NHS Charities Together, which will benefit from the funds, said it was “truly inspired and humbled.” More than a million donors have contributed to his JustGiving page since it was set up. Mr Moore began raising funds to thank the “magnificent” NHS staff who helped him with treatment for cancer and a broken hip. Prince William and the Duchess of Cor nwall have now both written
and donated an undisclosed figure to the JustGiving appeal. In a video filmed from his home, the future king said: “He’s a oneman fundraising machine and god knows what the final total will be, but good on him, I hope he keeps going.” It’s not just his walking that has caught people’s attention, Captain Moore’s NHS charity single, a rendition of the classic ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ with Michael Ball has hit number one in the UK Pop iTunes Charts. All proceeds will go to the walk fund, which has captivated Britain.

BIRTHDAYISHES W HAPPY Birthday to us! We have managed to reach 21 years old, now we can fly a helicopter, adopt a child and start to drink if we were in the USA. We weren’t going to let any virus stop our celebrations here at HQ and tucked into a feast of cakes and treats at our office party. Albeit at arm’s length and with our face masks on. Two of our longest serving team members Jose and Marcos blew the candles out on our fantastic birthday cake. Our fearless leaders Michel and Steven Euesden rejoiced in reaching this landmark with some positive words: “As we come into six weeks of lockdown the communities have
come together better than we could have ever imagined. The people’s paper is delivering your message every single week, in print and online. You say it, we communicate it,” exclaimed Michel. We hope you will raise a glass and celebrate with us because if it wasn’t for our readers we may never have made it this far. Here’s to many more years together. Cheers from all at EWN!

Age Care Association “LUNCH is on the table” is what Age Care is saying this week ! Thanks to the generosity of Sarina in San Pedro, and John Crawford (aka JC Paella Man) in Riviera, Age Care Calahonda is able to deliver two meals a week to their members - on Wednesdays and Sundays. Not only does this relieve the monotony of cooking for some, but also offers the carers that do cooking a welcome break. In addition to this service, Age Care is providing an online talk site for members to communicate with each other, news bulletins twice a week, regular shopping and checks with clinical and hospital appointments, and prescription pick-ups. With five different branches of Age Care, Los Boliches, Coin, Benalmadena and Calahonda, the Association looks after over 300 members. When the lock down is over the Fuengirola branch will reopen their drop in centre. The helpline emergency number 635 407 255 is open 24/7.
PLEA FOR HELP SEARCH: The rescue centre currently has nine horses and one pony in its care. RENOWNED for rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses that have previously been abused both emotionally and physically, the Coin-based Charity SEARCH - the Spanish Equine Association for Rescue currently has nine horses and one pony in its care, and was founded by Sue Barns and her husband Alan. It is facing an uncertain future due to the relentless fallout caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown as it concentrates all its efforts on rebuilding the trust and confidence of these traumatised equines with the aim of finding them loving, new forever homes, but with no government funding of any kind, SEARCH depends entirely on donations in order to survive. The Charity’s principal fundraising event - its annual Garden Party - which after having been cancelled due to torrential
rain and flash floods first in September 2019, and then again in November, was rescheduled to take place this month, on Sunday April 26… only to be cancelled for a third time due to this pandemic. Quiz nights and bag-packing fundraisers are now also postponed, while the student volunteers from northern Europe, who offer SEARCH much-needed live-in help and physical support, have had no choice but to cancel their visits. Meanwhile SEARCH’s much-loved equines still need fresh hay, plus the specialised care that only vets and farriers can provide. Please help us to continue with our commitment to help the horses. Donations can be made via PayPal (info@serch.es) or by bank transfer (please see www.serch.es for details). Or call Sue on 660 220 700. Thank you.

MANY stating that if they had been asked in what perspective they view the Euro Weekly it would have been THE PEOPLE'S PAPER as we always listen and give value to both the readers and the client’s needs and point of view even if sometimes we do not agree. Kids get out ON Tuesday evening Spain’s government made a sharp Uturn and relaxed lockdown restrictions even further for parents, improving on measures announced earlier that generated huge criticism from regional heads. Earlier on Tuesday the government announced that children under the age of 14 would be allowed to accompany parents on essential outings such as banks, supermarkets and pharmacies from Monday April 27. However, after a backlash from various regional presidents, the Health Minister Salvador Illa announced an amendment to the new rule, which now allows parents to take
short walks with children near their homes. “As a father, I feel a little bit disappointed,” tweeted Andalucia’s President Juanma Moreno. “It seems more reasonable that children can enjoy the fresh air and open spaces. I believe the government should rethink the measure as they have set it out,” he suggested. Andalucia’s Vice President Juan Marin also resorted to Twitter to make his thoughts known: “Pharmacies, supermarkets and banks are not places for minors. Parks and open spaces with protection measures would be more appropriate. I hope they rectify this.”
NOT TO PLAY: Children can accompany their parents.

Protective masks MANY of us have struggled during this crisis to get protective face masks. Yorkshire Linen has managed to source masks from a company who manufacture here in Spain; these masks comprise of five layers of protection and comply with regulations EN 14683 for the protection of healthcare workers from infectious disease. The masks are the same ones used by the hospitals here in Spain and are available to pre-order now on the website www.yorkshirelinen.es as these masks will arrive in a few days to the Mijas Costa warehouse to be then dispatched on using a courier. One euro from the sale of each of these masks will be donated to local charities such as the Food Fairies ( run by Marc and Penny Quinlan and Kara from The Boardwalk ) who have not only cooked meals to take out to those in need, but also they have collected and distributed food parcels too. Yorkshire Linen has already been able to hand over 84 to Lyndsay and Russell at the 8 Til Late shop in La Cala Hills, who are collaborating with the Food Fairies in collecting food and cooking hot meals to give out along the coast.

It immediately became obvious the escapee was having trouble staying afloat. Eventually he managed to cling to a rock, and then officers lost sight of him. A rescue operation involving Guardia Civil, mountain and sea rescue, a helicopter, Local Police and Civil Protection was launched, but after a day’s search there was still no trace of the man. The hunt for the missing man resumed the following day. But at midday he walked into the Playa de las Americas Guardia station. He told officers he had hidden in a cave until late at night and then gone home. The escapade led to his arrest on charges of serious disobedience of authority.

Marbella Madness THE Guardia Civil have fined a man in Marbella for taking his sheep out for a walk and breaking the quarantine rules set out by the State of Alarm as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. This outrageous sight took place in an urbanisation in Marbella when Guardia Civil officers encountered a person walking his sheep. The individual lacked any form of documentation, sanitary protective wear, and registration to prove that this sheep was his. He was also walking with a dog that did not possess any vaccinations or treatments needed by law. Officers began to identify the man and denounce him for administrative infractions against the health and protection of animals. These complaints have been forwarded to the Junta de Andalucia’s Territorial Delegation of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries.

FISHING VESSEL: Returning from a day’s fishing. LAST week, the Marbella fishing fleet of eight vessels of the purse seine type returned to the water after being laid up since March 1 due to the coronavirus pandemic and the State of Alarm. Now they are back, they have to face another problem which is the demand for their catches as so many hotels and restaurants, their main customers, have closed down during the State of Alarm.
It is estimated that in most cases, prices have dropped by 60 per cent compared to their February catches and this in itself has meant that the local Fishing Association has appealed for financial assistance and support from the authorities. It is generally agreed that fish constitutes part of a healthy diet and purchasing this locally caught product will help the fishermen to be able to afford to continue to serve Marbella.

Paper Hoarder by selling them online. Unable to do so, as supermarkets have been adequately stocked, the man has tried to return the 132 packages of toilet paper and the 150 one-litre bottles of disinfectant gel that he had previously purchased.
According to Drake, the customer even needed a team of warehouse workers to help him load everything he bought, which cost almost AUS$10,000. When asking for the refund, he admitted that his eBay account had been suspended
due to suspicions on his activity. The supermarket then refused to give him a refund and the director has taken the opportunity to make a video and send a public message regarding this issue. Amazon grows
RICHEST MAN: Is getting richer, even in the pandemic. AMAZON CEO Jeff Bezos’ fortune has grown by $24 billion amid the coronavirus pandemic, he owns an 11 per cent stake in the company, which has seen a massive surge in demand with households on virtual lockdown. The world’s richest man is getting richer, even in a pandemic, and perhaps because of it, the retailer’s share price climbed 5.3 per cent to a record high on Tuesday April 12, lifting the founder’s net worth to a staggering $138.5 billion. With consumers stuck at home, they’re relying on Jeff Bezos’s Amazon
more than ever. A surge in demand has driven the business to near peak holiday season levels, with households all over the world on virtual lockdown and many millions staying indoors. As the US’s coronavirus outbreak first spread, Bezos saved himself from larger losses by selling a large portion of his shares. He then benefited from the best three-day stock market rally since 1933. The late rally helped Amazon’s share price to recover almost all of its losses in March.
FINANCE Signs of recovery
ALTHOUGH things can change overnight, stock exchanges in Europe in particular appear to be heading back up for a number of reasons. Firstly, the Chinese economy has suffered more than anticipated from the Covid19 pandemic, secondly there may be a breakthrough in dis covery of a vaccine by Gilead in the USA which has seen their shares shoot up and thirdly, despite high unemployment, the US economy seems to be recovering slightly. Two companies to benefit imme diately on the Spanish stock ex change were Inditex and IAG.

WHILST there are in theory strict controls imposed on member states by the EU with regards to support of local businesses it has decided as a ‘measure of last resort’ this may be overlooked if all governments agree. The intention is that with the drop in value of shares, wealthy foreign governments may attempt to take over weaker companies and this is something that the European Union wants to block. It therefore wants to allow tem porary state control by injecting funds into vital companies.

Communities sometimes get around this by raising the fees and then offering a discount to all those who pay on time. The late payers must pay the full amount. This has the same effect and is legal as well. Cutting off access to the pool is another dubious area. The way to change anything in a community is to as semble enough votes and proxies to vote the change at the AGM. This exercise in basic democracy requires ef fort and determination. We are sorry for the mixup in the heading of April 9.

Spending down A NEW study by the University of Cambridge based on results of 1.4 billion credit card sales shows that spending in Spain has dropped by 49 per cent compared to the first quarter of 2019 and this is blamed on the lockdown.
Good buy UNICAJA Bank has seen the insurance company Santalucia spend €25 million to purchase 3.2 per cent of its stocks and become the fifth largest shareholder. This is a friendly purchase as Santalucia is the bank’s nominated insurance partner.
Paddy Power ALTHOUGH more people had more time on their hands, online betting in March at Paddy Power/ Betfair dropped by 32 per cent when compared to the same month last year. Much of this is blamed on the lack of competitive sports.
More repayments frozen THE Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK is looking to extend the assistance being given to those who are having dif ficulty in paying back loans.
It has already arranged a three month freeze on loan and credit card pay ments and is now looking to extend this to include car loans, renttoown and buynowpaylater
schemes as well as loans made by pawnbrokers. In addition it wants to see those giving pay day loans to allow a one month freeze for their borrowers.

Olive tree devastation A SHOCKING report from Holland’s University of Wageningen suggests that over the next 50 years, Spain’s olive trees could be deci mated by Xylella fastidiosa, a bac terial pest which could cost the country just under €17 billion if left unchecked. The effects of the bacteria means that the trees develop burned leaves, dry branches and the eventual death of the tree and since 2016, trees on more than 130,000 hectares in Spain have been affected. At this stage, there is no known cure for the disease and until such time as one is discovered, trees

OLIVE TREES: Picture this as barren land.
Telephone numbers required WITH effect from last Monday (April 20) train operator Renfe introduced personalised tickets for users of its AVE, Alvia and Euromed rail services as well as trains with reserved seats.
The intention is that passengers will be required to give telephone numbers when making reser vations so that the company is able to contact them in the event of a health alert or
any other problem with the service. Initially it will operate for passengers booking online directly with Renfe or through its App as well as station ticket offices.
across Spain, France, Greece and Italy will be affected, but with Spain being the largest European producer, it will be the worst hit. This is particularly worrying as olive oil plays such an important part in the economy of Spain with some 300 million trees spread across 2.1 million hectares. Although there is some produc tion in Catalonia, the largest pro duction comes from Andalucia with Jaen having the largest vol ume of oil and it should also be re membered that the fruit itself is also enjoyed throughout the world. Prices for olive oil are expected to increase significantly despite the problems of export to the USA and if Spain is to combat this po tentially devastating invasion then it has to be part of an EUwide pest protection programme. The potential cost of replanting depleted areas with new trees is high and there will be a long wait for them to become fruitful with no guarantee that they won’t be come diseased again.

BUSINESS EXTRA Flying squad FARM workers from Eastern Europe will be flown into the UK over the next few weeks in order to help harvest fruit and vegetables as there are simply insufficient workers available in Britain. Six flights have been chartered so far.
SEAT ERTE CAR makers SEAT expect to take around 2,000 employees made temporarily redundant (ERTE) back to work on April 27, but is discussing with unions the need to extend the period for a further 11,000 workers from the same date.
Easter loss SPANISH sheep farmers are feeling the bite as one of their most lucrative sales periods has gone by without them being able to sell lambs for the popular cordero lechal dish which is a tradition for many at Easter.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT OBSERVING the Labour party, as they endeavour to turn this whole virus disaster into a political issue, really is quite pathetic. With their usual arrogant attitude, they continue to insult the intelligence of the public by insisting their efforts are merely to ‘assist the government’ and that they ‘only have the country’s wellbeing at heart.’ Utter bull. They and their new leader (who also needs to answer a few questions when this is all over!) are taking every opportunity to gain Brownie points by nit picking every single piddling fault they can find. Of course mistakes have been made. Of course, in hindsight, different decisions may have been more beneficial, but overall I believe that in this completely unprecedented event in our history, the government (minus its leader for most of the time) has done a magnificent job. This has been one of the UK’s

most challenging periods ever. The logistical problems have been a nightmare. The economic and health issues something no government could ever envisage and I for one think they have risen to the oc-
casion most admirably; particularly in managing to strike the delicate balance between keeping a cool head and the creation of total panic! For the leftie whingers to keep trying to score political points is
a positive disgrace. Almost beyond belief they are now calling for the government to publish their plans for the country’s recovery when the nightmare is all over. Give us a break. I’m sure that post pandemic exit plans have been give serious reflection, but at this time the present problems must obviously take overwhelming priority. Endeavouring to deflect the government’s concentration by asking it to prematurely declare its future intentions is frankly beyond contempt. Just as predictable as the left trying to gain political points, up pop the usual suspects trying to turn it all into a racial issue. ‘Why’, they bleat, ‘are there more ethnic communities falling victim to the Corona virus than the indigenous population’? Well, let’s think… er, maybe it’s a racist virus? Well you never know do you? Give us a break. I suppose that
the situation wouldn’t have anything to do with the fact that most of the ethnic communities totally ignored the isolation and social distancing rules at the outset? Or that a number of Mosques stayed open. Or that some of the Imams were preaching that the disease was the wrath of Allah over the infidels and not an Islamic problem at all? Sometimes I really do despair of it all. I also think Trump had a point in suspending funds to the WHO. They did pander to China. The have ‘praised’ its efforts to control the virus. They did fail to admonish the Chinese hierarchy for withholding the facts of the plague for weeks before they had no choice. In my opinion both the WHO and the Chinese have great deal to answer for. UK TAX REFUND, PROVIDING SUPPORT IN DIFFICULT TIMES SINCE 2020 began there has been a topic dominating the news that to date is at the centre of all med i a re p o r t s s e e n o n t h e television, in newspapers, on the internet and in shops. Yes you’ve guessed it, we are referring to Covid-19 which has led to us changing the way we live by staying at home and isolating ourselves from those who play a huge part of our day to day lives, like time has stood still until further notice. In spite of this there are some things that do not stop and the Spanish Tax Authorities still expect us to comply with our tax obligations. This
is the reason why UK TAX REFUND would like to highlight a few things to be considered especially as it is now time to submit your Spanish Income Tax Return (RENTA). Over the past few years there has been a gradual introduction of different regulations aimed at minimising tax fraud, which is why it is very important that residents of Spain and residents of the UK account for tax correctly on their annual income, irrespective of whether this is generated in the country of residence or elsewhere. Also, if you own a property in the UK, are considering selling it and are a resident of Spain, seeking profession-
al advice before doing so will help you make the right decision, leading you in the right direction and could mean paying less tax. If you receive rental income from a UK property bear in mind you have the obligation to submit Self-Assessment tax returns to the UK tax authorities (HMRC) but also have the obligation of declaring the rental income in Spain also. This does not mean you will pay tax twice on the same income, but handling things correctly will save you future disputes with the Tax authorities. Finally, if you are a tax resident in Spain and have lost
a loved one in the UK, and are due to inherit from the deceased, please ask for our advice. You may have to complete the inheritance tax for ms and account for inheritance tax in Spain. You must take into consideration that once you begin to submit an annual income tax retur n in Spain, you should also put your tax affairs in order with HMRC in the UK. A process that needs to be dealt with simultaneously in both countries. For this, it is fundamental to receive advice from professionals who understand both the British and Spanish tax systems.
We are, as always here to assist you, call us on 965 636 938 or email us at: michelle@uktaxrefund.net. WWW.UK-TAXREFUND.COM. ‘Free Consultation’
UK TAX REFUND SL, registered agents with HMRC, will ensure every detail is taken into account. We can assist if required with completing and submitting your annual Self-Assessment Tax Retur n to HMRC, the granting of Tax Efficient Wills, Property Conveyancing and any other process which has tax implications. Get in touch with UK TAX REFUND SL, who is not only able to handle your UK tax affairs on your behalf with HMRC making dealing with both countries easier and hassle free, but can also recover any overpaid tax ensuring that your Spanish and UK tax affairs are in order.

What a difference two months make. As a result of lockdown and pet owners are forced to stay h o m e a l l d a y, o u r p e t s a re having the time of their lives! An owner of a dachshund in the UK recently posted on Twitter: “My dog has been so happy that everyone is home for quarantine that his tail has stopped working. The vet said he had sprained his tail from excessively wagging it!” An Instagram account has been set up so fans can follow her pet’s progress. Here in Spain, you can’t go out except to walk the dog. A friend has a dog; the neighbours don’t. The dog is exhausted.
DACHSHUND: Is happy to have owners at home.
As for my parents’ dogs in the UK, they’ve just got used to a run in the back garden to do their early morning business and one big walk a day without the two shorter ones they’re used to. Though they’re disappointed at the reduction in passing canine traffic to bark at out of the front window, they’re lucky being in the country with its open spaces to run in, unlike pets in urban areas. Basically, they know only a few commands: stop that bloody racket (invariably ignored); come here (obeyed, unless there’s something
much more interesting going on elsewhere); and NO (the ultimate tail-between-the-legs belly crawling fake apology). Everything else is a monologue ( ie my parents talking to themselves). Experts advising on home-schooling children and maintaining fitness levels recommend getting into strict routines during lockdown. Here again, my parents’ dogs love the new regime, apart from the stricter rules on eating ALL the food in their bowls and the 8pm clapping which wakes them up. But they’ll get used to it. I can imagine dog therapists will be kept quite busy with separationanxiety issues once owners are back at work and normality returns! IT’S RAINING, IT’S POURING GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY AS if by Lambe-Murphy’s Law, it seems, not even the weather will let up. Since lockdown began, the sky has been grey and the rain abundant. Perhaps a reflection of the global mood. Then, I look at social media, and the sun is shining in Ireland and the UK. Friends post photos, wearing shorts and polo shirts, quaffing Pimm’s, as they lunch al fresco, on roof terraces, overlooking empty streets. Meanwhile, in Marbella, the weekly trip to the supermarket has almost become an occasion. As if we may meet the love our life, whilst choosing tomatoes. Or more likely, in the wine section. As the rain poured and temperatures remained humid, trying to select the right outfit for such an outing, took more than a few attempts. In the end, I found my late grandfather’s Barbour, an oddlooking rain hat, a fresh mask and gloves, and I was good-to-go. A simple jacket from the late 50’s, that I’m pretty sure, has seen many fun times. I know it has, since I started wearing it, many years ago. My grandfather was a wonderful man. Always wise, confident and happy. Always with a great sense of style. He lived a full life, was known to enjoy a proper lunch, and despite surviving the Second World War, also went on to survive my grandmother. Sadly, not in age, as he passed before her, but he survived life with a strong lady. Don’t get me wrong, she was a pretty fabulous lady, but she was very demanding, in that, she expected perfection at all times. I guess the apple didn’t fall far from the tree. As I queued, in a slow-moving line at the local Supersol, I felt the rain and it bothered me. Then, I thought of the great man who once wore the jacket. What would he do in challenging times like these? Without realising, I removed my shades and hat, looked to the sky, and let the rain run down my face. Feeling the rain, was a joy. It made me realise, I was outside! After a long week at home, I was lucky to be in line at the store. While we may believe we know best, we
ALL DRESSED UP: For the rainy weather. should remember those who know more. Not people who claim to know it all, but rather, those who have lived. Those who have survived experiences, we may never have to endure. Recently, my heart pounded, as I saw Captain Tom Moore on the news, raising millions for the NHS. Such an amazingly positive 100-year-old gent. Such an honourable man. His manner made me remember, to stop complaining and get on with it. Smile and be extra polite, to everyone we meet. Remembering my grandmother, I know that these days I care less about perfection, and more about my sanity. I’m sure she would disagree. You know what I mean, I tend to load the dishwasher, the morning after. I attempted to cut my hair, it looks bad. So, I wear a hat. Then again, I am just like my grandmother - as even if I must wear a silly hat, it has to be Prada.

Ceri Norman is crafty VERA and District Lions’ joint press officer Ceri Norman is using her time to make future plans for the club and to keep people informed about what it does and the wide area of the province it covers. Craftlover Ceri has also been busy making old-fashioned aprons and mop caps for a traditional English tea room she plans to run at the Lions’ Party in the Park fundraiser now due to be held later in the year, as well as crocheting blankets, baking, and walking round her garden in Arboleas for exercise. When lockdown is lifted a walk by the sea is top of Ceri’s list.
Claire Andrews, dog owner CLAIRE ANDREWS says she feels that she is lucky to be a dog owner, as she at least can have some outdoor exercise with her four-legged friend Jack during the lockdown. Claire became a widow four years ago, but says that she has still enjoyed her life on the Orihuela Costa and has made a lot of new friends. “Since losing my husband, getting involved in so many local groups has been brilliant for me, and one of the sad things of what has happened right now is that I can’t meet up with them.” “It’s the same for everybody, I suppose.”
Kate Kelly, Fuengirola HOW have you been coping with the lockdown? “I have been working from home which has been harder than usual as I also have to entertain my lively son. So, we have been doing lots of baking like chocolate cupcakes then we have been counteracting that by doing Joe Wicks exercises and yoga every day.” What is the first thing you will do when the lockdown is lifted? “Well... I would love to go to a chiringuito and have some nice seafood and a glass of Cava, but I would probably settle for a pint and a pork pie!”
Irene Oldfield getting on with the gardening now it is the outdoors she is focusing on, although the recent rainy days has proved to be a frustration. Irene says she is keeping busy at home, but more than anything she is looking forward to enjoying a day trip, with a walk on the beach and a meal out.
RETIREE Irene Oldfield is managing to carry on with her Spanish classes via Skype, but it is gardening which is how she is spending much of her time just now. She and husband Chris moved into their Locaiba home in January and already have the indoors all shipshape, so

HOW have you been coping with the lockdown? I have been doing a lot of yoga and reading. My husband Allan and I have been chatting a lot with our kids and grandson on video conference calls. I even sewed us our own masks. What is the first thing you will do when the lockdown is lifted? We miss seeing our grandchildren so will see them as soon as

She is spiritual by nature and used to hold retreats in the grounds but now is using her time wisely, planning for life after lockdown and the need to be more creative. As a holistic life coach, she believes in good karma and every Saturday at 4pm she is pleased to have an excuse to dress up and host a onehour discussion about all things spiritual on her Facebook page and also give a few mini readings for those who join her.
Jane Kendrick feels safe
JANE KENDRICK moved with husband Chris to the Torrevieja area two years ago to enjoy their retirement, and she says she’d rather be in Spain than back home during the pandemic. “I was in a very built up area of Birmingham and here we just feel a wee bit
safer with what is going on,” Jane commented. “We have space and just a brief walk of 90 seconds or so for one of us to go to the supermarket.” “I love reading and so have not gone stir crazy yet, even with my hubby!” she laughed.
Susan Owens SUSAN OWENS from Santa Pola says that the lockdown has brought one big positive to her life and that is having long daily chats with her children back in the UK. “My two daughters have both had to work from home and we seem to get frustrated at the same time. We instinctively switch on our computers at the same time and have a chat. “I have been really scared of catching the virus and so a good friend has done my shopping and he leaves it outside the entrance to my apartment block. I hope everything gets better very soon.”
Samantha Hull, councillor SAMANTHA HULL is a mother of two, daughter to elderly parents and one of two British councillors in San Fulgencio. Samantha says: “As a mother and daughter I have the same worries and concerns as others and follow the rules of the lockdown as vigilantly as everyone else. And like others I have good
days and bad days.” “There are days when I’m ready to spring clean the house and others when I just want to hide under the duvet!” “This virus is very cruel but I look forward to when we can start returning to normal and build on strengths we have gained from this experience.”
DOG breeder Suzanne Mansell has a second home near Alicante. “I had booked to fly out for the whole of March, but changed my flight until the middle of month, which was obviously cancelled, “I would now be spending quarantine there (Spain) if I hadn’t. I don’t think it matters where you are, everyone is facing the same challenges. I have got my dogs to keep me busy, and my family. “Netflix is a saviour, and I love reading. “First thing I will do when this is over is catch up with friends and book a flight.”
JITKA FAULL WAS born in the Czech Republic and came to Benahavis via London and Florida in 2014 having spent most of her life as an estate agent. Last year she took the plunge and set up her own agency Centrum Marbella catering for Czech clients thinking of moving to Spain. All was going well until the pandemic and business ground to a halt but she gets up at 8.20 every morning, exercises on her rowing machine, spends at least two hours emailing potential clients, she has discovered online quizzing and is currently reading three books at once as well as annoying her husband.

N LOCKDOWN!
ards, Marbella
we possibly can, plus it will be nice to go for a proper coffee and cake and then like most people, the hairdressers!
Lucy Rowat Grande
LUCY ROWAT GRANDE lives in Calpe, where she runs her business, The Bed Centre and a project called ‘Make A Smile.’ “Some of the things keeping me sane during lockdown are family WhatsApp groups, sharing old photos, getting old household jobs done, clearing and sorting for charity shops, making bread and marmalade, planting vegetable seeds, sewing masks and diong online workouts. “Online shopping has been a life-saver, but when lockdown finishes we all need to think about supporting our local businesses and charities.”
Sheila Clifford, Riogordo
Lesley Jones, Camino de Coin
HOW have you been coping with the lockdown? “I still keep to a structured day but I have been hand-rearing three kittens a friend’s daughter found near the river. I have been keeping active by following exercise videos online and I have been studying to recertify my Addictions Therapy certificate.” What is the first thing you will do when the lockdown is lifted? “More than anything I miss human contact so I cannot wait to go for coffee and a chat with my friends. Also, I play Walking Football and am looking forward to training again.”
HOW have you been coping with the lockdown? “Normally I am home most of the time because of my husband Davey’s Lupus. I made some masks and gave them out and have been spending time on the roof terrace with our dog and kitten. I also started a WhatsApp
Lockdown group with my friends, it’s been really helpful to have support and a laugh.” What is the first thing you will do when the lockdown is lifted? “I think what I miss more than anything is going for a proper walk with our dog, Lola, and that is what I will do when we can.”
OPHELIA SMITH
JODY SMART BUSINESSWOMAN and fundraisier, Jody Smart is spending lockdown with her family in the Costa Blanca. “We’ve lived in pyjamas and lounge wear, we’ve played family games, watched family movies and gone all out keeping fit. Oh yes and have eaten far too much. “I don’t think we’ve ever been in the house together ever for this long so it is most definitely a privilege.
“I think about what’s going on in the outside world and it makes me anxious, but I bounce back to keep the family together making sure fitness classes, set meal times are scheduled and routine is in place ... they love routine it’s been the key to keeping them focused.” Catching up with her parents and elderly nannies in the UK will be one of the things Jody will do after the State of Alarm.
LILLY VAN TONGEREN WAS born in Holland and spent most of her life there before moving full time to Elviria in 2012. She is retired and happy that with a pension she is able to live a comfortable life and things haven’t changed that much for her personally with the lockdown. She either owns or fosters a number of dogs and has a large garden for them to enjoy and apart from some shopping, she spends her time promoting the Triple
A animal charity which is in desperate need of funds to care for the 300 plus animals it looks after.
Sue Parmenter-Phillips on a mission to get fit COASTAL CLEANERS ANDALUCIA founder Sue Parmenter-Phillips is on a mission under lockdown. She is working out daily in her basement gym to get as fit and healthy as possible for scuba diving, as this will be the first year she will be leading dives and helping to train other divers. In the first four weeks of the State of Alarm she did 60 kilometres on her cross trainer, having not done any running before. Unsurprisingly Sue will be aiming to get back in the water to explore the underwater world and to encourage others to take up scuba diving as soon as it’s possible.
Havovi Rabadi getting fit HAVOVI RABADI admits she was initially worried when the State of Alarm came into force and about being stuck inside, but she soon found she could connect with other people at her Mojacar Playa complex and stay fit and active at the same time. Neighbour Sandra Brown came up with the idea of a daily keep-fit routine, and thanks to Sandra’s encouragement, every day Havovi and other ladies get out on their terraces at the same time for an hour’s session of dance and exercise together, albeit from a distance. Havovi is looking forward to being able to go out and meet up with the friends she is missing so much and enjoy a drink together, but not a hug or a kiss for some while, she adds regretfully.
WAS born in Gibraltar but spent most of her working life in London in media and retired to Estepona about five years ago. She likes the area and it is within easy driving distance to visit her 96-yearold mother on the Rock. She is bilingual and has been helping some expatriate children keep up their Spanish on FaceTime and after stocking up with Easter Eggs delivered 10 anonymously to local children, ringing on doorbells and walking off. Ophelia has just started cooking hot meals for a local charity and is looking forward to the freedom of being able to go out when she wants.
ADELE STEPHENSON HAS BEEN BUSY LIVES in the Costa Blanca and normally works as a carer in the UK. “I was with an agency based in London, but finished in December for a two-month break. I had renewed my passport, which I'm still waiting for. “It’s difficult at the moment because my partner can’t work as he needs to apply to an HGV agency in England to start driving, but obviously
can’t get there at the moment, so we don’t have an income at all. I’m sure many are in the same position. “I've been making cards, candles, bath bombs and painting designs on roof tiles. When the weather permits, a bit of gardening. And I’m on my 11th book. “One of the first things I’ll do after lockdown, if my passport is here, is sign on with a new agency and get back to work.”

PROCEED WITH CAUTION
BREAKING NEWS: 4.7 magnitude Earthquake Rocks Northern Italian Coronavirus Epicentre Michelle Pepper
DEAR Euro Weekly News, Should Spain ease lockdown restrictions? On my phone this morning was a survey to this effect. My view is proceed with great caution as we have come this far and it would be very much worse if we relaxed too soon. I have always regarded the volume of tourism in recent times to be one of the major threats to the planet and I feel this dreadful virus was spread globally in the main, due to this factor. Here in Spain, I commend the police diligence and the Spanish people for taking every step possible to heed the safety measures necessary and if, now, there is a glimmer of light ahead, please be sure. Nobody has died from being locked in, or up, or down... although like everybody it is a very lonely time and I am with the government and our town hall all the way in maintaining the present course of action. To those who choose to blame one man, Boris Johnson, name-calling and bigotry are not the way forward and certainly, the UK Prime Minister is hailed by all parties as having done all he could... it’s easy to sit back and criticise. Thank you Euro Weekly... I could not have found a better paper to see me through the weeks. Yvonne Lindsay, Fuengirola
OUR VIEW Deeper understanding IN theory, all of us are vulnerable to coronavirus, but in practice how well we fare has to do with pre-existing conditions that are not only medical but economic, social and political. Age was the first factor most of us heard about in the unequal impact of this virus. It seemed to affect older people the most and children hardly at all, with a lot of younger adults having mild cases. Then, March was full of stories of desperately ill and dying young people as cautionary tales warning that no one was guaranteed an exemption from this. The shutdowns that are meant to prevent its spread have wildly varying economic impacts. Some suddenly lost jobs. Some whose work was deemed necessary had to continue in the face of the danger of contagion - medical workers, firefighters, transport workers and food workers, from those on farms to supermarket stockers and cashiers. As schools were closed, the digital divide meant that more affluent families with computers, iPads and good internet connections had a very different home educational situation than families without these amenities. Some who live alone have been reporting devastating loneliness; people who live with others have reported everything from exasperation to fear. Warnings are emerging about a likely wave of mental health problems from these new situations. Domestic violence has risen dramatically in many places. Nearly everyone on Earth is, or will be, affected by this pandemic, but each of us is affected differently. Some of us are financially devastated, some are gravely or fatally ill or have already died. The pandemic is a spotlight that illuminates underlying problems. Taking care of each other begins with understanding the differences.

Let’s not relax too soon.
To know as well that they’re under quarantine! No matter how small an earthquake, these people have gone through enough fear to probably last them a lifetime.
Naughty neighbours Dear Euro Weekly News, For weeks now, my Spanish neighbours have ignored the lockdown. It started when each day they invited in a man walking his two dogs. I hung a huge notice out of my bedroom window stating, in Spanish, “man with two dogs, two-metre distancing is the law.” Next day he arrived without his dogs. I resorted to taking photos. He hurled abuse at me as did the neighbours. Now, the son goes out aged about 50, unemployed, every day for about two hours. Easter Sunday the two granddaughters and their mother, visited, obviously to see their grandmother, their uncle and their father. Yes, I have photos. These people are endangering lives. Every day I hang out my notice, plus I now hang out a sign, draped with a black scarf stating the total deaths in Spain, this I obviously have to change daily. I cannot get through, on the phone to the Guardia, we are all helpless in this tragedy, especially when people like this do not self isolate. Every night I clap the carers, those Spanish neighbours never do. I am 75 years old, I have been out once shopping. I am in lockdown as required by this emergency Spanish law. I am proud to be a resident of Spain, Spain is saving my life, and I will survive, but will others with neighbours like mine? How many more will have to die because of this appalling attitude? It defies belief. Valerie Mash
Holidaymakers to Spain’s airports on the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca set to be Coronavirus tested on arrival Murray Wasik Many years ago when I started working overseas we had to have before travelling health cards with various inoculations, ie cholera, yellow fever, etc, this may be a future requirement again with this coronavirus.
Neighbours Who Shouted Abuse at NHS Nurse During Illegal Party Fined Just £370 Jackie Butcher Ridiculous, needed to be locked away, or even better put in an emergency ward cleaning and assisting. Then he would see what nurses do every day risking their lives and their families.
Spain’s Government hints walks for elderly ‘on the table’ in bid to ease lockdown restrictions Jill Swain At 71 I am classed as at risk, but I do not count myself as elderly; with no health problems I am desperate for a decent walk in the fresh air and preferably sunshine. Exercising indoors just doesn’t cut it. And I am certainly not frightened to go out - paranoia is more dangerous than a virus!
A sour taste Dear EWN, Please allow me to share my nightmare experience with Orange the mobile and internet supplier. It started when I noticed I did not have an internet connection. I telephoned the English-speaking helpline (laughs out loud) and the agent said a technician would call me back, little did I know this would lead to a total of 25 telephone calls and speaking to 22 different people between Monday and Friday. From excuses of the Fraud Department cancelling my account to ‘the system’ doing it by itself, many dropped phone calls and even a trip into Fuengirola to an Orange shop and received a fine from the police for being out. I then spoke to a young Orange operator who called to arrange an appointment with the Tecnicos. As if by magic they arrived 30 minutes later and fitted a new router and explained at some point my landline number was changed as was the password to access wifi with my mobile. Orange cut my internet package completely without warning and without reason and appear to be useless at rectifying the problem causing days of stress and anger. Their efforts to solve the problem stemming from their huge blunder have been nothing short of a disgrace. Ronnie Waugh

Helping hands
MARBELLA MOMENTS BY NICOLE KING MARBELLA NOW is always worth watching but more than ever during the lockdown there are individuals and groups who are making a great difference and our show is hopefully helping to get the word out. We connect to Tanzania to talk with Paul and Gemma Carr who are the founders of Collective Calling. They were spending time at their ‘Centre of Hope,’ which rescues, rehabilitates and reintegrates street children back into loving families, but then couldn’t get back home when borders closed. For years their charity has also delivered food packs to the homeless in Spain and thankfully with their team back they have managed to rise to the occasion with the overwhelming out cry for help on the Costa del Sol being suddenly twentyfold. We also chat with one of their volunteers in Marbella, Audrey Spearing and hear what it’s like handling not just all the shopping, packing and distribution,
but all the administrative work of compiling the lists of families and handling the funds. There’s a drop off point at Grassify in San Pedro for supplies and an account for making donations. www.collectivecalliing.com. Kara of the Boardwalk and Penny of the Harbour have also been giving their all with the infallible support of their families and friends. The #FoodFairies are now officially a charity ‘Hadas Caradas’ and are also feeding as many families as possible and cover their basic needs. They have drop off points for non-perishable donations at Iceland in Fuengirola at all times, sponsored by Euro Weekly!! and at Iceland Puerto Banus Wednesdays from 11am 1pm - contact Kara for other points Tel: 602 531 928. #BetterTogether in action in more ways than one as they have also invited Lily van Tongeren, volunteer with Triple A Animal rescue centre, to join them to help get supplies to support the animals that also still need feeding and taking care of with dignity. (You girls rock!!!).
CHARITY: So many helping hands.

But the truth is, he is to blame MIKE SENKER IN MY OPINION Views of a Grumpy Old Man DONALD TRUMP! Honestly I’ve tried not to be grumpy and write about him but seeing him on TV every day has made it impossible to ignore. All you Trump lovers bring it on as we are obviously not watching the same ranting bully. The man thinks he is the king of America telling the governors of the 50 states that he will tell them what to do and when to do it. Monday April 13 saw one of the most chaotic White House coronavirus press briefings yet, with President Trump playing a campaign style montage to White House reporters and getting into a shouting match with a woman reporter from CBS after she asked him why he wasted a month before the pandemic exploded. I was absolutely gobsmacked by the President’s meltdown. President Donald Trump has led the way as a champion of hydroxychloroquine, branding the drug a ‘gamechanger’ without any proof whatsoever
except saying he has spoken to some unnamed person that it has helped. Many doctors have said that this drug can do more harm than good because of its side effects of damage to heart and vision. Yet every day he bangs on about it actually saying ‘what harm can it do?’ Eric Topol, director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute, said the promotion was ‘reckless, feckless and deplorable.’ Even his beloved and devoted follower Pies Morgan said Donald had gone too far. Everything Trump does, according to him, is ‘tremendous.’ I do not know how many times he uses that word in a press conference but it’s a lot! Everything he does, according to him, is bigger, better and greater than anyone else in the history of the world and he is not to blame for anything. The truth is he is to blame, not for everything, but sometimes you just have to put your hands up and say ‘you know what, I got a couple of things wrong. But I promise you I will learn from them and will make sure I learn from them.’ The chances of this happening with this narcissistic egomaniac is somewhere between slim and none. I can’t wait to see tonight’s episode of the Emperor’s New Clothes starring Donny Trump.

So much help is needed by so many that we also had Joel Kennedy back on the show. He launched the ‘Help the Homeless’ Facebook page where everyone is concentrating their offers and requests to then pass on to whichever charity is most suited. Well done Joel for the initiative; who’d of thought five years ago it would have been literally a life-saver for so many over the past weeks! A sad lesson to understand what others have been going through for years… Regarding our very vulnerable elderly community there are also many incentives in place to keep them fed, safe and happy. We’ve been redirecting all enquiries to Age Concern Marbella Tel. 689 355 198. Graciela Waen of the Rotary Club of Benahavis in collaboration with the San Pedro chapter introduces a new chatline for the elderly if they’re feeling lonely, need help or just want to chat for a while. They can speak in French, Spanish or English. The Andalucia chat line number is Tlf. 953 820 070, available from 9am to 9pm.

LOTTERY UK NATIONAL LOTTERY
FOR NEXT 7 DAYS PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Let others whinge if they will. Being determined to get your own way, they will stand little chance. Recent disagreements have left a sour taste. In the best of worlds, things will not always go your way. Life would be boring if that were the case. What you need now is a good dose of realism washed down with some sound financial planning. Be likeable and you will be liked. Simple, isn't it?
ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Awkward situations usually bring out the best in you and this week proves that. In the longer term, you will be grateful to those making things difficult now. Midweek sees you turning the tables, which gives much satisfaction.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Be determined not to be intimidated by someone who thinks that they are superior. Decide who you will take advice (or orders) from and stick to it. You are not the person that you were in the past and others need to realise it.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Outside influences and pressures make it hard to concentrate. However, finances in particular need attention, so do not be distracted by others trying to put a finger into your 'pie'. Do not be concerned about making changes in your social life because this, in turn, will sort out some of your more immediate practical problems.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Being unusually uncertain of yourself this week could throw confusion into your ordered life. There is a partnership problem to be sorted out. Links with personal matters, however, make this tricky. Let some time pass so that someone close can get the message without feeling pressured.
LEO (July 24 - August 23) Some loss of control over a project is irksome. A new start that seemed so promising seems to be going off course. A real injection of time and effort will make all the difference, however. Midweek, you see things going in the right direction again. Keep finances simple and try not to combine business with pleasure. That way lie complications.
VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) You are holding a good hand. Deal with the right people and the rewards are high. There is potential for being cheated out of something that is morally yours, so it may be necessary to be 'difficult' or 'awkward' to get what you deserve.
LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Being a brave and forthright soul, it is easy this week to dispel the negative thoughts of others. A relationship that makes you hesitate could be of great benefit to you. There is little to lose by 'going for it'. The outcome could be beyond your dreams, something that you have not had many of lately.

SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) Hidden forces are working away in the background. These give good and bad influences but life will not be dull this week. Sometimes you wish others would leave you alone. Not that you are being anti-social. We all reach a point when we need space to think.

CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Avoiding a decision will not help this week. Who will deal with this matter but you? A relationship is threatened if you do not make a move. Will loved ones always be there for us no matter how much we neglect them? Why take such a chance? We only get out of life what there is willingness to put in.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) In your heart of hearts you know what you want out of life. It is a little timidity of spirit that is now stopping you. I know that recent experiences have sapped your confidence, but I have a message for you. Now is the time that you are most likely to make progress in your chosen field. Do not hesitate through lack of confidence in your talents. Build on your strengths.

FRANKLY SPEAKING
STOP IT! IT’S SILLY!
BY JULIE FRANK
A FEW weeks ago, I wrote about conspiracies. Blimey, the tin foil hat brigade have come out in force since lockdown - it’s never ending! T h e re h a v e b e e n s o m a n y m o re ‘theories’ since. Gives me plenty of fodder for another rant though! The latest ridiculous claim I’ve noticed doing the rounds is that Bill Gates predicted and planned the corona virus outbreak. Mainly because Gates did a talk in 2015 explaining that a highly infectious virus could be more deadly than war. I mean, come on, it’s not much to base a conspiracy on! It’s not like it hasn’t happened before! They say that Gates engineered the virus as a form of controlling the population. Also, that he’s profiting from a vaccine, which hasn’t even been developed yet! Firstly, why would he want to reduce the world’s population? It would be mean less customers for Microsoft! I’m yet to come across a viable motive for this. Then there’s vaccines, here we go again! More fuel for the anti-vaxxers. I don’t understand these people. There’s a
ANTI-VAXXERS: I don’t understand these people. strange community of people out there who believe there’s something sinister behind them. MMR, for example. In 1998, researchers published a paper stating that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine
caused Autism. The study was based on all of 12 children and has since been disproven. There’s no link between the vaccine and Autism, but this still doesn’t satisfy the anti-vaxxers. They leave their children unvaccinated against terrible diseases
through fear of becoming Autistic. As I have mentioned before, I have Autism. I’m on the high-functioning end of the spectrum with Asperger’s. I don’t see it as a disability. In fact, if a ‘cure’ was offered to me, I wouldn’t take it. I love that I’m a different from most females. I wouldn’t want to change how I view the world with my eyes - it’s fascinating! To be told by anti-vaxxers that they’d rather have their children die of a preventable disease than be like me is, Quite Frankly, appalling. You can lead a wonderful life with Autism with the right understanding and support, especially if you find your right path. You cannot lead a wonderful life with death! I find these parents disgraceful and insulting. If you check out a list of famous people who have or are thought to have had Autism, they range from Einstein to Marilyn Monroe - hardly undesirables! I honestly think that isolation is giving people too much time to think. It was bad enough before! These people need to find something more constructive to do learn a new language, reorganise the house, write a book. There’s so many more constructive things to do than annoy the rest of us with conspiracies! Stop it. It’s silly.

Deaths from Flu Medication : Finding the may be confused right cocktail for you! with Covid-19 MS BIPOLAR
By John Smith IT will be some time, if ever, before the truth will be revealed about how and why the Coronavirus Covid-19 appeared and whether it was a natural event or a man-made atrocity, but in the meantime countries all over the world are trying to combat the effects with mixed success. At the time of writing, latest figures suggest that 165,000 people have died and their death certificates list Covid-19 as the reason, but it is possible that this figure is wildly inaccurate because the number of deaths attributable solely to the pandemic may be greatly inflated. According to World Health Organisation figures up to 650,000 people die of flu each year and in an early study by the UK Office of National Statistics, deaths in March supposedly from the virus showed that 90 per cent of those who died had evidence of underlying health problems such as heart disease, upper respiratory tract infection, dementia or diabetes. Looking at Spain, the number of deaths from flu seem to have been increasing annually with a
UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED
TACKLING THE VIRUS: Front line health workers. massive upsurge in 2018 and then a drop (although deaths were still high) in 2019. Figures suggest that from 2015 to 2017, deaths in Spain had varied from around 500 to just over 1,000 but then in 2018, it shot up to almost 15,000 due to a number of factors which saw more than one strain appear, a longer than usual duration of the flu circulating and an unexpected rise in the number of those over 65 who succumbed to the virus. The following year 2019, the number to die was 6,300 so it is clear that flu has become stronger and has greatly increased the number of deaths over the last two years. Things are now confused because the symptoms of coronavirus and Covid-19 are very similar and emergency workers on the frontline are more interested in trying to save lives than identifying the strain so it is almost a natural assumption that Covid-19 is the culprit.
It is believed that there are 2.5 million confirmed cases of the virus around the world and with a population of 7.8 billion which equates to a tiny percentage of those still alive. The figure for Spain with a population of around 46 million is 200,000 diagnosed with 21,000 deaths and British research suggests many who would have been likely to die during the year from one form of illness or another have had their deaths brought forward by six months thanks to the pandemic. Some psychologists believe that the longer the lockdown lasts the greater the risk that death rates will increase due to the fact that some people are unable or unwilling to attend hospitals for cancer and heart checks, others will start to become mentally unstable due to the boredom, especially if living alone and many will suffer from economic hardship, which will in turn affect their mental state.
FINDING the right medication or combination of meds can be a long and tiring journey. The journey begins with making the decision to saying YES to trying medication and sticking to them! Then it can be a long process of finding what works and what really doesn’t. Bipolar disorder varies greatly from person to person, and so does the right medication. What works for one person may not work for another. My GP decided to start with what medication to prescribe based on the symptoms I reported to him and then make adjustments from there. It’s very important to be open and honest with your doctor so they are really able to help you. You should tell them about any side effects you experience, and whether or not you really did take your meds and if you think they working and why!! From my GP I was passed on to the Mental Heath support team, where I was assessed by a psychiatrist and psychologist twice a week to start with. I went through all three stages when I got my bipolar diagnosis… • DENIAL > I’m not ill, there is nothing wrong with me, I’m fine. I don’t need medication. I used to flush them down the toilet!! I was angry and hurt. • ACCEPTANCE > Nobody chooses to have bipolar. Nobody is to blame. Maybe this is why I have always been different? What if these pills will help me live a relatively normal life? • RECOVERY > Knowing that I do need medication to be ‘well’ along with certain lifestyle changes means I have not been sentenced this lifetime of suffering. So yes, medication can help but its no magical cure, self care, meditation, therapy and
sleep are also so important. Tracking your self care and moods will help you notice the earliest signs of a possible relapse. I have been on medication now for eight years yet I still have a problem with it, I tend to hide the fact that I have to take medication to be well. I’m actually scared of what I would be like, who would I be, if I wasn’t on them. But I have come to terms that I would rather take medication and feel ‘okay’ than to be riddled with pain, dark and suicidal thoughts and anxiety every day. My point is , NO I don’t believe in pushing someone into taking medication is the right way, but to say, that it’s important to be open to treatment, there’s no need to suffer in silence or to be proud. Just because you take medication it is not a sign of weakness. The bottom line is the right treatment can help restore some of your quality of life and allow you to feel healthy once again. I would like to say a massive THANK YOU to all of you who email in, I do love reading your letters. Just remember that you are not alone in this! I write on personal experiences I have come across over the years, I am by no means a professional or a doctor, but if I can help and make just ONE person not feel so alone with this uphill battle, then I will of course carry on writing. So please keep writing to me or follow my facebook page @mswillow bipolar where you will be able to read this and past columns. Lots of love Ms Bipolar X

STAY POSITIVE IN LOCKDOWN
DIONE LOCKYER AS we are in our sixth week of lockdown due to the Coronavirus, I have received many emails and calls from people whom are extremely distressed and worried. How will I cope? What am I going to do? What is the actual truth about the virus? How will it affect my life? My mind is too busy, how can I stop it? These questions boil down to one habit... THE FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN, OR SIMPLY JUST FEAR! The truth is, we don’t know all of the answers! In fact, we may never know all the answers but ask yourself, do you NEED to know EVERYTHING in order to feel happy? There are two ways you can look at the present and how you wish to remember it. 1. With fear and 2. With gratitude. If you look at every situation with fear, it will create more worry, stress, anxiety and may even lead you to deep depression. Is that how you want to remember this time? Does leading with fear serve you? When leading with fear, do you feel excited when you wake in the morning or does it fill you with dread? Do you go to sleep feeling relaxed
and carefree? Most importantly, do you want to spend the rest of your life thinking and feeling this way? If the answer is no, look at option 2. With gratitude, you look to all of the things that you are grateful for. Have you ever sat there and told yourself or others that you never have time to video call friends, never have time to play with your children? Do you ever moan about rushing here, there and everywhere wishing you had more time to do the things that you enjoy? Have you ever felt like a hamster in a wheel, running around and around but never actually getting anywhere? Well now you can use this time to change all of that! Look deep within yourself. Is there a book you’ve always wanted to read? A skill you’ve wanted to learn? Have you always wanted to have more time with your husband, wife, mother or father? Have you ever wished that you could just sit in your garden or by the window and just breathe? Use thus time to do ALL of the things you’ve dreamed of doing, start that course, read that book, cuddle with your partner and watch a movie because when all this is over and normality resumes, you will soon wish you had spent the time wisely. Remember be grateful for what you DO have rather than worry about what you don’t.
If you would like to dig a little deeper into your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours, please email me coachingwithdione@gmail.com.

Classics for Lockdown THERE are many video performances from a selection of artists and musicians to entertain during the lockdown but there doesn’t appear to be a huge amount of classical concerts available. At the end of March, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra launched its Friday Night Club which features never-before-seen concert footage of some of its most recent concerts. These were recorded live before the lockdown and so far there have been four concerts aired all lasting around an hour each. Each concert starts at 7.30pm UK time every Friday at the RSNO’s Facebook and YouTube channels but the four earlier concerts can be seen on the website https://www.rsno.org.uk/. There are also a number of unusual challenges including one showing you how to create a Samba band in your kitchen.
Gibraltar Lego exhibition
PAUL MAXWEL: Ready to welcome you to Joys Live.
IT appears that so many people (not just children) are digging out the Lego boxes to keep themselves occupied during lockdown. The Gibraltar Cultural Services department is going to try to obtain sufficient interesting models to allow it to run its own Lego Lockdown exhibition, once everyone is allowed back onto the streets and to mix again. It may be that you or your family won’t be able to travel to Gibraltar due to distance, but if you can, enter your creation with an expression of interest or preferably photographs to in fo@culture.gi with the closing date being Friday May 8. If you can’t get to the Rock, why not suggest to friends you have your own competition by placing photographs of your masterpieces on Facebook or via other social media.

This week Celebrity Chef & Fellow Master Chef Steven Saunders, proprietor of The Little Geranium in La Cala shares a new revised signature recipe accompanied by an exclusive easy to follow YouTube video!
Famous Crispy Duck salad, quicker, no fuss, home version! Steven Saunders FMCGB The Little Geranium La Cala de Mijas www.thelittlegeranium.com
I HAVE been cooking for over 40 years, so you would expect that I might have a few signature dishes up my sleeve over that time! One of the dishes that I will always be remembered for is my crispy duck salad which has been with me since opening my first restaurant in Cambridgeshire in the UK in 1986, The Pink Geranium. Regular clients and readers would have seen my previous recipes and articles for this dish. However, it’s not so easy to cook the original one at home because of the slow confit process of the duck legs and because the sauce is made freshly from an infusion of loads of spices and flavours cooked slowly for many hours.
CREATIVE: There is a step by step YouTube video available.
So this week I went to work on creating an easier version of this popular dish. In truth, at one point I wanted to lose the dish as a signature because like everything (as the creator) you get to the point of wanting to do something totally different. So I wrote a menu a few years ago without it on and was totally bombed out with complaints, emails, personal notes and WhatsApp messages all saying …where is the crispy duck? It soon went back on the menu! Sales of the duck salad at lunch and dinner are by far the highest of all my popular dishes and I have dishes like surf and turf, beef wellington, prawn tempura and hand dived scallops with steamed Galician clams, the duck salad out sells them all! It has stood the test of time and is always No 1 on the Geranium sales charts! However you will still need
some time to make this recipe, all good food takes a bit of time. You need to roast the duck and make the sauce, but the roasting process is far easier than the original confit recipe. Also the sauce can be made up in advance and kept in plastic or glass bottles in your fridge. The base of the new sauce is a bought in sauce but we infuse flavours to make it feel homemade. So I think we have a good version which is far simpler and it tastes amazing! Especially for Euro Weekly News readers I have created a step by step YouTube video to go with this recipe. All you have to do is go to the website www.eu roweeklynews.com or www.the littlegeranium.com click on the video link and watch it. No need to write the recipe down because here it is below! What could be more fun than to make our famous crispy duck this weekend?… Enjoy!
Steven Saunders’s opinions are his own and are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or sponsors.
New (home version) Crispy Duck salad (a whole duck serves eight) I would recommend looking in the freezer sections of the supermarket to find a duck. You should see a whole duck usually called Pato Peking. Ingredients for the duck 1 whole duck (defrosted) with legs removed 500ml of vegetable oil Maldon salt A little fresh thyme or rosemary 4 cloves garlic 6 heaped tablespoons of cornflour 1 tablespoon of mixed spice or Chinese 5 spice For the special sauce 250 ml of sweet chilli sauce 2 tablespoons of good quality soy sauce 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons of sesame oil 1 teaspoon dried chilli flakes 2 teaspoons of hot red sauce like tabasco or similar
1 stick of cinnamon 1 piece of ginger 2/ 3 cm peeled but not cut (leave whole) 1 piece of star anise (optional not essential) 2 whole peeled cloves of garlic 1 small glass of red wine Juice of 1 lemon For the Salad Assorted salad leaves 1 red onion peeled and finely chopped 1 small bunch of fresh coriander (picked, so that you have little sprigs) 1 small piece of fresh root ginger peeled and sliced finely (like Julienne) The seeds of 1 fresh pomegranate For Pickled Cucumber ½ a cucumber (or a whole small cucumber) seeds removed then sliced 2 tablespoons of white wine vinegar
2 tablespoons of white wine 2 flat tablespoons of white sugar Pinch of salt Method for cucumber Heat the vinegar wine and sugar together until the sugar dilutes but does not colour. Allow to cool so that it is no hotter than warm and pour over the cut cucumber Allow it to marinate the cucumber for at least an hour Method to cook duck Remove the legs off the duck and remove any of the inside left in the duck like the neck or livers. Wash the duck inside and out. Place the duck into a Pyrex baking dish or similar, breasts down (upside down). Place legs in same dish and pour over the vegetable oil then the thyme or rosemary and throw in the garlic. Finally season with Maldon salt.
In a preheated oven (200ºC) roast the duck for 20 minutes and then lower the heat to 150ºC and cook slowly for two hours. Check the duck it should be cooked but not be too crisp (the oil will help keep it moist and soft) If it needs longer put it back in the low oven for another 30 minutes. When the meat falls away from the bone easily remove from oven and allow to cool. Now (wearing latex gloves) remove the meat from the entire duck avoiding any bone and gristle. Break the meat down with your fingertips to create a bowl full of picked duck meat. Reserve. To make the special sauce Simply mix together all the ingredients into a saucepan and warm through on a medium heat. Simmer until all the flavours amalgamate well. Simmer for at least 20 minutes.
Now remove the big pieces of garlic, cinnamon, star anise, ginger etc. Pour into a jug or into a plastic squeezy bottle. To construct Toss the picked duck into the cornflour and coat evenly but not thickly. Cook in a deep fat fryer (or wok with veg oil) in 2/3 batches NOT ALL TOGETHER at a temperature of approx. 190ºC Allow to cook for one minute at 190ºC then remove and drain onto kitchen paper and season with salt and the mixed spices and then cook the next batch.

CHARITIES ACE CHARITY ‘El Refugio’ in La Cala de Mijas is a registered charity. We have on average 275 dogs in our care and we receive no help from the Town Hall or the Andalucian government. We desperately need foster homes and adoptants for our many dogs, especially the small ones and puppies who do not do well in a big shelter. We are grateful for any help offered, including donations of food and blankets. Visiting times are from 13.00 to 15.00 and you can always turn up or make an appointment by calling Denise on 669 018 736. Our website is www.ace-charity.org where you can view all the dogs in our care. (93320) ADANA THE ANIMAL SHELTER IN ESTEPONA. We always need volunteers to walk and socialise with our dogs and help with cleaning. We also need good homes for our animals that you can see on www.adana.es. Kennels open every day 10-1.30, Camino de Casares, near Parque de los Pedregales, Estepona. (5 minutes from the Poligono) For more information call 952 113 467, available from 10.00am until 14.00pm. (93319) SEPE the horse and donkey charity is open to the public at weekends from 10.00 to 5.00. Volunteers are much needed in all departments and are welcome at any time. For our riding for the disabled classes, we are also in need of extra helpers. We
23 - 29 April 2020 are nationally registered by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior (164640) but only with your support can we give the equine a voice. If you can just commit to 2 or 3 euros a month it will really help make a difference. You can find us at Lauro Golf Equestrian Centre, Alqueria, Alhaurin de la Torre. Tel. 608 258 950 info@sepeonline.net www.sepeonline.net (93321) SOS ANIMAL REFUGE we have dogs, young and old looking for homes. Some of our dogs have been with us for some time and would love to find a cosy spot to curl up in and a knee on which to rest their heads. If you have room in your heart and home we would love to hear from you. We do not put our dogs to sleep no matter how old, they are safe with us. For day to day needs and to pay for veterinary care, we much appreciate the support we receive. We desperately need items to sell on our market stall to help raise funds and are happy to come and collect. So, if you are having a clear-out, please contact us on 605 227 155. If you would like to know more about rehoming, please call 653 257 875. Visit our website www.sos-animals.org or please phone Sandy on 952 385 923 or 666 814 056 if you would like to make a donation or help in any way. Queen’s birthday quandary
NO GUNS: Flag flying protocol was updated. IT was Her Majesty the Queen’s 94th birthday this Tuesday, but the monarch decided to skip her traditional gun salute and flag flying protocol was updated to reflect the fact that many people are currently self-isolating or social distancing.
It was the first time in her 68 years as Queen that the annual birthday commemoration did not take place. Not to worry as ‘Her Maj’ has two birthdays. The Queen's official birthday is in June, however, it has already been an-
nounced that the annual Trooping of the Colour, that was due to take place on June 13, will no longer be going ahead. Buckingham Palace said a few weeks ago that a number of alternatives were being discussed.
