ONE of the most positive things to come out of the Coronavirus lockdown has been an act that has allowed us to repurpose the word ‘balconing.’ What was once used as a description of drunken holidaymakers dangerously plunging from their high balconies into a swimming pool is now a nightly occurrence throughout communities in Spain to thank the health care workers.

At 8pm every night balconies are full of people of all ages, who are currently living in fear of an unknown enemy, pushing their worries aside to come together in a beautiful act of solidarity.

lows them to not only express their gratitude, but also to connect on a social level.

This social connection may be enough to get some people through the day.

Brave police officers, who currently have the hard job of enforcing these isolation laws have also joined in with their own way of thanking the public by driving through the neighbourhoods flashing their lights.

As the clapping subsided during one evening’s celebration one woman could be heard exclaiming “Hasta Mañana Todos!”

During this time of uncertainty and fear, we all need something to look forward to and the pandemic has brought us together with community spirit and respect for our fellow man.

Buses limited FUENGIROLA Town Hall has decided to reduce the frequency of local buses after passenger numbers declined by more than 92 per cent of regular travellers and on the recommendation of the Ministry of Transport to limit exposure to Covid-19.

Councillor of Transport for Fuengirola, Isabel González, has commented, “since the State of Alarm was decreed on March 14 as a measure to contain the spread of Covid-19, we have detected a drop in the number of users that have exceeded 92.5 per cent; Given this situation and, in addition, to comply with the recommendations on passenger transport given by the authorities, we will reduce the frequency of our urban transport.”

The new schedules are already being distributed in bus shelters and through the local media.

Bored pensioner MARBELLA police officers recently spotted an elderly woman walking the streets during lockdown.

When they stopped to ask if she needed help, the woman snapped she was out running errands. As they tried to explain to her she shouldn’t be out she turned around and ex-

The document on Facebook will be updated to reflect the latest information.

Accommodation: The Spanish government has ordered that hotels and short-stay accommodation (such as short-stay campsites or caravan parks) must close by midnight today March 26.

These measures do not apply to long-term accommodation, such as long-stay campsites, as long as clients can cater for themselves, in their own spaces (ie that clients do not rely on communal facilities).

If you’re currently on holiday in Spain, check with your tour operator or accommodation provider for further information. If you’re travelling and wish to return to the UK, contact your tour operator, checking the website of their airlines or ferry companies for further advice. The Spanish authorities may ask British travellers to move hotels before today March 26 and have underlined that no-one will be left without accommodation.

The Spanish authorities have published a list of hotels and short-stay accommodation that will remain open during the State of Alarm. Travel to airports to leave Spain is still permitted, but travellers may be asked to provide evidence that they are departing Spain (ie plane ticket).

Driving through France: Spain is not restricting land border crossings from Spain to France. To drive back through France, the French authorities require that you fill in a declaration to explain your reason for travel, you should also have evidence of your onward travel plan (ie ferry/rail ticket).

UTILITY BILLS: Cutting off vital necessities is strictly prohibited.

THE regulations stated below applies to individuals on a personal level. It is not to be taken into consideration if you are a business, as the same information may not apply to you.

Energy, water and gas are considered basic necessities so the guidelines on these services have been made clearer than in other fiscal areas.

The Spanish government has stated that cutting off access to these vital necessities is strictly prohibited. If you have been left without a job or are earning significantly less during this crisis you are not obliged to pay your bills. However, this does not excuse you from payment rather it postpones your payment to a later, more convenient date. Similarly, any mortgage payments do not have to be paid immediately if you find yourself in a vulnerable financial situation, but they will have to be repaid at a later date.

Rent payments have not been specified upon and this remains a dangerous grey

area. Overall, the government has encouraged residents to establish a ‘chain of solidarity’ between landlords and tenants. In other words, they expect an agreement to be reached between landlords and tenants without interference from the state.

Unions disagree with this method as they say issues like rent should not be left to blind faith. The government has recommended that those who have not reached a conclusion with their landlord and cannot pay their rent should go to social services to ask for financial help, as each autonomous community has been granted €300 million to help with social issues. Bins and IBI (Property tax) payments are hard to generalise as they fall under municipal jurisdiction, however they are likely to follow the repayment protocol of utility bills and mortgage payments. For example, Alicante has decided to delay the bin and IBI payments, whilst, Sevilla has reduced bin taxes for businesses who have been forced to close and postponed IBI payments. Coming out the other side AS the coronavirus crisis gets worse in Spain and around the globe by the hour it is hard to see life beyond what has taken on the characteristics of an increasingly horrific and terrifying never-ending nightmare.

This is not by any means the first time the world has been plunged into dark depths by tragedy and war. This time the enemy is invisible, and a deadly foe which is showing no respect for national borders.

But at extraordinarily difficult chapters in world history like this we do well to remember that dark times do not last forever, and take inspiration from the words of great leader Winston Churchill.

Just a short time ago all eyes were on China as the Covid-19 health emergency first started to unfold, but take heart from reports showing the country is beginning to return to normal thanks to all its efforts.

1,500kg Food Donation AFTER the State of Alarm enforced by the government, Fuerte Group Hotels has proceeded to stagnantly close its establishments along the coast. All perishable food items have been donated as a charitable gesture to Caritas, a Catholic relief charity.

A press release from the group has stated that both of their Marbella hotels, Fuerte Marbella and Amare Beach Hotel Marbella, wanted to collaborate and add to the solidary actions we have been witness-

In total, this amounts

to more than 1,500 kilos of food and includes items like vegetables, fruits, dairy, meats.

They will be delivered, through a foundation called Fundacion Fuerte, to the Caritas delegation in the Parroquia del Calvario de Marbella. This entity will

be in charge of distributing the produce to those families and individuals most in need, especially to the elderly who have been identified as the most vulnerable group in this crisis.

The Andalucian hotel company, which has 63 years of experience, has said that in the history of their existence they have never had to close their businesses on this scale, they trust that “the measures imposed by the authorities and the responsibility of citizens alike will be able to contain this pandemic as quickly as possible, so that we can come out of this experience supported and united.”

Coping with coronavirus

By John Smith THERE is a great deal of information about how to avoid infection by Covid-19, but there seems to be less about how to cope with it and the following is based on information supplied by a nurse.

Purchase tissues (not toilet tissues), paracetamol (avoid anti-inflammatory such as ibuprofen), mucus thinning cough medicine (not containing paracetamol), a vapour rub, honey and lemon.

For anyone with a history of asthma make sure that you have a spare inhaler of the type normally used.

Prepare some food, especially hearty soup and place in the freezer and also make sure that you have plenty of clear fluids as you need to keep hydrated.

Make sure that you take plenty of rest and even if you start feeling better you may still be infectious for a further 14 days, so don’t go shopping but ask friends to do it for you and leave outside your door.

If you are not having problems with breathing and your temperature is below 39°C you do not need to go to the hospital as 90 per cent of healthy adult cases have been managed at home with basic rest/hydration/over-thecounter medicines.

If you have a pre-existing lung condition (COPD, emphysema, lung cancer) or are on immunosuppressants speak to your doctor about what to do if you get sick.

Banderas’ concerns Temporary shelter ALONE, in his penthouse in Malaga, Antonio Banderas is yet another Costa del Sol resident stuck in self-isolation. The Hollywood actor and director has confessed his immediate and long-term concerns about the global pandemic.

As head of the recently opened Teatro del Soho CaixaBank, Banderas lives in hope for the development of events for his new venture “I think I will be able to endure the onslaught that is coming upon me, but there is already talk of another extension of the State of Alarm and that will mean that we are not going to be able to open the theatre immediately.”

The Oscar nominee was especially concerned with healthcare personnel expressed his admiration: “I am thrilled to see the work of professionals, especially healthcare professionals, I do not understand that lack of equipment and that lack of foresight, and I do not want to enter politics, but it is very unfair that they are working in these conditions.”

Caring couple MARRIED couple Lola and Pedro, who live in Malaga, selflessly welcomed three homeless children suspected of coronavirus to their home on Saturday, as the woman who cared for them had been admitted to hospital in critical condition and with a high fever.

A 13-year-old girl, of Chinese origin, had called a friend’s mother explaining the person who was caring for them had collapsed and was not responding.

She was alone with her two brothers, aged two and three years old.

Officers who went to help them discovered the woman unconscious on the floor. She was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Carlos Haya Hospital. The children, despite having been in direct and permanent contact with her, were not tested as they were asymptomatic.

Officers contacted the Servicio de Protección de Menores to discuss urgent care, that is provided by 30 families that make up the Hogar Abierto, with regard to the children. As there was a possibility they may get sick and to try not to split the siblings up the task was much more complicated than usual.

Hogar Abierto contacted Lola and explained the situation. Lola and Pedro arrived at the association’s headquarters on Saturday night where the three children were waiting. It was not the usual reception. There were no hugs, no kisses. Just a safe distance and the knowledge the children would be safe.

IN response to the State of Alarm, Mijas Council moved immediately to provide accommodation in one of its buildings for homeless people in the town. With warm, secure accommodation managed by the Red Cross, some 10 people are taking advantage of this temporary shelter which also supplies food and medical attention.

Taser Arrest

HOLLYWOOD STAR: Making good use of his time in isolation.

A 28-YEAR-OLD Spanish man has been arrested in Malaga centre for the possession of an illicit weapon. The alleged culprit was said to have stood at the entrance of a busy establishment with a taser in the shape of a gun, setting it off and making customers and people passing by scared.

Nearby police forces fled to the scene after a woman alerted them that a man was stood at the entrance of an establishment and intimidating people. They looked for the perpetrator who fit the characteristics they received and found him already inside the establishment.

After investigation, the officers verified that the man had publicly used and displayed an illicit weapon which they then confiscated. He was then arrested for the possession of an illegal weapon.

Check-up calls MIJAS Town Hall is committed to promoting initiatives to improve the quality of life and attend to the needs of the elderly for the duration of the State of Alarm, for which reason it has initiated the ‘check-up’ calls that more than 1,500 elderly residents of the municipality will receive, as reported by the councillor for the Elderly, Tamara Vera, on Tuesday.

“The project is aimed at those who due to their age, usually live alone, as well as contacting around 400 dependents we have in the town,” explained the councillor.

Non-contact work A TOTAL of 280 employees of the Marbella Town Council have taken up teleworking in municipal management areas in order to guarantee the provision of public services.

Councillor for Innovation and New Technologies, Cristóbal Garre pointed out that authorised personnel have already been working for two weeks ‘remotely’ with VPN access, complying with the national security scheme.

In addition, ‘80 computer systems’ had been purchased to facilitate this way of working to people who cannot carry out remote training or access from their homes.

Garre pointed out that the town hall “has been implementing digital administration systems” for two years, which has made it easier to implement the telework “in all management areas.”

ONLINE TEACHING THE lessons have not been suspended, only the way in which the classes are given, due to the health alarm and the obligation to stay home.

Attendance at the classroom has been abolished, but the teaching activity is maintained daily in the homes of the students. Teachers have developed schedules and ways that they have adapted to isolation to ensure the teaching and learning process continues during this time.

However, some families will struggle as they do not have possibilities of accessing these telematic platforms putting vulnerable families that may not be able to afford home computers or internet connection at risk of exclusion.

Pilar Triguero, spokesperson for the Federation of Parents Association in the province (FDAPA), explains that it is “very difficult” for many families, and that this situation is causing inequalities. “No one was prepared for such a situation, but neither has it been shown in education,” he says. He also notes that “many children do not have a laptop or an internet connection and make a great effort working with a mobile.”

Phone Fraud A 19-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested in Malaga for allegedly defrauding 23 people with the sale of mobile phones amounting to a total gain of €12,700.

On Wednesday March 18, the National Police reported that the fraudster, a Spanish national, was working as an intermediary, selling fraudulently obtained phones as part of a larger criminal network. He received his cut

from each sale and approximately made €12,700 doing this. Officers recovered seven telephones and located another 12.

This type of scam is occasionally referred to as the Nigerian scam, in which the members of the group obtain fake national documents to make phone purchases with.

The phones are then received by a person called a mule who is in charge of

Support for women THE mayor of Mijas, Josele González, and the councillor for Equality and Diversity, Natalia Martínez, has announced the strengthening of the provision of services to women victims of gender violence during the declaration of the State of Alarm.

British children in Spain are either totally immersed in the Spanish language and way of life or suffer difficulty when attending schools where either English is the first language or Spanish is the ‘lingua franca’ language and they struggle with understanding the lessons.

This therefore is a good opportunity for all of the family to broaden their knowledge and improve their Spanish skills.

The approval of an ‘ordinary decision’ can be passed by a simple majority of owners, owning a majority of the properties according to the coef-

ficients (percentage of ownership).

Serious issues, such as the modification of the community statues needs the unanimous 100 per cent approval from all the owners.

In between we have an approval by special majority, this is a majority comprising of three-fifths of the owners, owning three-fifths of the property by coefficient and is required for important decisions like cancelling or instigating a new service for the

community and similar issues, thereby demonstrating a clear majority is in favour, as opposed to just a simple majority.

A general meeting of owners, also called the general assembly is the overall authority and generally speaking the ultimate decision maker for a community.

Under normal circumstances all community decisions should be approved at either an Annual General Meeting of owners

(AGM) or an Extraordinary General Meeting of owners (EGM).

However there are some exceptions, for example emergency repairs concerning accessibility or safety etc or when ordered to do so by a public administration ie the national or regional government.

The law is set up so that when needed, the public administration can decide what communities need to do and when. The community administration, without the approval of a general meeting of owners, will have to implement the public administration’s decision and the owners within the community abide by it.

So is the case with the Covid-19 crisis.

The College of Administrators for communities has issued the following guidelines and instructions to community administrators.

Community lifts should only be used by one person at a time. Community facilities like communal garden areas, swimming pools, sporting areas, social clubs and communal rooms

should be closed and made inaccessible to owners, tenants, neighbours and visitors.

The community; concierge, cleaners, gardeners and other community workers should be able to continue with their duties and go about their work, but with the understanding of reducing their timetable and eliminating the need to work in groups.

Thereby reducing the risk of contact and infection with each other and the residents.

An overall heightening of general hygiene should be correctly instigated with particular attention to frequently touching surfaces such as, door handles, lift and bell buttons, handrails and rubbish bin lids, and letter boxes etc.

In addition although it may create some problems, all general meetings, including those already scheduled must be cancelled or postponed until further notice.

Obviously other instructions may be necessary as the Covid-19 situation evolves. In the meantime take care.

Cyber Crime

ONLINE VIRUS: Trying to break the entire medical software system.

DUE to the State of Alarm, crime has drastically decreased but unfortunately it has not disappeared, as crime is now online.

Police forces have informed of a new online virus which is reaching medical staff via e-mail, trying to corrupt and ‘break the entire medical software system.’ The deputy operational director of the police, Jose Angel Gonzalez, explained that there has been a significant increase in “dangerous and malicious” cyber-attacks.

Medical staff are not the only victims of these cyber crimes. Over 200 online hoaxes “which aim to provoke fear and panic within the population” have been made during this pandemic. For example, videos of an Italian prison riot have been misleadingly shared throughout Spain.

On March 22 there were 7,007 reports and 61 arrests related to cyber crime.

Since the State of Alarm, there have been a total of 30,254 reports against cyber crimes and 364 arrests within the National Police’s jurisdiction.

Pollution Declines Carbon monoxide levels and particles in the Junta’s emissions meter have dropped up to 40 per cent.

AS the saying goes, every cloud has a silver lining, and that is what is happening with the coronavirus crisis and the environment.

Traffic has fallen drastically due to the restrictions of movement, and so has carbon monoxide emissions and particles, which are measured daily in a climate control station in Malaga. The use of private vehicles is the largest contaminator.

The Area of Mobility from the Malaga Town Hall registered, on Monday, a 70 per

cent drop in the main access roads, such as the Avenida de Andalucía and Calle Pacifica; and around a 60 per cent drop in its surrounding areas.

A technical specialist in environmental consulting said that this is due to “two interesting factors: on the one side, a reduction in traffic, and on the other strong winds, which blow away contamination in the city. For now, we have one of highest qualities of air that we could ask for.”

FOREIGNERS DEPARTMENT: Mijas residents can receive information via a hotline.

THE councillor for Expatriates, Arancha Lopez, has announced that the Department of Foreigners has launched a telephone hotline to help the population of residents who cannot speak Spanish.

“In our municipality we have a large percentage of residents who are foreign, and do not speak our language, who must be greatly worried about the uncertainties of recent circumstances. With this measure we aim to help them and communicate all the information that we currently obtain,” explains Councillor Lopez.

From 10.00am to

6.00pm, from Monday to Friday, Mijas residents will be able to receive all general information about the Covid-19 crisis by contacting the hotline 660 300 086.

This service is available to residents in various languages, namely: English, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, and German.

“Foreigners will be able to ask about the central government, the restrictions of the State of Alarm, the methods of preventing coronavirus, the telephone numbers they must contact if they present symptoms and so on, in general we will inform them about the crisis in relation to our country,”

Lopez adds.

The councillor has stated that they also offer translation services regarding coronavirus material, not just for residents but also for professionals, such as Red Cross members, if they need to communicate with non-Spanish speaking residents.

Apart from their hotline number, the department will continue to answer general queries from their main number 952 589 010 during their usual hours, 9.00am till 2.00pm, as well as via their email frd@mi jas.es.

They will also be posting relevant information via their social media page.

3D facemasks SEVEN Mijas residents have worked together to produce a number of protective face masks using 3D printing machines.

They then arranged for the local fire brigade to deliver the masks to staff at the Las Lagunas Health Centre.

The medical workers there were delighted with the thoughtful gift which will allow them to continue to help those suffering from a range of illnesses including of course coronavirus.

FOR some weeks now, the world has benefited by the schism be­ tween OPEC and Russia over oil production and motorists have benefited here in Spain as well as throughout Europe with a drop in fuel prices.

The OPEC concept was to reduce production in order to keep prices high as demands fall due to lock­ downs but Russia refused.

Things have changed however as President Trump has intervened to initially purchase 30 million bar­ rels of crude oil to add to American reserves, thus steadying the price.

Inditex donate supplies AS many companies with huge turnovers look to their governments to support them financially during the crisis caused by the coronavirus, Spanish giant Inditex, the world’s largest retailer, confirms that profits will be down this year.

Not daunted however, they have decided that with more than 3,700 stores temporarily closed around the world (although encouragingly only 11 of those are now in China), it will start to help the fight against the virus by turning over much of its ca­ pacity to making accessories for the health section.

Bankers’ €447m scam TWO British bankers have been found guilty of tax evasion in what is believed to be Germany’s biggest postwar fraud trial with the guilty parties defrauding the government of €447 million.

They have received suspended sen­ tences from the court in Bonn but one of them has also been fined €14 million for his part in the crime.

BONN DISTRICT COURT: Two British bankers were found guilty.

Stockbrokers write notes WITH many banks and investment firms closing their dealing rooms and asking staff to work from home because of coronavirus, they now face a possible breach of European Union trading laws.

The EU market watchdog has confirmed that whilst all traders are supposed to record conversations with customers, for the duration of the current crisis, they must take detailed notes of their con-

versations.

This is in response to complaints from banks that they have not received sufficient advice on what they should tell their staff to do in order to comply with the law.

The trial had been underway for several months but was brought to an abrupt end with the convictions due to the current coronavirus out­ break.

One of the two men who used Gibraltar­based investment vehicle Ballance Capital, told the court “I have made mistakes, I have learned my lesson,” but a fine of €14 million doesn’t actually replace the €447 mil­ lion which was collected by the pair over their seven­year crime spree.

It is believed that the technical le­ galities surrounding the trial made it the most complicated tax fraud case in history, but the convictions may be used as a precedent in future trials.

Despite the government’s plans to cover the earnings and business affairs of the legitimate citizens, quite rightly no provisions have been made to offset any problems of the illegal brigade. Unfortunately this is going to mean droves of disgruntled, hungry and possibly dangerous individuals prowling the streets prepared to do just about anything to ease their desperate situations.

Of course if Corbyn’s lot were in power, they would probably have special stations set up to take care of them all. In fact, if Diana Abbott had anything to do with it, it’s highly likely they would be given some kind of priority! When our lives return to normal, let us hope there is a bit

of ‘new brooming’ and some of these, often utterly ludicrous practices, are sorted out once and for all. Particularly the benefit baloney the country has become entangled and gnarled up in over the years.

In fact this latest example is not only a disgrace, but an insult to the families and victims of one of the worst acts of terror the country has ever seen. Last week, after the brother of the Manchester bomber was impris-

oned for his part in the attack, it was revealed that his family had been receiving benefits of more than £2,000 a month.

What was actually more disturbing was that when his mother took her three youngest children back to Libya in 2016, no one from Social Services thought to check their circumstances and the payments continued unabated.

This was subsequently used by these two monsters to not

only live on, but also purchase the components for the bomb which ultimately took the lives and maimed the scores of innocent victims in the Manchester arena atrocity. In other words the British tax payer funded the attack! Obviously when all this horror is at an end and the UK has the opportunity for a fresh start, the whole system will need a complete overhaul.

In our ‘new world,’ that will inevitably have undergone dra-

matic change, we will hopefully see more attention paid to the indigenous and better deserving population and use a little more common sense over the bleeding heart and luvvie brigade, who have managed to disrupt common sense and plunge the UK into a mind boggling turmoil of political correctness and utterly ludicrous ‘uman rights which needs to be sorted.

Finally this week I fervently hope, that when our human race ultimately manages to defeat this invisible nightmare, it will realise just how frail our existence actually is and learn that love and peace is still the only true answer to it all. Hang in there everyone.

Views of a Grumpy Old Man

LAMBE-MURPHY AS I sit at my desk to write this column, I realise that I am fortunate.

Yes, like everyone else, I too am in lockdown, but as I sip my espresso, and look to the sea, I know I am one of the lucky ones. I’m healthy and my family, who are in Ireland and the south of France, are thus far, okay. I am lucky in others ways too, as I’ve never held, what they like to call a ‘proper job.’

Therefore, I’m used to the freedom of doing as I wish, when I wish. While I saw others panic and stress when told to self-isolate, the idea of staying home, was at first, very normal to me.

However, it was after day one that I realised, I longed to lunch at Sea Grill, or get lost in Museo Ralli. I longed to be free to pass the late afternoon at the stores of Puerto Banus, or hop on a plane for risotto al nero at Cipriani, Monte Carlo.

But alas, lockdown is lockdown.

As the days began to pass, I started to snoop on social media to see how others were coping. Home work outs, cookery, fashion advice, beauty tips for ‘lockdown meltdown.’ All fine, but nothing new. Then of course there were those, who chose to moan and complain about everything and everyone.

I scrolled and scrolled, only to see people moaning at the government, the world, the sky, the sea and the dog.

Nothing was off limits. Without intention, I began to unfriend and delete people at an alarming rate. Why do I need these negative sorts in my new virtual world? I guess I’d never noticed them before, as I, like most, pay little attention to social media, as such.

Delete, delete, delete... I went into a frenzy, going from over 3,000 Facebook friends to less than 500 within half an hour. Try it, it’s surprisingly liberating.

So, with a major Facebook cull complete, a morning swim, lunch on the terrace, and a work out planned for that evening, how was I going to stay entertained for the rest of the day? A couple of years ago, I wrote a novel, Diary of an It Boy. A factional story based on the hectic life of an international socialite.

Filled with dramas and high-octane parties, from London to Gstaad. From Gstaad to Marbella, and beyond.

AS some of you noticed I didn’t do an article last week. I tried about 10 times but nothing I was grumpy about seemed really relevant at the time.

Since then we have been put on lockdown and the whole world has gone crazy. But this week, after being home for a few days, there are some things I think need addressing. These articles are written a week in advance so this might have all changed by the time this goes to print. I agree with everything being done here in Spain with a couple of exceptions. For instance there are three of us living here me, Mrs S and our dog WhatWhat. Yes,I know, but that was his name when we got him. He needs to be walked three times a day and sometimes one of us does the walk and sometimes we both do, but now only one of us can. Why? We know not to speak to people, but I’m allowed to go shopping or to the pharmacy where other people are. I’m dog walking round a deserted street! Maybe someone can ex-

plain. I also read that builders are working on sites. There’s other things, but let’s just do as we are told.

Here everything is closed so as painful as it is, the public are in no doubt about the rules. But in the UK places are allowed to open, but the public are being told not to go out to pubs etc. Madness. BJ has been on TV every night making government announcements. They are offering loans and grants to homeowners and business but only some with pandemic clauses in their insurance cover will be able to claim. But there will be some that, for whatever reason, don’t fit the criteria. Landlords need to have their rents paid by tenants but what if they can’t pay? There’s nothing in place for them. I read on Twitter trolls saying it serves landlords right like they are all some type of Rackman character (Google it).

But it’s just another business like having a shoe shop.

Some of the small businesses that are closing now will never open again. Rental properties here are getting no bookings now and bookings are being cancelled.

There are many people here that work and have a small amount of savings. We all have bills to pay. Let’s hope that everyone works together and we will get through it.

FORTUNATE: There’s a book in all of us, why not try it?

Anyhow, I remembered how good it felt to escape into the writing world, where nothing matters apart from the screen and your creativity. After an hour in the cellar selecting some wine, I poured a glass of Amarone, and set about writing a whole new book.

Should it be a follow-on from book one? Seeing as so much has happened since I wrote it, perhaps yes. It was at that moment, I experienced my first point of writers’ block. ‘Oh, a new book, exciting! What’s it going to be called?’ my friend Tancredi enthused, via Facetime.

I couldn’t even come up with a storyline, so the title was too much to try. I closed the laptop and went to workout. As I pounded the treadmill (God I miss my morning run on the beach), it came to me. That evening with Miles Davis playing, the fire lighting, and the distinct scent of Byredo Safran candles, that fill my house, ideas flowed and I got busy. Without trying, I found my mojo.

There’s a book in us all, try it. Who knows, perhaps from these dark days, will emerge some great modern classics. I’ll keep you posted. Stay safe, stay busy, stay creative.

It’s all under control

BY NICOLE KING THE past few weeks have certainly been different albeit as busy as usual. I have worked from home for years and I’m accustomed to spending a great deal of time here, always with plenty of things to do. Not being able to see my children or hold my granddaughter though is proving to be quite a challenge and certainly underlines the reality of the situation.

And there have been other challenges too.

Firstly it took me about three days to find the best way to record my TV interviews online to maintain continuity with Marbella Now. More than ever we need to keep in touch, particularly with so much fake news flying about you’re best served with reliable information.

I have also had to learn to trust my judgement when buying online; usually I worry I’ll buy the wrong thing. However af-

CHALLENGING TIMES: Different, but busy as usual. ter four days without a heater I consulted Google and was so relieved that the first company that popped up was El Corte Ingles’ fast delivery.

Firstly I knew that if I did order the wrong thing they’d take it back and secondly I would have heat apparently in just a couple of hours. I placed my order at 11.29am and wasn’t sure under the present circum-

stances it would arrive, but I had my heater delivered at 2.45pm. I was so impressed with the service and myself, as being cosy at home is certainly more enjoyable and it really was so easy to do!

I’ve been going out as little as possible, relying largely on home delivery. I strongly advise you do likewise particularly those who are more vul-

nerable.

LOCKDOWN: Why do British people think they will be ok?

PICTURE FRANKLY SPEAKING I’M really fearing for my home country, the UK. As I write this, it’s the day after Mothering Sunday. I’m seeing images from the UK of crowds out, going about life as if nothing has changed. I must admit, when news of the Corona Virus first hit the headlines, I laughed it off. I thought it was terrible for the people in China. But laughed at those who were panicking that it would make its way to us, in such a catastrophic way. I came out of denial about a month ago though!

To see so many British people still thinking they’ll be ok, though.

Quite Frankly, I can’t believe the stupidity! I’m getting the same sinking feeling felt when the Brexit vote passed. Thinking the same thing “my God, how can you all be so stupid?” It wasn’t

hard to see the bigger picture then. It’s not hard to see it now either.

I thought no good would come from isolating yourself from a union that is there to protect all its members.

You go back prior to the vote, even up until recently, you’d hear the same thing “we don’t need them. We pay in more than we get out.” I remember thinking about home insurance and comparing it to cancelling that because your street hasn’t had any break in recently.

Yes, Britain has done well over the years. It’s been one of the strongest European countries. I can see it all coming crashing down

now though. The failure of the government to act quickly and lock the country down. The sheer stupidity of the masses going about life as if everything is normal too.

Italy’s heath system is on the brink of collapse and so is Spain’s, despite swift lockdowns. It’s inevitable the UK will suffer much more. I think dark days are ahead. I fear the economy and the health system will both completely collapse.

Now they’ve cancelled their insurance policy too (EU membership), there’s no future financial aid available.

No help from their neighbours.

I hope by the time this goes to print, the UK government will have done the right thing and stopped freedom of movement.

Maybe some good will come of it? Maybe those who voted to restrict movement in the good times will realise how precious it was during the bad? Wouldn’t that be ironic?!

NOT BORED YET DEAR EWN, Thanks for keeping on top of the reporting for us. Now that my family’s panic has calmed down a bit and we have started to settle in after a week of isolation, I am glad we have somewhere to turn to.

We thought the children were going to drive us crazy because they are a tad hyperactive but have taken some advice I saw you had online and we have been doing daily relaxation and yoga. There were also a lot of online activities for them and the town hall has been showing videos of exercise, so at least we will come out of this more physically fit!

Anyway, just popped by to say thanks.

Heavy handed DEAR Euro Weekly, I wondered if any of your other readers have been having the same problem. I understand and agree with all this staying in the house isolation. However, my wife and I are in jobs where we still have to go to our workplace. We have our NIE and residency but also carry a paper signed and stamped by our work. We are getting stopped every day when we leave the house and the police are not happy with our paperwork.

I understand the reason they are there and the massive and scary task they have at hand but must they be so aggressive? Also, I really do feel that there is a sense of racism about it. I am obviously not a local which they will tell by looking at me. I was out walking my dog and a kind resident pulled up and told me that the police were on the next block and scanning all the dog’s electronic chips to make sure they are registered to you, overkill?

I will keep doing all that I can but is there no way of explaining this is scary enough without an armed aggressive man threatening you every day?

Wow... the whole world united. Why can’t it be like this forever.

Under control SPAIN is currently on lockdown in a State of Alarm and most residents are now in self-isolation. In certain areas of the country, the police are having major problems controlling the general public. Hefty fines are being dealt out and warnings are being given for normal acts like walking down the street or having passengers in your car.

The police may seem heavy-handed and threatening to some, even though the people of Spain are pretty compliant in comparison to other countries. Will the UK lockdown go so smoothly? The news in Britain up until now has been full of crime, out of control gangs and evidence that the police there cannot handle the public as it stands.

How will they deal with that kind of lawlessness when trying to enforce a lockdown?

We can only hope that the Army can put the point across and bring the country into their control. Who knows, maybe when we come out the other side of this there may be some kind of new appreciation and order. The population may then realise that a sense of control can work in everybody’s favour. Solidarity and putting on a united front in a time like this can help spread a feeling of positivity as we band together to get through this. Here’s hoping, stay safe.

HORMONE BALANCE

HORMONES affect skin health in a variety of ways. Your hormones don’t just control how you feel, they can impact the health of your skin, too. They play a key role in skin health.

We know this because certain hormonal disorders manifest themselves in the skin and hair, in addition to internally.

Hormone levels largely go unnoticed unless there’s something off. For instance, having low levels of thyroid hormones can contribute to weight gain, low mood and dry skin. Excess androgen, considered typical male hormones, which females also have, can stimulate sebaceous glands in the skin to pump out oil, contributing to the development of acne.

Another big hormonal player in skin health is estrogen.

Even before menopause, as we age, estrogen levels can start to decline. Estrogen helps to stimulate the right amount of oil production to keep it supple, smooth, and plump. But as estrogen decreases, the skin is drier and itchier.

With a quick Google

search, you’ll find many socalled health experts promising that a ‘hormone reset’ will improve your skin health. But most often these aren’t healthcare professionals, and their claims are largely unfounded.

What is true is that if you’re experiencing symptoms such as a specific skin problem, your doctor may consider a hormonal condition. For instance, if you have irregular periods, acne along your jawline, and excess hair on your lip and chin, your doctor may evaluate you for polycystic ovary syndrome. Excess levels of ‘male hormones’ called androgens, as well as high insulin may play a role in the cause of PCOS. In this case, treatment via weight reduction or pre-

scription medication, like birth control pills or spironolactone, may help regulate hormones.

Diet and lifestyle habits that can optimise your hormonal and skin health.

This is not about taking a specialised rotation of supplements or adhering to a detox or cleanse.

You can improve your skin health by getting plenty of sleep, having a balanced diet, exercising regularly, reducing alcohol consumption, and avoiding smoking. This is good, clean living.

Ultimately, hormones affect every function our body has, which includes skin diseases, and they’re important in keeping skin in balance.

What is wrong with Mummy?

MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED LIKE any other parent you live with the guilt and question yourself if the job you are doing is ‘good enough,’ with that and my own mental demons I would bring myself to breaking point.

Being a parent is difficult for anyone, but being a parent with bipolar does come with a unique set of worries and challenges.

I cannot count the number of times I have stopped and wondered how much damage my illness causes to my child. I remember many sleepless nights worrying about the day I would have to explain to my child what her Mummy had to go through on a daily basis.

I will never forget the words my mum said to me one day “We will explain to her in age appropriate terms.”

Growing up children naturally have a lot of questions - when they don’t get answers to their questions they tend to come up with their own, which can be incorrect and scary for them!

“Why does my mummy cry and shake sometimes?” She asked her Nana.

UH OH!! How do you explain to a five-year-old about panic attacks?!?!

I felt as if my whole world came crumbling down, I thought I was doing so well by putting a brave face on day in and day out for my child, hiding away the fact that I had to take medication several times during the day.

That I cried or felt suicidal at times. That I was tired, so tired of being ME! First thing I could think of saying was “Mummy has really bad headaches and sometimes gets really poorly.”

I asked a child psychologist on how to deal with this kind of situation, to which her professional advice was to talk to her in words she understood and to always speak the truth.

Each parent and child’s “beginning conversation” about bipolar and anxiety disorder will be different depending on the child’s age and ability to understand.

Nobody knows your child better than you do.

This seemed the ap-

propriate explanation for a five-yearold, and it was, I answered her question and on she went about her day without giving it another thought.

Now at the age of seven years old, she knows that her Mummy is different, that I have good days and bad days, she knows what a panic attack is, she also knows to call her grandparents straight away if she thinks Mummy is really poorly. She knows she can ask me anything, tell me what she is worried about and Mummy will always answer.

The hardest thing to live with is knowing that seeing me live with bipolar may have caused her to feel unsafe, caused her to feel upset, or blamed herself - breaks my heart.

Everyday I wake up setting my parenting expectations so high. On my good days I may meet them all, and on others I fall short. But the one thing that never falls short, is how much love I have for my child and some days that is ENOUGH. A few tips I have learned along the way, may help others reading this: • Don’t be scared to ask for help! : Let your loved ones know how they could help you. It’s brave to admit you would like some help.

• Don’t sweat the small stuff: If you can’t do the dishes today because you need an early night, don’t worry, they will still be there tomorrow!!

• Self care is important : You need to take care of yourself in order to be able to take care of your children.

• Your self worth exists outside of your family : It’s important to develop outside interests so you can feel worthy.

Take care of yourself. Take care of everyone. Take care of Andalucia.’

A video on social media starts with Baras, an international dancer who says “together we can put an end to the virus, but it will have to be by staying at home” and sends a message of “love, strength and courage” to the Andalucians.

Roberto Leal, a Spanish television presenter, finishes the video address with a message to the young people to remind them: “Don’t do it just thinking about yourselves, but thinking about all of us and what is to come, in the end, it is all about common sense and solidarity.”

Banderas stresses the importance of following the advice and ordinances of the authority saying: “Do not get infected and do not infect others, for this the best thing is to stay at home.”

It seems while staying home and finding ways to stay entertained and in shape stars like Banderas and X-men actor Alex Gonzalez, have taken it upon themselves to keep up with their rigorous fitness routines in two very different ways.

Antonio takes a more serious approach to his fitness and shares a video of his entire ‘A Chorus Line’ warmup routine.

Then there’s young Alex and his somewhat more casual approach to fitness.

In his video, we see him taking in the fitness area of his home with a tennis ball clipped to his cap as he tosses it from end to end.

EAT WITH ELLIS

A great chicken dish LIKE everyone else I’ve been trying to fill the time on lock down. Catching up on box sets, planning future projects for when we have the sweet taste of freedom again.

Deciding which restaurant I will visit on our first day out, standing on the balcony to show appreciation for everyone who is working so hard to deal with this dreadful situation. Being allowed to go to the food shop every few days is an opportunity to get something good to cook.

I got a fantastic chicken from our local butcher and set about trying to make something exciting from what I had in.

Last summer I bought a huge bag of red chillis from the market for a euro. I threaded them on a string and hung them in the sun for a couple of weeks. I still have some and I also have some paprika in the cupboard so I thought Piri Piri chicken would be appropriate.

Although I would have to make do with cooking the chicken in the oven

rather than over a charcoal grill.

Remove the wishbone from the chicken (this makes for much easier carving). Using sharp kitchen scissors cut down either side of the backbone and remove, now you can push down on the bird and there you have a spatchcocked chicken.

Marinate in salt, lemon, garlic and olive oil. Put seven chillis, garlic, paprika, lemon juice and olive oil in a blender. Roast chicken until golden and brush with the paste when ready to serve. Enjoy.

SO now we know what the Apocalypse feels like! On the upside we are getting more time at home and I have started to get to know my wife and she seems nice!

I have also spent a lot of time in my home kitchen. I am not sure whether I like all this home cooking though.

I buy a lot, I come back with loads of bags and then put it all away and pack it all into the fridge and freezers, but there is still nothing to eat!

Then there is the mess. “Where have all these pans come from?”

I hear Michele ask. “There are only two of us” she says.

But she doesn’t cook so she doesn’t understand that we have to have a pan for each thing and then a new pan for the odd other thing and finally a clean pan to pass the other things into and then the frying pan was no good cos it wasn’t non-stick, so that is why I used the other thing!

“So what about these things?” she asks. “Well they were there from yesterday’s meal, weren’t they?”

It’s a bit of a change for me. I usually just shout PANS!… and someone comes to collect them and then they make them all shiny and new and bring them back to me. I don’t think I should try shouting PANS!… to Michele.

“Don’t make a mess,” she constantly says, I would rather be at work for God’s sake!

So working I will be and that’s why I have just launched Home Chef (by the Little Geranium). It’s a simple concept. The weekly menu goes on our website, you

It’s not a money making project because I don’t think I could be making money at these prices, but it is a project designed to bring all of us isolated people great food, without all the dirty pans and without the chore of cleaning the kitchen. The upside for me is that I get someone cleaning my pans!

This week’s recipe is one of our own home favourites and actually doesn’t require that many pans!

Fresh fish is plentiful in the shops and on our coastline, but you may even have some fish in the freezer like prawns or a white fish which you can use for this recipe.

Serve it steaming hot with crusty bread or some fries. After all no one is watching their weight right now so go on get the fries out!

Steven’s Fish Pie Ingredients (serves four ) 16 mussels cooked 200g of salmon fillet cut into small pieces 4 large hand-dived scallops left whole or 8 small ones.

4 small white fish fillets like seabass cut in 2cm pieces pieces 12 large prawns peeled and de veined left whole 2 spring onions thinly sliced 1 handful of parsley or chives chopped Maldon salt A little pepper For the white sauce 75 g butter 50g of flour 500ml of milk 1 bay leaf 1 large onion, finely chopped 100ml of white wine 200ml of double or thick cream 50g of Gruyère cheese grated 50g of Parmesan cheese grated Juice of 1 lemon Maldon salt Fresh ground pepper

(I love to add lobster to this as it’s my favourite so feel free to add a ¼ of a whole lobster per person to this recipe)

FISH PIE: With a golden cheese topping.

For the mash & topping 500g of potatoes peeled and diced into 2.5cm cubes 150g of butter 100ml of milk, warmed 2 egg yolks 150g of grated cheddar cheese 100g grated Parmesan cheese Maldon salt Black pepper freshly ground

Method Put the cut potatoes into water until covered with a little salt in a large saucepan. Place the saucepan on to the heat and bring to the boil. Turn the heat down and then simmer the potatoes for 30 minutes While the potatoes simmer, make the sauce.

To make the white sauce Put 500 ml of milk and a bay leaf into a pan and bring to the boil, then remove from heat.

In another saucepan, melt 50g of the butter on a low heat then add the flour and cook for five minutes, stirring constantly.

Ladle the hot milk little by little in to the flour and butter mix, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to low and add salt and pepper to taste.

Simmer for five minutes at a low temperature. Remove the bay leaf.

Melt the remaining 25g butter in a large pan on a low heat and add the chopped onion.

Cook on a low heat for five minutes but do not colour.

Add the wine and continue to cook.

Now add the white sauce with the Parme-

san & Gruyère and the cream to the onion pan and simmer for two minutes, stirring constantly, then remove from the heat.

When the potatoes are cooked, drain them in a colander. Put the potatoes back in the saucepan and dry out on a low heat for one minute. Add the butter while you mash the potatoes, then add salt to taste and the warmed milk.

Remove from the heat, then mix in the egg yolks and put into a piping bag.

Make the pie Add all the raw chopped fish and prawns except the cooked mussels and the scallops to the white sauce whilst it is on a low simmer and cook for one minute. Now add the cooked mussels, the scallops and finally the chopped spring onions and the parsley or chives.

Immediately fill your pie dish (or a Pyrex dish) with your fish mix.

Pipe the potato over the fish to cover.

Now top with the grated Cheddar and Parmesan cheeses and bake in the oven for about 20 minutes until the cheese is golden brown.

Spanish repatriated THE Spanish Cabinet have decided to include an exception to the decree, established on March 10, that prohibited direct flights from Italy, as they aim to repatriate Spanish nationals and residents who find themselves stuck in Italy.

Maria Jesus Montero, the spokeswoman for the Cabinet has specified that whoever arrives to Spain on these flights must stay in complete quarantine at their homes. To make sure they stay quarantined they will be monitored by health authorities.

This decision has been made due to the ‘evolution of the pandemic,’ as the government needs to find a way to return the Spanish residents or nationals home. Italy is the only country from which flights have been strictly prohibited since March 11.
