tattoo, you must wait four months to be eligible to donate. After surgery, the exclusion period will depend on the type of intervention. After minor surgical procedures, you cannot donate blood for seven days or until you are fully recovered. After undergoing major surgery, you will not be able to donate blood for four months. The rarest blood type is AB, present in 1 per cent of Caucasians, according to research by the America Red Cross. Blood transfusions are carried out daily in Spanish hospitals with more than 6,200 patients being given them, of whom almost a quarter are fighting cancer and a similar figure receiving transfusions during or after surgery. Spain has around two million donors in total, but needs closer to four million. This information is for guidance only, and should not be taken as legal advice. If in any doubt, seek professional help.

EU watchdog rule worries
THE EU’s banking regulator has said banks across the bloc, including those in Spain, are some €135 billion short on capital reserves required under new international rules. The European Banking Authority (EBA) said the bloc’s largest banks would have to increase the amount of funds they hold in reserve to comply with Basel IV rules. The new regulations were brought to ensure banks had enough capital to stave off losses and cash flow problems in the event of a crisis like that of 2008.

Minister’s top earner tax call
LARGE corporations, estates, entities and the highest earners in Spain must pay more taxes to help support public services, the country’s acting Finance Minister has said. Maria Jesus Montere said in an interview with the Antena 3 TV channel that only 0.3 per cent of the Treasury’s revenue comes from the richest individuals and companies. That is far below the equivalent figure for other European countries, the minister added. “There are companies who are enjoying tax credits and exemptions similar to those they enjoyed before the last recession but they are contributing
By Joe Gerrard half of what they did in 2007 and 2008,” Montero said. “Therefore we should review this,” she added. Far-reaching tax changes planned by Montero would also see the Catholic Church, long exempt from paying levies, charged some fees. The Finance Minister said claims made by some smaller companies and entities that they received letters from the Treasury ordering them to pay corporation tax did not correspond to reality. The Treasury continues to focus its
efforts on going after ‘big fraudsters,’ she added. “It would be of little logic and little common sense to address small fraud that, although we must pursue it, does not compare to big fraud and tax evasion,” Montero said. Montero’s fiscal policy has been characterised by higher government spending and higher taxes to support it since she took office in June 2018. Her draft budget for this year would have seen tax hikes for large companies including multinational technology firms such as Google and Facebook if it had passed.

CEO Adolfo Rebollo and Corporate Development Director Alex Belaustegi said the firm was hoping to expand into Japan and other countries with joint ventures and local partnerships. The plan comes after Ingeteam grew by 47 per cent during the last three years. It made net profits of €14.5 million in 2018, 37 per cent more than in 2017.

Renfe said the total cost of the purchase would be €473.9 million when the costs of storing and maintaining the trains during the next 15 years are included. The trains are being bought to help Renfe renew its rolling stock and move from diesel to electric powered engines. The new trains will be made up of three carriages and a generator, have top speeds of 160 kilometres per hour and will feature free wifi for travellers.
Harvest fall SPAIN’S cereal crop harvest is expected to be 17.4 million tons this year, 27.3 per cent less than in 2019 according to agro-food co-operatives who said it was due to less rain and May and June being hotter than usual.
Bank ruling MADRID’S Provincial Court has ruled a shareholder ’s request filed to bring in bankruptcy administrators to the now defunct Popular Bank cannot be admitted because the procedure can only be used for companies which have dissolved or liquidated.
Court rules pension rate ‘sexist’ SPAIN’S acting Welfare Minister said pensions for part-time workers will be reviewed after the country’s Constitutional Court ruled current rates discriminated against women. Magdalena Valerio said changes would be implemented as soon as possible. Social Security officials have been assessing the issue since the EU’s Court of Justice stated rates may break antisexism laws.
Rate changes will not affect pension supplements or payments already settled, Valerio added. It comes after the Constitutional Court ruled part-time pension rates were indirectly sexist because they did not match with full-time payments and most part-time workers are women. The ruling came after university professor Simeo Miquel Roe filed a case in a Lleida Court in Cataluña.

New tax advisor code of conduct TWO new best practice codes have been brought in to cover tax advisors following their approval by an industry body. The Forum of Associations of Tax Professions approved the new conduct codes which commits companies and workers to report rule breakers. Both codes will apply to members of the forum, with one covering associations and the other professionals, according to the Finance Ministry. Rules in the code for professionals include requiring them to advise their clients against actions which could pose ‘important’ fiscal risks. These include registering companies in overseas tax havens, the way double-entry bookkeeping is used and payments above legal limits. The Treasury Ministry said adherence to the code would be monitored by the Tax Agency. Lists of tax advisor associations, colleges and intermediaries will be published. A new logo is set to be created for professionals to use to show they are signed up to the code. The Tax Agency will also communicate with and monitor professionals and signatory associations.

Recovery ‘headwinds’ EUROZONE economic recovery continues to face headwinds but risks are currently low, according to the Spanish Vice President of the European Central Bank (ECB). Luis de Guindos said factors including the ongoing trade war between the US, China and EU, difficulties in emerging markets and Brexit uncertainty are dampening eurozone growth. The ECB should loosen the money supply to buoy growth and ensure inflation remains close to its targeted rate of just below 2 per cent, the vice president added. Policymakers should ensure that making money more readily available does not have unwanted side effects and create further risks, he said. De Guindos said it would be important for financial firms and other companies to strengthen their balance sheets to guard against shocks to the economic system. “Fortunately, banks have done exactly that in the last decade,” de Guindos said. The vice president said there had been advances in regulations since the last recession. Rules need to be introduced to cover non-banking financial entities such

De Guindos’ comments come as concerns continue over growth in the eurozone overall, in part due to Italy’s chronically low growth since the debt crisis and the fallout from Brexit. The ECB decided to revise its forecasts for eurozone economic output growth
(Gross Domestic Product, GDP) this year from 1.7 per cent to 1.1 per cent. Spain continues to buck the eurozone trend, with the country’s GDP expected to grow by 2.2 per cent this year, according to government forecasts. Spanish GDP was around €1.2 trillion last year, according to National Institute of Statistics (INE) data.
SPANISH company Ferrovial has been awarded a contract worth €274 million to build a new water treatment plant in Texas in the US and expand an existing one, both of which are near to Houston.

What’s in a name… continued
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT LAST week you may remember I wrote about the extraordinary treatment my estranged wife Pauline, while en route to Mallorca, received at the easyJet boarding gate of Belfast International Airport. The following day I called easyJet for an explanation. After reaching a couple of ‘robots’- one of which informed me that my call was being recorded - I finally managed to connect with another human being. After confirming that I too was recording the conversation (a statement which immediately brought a distinct change of tone!) I commenced to put forward my concerns. ‘Why’, I began, ‘was Pauline Graham asked to pay £80 to board her designated aircraft, because the name on her passport differed slightly to the one on her boarding card’? ‘This is company policy,’ was the somewhat terse reply. ‘It is a charge administered for a change of name on the boarding card.’ Frankly this explanation conjured up a whole host of queries I could have put forward. Ie how did they issue a receipt if the payment was in cash? How did the company, at that point, actually manage to change the boarding card name? Did this mean that were I a fugitive, or a terrorist, I could become another person between the boarding gate and the aircraft simply by parting with £80? etc etc. However, since this was
REFUND: Airline issued reimbursement.
‘company policy,’ I decided not to enter these particular realms of exploration and moved on to my next, and to my mind, far more important inquiry. ‘Why,’ I continued, did a member of staff, in full view and hearing of the other passengers, vir-
tually accuse a passenger of tampering with her own passport? I explained that when Pauline pointed out that the Embassy had printed her birth certificate name (which did in fact comply with the boarding card) on the ‘remarks page’ the
somewhat officious staff member had loudly declared that the name had ‘in no way’ been put there by the Embassy and the line of print was in fact ‘crooked.’ At this revelation there was a long pause from the company representative. When she finally spoke again, her somewhat superior attitude of earlier had subdued considerably. ‘I need to consult with my superior on that,’ she announced tentatively. After a few minutes she was back. ‘If this indeed was the case,’ she said apologetically, ‘our staff member was completely out of order and we will be investigating your complaint thoroughly. Meanwhile we are refunding your £80 immediately and apologise for any inconvenience caused.’ I thanked her, but added that I required a full letter of apology and also some assurance that the staff member in question would be reprimanded for her actions. I was assured that if I put it all in writing, they would indeed comply with my wishes. So well done easyJet. At least they owned up to their responsibilities. It didn’t however explain the fact that I later discovered a further £40 had surreptitiously been removed from the account of the person who booked the ticket and equally mysteriously, refunded shortly after my altercation. Funny that! Back to the normal ‘rants’ next week folks. ‘Whatever ya do - don’t panic’! Keep the faith Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

Emma pointed out that while the company is well-known for Funeral Plans and the support, removing the burden of arranging a funeral for grieving loved ones at what can be a very difficult and upsetting time, what you may not be aware of is the company also offers additional Expat Services to all expatriates living in Spain. In addition to Funeral Plans, Golden Leaves also offers Health Insurance, General Insurances, Legal Services, NIE/Residencia Assistance, Wealth Management and Currency Exchange, which makes Golden Leaves International a one-stop shop, for all your expatriate needs, while offering a friendly, professional and knowledgeable service to their customers. They will guide you through every step of the way from arranging quotes and appointments, answering any questions to making a claim, which we all know can be a very stressful situation. charge on contents for valuables, bicycle and golf equipment are covered all risk in Spain only.
Private Health Insurance We spoke with Private Health Insurance Specialist Victoria, she explained how the Health Insurance policies that Golden Leaves offer are very comprehensive and good value for money. They also offer a lot of benefits such as, having no co-payments, using English-speaking doctors at some of the top hospitals in Spain, do not have waiting lists, covers emergency travel care abroad and includes annual checkups, dental cover, multi policy discounts, ambulance and emergency cover. Victoria is always on hand and happy to help each client through every aspect of Private Health Insurance. For example, if you are applying for a health policy to assist in obtaining your Residencia, Victoria will book the appointment for you, fill in the forms and advise you on all the documentation required. She always goes the extra mile! Victoria’s client says: “I have been very pleased with the Private Health Insurance that Golden Leaves provided for me. Victoria talked me through everything and answered all my questions promptly. Since I have taken out the insurance I have had continued help from Victoria if needed. No hesitation in recommending health insurance with Golden Leaves.” General Insurance General Insurance Specialist, Emma was also on hand to give us a little insight in to their General Insurances. Golden Leaves offer a wide range of general insurance products such as Travel, Car, Home, Marine and Business insurance.
Car Golden Leaves can provide competitive Car Insurance and they currently insure cars registered in Spain, UK, Gibraltar and Portugal. Emma highlighted that they will accept No Claims Bonuses (NCB) from previous policies, even if the bonus was not earned in Spain and how they can offer protection for your NCB. Other benefits of taking insurance with Golden Leaves is they also offer age discounts and there is an option to restrict named drivers, which could, potentially, lower your annual premium further and in turn, save you money! Emma’s clients say: “From the first time I spoke with Emma, I felt I was talking to someone who actually cared about making sure I had the right product with the right cover at the right price. Emma had time to listen to me and I felt safe in taking out insurance with her. She worked hard to obtain the very best prices for me and beat my previous insurer by miles for better cover. “So now all my insurance, for the house, cars and scooter is all in one place with Emma and Golden Leaves. I have one contact for claims, renewals and queries, that I have complete 100 per cent confidence and trust in.”
We gained a few tips from Emma, from her experience in General Insurance. If you plan to travel: Not many people are aware once you are a legal resident in Spain, then you do not have automatic free and unlimited access to the NHS, when you travel to the UK. They also offer a policy for Communities and Community Associations. Emma added, “It is important to be open with your insurers, as there are factors
that could affect the policy and indeed whether you will continue to be insured if you do not do this, eg you must let the insurers know if you are going to let your property out on a short or long term basis.” Emma also noted that in December the policies allow an additional 10 per cent cover for any Christmas shopping, 25 per cent free of

I like a bit of tradition MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man IN a ‘move with the times,’ it has been announced that Wimbledon umpires will stop referring to women athletes as ‘Ms,’ ‘Miss,’ or ‘Mrs,’ and instead refer to them by their last name - like they do in the men’s division. Really? A move with the times? I’m now officially calling bull***t on all this. Who cares? I bet not one lady tennis player has requested this. It’s outside pressure. Wimbledon is the last place where everything is a tradition. The players must wear all white; you drink Pimms and have strawberries and cream. Members of the armed forces show you to your seat. I need to go back in time for a bit. I want to use my Co-op divi number when I go shopping. I want my Green Shield stamps and my Embassy coupons that Mrs S actually used to pay for her driving lessons when she was 17. I want to try and hold a chocolate wagon wheel in one hand with my hot chocolate drink after going to the swimming baths. If I see a member of the opposite sex, or even
the same, I want to say, ‘Hi, you look nice today’ without fear of being treated like a sex offender. I want to be able to disagree or, in some cases, agree with something without the fear of being called racist, homophobic or misogynistic. I want my opinions to be heard without someone screaming at me. I want to walk through London at night without worrying I’m going to get stabbed just because I’m in the wrong place at the wrong time. I want to go out like I used to when I was young and just have fun with my mates without posting every single move on Facebook or Instagram. I want to be able to search the internet with the likes of WebCrawler and Lycos that just gave me the info I needed. Now things pop up for me to agree to and everything I do is tracked. I want to go to McDonald’s without 15 minutes later getting McDonald’s adverts on all my devices because I happen to have an iPhone. I guess I’m saying STOP!! Give me, and people like me, a break. Stop telling me what I need - I know what I need and I need to watch Wimbledon with the ladies still being called Ms, Mrs or Miss because it’s not doing any harm and I like a bit of tradition in my old age!

Pause for self-giving A FRIEND recently asked why I was so committed to Church, giving it so much of my time and money, and seemed totally amazed when I simply replied ‘I don’t.’ But as a Christian, I strongly believe that nothing I have is my own. My life, my abilities and my possessions aren’t mine to use selfishly as I wish, but are lent to me by God, to use in His service during my brief stay on this Earth. So as all belongs to God, then it’s no big deal to return much of it to be used as He sees fit. The question for me, as a Christian, shouldn’t be ‘How much can I afford to give to God?’ but rather ‘How much of His wealth would God be happy for me to squander on myself?’ The God I love and worship isn’t mean or penny-pinching, so wants us to enjoy and get the most out of the life He’s prepared for us, and doesn’t therefore resent our using the resources He’s provided, but we do need to remember they are His, and in like manner, take care that we don’t waste them.
Some 3,000 years ago, David, the greatest of all the kings of Israel came to a similar conclusion as he saw his donation to a temple building fund as an integral part of his worship of God. His words on that occasion exemplify the Christian attitude to giving: “who am I that I should be permitted to give anything to you? Everything we have has come from you, and we only give you what is yours already!” You see, our giving to God through the Church is so much more than a membership fee (and we’re all happy to spend large sums on membership of whatever particular club takes our fancy), this is a privilege that we can share in God’s work on Earth. The time, skill or money that I return to Him is His already, and a real part of my worship, or recognition of His greatness. And it’s not how much I give that matters, but like the widow in Luke’s record who gave the smallest coin available, how much I keep for myself!

TO the editor and Nicole King, Nicole’s report on losing her car’s number plate is comparable with my wife’s and my experience a few months ago when, while in a queue to join the highway near where we live, a new BMW One-Series had exactly the same Registration Number as our Ford Focus. The driver must have noticed that I had seen the number and when I tried to keep up with him to talk (perhaps) with the driver, he sped off at high speeds, weaving in and out of other cars, he escaped but to me that would indicate that he knew of his ‘crime.’ I made up a letter in Spanish, printed it and took it to the Local Police, advised them and obtained a Crime Report number, and had the copy signed and stamped. At least if we received any fines then we would be covered if the offending car drivers had committed them. One other point regarding being involved in an accident, never apologise especially with witnesses present, and never accept what a police officer writes on the accident form especially if the other driver is Spanish. Do not sign the form if you do not understand what he has written. This possibility definitely exists that the police officer will try to show that you were responsible and I speak from experience. But I used to be a police expert witness in South Africa with the job of investigating accidents and who was to blame and give evidence in the subsequent Court case. So the Guardia Civil Officer’s report was disregarded by the insurance companies. Another, never wear anything in or over your ears while driving, It is against the Law. Quintessentially expat DEAR Ed I read with interest that our very own press magnates, Michel and Steven, owners of your fine newspaper were invited to celebrate Her Majesty’s The Queen’s birthday at the British Embassy in Madrid. An event hosted by the British Ambassador himself. The event seemed so quintessentially expat English, a garden party in a foreign place. The question I know all of your readers will be asking is. Did they serve Ferrero-Rocher? Lesley Reed

Same plate problem What’s the attraction? DEAR Ed So Glastonbury went ahead (ended June 30) and the temperature went into the 30’s. Now it is a few years since I went to a pop-festival (indeed are they still even called that?) and let’s just say that unless the hygiene facilities have undergone a total revolution then the stench must have been unbelievable! Why oh why are these events still popular? Having paid a king’s ransom, the food is atrocious, you camp in a veritable swamp and you get to watch act after second rate act from a distance of a mile, then when the

THE San Fermin Running of the Bulls festival takes place in Navarra’s Pamplona this week, with calls to end it and other similar fiestas as strong as ever. Celebrations to open San Fermin began on Saturday before the runs started on Sunday. It will continue until this Sunday when the fiesta closes, with thousands expected to attend. The festival already claimed its first casualties early on this week. Three, two US citizens and one Spanish runner, were gored at the weekend and at least one needed surgery, according to emergency services. San Fermin has claimed the lives of at least 16 people since records began in 1910. Amidst reports of injuries being inflicted on runners, it can be tempting to overlook the suffering endured by animals forced to take part in the spectacle. The debate on San Fermin and bullfights in general is alive and well in Spain. The country continues to wrestle with whether to ditch the sport or retain what some see as a fundamental feature of Spanish culture. Activists AnimaNaturales and PETA staged protests against San Fermin in Pamplona on Friday. Those came as PACMA launched a campaign to stop the use of calves in bercerradas bullfights across the country. The Balearic Islands, Canary Islands and Cataluña have all tried to ban bullfighting altogether. As opposition gathers momentum, Spain may now have to consider calling time on San Fermin and other bull-related spectacles.
Now we want to hear your views. YOUR PAPER - YOUR VOICE - YOUR OPINION www.euroweeklynews.com Readers who have missed correspondence can see all letters - which can be edited before publication - posted on: www.euroweeklynews.com.

When rape isn’t rape I think on this subject Spain still lives in the dark ages. Eleni Lolkema No, rape is rape, against a woman’s wishes. No means No. Rape is always fear and intimidation whether it’s actual or inferred. Vivienne Mallinder Fighting back is not a good option, sometimes that is what gets you killed. When there is a gang of them that in itself is violent and intimidating. If you have been given a date rape drug that makes you passive and unable to fight back it is still rape. Sometimes shutting down is the only way to survive. If you are underage it is always rape as you are not of age to give consent. Katrina Edbrooke

AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) Don't allow an open-ended offer to muddle your mind. There is no need for an immediate decision and this may be too soon for a positive move. A sense of urgency may be put down to practical reasons when, in fact, it is no such thing. A feeling of insecurity is more likely to be the trigger to uncertainty.
PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Are things going swimmingly? Good. Maybe you had forgotten how to have real fun. Remember when you were a child? Life was so simple. Relax and be that child again. If some old fogey accuses you of being silly, feel sorry for them.
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Awkward situations usually bring out the best in you and this week proves that. In the longer term, you will be grateful to those making things difficult now.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Get out in the fresh air as much as possible and be kind to your body. You may have neglected yourself because you have been such a busy bee of late. What about a trip to the seaside or a walk in the hills? Maybe a trip to the local cocktail bar is more your style! Whatever puts a spring in your step will be good.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) A fleeting meeting stirs feelings that you thought were dead. This could be good if it reminds you of how life can be, or bad if it makes you think of missed opportunities. It is never too late to make a fresh start. Why not go on that painting holiday or stamp-collecting weekend? Pole dancing anyone?
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Someone really has rattled your tree, but try to refrain from throwing coconuts on their head. It is much more effective to be charming and get them confused.

WHEN I become Prime Minister (it’s between you and me now, Boris!) there’ll be some new laws... about queuing. First off, airports. The thing that would make the most significant difference to queuing time is people being ready when they get to the top of the security queue. It puzzles me why coats and belts aren’t off, laptops out and toiletry bags ready by the time they get to the sorting table. It hardly comes as a complete surprise, they can see everyone else doing it, and as for the lady (sorry, ladies, but it IS often one of us!) who holds up everyone else with her umpteen liquids... And don’t get me started on queues in pubs. My next law as PM will be this: anyone wanting cocktails must stand in a separate queue. So people like me (ie impatient folk) won’t any longer be held up by people wanting a Strawberry Rosé Sangria or a Bahama Mama Spritzer that the barman’s never heard of and hasn’t a clue how to make. And then there’s the queue at the cash machine to get some money before you even get to the pub. You find you’re behind a couple who decide to have a no-holds-barred row af-
CASSANDRA NASH A WEEKLY LOOK - and not entirely impartial reaction to the Spanish political scene
SO now we know. Pedro Sanchez has fixed the Investiture debate for July 22 and we know that if there’s no overall majority on July 23 - and that’s something we do know, because he won’t have one - there will be a second vote on July 24. If there is enough support and sufficient abstentions, Sanchez will squeak home back to the Moncloa. What we don’t know is where that support is coming from. Podemos supremo Pablo Iglesias could contribute 42 seats if he were so inclined, but his inclination includes ministries and possibly a vice-presidency. We know that neither Sanchez nor the PSOE hierarchy believes that Iglesias is worth it and brings the risk that he will start doing his own thing and play to the gallery. We know Pablo Casado is turning deaf ears to requests to abstain from veteran PP politicos including Mariano Rajoy and Esperanza Aguirre. We know that Albert Rivera will also refuse to abstain despite veter-

Can he hold proxy votes? I ask you to clarify the Horizontal Law concerning proxy voting at the AGM. In our community, one person has collected proxy votes from about 25 per cent of the other owners. As a result, he is usually able to have the deciding vote on matters discussed at the AGM. He makes this ‘collection’ every year. The other owners feel they are living in a dictatorship. Can you clarify? S J (Costa Blanca) The Horizontal Law provides that an owner YOU AND THE who cannot attend the LAW IN SPAIN AGM may delegate his vote by proxy to another person. This person need not even be a member of the community. A simple written notification to the president is sufficient. It is perfectly legal for one person to hold and vote various proxies. Sometimes a person will even use the proxy votes that he holds in order to be elected president. None of this is illegal. If you are opposed, you could try to collect your own number of proxy votes. This is raw democracy. If you feel that your interests have been harmed, you can go to court to impugn the results of the vote.

Knowns and unknowns an and not-so-veteran Ciudadanos politicos who think he should. That leaves odds and sods including the Catalan pro-independence parties, some of whom are hinting at abstention and regional parties like the PNV. There’s also Bildu, once ETA’s political arm, and whom the Right still like to label as terrorists, although ETA disappeared years ago. But should they all support Sanchez, he will still need Iglesias.
It’s anybody’s guess what will happen in less than two weeks’ time but there’s one thing we do know. If Sanchez doesn’t pull it off, there will be another general election.
Lie back and think of Spain VOX continues to raise its voice and twist Albert Rivera’s arm. If he
wants Vox’s votes to enable the Partido Popular and Ciudadanos to govern in the Madrid Community and Murcia then he must sign up to a threesome that includes Vox. No excuses, no ‘I didn’t want to do it’ or ‘My drink was spiked.’ Instead, Vox wants Rivera’s name on a piece of paper. And Rivera? So far he has resisted but he could always sign, do his duty, then lie back and think of Spain.
End of the beginning IF Spain is subjected to another general election, it will presumably be as hamstrung by some political parties’ red lines and vetoes as the last one. Forget the population, winning an election is no longer a means to an end, but the end in itself instead of a beginning.
Waterloo sunset IT’S been said that Cataluña’s president Quim Torra has done nothing during his first year in office. No budget, no reversals of the cuts imposed years back by CiU, which begat his own party PDeCat, and no discernible government programme. Possibly 50 per cent of Cataluña’s population are attracted to independence, but even they want a government that looks out for them, not an Administration that devotes its time and energies to tending to the needs of Torra’s self-exiled predecessor Carles Puigdemont, his puppet-master in Waterloo. Doesn’t bode well for hypothetical independence or, probably, votes in the next regional election.

JORIS PLU DOES this seem familiar? Talking to yourself, saying, I wish it was quiet around me at this very moment. Silence. No sound at all. For a moment, por favor. You just want to hear nothing or maybe just the waves of the sea, some birds singing softly or the wind blowing. Or not even that. There is so much noise in our life these days and it feels like it is increasing all the time. And not only during the day, even at night, while we are supposed to sleep. When we need to have complete silence. The time that our mind should be able to rest, that our battery could reload. But no, there is always interference. So how can we stop this or what can we do about it? Besides running around with earplugs all the time. A few months ago, there was a woman who went searching for the

Silence… a real gift to you
SILENCE: It really is golden. most silent place on earth. It was on social media. She looked around not too far from her hometown. And she thought at first that it would be an easy task. That she would soon find that unique spot
where she could enjoy peace of mind. Silence. Of course, she found quiet places. But never quiet enough. There was always somewhere some kind of sound to hear. A car far away or a plane or ani-
mals. She started to think that a real silent place on earth did not exist any more. There are no completely silent spots on this planet any more was her reaction, her belief. And maybe she is right. So what about you now? Even with all the noise around you, where do you find peace of mind, which is the most silent place for you? Do you make enough time for yourself, your family, in quiet surroundings? If so that would be wonderful because our brain needs the time and place to reset, to calm down, to rest. If not and you feel you need it, then take some time now and think where you could find the most silent place for you. Which is, of course, different for all of us. Look at your calendar and make an appointment with yourself to go to that place or to go search for it. If you find it, enjoy it. Visit your

So now you have found your place and been visiting it for some time. Very soon afterwards you will see the difference in your own behaviour. You will be much calmer. You will be able to think clearer. Even find answers to questions you struggled with for some time. Silence will also give your body and mind a very healthy power up. Is this not worth it? Swimming advice A HOT Spanish day, what can be better than a nice cooling dip in the pool or sea. Great, but it is important to follow the rules and stay healthy and safe: • Swim in designated areas, supervised by lifeguards and obey the warning signs and flags, that indicate where and whether it is safe to swim, particularly when swimming in the sea. • Stay out of the water when you are very tired, very cold, or overheated. • Always swim with someone else nearby; never alone. • Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child. • Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear a life vest around water. • Maintain constant supervision of both children and adult swimmers. • Make sure everyone in your family learns to swim well. Courses are fun, inexpensive and could save a life. • If you have a pool, secure it with appropriate barriers. Many children who drown in home pools were out of sight for less than five minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time.
• Swim a safe distance away from diving boards and slides. Never swim under them. • If a child is missing, check the water first. Seconds count in cases of drowning. • Have appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a mobile phone, life jackets and a first aid kit to hand. • Know how and when to call the emergency services on 112, remember that they will have English-speaking operators available. Stay calm and clearly give the operator the address and describe what the emergency is. • Protect your skin. Limit the amount of direct sunlight you receive particularly in the heat of the day and always wear a waterproof sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 30, remember that although the water may feel cool, you can still get sunburn whilst swimming. • Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. • Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine in them and never swim when drunk or under the influence of drugs. Swimming is a great exercise, good for cooling you down and can be good, old fashioned fun. Just stick to the rules and enjoy it.

IMPORTANT: Regular check ups.
Men’s health SOMETIMES men’s health regimes can get overlooked. But staying well and healthy matters to everyone. Here we look at some top tips for men to get and remain healthy. • Ensure you get routine health check ups, screenings. Going to your doctor or nurse for a regular check up could save your life. By keeping up to date with these appointments, your health care provider can make sure you stay up-to-date with injections and preventive health screenings. The medical team should check your body mass index (BMI). Your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and will also check for any early indications of cancer and other diseases. Remember, your doctor may not always give you the answer you want to hear, but nobody died from a diagnosis. • Eating a diet that’s low in fat (less than 7 per cent of calories should come from saturated fats), cholesterol, and salt, and packed with fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and fibre can help improve your health, and help to prevent heart disease, diabetes and certain cancers. • Try to get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity on most days of the week. Taking a walk, jogging, cycling or swimming. Start slowly and gradually build up. Even if you are bust, re-
search shows that even short bursts of physical activity as few as 10 minutes of intense activity several times a day - can help men improve their health. • It’s important to maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight, especially around the waist, can be hard on your body. Carrying too much body fat forces your heart to work harder and increases your chances of heart disease and stroke. It also has been determined as one of the major causes of cancer and that extra weight can also affect your lower joints. • If you drink alcohol, lim-
it your consumption to no more than two drinks per day. • Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemicals and is a known cause of cancer. Smoking also increases the likelihood of high blood pressure, heart disease, lung problems and other health problems. Give it up. • Did you know men are four times more likely to commit suicide than women, which is thought to be due to under-diagnosed depression? If you feel anxiety, nervousness or any other symptom of depression, please do not ignore the symptoms, get help.

Drying fruit and vegetables WE often have a glut of certain fruits and veggies here at Olive Tree Farm, so working out ways to preserve them without waste, is important to us. I had tried the oven method for drying for a few years, which worked well and then I read about ‘Sun Drying’ them. I suppose living in Spain, it is pretty obvious really that people would use the sun, but I had never thought about it before. The first year I tried adding tomatoes to a large basket covered with fine netting. I put two baskets full of the tomatoes in the greenhouse! Perfect! I thought that by using baskets the air would circulate well! The next morning when I went to check them and lifted the net, I was surrounded by approximately two million fruit flies. They had got in via the gaps in the basket. To say it put me off using them is an understatement, they went in the bin! Then I read about using the car to dry things. I had to try it. It made sense as there would be no flies able to get to the fruit. To my amazement this worked. Some things will take a day or two longer to dry out depending on the moisture within whatever you are drying. I have also brought tomatoes and oranges in at night to keep them from getting too much moisture back on them as the heat cools. I then put them back in the car the next morning! So, how do you do it? Ingredients and tools required! One car (I use a Seat, but any model will work) Cooling racks (drying rack) Kitchen paper Thinly sliced oranges (perfect for potpourri) Thinly sliced tomatoes (no need to

windscreen facing the sun. Lay kitchen paper on your cooling rack and lay your chosen fruit or veg in a single layer, not touching each other on the paper. Put the cooling rack on the dashboard of the car, make sure there is a space of a couple of inches between the rack and the dashboard to allow air to circulate. Then walk away and leave them. Mushrooms dry very quickly, usually over the course of one day. Others may take a couple of days as mentioned above and I usually turn them once a day. To store, you can either pack in plastic bags or an airtight container, and keep in a cool dark cupboard, or as I do, store in the fridge. You can also freeze them easily. They last between six-12 months if stored properly. To rehydrate, pour over boiling water or stock to just cover them and leave for around half an hour until they have absorbed most of the liquid. Drying them certainly intensifies flavours and they are great for soups and stews.
ADRA has a packed programme of events and activities this summer. There are exhibitions, theatre, dance, festivals, arts and crafts markets, workshops, sports tournaments and live music throughout July and August. Musical highlights include the Juergas Rock Festival from July 31 to August 3 and concerts by veteran Spanish rock band Los Puntos on August 9 and the finalists
of Spain’s version of The Voice Senior on August 31. Adra mayor Manuel Cortes said the programme was designed to appeal to all ages, and to residents and tourists, with a particular focus on activities on the coast. Walking football marches on ALMANZORA VALLEY Walking Football Club started out four years ago with a handful of over-50s getting together once a week for a kick around. Today it is an established football team with 52 registered members playing twice a week, and hosting and attending competitions in the area. Although the players are predominantly over 50, the club welcomes everyone, including ladies, to its Tuesday and Wednesday sessions. The club’s latest competition was in June for
the Andy Taylor trophy. Andy, one of the club founder members, sadly passed away last year. The club was delighted Andy’s brother and sister-in-law were the special guests from England. They were presented with a commemorative medal on the day, which rounded off with a BBQ for members and their partners. Anyone interested in walking football can turn up La Alfoquia football ground at 9.45am on a Tuesday or 3.45pm on a Wednesday. Alternatively contact Keith (Club Secretary) on 634 326 350.

Maz’s on the move MAZ’S Canine Rescue charity shop in Albox has moved. Prompted by the success of the shop in Avenida America and the need to accept larger items as donations, the charity has transferred to bigger premises in Calle Asturias. The new shop opened its doors on July 1 thanks to the help of Paul Maynock with the electrics and plumbing and Alan Stoten and Dave Wright with the decorating and fitting. All three gave their time for free. Doing the official inauguration honours was local radio DJ Jack Savage. “We are now able to stock a much larger range of goods and display them more effectively,” the charity’s ViceChairman and Treasurer Steve Conroy told the Euro Weekly News. “The shop provides vital funds to help run our kennels, where we have nearly 50 dogs, all awaiting adoption, fostering or sponsorship,” Steve explained. “The shop is staffed by a team of volunteers, who all give their time to help, and all the money raised goes directly to looking after and caring for the dogs.” For more information about donations, sponsorship, or fostering go the Maz’s Canine Rescue website (www.mazscaninerescue.org) or Facebook page.

Toyota and Subaru tie up
MODEL: A jointly developed BEV-dedicated platform. TOYOTA and Subaru (Subaru) have recently disclosed that they have agreed to jointly develop a platform dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEVs) for midsize and large passenger vehicles and to jointly develop a C-segment-class BEV SUV model for sale under each company’s own brand. By combining their respective strengths, such as the all-wheel-drive technologies that Subaru has cultivated over many years and the vehicle electrification technologies that Toyota is employing to bring together the companies
to share their aspirations, the two companies intend to take up the challenge of creating attractive products with an economic and ecologically sound appeal that only BEVs can offer. Following this agreement with Toyota, Subaru will now shift its existing BEV development resources to this new joint project. Within this new framework, Subaru will continue its efforts to create an attractive BEV SUV for customers, while improving efficiencies in terms of engineering, development, purchasing, and other areas through the new joint project.

The day had started not too well for fans and riders alike, wi t h t h e g l o o my weather meaning Warm Up had limited running time. But Marc Marquez made the most of it for Repsol Honda, setting the fastest time. From here there was no looking back as the reigning World Champion steadily built his lead to cross the line 4.5 seconds clear of second place for the 75th victory of his Grand Prix career and his 49th win in the premier class. The victory is Marquez’s seventh visit to the top step o f th e p o d iu m in th e p re mier class at the German
track, equalling Valentino Rossi’s record of straight wins at Mugello. Britain’s Cal Crutchlow showed a welcome seam of form when he made it two
Honda RC213V machines on the podium with a wellearned third place. Maverik Viñales took second spot on his Yamaha. Marquez now heads in-
to the summer break with 185 World Championship points, 58 ahead of second placed Dovizioso. The win also increases Honda’s lead in the Constructor Championshi p t o 34 poi nt s over Ducati. Speaking after the race, Marquez said: “It was a perfect strategy. But I didn’t have a perfect start as I ran a little deep at Turn One. After that my plan was two slow laps to warm the front tyre well and then push, and it’s exactly what
I did. Step by step I opened t he gap and f ol l owed t he plan as I needed to. Once the gap was at three seconds I stayed there and saved the tyre and enjoyed riding. “ I t ’s a g r e a t f e e l i n g t o win here again and to enter the summer break in this way. SPAIN’S Jon Rahm is back in the World’s top 10 and leading the European Tour’s Race to Dubai after winning the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open. The 24-year-old secured a record third Rolex Series title at Lahinch Golf Club, County Clare after coming into the weekend seven shots off the pace. Two sensational rounds of 64 and 62 to reach a tournament total of 16 under par were enough for a two-stroke triumph over Bernd Wiesberger and Andy Sullivan. “I keep saying I love this tournament, country, the people and I feel like I’m at home every time I play in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open,” said Rahm, who seals his spot in the
DP World Tour Championship after jumping from 15th to the top of the Race to Dubai Rankings on 2,225.1 points for the season. “My game was in great form, I just struggled to hole the putts the first two days, but the weekend was the complete opposite. I had putts that were rolling in from everywhere! I knew I had to do something special today and my target number was to get to 15 under, so to get to 16 under is even better. “Me and my caddy Adam Hayes did a lot of hard work over the weekend to polish out the mistakes of the first two days and I’m very excited to add my name to this special trophy for the second time.”
Wiesberger’s share of second spot saw him make significant strides on the Rankings with the Austrian jumping from 21st to seventh on the Rankings with 1,571.3 points. Sullivan also made an impressive climb up the Rankings with his best result of the season as the Englishman made his way up to 22nd from 88th on 954.9 points. Meanwhile, Eddie Pepperell, Robert Rock and Dubai based Rafa Cabrera Bello finished a shot further back to finish tied fourth in the second Rolex Series event of the season. Pepperell moves up to 35th from 60th, Cabrera Bello climbs to 27th from 45th, while Rock

edges closer to the Race to Dubai top 50 after surging from 147th to 70th. Paul Waring and Jorge Campillo shared seventh spot to both get their hands on 192.5 Race to Dubai points. Waring climbs up 11 spots from 39th to 28th on 852.9 points, while
Campillo moves from sixth to fifth on 1,647.1. Zander Lombard, Martin Kaymer, Gavin Green, Mike Lorenzo-Vera and Edoardo Molinari all picked up 131.5 points as they completed the top 10. The top 50 players in the
Race to Dubai Rankings will contest the season-ending US$8million DP World Tour Championship at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai from November 21-24 where US$3 million will be up for grabs for the winner, making it the richest prize in world tournament golf.
