Phase 1 vs Phase 2 MOST of Spain is currently in Phase 1 of the de-escalation plan, however, some areas such as La Gomera or El Hierro are currently in Phase 2. Seeing as regulations are constantly changing under new decrees, it is important to know the difference on what you are allowed to do within your phase and what you cannot do. Neither in Phase 1 or Phase 2 can you leave the province, mobility between provinces is still prohibited and is expected to recommence at a later date. In Phase 1 family and friends can hold reunions at homes, within the same province, of up to 10 people. These meetings should not include any vulnerable risk groups. Funerals and wakes will also be allowed for a limited number of people, 15 if its open-air and 10 if it’s in a
FREEDOM: With an added sense of responsibility. closed space. Shops up to 400sqm can open, however capacity will be capped at 30 per cent and social distancing of 2m should be upheld. There will be preferential hours for customers over the age of 65. Street markets will commence with a quarter of its usual stalls and capacity
will be capped at 30 per cent. Also, in Phase 1 is the reopening of bars and restaurants’ terraces which is capped at 50 per cent. Phase 2 will be quite similar to Phase 1, the main difference being that it will accommodate for more people by increasing maximum
capacities. Places of worship and shops will amplify their capacity from 30 per cent to 50 per cent. Restaurants and bars with over 70sqm will begin serving clients inside at 30 per cent capacity and with table service only. Shopping centres will also re-open but at 40 per cent capacity but with no
common spaces. Theatres and cinemas will also reopen at 30 per cent capacity. The newest regulation to be announced under this phase is the reopening of swimming pools and beaches, which will also be controlled. Pools will be capped at 30 per cent capacity and beaches will have to ensure a two-metre distance between individuals. The maximum number of people allowed at the beach as a group is 15, unless these all live together. It is important to note that with these added freedoms comes an added sense of responsibility which we as citizens of a community must uphold. If sanitary conditions worsen or populations act irresponsibly then there is a possibility of being either held back in the same phase or even demoted to the previous phase.

A NEW bicycle lane is to be built alongside the CV-870 road linking Orihuela City to the Montepinar urbanisation which lies at the foot of the northern slope of the Sierra de Orihuela. A contract for the project has been advertised, and the work will take three months at a budget of over €238,000.

First taste of Freedom BARS and restaurants were able to reopen this week across the whole of southern Alicante Province for the first time since the State of Alarm was introduced in mid-March. It also means residents can travel right across the region, rather than worrying whether they would be pulled over for straying into an adjoining health department. After a week-long delay in the Alicante and Elche health districts being allowed to join Orihuela and Torrevieja in Phase 1 of relaxing the lockdown measures, some semblance of normality has returned. That clearly featured a muchneeded lift to the heavily-hit hospitality trade in British expat and tourist areas like Gran Alacant, La Marina village, Santa Pola, and El Campello, as well as the larger centres of Alicante, Crevillente and Elche. Local Police forces in areas

Onion Price Defeat ALICANTE Province farmers have been defeated on home turf in a cheap onion war with New Zealand and Peru. The local growers say their own crops are just not worth picking because of undercutting from overseas markets. Locally grown onion prices are 50 per cent down on what they were a year ago, and cheap imports have made it unviable to pick the crops as retailers have done deals with wholesalers. It appears even worse for potato growers, as they say that prices are 60 per cent lower compared to May 2019. tions at cheap prices, because the criminal gang did not pay tax to the government. The organisation had a vast network of companies to get the diesel into Spain, as well as sales staff and managers to look respectable.
Fruit Watch POLICE patrols have been stepped up across the Vega Baja region to stop fruit thefts from farms. Pilferers are trying to take advantage of the extra produce in local orchard and harvesting areas during the current summer fruit picking season. It’s an additional problem that farmers are facing in addition to lower numbers of pickers working for them due to international travel restrictions caused by the State of Alarm. Many of the regular labourers come from either Eastern Europe or North Africa, and have been able to get into Spain, leaving growers worried that they will be left with produce that cannot be collected and sold.

Orihuela Beach
IMPROVING CONDITIONS: Beach cleaning on the Orihuela Costa.
BEACH cleaning work is being stepped up across the Orihuela Costa, with even stricter standards in the wake of the Covid-19 crisis. The State of Alarm period has given the local council a good chance to get everything looking good, and as safe as possible. Orihuela’s Street Cleaning and Refuse Collection councillor, Dámaso Aparicio, said that the current contract runs until early August, and they see a new deal costing €532,000 per annum. Aparicio said: “We are aware of the importance of the beaches to tourism in the area, and we have redoubled our efforts due to the risks posed by Covid-19.”
“The new contract will guarantee continuity and build on improving what has been done,” he added. Besides direct maintenance of the beaches, the new tender mentions the hiring of people to empty litter bins as well as removing algae from the sand. “The beaches of Orihuela have been given many awards like 11 Blue Flags, as well as having the Q quality mark. We need to maintain that standard,” Dámaso Aparicio said. Walkers have now been allowed to go onto the beaches at Punta Prima, Cala Estaca, Cala Bosque, Playa de Caleta, and the Barranco Rubio.

The group, formed by chefs and restaurant owners, is looking to help their colleagues as the lockdown rules are relaxed and customers return to their establishment. The pre-paid vouchers are being sold to people to get some early liquidity going for restaurants that were forced to shut in mid-March. The Alicante Gastronómica Solidaria has prepared over 55,000 menus to people across the area in just one month to local municipalities, including Orihuela, Torrevieja, Los Montesinos, Almoradi, and Daya Vieja.

Airport Reopens S PA I N ’ S t r a n s p o r t m i n i s t e r, Jose Luis Abalos, has allowed Alicante-Elche airport to be reopened for international flights. Only five airports under an original government decree permitted international services, with the exception of health emergencies, and that did not include they key facility for Alicante Province. The list of airports allowing overseas services has now been expanded to 10, after one regional business organisation called the restriction “an attack on on Alicante Province’s economy.” The tough talk came from the UEPAL president, Juan José Sellés, who said that it was “unacceptable” that the fifth-largest airport
in the country did not seem to be a priority of the gover nment, and was only running some domestic services and emergency flights. José Sellés also added that Alicante Province was a “reference point for tourism in Spain” and “was not being looked after properly by people in charge of the country.” The president of the Hospitality Industry Association of Benidorm and Costa Blanca, Nuria Montes, branded the original decree as “unreasonable.” Montes said that not opening other airports was sending a “message to the tourist markets to sink Spain, asking them to operate in other areas rather than Spain where things are handled a bit better.”

Ban lifted SPAIN has lifted its travel ban on Italy, which makes a July return of Ryanair and easyJet flights to the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca more likely. The news was announced on May 19 by the Spanish government, but anybody who gets in by plane or sea will have to go into 14 days of self-isolation under the country's quarantine rules. The move though is seen as another positive signal following the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, especially involving two of the key European countries to have suffered the most during the coronavirus crisis. Ryanair has said that they plan to resume a reduced schedule in July, and they have many links to key Italian centres like Milan and Rome from Alicante-Elche and Malaga airports, used by holidaymakers and business people. Vueling and easyJet also have extensive services between Italy and Spain, with Malaga an especially popular destination for Italians during the summer. There are many issues still to be resolved over health and safety as the embattled air travel industry tries to rebuild, but the Spanish government news does come as a psychological boost as the country continues its recovery.
MORE than half of Spain’s health staff working in hospitals during the coronavirus crisis have symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and 80 per cent are suffering from anxiety, a new study reveals. Preliminary results from an investigation carried out by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid Work Psychology and Safety Studies Laboratory show that 53 per cent of hospital health workers display symptoms compatible with PTSD and 79.5 per cent have symptoms of anxiety, of which 21.2 per cent could be severe cases. The study is based on the experience of 1,243 health workers at different hospitals. Nine out of 10 work in Madrid, Spain’s worst affected area by the Covid-19 pandemic. Spain’s borders stay closed
NO ENTRY: Travel ban extended. THE country has announced that it is extending a travel ban to all nonessential visitors through to June 15, which matches the European Union policy to do the same. The new government order pushes past the original cut-off date of May 24, and also goes way past the current period of Spain’s State of Alarm emergency mea-
sures. A government source said that “restrictions are likely to remain in place no matter how important tourism is for the Spanish economy.” Only Spanish nationals and non-Spaniards with official residencia documents that prove Spain is where they live are allowed in via flights, sea journeys and land border

Land borders with France and Portugal were closed to most people since the State of Alarm was implemented in midMarch to fight the coronavirus pandemic, pushing the economy to a near stand-still and hitting its key tourist sector hard.

LUFTHANSA group airlines are restarting flights between Ibiza, Mallorca and Valencia and six German and one Swiss city at the beginning of June. The Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss flight offer to Spain will increase from 14 to 61 connections a week between June 1 and 14. It is obligatory to wear face masks on all public transport, confined public spaces, as well as in the streets if the minimum social distance of two metres can’t be maintained. Health Minister Salvador Illa confirmed the new legislation on May 18 as it was an issue that all regional governments had agreed on. However, WHO has acknowledged, along with other health organisations, that face masks can be problematic for some people, for example, those who suffer from anxiety or respiratory conditions. The other concern people have is the potential environmental pollution if face masks are not discarded properly.
Big Flight Fall Alarm measures. The Aena network logged just 141,014 passengers, down by that eye-watering 99.4 per cent compared to April 2019. Freight volumes also fell by 94 per cent last month, in
comparison to the figures from 12 months earlier. Aena declared that its firstquarter net profit plummeted by 83 per cent as a result of the early stages of the coronavirus lockdown.
THE Spanish government has announced that all arrivals at Spanish airports are to have their temperatures checked on arrival. The measure, published in the official bulletin, will last until June 15 but could be extended beyond this date. In a move that severely affects the already beleaguered tourism industry; the new regulation coincides with the extension on the restrictions on non-essential travel for people coming into Spanish territory, which will be in place for another month. It also comes on the same day that the 14-day quarantine for international visitors came into effect in Spain. It is estimated that only a small number of coronavirus infections

gers and flights arriving at airports, delays and staff shortages will not present a problem. The measure has already been in place in Spain’s Canary Islands since the implementation of the State of Alarm on March 14 and so far there have been no problems reported.

Your ITV Explained FOR many residents in Spain, lockdown has happened at an unfortunate time, driving licences and ITVs have expired and exceptions to these expiry dates have been made until now. Under Phase 1, if your ITV has expired you can make a booking at the closest centre. You must arrive with necessary protective gear such as face masks and gloves, as well as ensuring you have a pre-booked appointment. The government has given individuals a 30-day extension to their ITV if it expired during lockdown, as well as an additional 15-day grace period for each week that has passed in quarantine. Therefore, to work out how long before you must renew your ITV simply add 30 days to the

Political Viewpoint from Spain by DAMON MITCHELL THE Covid-19 crisis is causing a major distancing between Spanish society and its political representatives. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez had intended to push Congress for a 30-day extension of the State of Alarm to ‘cover until the end of the de-escalation.’ However, Sánchez has not received the back up he had hoped for and has had to settle for another 15 days, which is the period for which the State of Alarm has been extended since it was decreed on March 14. Sánchez explained that, since it is a “completely different phase,” it will have modifications towards the “institutional de-escalation.” For this, he was negotiating with the Catalonia and Basque parties for their votes of agreement, but has been

making a gesture in hope of future backing when it comes to revisiting discussions on their independence. On the other hand, in the
battle for Madrid, Sanchez is also negotiating with Ciudadanos who seem to be more interested in a vote of no confidence for the president of Madrid’s au-
tonomous community. Which from Sanchez’ point of view would be a great benefit to him. It’s all about tactics where all try to under mine their opposition. If the parties currently supporting Sanchez back out this could then make way for a vote of no confidence which would then put his position up for re-election. Meanwhile, by extending the State of Alarm further it is forcing the people on the street or the common man to seek support from social aid and charities just to be able to have basic necessities. Spain’s electorate seems to have little memory of this and the political parties know this therefore they could push for general elections and once all the important positions have been negotiated just another reboot.

Not enough plastic
EVEN though there are some indus tries that have benefited from the Covid19 pandemic such as suppli ers of plastic sheets for safety screens, even they are suffering. According to the British Plastics Federation, some firms aren’t likely to be able to supply the necessary acrylics until the end of July and as more shops and offices open, so the demand just keeps increasing. As organisations like Uber and mini cab firms are now trialling the addition of screens in their cars, the supply situation can only get worse.

Spanish car industry facing problems IT would appear that one of the first major losses of industrial pro duction in Spain will come in the vehicle production industry. Japanese newspaper Nikkei sug gests that when it reveals its latest results on May 28, Nissan will an nounce the closure of its lossmak ing factory in Barcelona and the transfer of production to France. Last year the Spanish arm pro duced some 55,000 commercial ve hicles and small lorries but has been working to only a small per centage of capacity for some time. Concurrent to this, the French
By John Smith Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire has called for French automobile manufacturers to repatriate production back to France if they want to receive fi nancial support from the govern ment. Two of Europe’s largest car man ufacturers are PSA (Citroen and Peugeot) and Renault which is 15 per cent owned by the French gov ernment. Citroen, Opel, Peugeot and Re nault vehicles are currently manu factured in Spain and in 2019, near
ly 1.5 million vehicles were pro duced for the French companies by their Spanish plants, making the country the second largest manu facturer in Europe after Germany and the eighth largest in the world. It would be uneconomic to move some of the production from Spain to France if no French factory has the tooling available to take over the work, but with France looking to move into an allelectric vehicle scenario by 2030, any production for new models is more likely to take place in France than see new plant for Spain.
LEGALLY SPEAKING Can they block use of pool? In our community we have several different forms of action against the nonpayers of community fees, such as not allowing them to vote at the AGM. My questions are: 1. Is it legal to disable the electronic key to the pool and garden area for nonpaying owners? 2. If not, can it be made legal by adding a rule to the statutes in the Property Registry? 3. Will the Property Registry reject the addition of rules in conflict with Spanish law? E O (Costa Blanca)
DAVID SEARL
The short answers to YOU AND THE LAW your questions are: IN SPAIN 1. No, it is not ‘legal’ to block access to the swimming pool for nonpayers. 2. Yes, it can be made ‘legal’ by amending the original statutes of the community to include the prohibition of pool access. 3. No, the Property Registry will not reject the amendment. All of the above depends on court decisions and not laws. This is why I put ‘legal’ between quotation marks. One court has ruled that pool access can be prohibited if it is written in the statutes. And, yes, you can amend your statutes by a unanimous vote. This is highly unlikely.

As is becoming more common with large loans, a condition was that it should be substantially guaranteed by the Official Credit Institute (ICO) which is an arm of Spain’s government and it has ac cepted a 70 per cent risk. The loan is due to be repaid the end of October 2021 by which time the company expects busi ness to return to normal.

Spanish hotels must change MANUEL VEGAS, President of the Spanish Association of Hotel Directors (AEDH) predicts that as hotels try to return to normal once allowed to reopen, there will have to be some major changes in the way they operate. Firstly, the concept of a breakfast buffet will have to disappear as it would be impossible to observe so cial distancing and the oldfash ioned continental breakfast will make a return with many travellers deciding to eat in their rooms. Generally, food will become less

Keeping Euribor low IT is estimated that in Spain around 30 per cent of properties have been purchased using a mortgage and that more than half of borrowers do not have a fixed rate
of interest. Nowadays it is considered that the most sensible rate is linked to the Euribor (the rate at which banks in the euro zone lend to each other).
The European Central Bank is currently fighting to try to keep rates as low as possible for the benefit of commercial and private borrowers.
‘fussy’ with fewer fusion foods which require a lot of preparation and more staple foods. Next to change will be reception and wherever possible and afford able, he expects to see online regis tration and digital keys on mobile phones to allow access to rooms. Cleaning will be another area which will have to be changed, with rooms disinfected and bed linen supplied in individual packaging rather than ‘en masse’ by laundries. Hoteliers are used to adapting rapidly to change and as more is known about the virus then they will be able to determine the best way to offer a safe environment to guests. The main problem however could be working out how to balance the overall service so that it appeals to holidaymakers and business visitors without appearing to be too harsh or restrictive. Before any of this can happen however, hotels need to reopen and see guests arriving, not just from Spain but from all of the world.

Laura Rippin, Almeria “I would like to nominate Laura Rippin from Cantoria. She has a full-time commitment to her three lovely children, whom she is homeschooling, along with helping an elderly gentleman who is really poorly and helping those in the community who are unable to go shopping owing to the risk of the contagion. She has also, for the past two years, been the main organiser of the Make
a Wish Foundation charity event in Cantoria (sadly this year’s event is unlikely to go ahead). A recent example of her good nature is when a lady fell at home and was in fear of going to the medical centre owing to the contagion, so Laura went to her house to clean up the wound and reassure her.” - Kerrie Weir

Fredericko Sparkle Anthony Brome and Miguel Anthony Brome, Costa Blanca South “I nominate Fredericko Sparkle Anthony Brome and Miguel Anthony Brome for their La Florida Friends Food Bank initiative. They have been amazing in what they have achieved in such a short space of time. Now a lot of needy people, of all different nationalities in the area, are no longer going hungry because of the food parcels being collected and in turn distributed by Fred and Mick. Mick and Fred made a plea for help to our community through their La Florida Friends Food Bank Initiative and the fantastic people in La Florida and surrounding areas were only too glad to donate to help their fellow neighbours. Fred and Mick do so much for other local charities too so it’s only right that they should receive a reward for their commitment to helping others even when they were in need themselves.” - Marie McGorman
day in the Camposol and surrounding community during lockdown. Her mixture of humour, motivation and professionalism during and after her sessions has enabled us to stay motivated, connected with each other and to maintain our physical and mental health. Sara has been an inspiration to us all for her selflessness in ensuring she is there every day for no reward other than to keep us all fit and healthy. She has a big personality and heart which deserves to be rewarded.” - Fiona O’Brien
EURO WEEKLY NEWS is appealing to our loyal readers to help identify your ‘Community Hero.’ After our article which highlighted some of your favourite nominations in the latest issue of our papers we have been inundated with even more of your suggestions as to who you think has gone above and beyond for others during this health crisis. So, who has helped your local community the most during this uncertain isolation period? Who do you think deserves something back, to be rewarded for their selfless actions? It may be someone who has delivered food to those in need, kept everybody informed of the constantly changing information or made others happy with their good deeds. If somebody has done something special for you during this health crisis maybe this is the time for you to pay it forward. If a certain person deserves a good pampering and to be made special, please get in touch.
Anthony Horadada, Costa Blanca South “I would like to nominate Anthony Horadada and his Facebook page, Ant’s Fat Fighters exercise workouts. Anthony has tirelessly kept his Facebook friends entertained throughout the Spanish lockdown. He has maintained his online conversations all day every day with information from
the Spanish government translated and informative, including his exercise live videos, card/bingo games, guessing the song games, and general chit chat. This was also in addition to delivering food to the community and helping the local businesses and much more.” - Lorraine Whatling
Vicki McLeod, Mallorca “I’d like to nominate Vicki McLeod for the award. She’s organised so many excellent things and really kept people busy during tough times. There are some people who are profiteering out of this and she is definitely not one of those. She’s a good egg and does it out of the goodness of her heart! Well done Vicki!” - Anita Vince “My vote goes to Vicki McLeod in Mallorca for creating the Facebook page ‘Majorca, Mallorca at
Home Together.’ It has brought joy and togetherness to our community here in Mallorca, as well as giving our local businesses a great platform to be known, and hope for the future, through a very tough time for them. Vicki not only created it but organised loads to help people through this time. I don’t know how, but it’s the one group that has no negative comments - it’s been a lovely positive place to go to. Vicki deserves the recognition.” - Karen Gomes

Joyce Gyimah, Costa del Sol “I would like to nominate Joyce Gyimah as a local hero. Joyce is the founder of the organisation Adintre which is now in charge together with Fuengirola Town Hall to take care of the homeless people during this Corona lockdown. Without her perseverance, the premises to do all this would not have existed! I have worked with Joyce cooking food for the homeless in the organisation Adintre in the past and helped out where I could. She started the foundation on her own and we used to cook in her home kitchen before she was able to find the premises near the feria ground and Fuengirola TV and radio station. Adintre had loads and

“My name is Phill Fryer (aka Phill Amaani) and I’ve just turned 70 years young this year. I live alone in a remote farmhouse seven kilometres from the nearest village (Ventorros de San Jose) in the Granada Province. Sadly, I was diagnosed with COPD three years ago and have started to suffer the effects which restrict my stamina and mobility so, I would like to nominate a lady called Katy Pilditch who lives about one kilometre away who has been getting me my shopping needs during this awful virus pandemic.” - Phill Fryer
“I would like to nominate Jacqui Ross from Last Chance Animal Rescue for working tirelessly through this pandemic situation.
She has been taking in all the sick animals on a very limited budget. She really could do with this and I know it would be put to good use.” - Andrea Brown.
Kay Frances, Almeria “Kay started a Facebook page for women at the start of the lockdown as a platform to express feelings and frustrations. The page ‘Kaye Frances Ladies Only Sturdygirlsrus’ has grown to 690 members and has been an incredible success. I am amazed by how much information has been shared and indeed helped some quite desperate people not knowing which way to turn.
loads of problems when getting the premises to cook in and also to create a haven for the homeless people to get a haircut/shower or just to socialise. The premises were renovated finally thanks to the strength and vision of Joyce to push it through despite all the problems on the way. She is a star and definitely deserves something back after everything she has been giving for years and especially at this time of crisis!” - Carita Brownless

The situation has given an opportunity for the female group members to air opinions and assists others greatly. I think a lot of comforts have been extended throughout the group. Online meetings have been successfully organised - bringing a lot of females together and made them feel there is a great support group.” - Jenny Trask
Mandy Quinn, Costa del Sol “I would like to vote for Mandy Quinn to receive the community hero award... she has worked tirelessly for collective calling helping the less fortunate cooking until the early hours, delivering food, coordinating all donations and she has been an absolute hero during this terrible time! She might not wear a cape but She is a hero!” - Michelle Daniels
“I’d love to nominate Mandy Quinn. She has selflessly volunteered herself to multiple charities and is helping support over 100 families with supplies during Covid-19. She is up early in the mor ning and goes to bed late at night as she does not rest until everyone that has reached out to her has been helped! She is a superstar!” - Frankie Payas

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT NUMBERS seem to be at the top of the priority list among the politicians and media these days. Numbers of deaths here, numbers of cases there, percentages of victims from this area, how the UK numbers compare with other countries. The whole sorry debacle is beginning to resemble some macabre international lottery competition. As I write this, I have a half an eye on SKY news and, lo and behold, the announcer is giving out more numbers, namely the number of deaths in care homes. Well of course these particular sums truly are shocking. We are all terribly saddened by the number of elderly patients succumbing to this awful disease. But why are we so surprised at the high death toll among the most vulnerable in our society? After all is this not the whole point? It is a proven fact that those who live in care homes are far less likely to survive this

CARE HOMES: Not all are modernised.
awful virus than others who are younger and more healthy. I have found myself in a quite a few care homes over the years and have been surprised (or not!) that the homes depict-
ed on the media always seem to show highly efficient modern units, all computerised, with pristine environments and facilities, run by highly efficient and articulate staff. ‘The only reason for
the high rate of deaths in these establishments,’ spout many of those desperately striving to gain political points, ‘is the government’s failure to provide enough PPE equipment.’ But it’s not the only reason is it? Having experienced the heartbreak of two beloved parents, who finally had to be moved to care homes, I can assure you that they are not all as wonderful as the media would like us to believe. There are thousands of these lucrative private care homes scattered throughout the country, and quite a number that I have experienced are a positive disgrace. While vainly searching for somewhere to place my dear Dad and later my Mum, I was appalled by the conditions in a whole host of these places. Many of them stank of urine. I saw others that were grubby and badly run by completely incompetent staff. Not a few
were run by immigrants, mainly from Pakistan, who, after taking advantage of government schemes to buy large houses, had brought all their relatives over to live in half of the house, while the ‘residents’ lived in the other half and were often tended by some of these relatives who had no qualifications whatsoever. The speed that this virus could have run rampant through these poorly run establishments doesn’t bear thinking about PPE equipment or not. No I truly am fed up with the way the media tries to twist the news to suit their political leanings or merely to pick up ratings by the promotion of sensationalism. Ah well. Go safe everyone. This too will pass. Don’t forget to tune in to EXPATRADIO.UK Mon, Wed, Fri 1pm till 4pm. Hopefully it will cheer some of you up. Keep the faith. Love Leapy

MEMORY BOX GAVIN LAMBE-MURPHY WHEN I moved to Marbella last April, I travelled light. Extremely, light. I have been known to require a separate car for my luggage, on many occasions. However, the move to Spain was one I was unsure of, so my full wardrobe didn’t arrive with me. The idea to make Spain my base, was met with uncertainty over whether it would suit. Meanwhile, life remained busy with social engagements, so I used the stores of Puerto Banus to fill in the gaps. After long deliberations over Marbella being the right place, my wardrobe and other deliveries arrived in December, but had yet to be opened and arranged. As it rained, I opened the third box, of 11, and out fell old photographs, and press cuttings. I had to make a gin and tonic. Sitting on my hall floor, surrounded by chaos, I was transported back in time. My mind racing, as I rummaged deeper in the treasure chest. In fairness, the majority of the photos remain a mystery, as my old life was filled with memory loss, rather than memories. Most were taken at parties, or fashion shows. Funnily, some were of me on the catwalk. I remember one night being asked to walk in a show, alongside my dear friend, the late, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson. I arrived pretty drunk, following a long lunch, to find that Tara had cheekily missed her flight. Told I would have to walk out solo, I froze. A room packed with guests and media, I felt self-aware. I felt wasted. Somehow, the team dressed me and sent me out onto a runway that seemed to go on forever. I stood, dressed in Gucci, legs operating like jelly, and stared out into the darkness. All I could see was the long road ahead. To the sound of Chic, I Want Your love, I strutted, well, more likely stumbled along. Arriving at the end of the catwalk, I posed for photographers for longer than required. I think I was just relieved to have made it, without falling over. Turning, I bumped straight into the next model, knocking the poor girl off her Fendi heels. Everyone laughed, I died a little, immediately sobered up and we kept going. In life when we mess up, we have to keep going. What’s the alternative?
CAT WALK: Strutting my stuff. And that’s what we have to do right now - keep going. Writing this, on day 63 of lockdown, I feel confused. With still so much ‘normality’ to return, when and how, will it happen? Who knows, we simply must wake each day, and continue. While many things feel surreal, still so many people are hoping for a well-earned holiday. Rather than live in limbo, perhaps it’s time to consider spending our chill time closer to home. Possibly, because I live in one of Europe’s busiest tourist destinations, I receive many messages from people, asking if Marbella will reopen and be ready for their planned July visit. Will the airports be operating? Listen, I have absolutely no idea. All I will say, is if this is something that’s seriously troubling you, perhaps consider a new plan. In the same way that I may not be able to travel to Italy, France or Ireland, you may not be able to come here. So, I am looking at the option to spend the summer between Marbella and Ibiza. My family spent a lot of time on Isla Blanca in the late 70’s, and this year I imagine it will be a similar vibe. A chilled, relaxed island, rather than a hedonistic party paradise. For me, the updates regarding air travel and border openings feel a little confusing and unsure, so why waste time living in hope? Look at options that are achievable and book them. As I began to open box number four, I realised, that real memories, even when most are a blur, are the best thing we have. This is a good time to sit, think, laugh, and at the end of the day, be grateful. As we’ll be free to make new memories soon.

FREEDOM FIGHTER DEAR Euro Weekly News, Please don’t take away my one hour in the evening for exercise! I am in remission from lung cancer, and very vulnerable, and the 7-8pm hour to take a walk safely and get some fresh air is a saviour for me, after nearly eight weeks of not leaving the house at all, I do enjoy my evening walk, knowing there will not be 100s of people out walking and putting my health at risk! At 8pm when I make my way home there are literally 100s of people and lunatics racing past on bikes, and not adhering to social distancing rules, and it would be very unsafe for me to walk amongst all these people. I may be over 70, but one hour in the evening to walk is not too much to ask, surely? I am over 70, but just as important as every other member of society! And I wait all day for 7pm to come, so I can go out for some fresh air. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE AWAY THE LITTLE BIT OF FREEDOM YOU HAVE GIVEN ME!!!!!! Normal people have a choice of eight hours in which to take their exercise, children have a choice of seven hours, and over 70’s have a choice of just
OUR VIEW Soft touch DESPITE becoming the worst-hit country in Europe, Boris Johnson seems to be enjoying the peak of his popularity curve. Italy and the UK are the two European nations most badly affected by Covid-19. Italians, who constitute a sizeable community in the UK, are heartbroken that the British people are suffering the same fate as their home country. Some have taken to social media to chastise the ‘reluctance’ and ‘naivety’ of the PM when it came to containing the pandemic, despite having watched the Covid-19 hell unfold in Italy. When a lockdown was eventually enforced in the UK, many Italians couldn’t understand why people in Britain were allowed to jog, go for a walk or simply leave home without showing papers to the police. When Britain recently became the country with the worst coronavirus death toll in Europe, many Italians grieved in shock. To others, it was only to be expected given the UK’s relaxed lockdown. Italians are now leaving the UK in droves to go back to their home country, according to the Italian embassy in London. The initially soft Covid-19 approach of the UK government generated a great deal of fear among Italians, and they decided it made more sense to leave. Just like the Brits, Italians are enormously proud of their healthcare system, which, not surprisingly, was mentioned by Johnson as an example of an excellent healthcare system unable to cope with the waves of victims from the pandemic. Of course, every country has made its own mistakes against this invisible enemy. Italy made huge ones. Yet many in Italy are still wondering why the UK didn’t act immediately against the virus after the immense suffering in southern Europe. This has now generated a sort of general scepticism and distrust toward the British authorities among Italian citizens.

COMMENTS FROM FACEBOOK Spain’s Emergency Health Chief Fears Second Coronavirus Wave As Death Toll Rises Just Days After Lockdown Relaxation in Parts of the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca Bernard George Surely the guide is the number of new cases not the number who have died over the previous 24 hours! Those deaths are more likely to have come from people who contracted the virus some time ago. The numbers in ICUs are falling daily! I’m sure we are not out of the wood but reports should be reliable and sensible!

Pleasure in power Dear Euro Weekly News, I hope I am wrong. It is my feeling that Bill Gates knows that this pandemic was just a trial run to see who obeys the lockdown and who didn’t. How long people stayed in their homes before they rebelled. What ages were involved and what types of people? How effective was their control of the media and use of AI to remove videos that were against the status quo? The next pandemic will probably be very soon as they will not want the countries affected to recover economically. It will probably be a mutated version of CV and they will seed it in areas where it will spread the fastest and kill the most people. This time what the virus does not kill, food shortages will. The fact that Bill Gates is already warning us as he did the last time that another pandemic is on the cards it will happen because he will make sure it does. This psychopath takes pleasure in his power to create fear and panic on a greater level than Stalin, Mao and Hitler especially as he will be responsible for its release. But this time the vaccine will magically appear and will be ready with some form of microchip or identity system ready to inject the world population for the coming One World Government. The One World leader the Biblical antichrist. Regards Vivienne Pimm
Happy man Dear Euro Weekly News, Great paper! I would like to say a big thank you to the Hospital Costa del Sol for my urgent cancer operation during the lockdown. Thank you so much to the medical staff and indeed the Spanish NHS. Thank you. Robert Warburton

Spain’s Andalucia estimates beaches in region could open by June 10 ready to kick start tourism on Costa del Sol Beryl Tye There are people living in Spain, that go to the beach, they have got to carry on living as normal as possible with their families that are in Spain, everybody is acting as if the beaches are just for holiday makers. Let’s all be patient, the boarders have got to open one day, and then everybody will be back there again enjoying themselves, but please let’s spare a thought for the thousands of people that won’t be with us any more, please stay safe x
The Costa del Sol in Spain Faces Financial Ruin if the Region Doesn’t Return to Work Soon Sheree Ruiz It’s not just the financial stress it is the psychological stress on many that is a cause for concern. Yes we do need to get businesses back to work, but we also need to face reality that some will go under. The world has changed as we will have a new normal to deal with.
Animal Lovers Rejoice as Government Confirms Upcoming Law to Protect Animals Against Abuse and Abandonment Julie Jones Peel I won’t hold my breath, how about implementing Spain’s animal cruelty laws properly! Hefty fines for abandonment and jail sentences for animal cruelty! Far more revenue in animal cruelty than tourist police vehicle checks/fines!
Police in Madrid ‘Prepared and Ready’ for another night of civil unrest if the Spanish capital does not move into Phase 1 of the lockdown Dario Dumez People are protesting the deaths, ruined economy and above all, lies and corruption. But this fascist government just wants to silence the people. This is how democracy ends.
Spain Extends International Travel Ban to June as Borders Could Stay Closed Even Longer in Fresh Holiday Setback To Ailing Tourist Sector Jo Coote This is a shame particularly as it looks like Italy may accept international travel from the beginning of June. It’s very hard for the tourism sector here to see another country, whose virus profile is very similar to Spain, take a lead. I hope there may be a rethink to assist the economy here progressing. I can understand the reluctance to accept overseas visitors, but the world is currently grinding to a halt. Surely there are measures that can be taken to introduce overseas visitors which that can keep the potential health impact to a minimum. We’ve made great progress so far and it would be good to think we could show the world the way and make it a success.

DIONE LOCKYER WITH what is going on in the world right now, everyone seems to have an opinion. Having an opinion about anything is completely natural. It’s a part of life! But ask yourself a question. How is your opinion affecting others? Is your opinion kind? Is your opinion factual? Does your opinion need to be shared? Does your opinion spread love or fear? Everyone in the world has feelings. You can never take a feeling away from others but you can respect it. You can also respect other people’s opinions but you do not have to let it run your life or assist you in making or changing your decisions. Seven years ago, I told friends and family that we

Some supported our decisions, others didn’t! We were told we were crazy, we were told we would be back within a year, we were told it wouldn’t work. These were people’s opinions. Their opinions were generated from their own fear. If we had listened to those opinions, there is a strong case that we would still to this day, be plodding along and existing. Our children would never have experienced a different culture and lear ned a new language at such a young age. We knew these people cared for us, but we knew what WE wanted to do. We

People will have an opinion, no matter what you say or do. People will judge no matter what decisions you make in life. People will react to your decisions through their own experiences, thoughts and feelings, but that doesn’t make it right for you. TIME OUT Cartoon by Audrey Quinton www.audreyq.co.uk
YOUR STARS FOR NEXT 7 DAYS ARIES (March 21 - April 20) Hassles and battles are on the cards. If things don’t happen as fast as you’d expected, or domestic and workaday blips assail your patience, transform them into an opportunity to show your special qualities. Potent planetary influences urge you to look, listen, learn and refuse to allow petty stumbling blocks to undermine your confidence on Tuesday and Thursday.
TAURUS (April 21 - May 21) Astrologically, it’s not unreasonable to assume that when sparky Mars and the zesty Sun conflict with restless Pluto, life could become a tad frustrating. You might find it hard to tolerate hypocrisy and setbacks, but fortunately, it’s all just a passing cloud. Regardless of any lack of continuity, concentrate on keeping going and prepare for next week’s brighter outlook.
GEMINI (May 22 - June 21) Punchy Mars and the heady Sun are set for a scramble with touchy Pluto. You’ve been there before, so despite any administrative bumps, gossipy whirls or curious rejections, don’t be too sensitive. Add up what you’ve achieved, subtract your fears and keep your emotions under control.
CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Upfront Mars and the upbeat Sun will be at loggerheads with powerful Pluto. You might not appreciate some of Friday or Saturday’s antics, so be ready to use your charm, or perhaps your equally wicked sense of humour will do the trick.
LEO (July 24 - August 23) This is an intense week, and if you get stuck with a particular issue, jumble your words, or just can’t seem to do anything right, it might be worth finding out if the grass is greener on the other side.
VIRGO (August 24 - September 23) Quirky planetary niggles will surface without warning. A variety of talks, news and lastminute changes surround your family members, friends or colleagues. No matter what affects your personal or occupational activities, stay focused, decide what your goals are and, just as importantly, find the easiest way to move forward without losing your healing sense of humour.
LIBRA (September 24 - October 23) Even the best-made plans can suddenly sink without a trace. Your dreams for a fresh start in one particular direction still need tender, cautious care, and you may equally need to be wary of overstepping the mark where money’s concerned.
SCORPIO (October 24 - November 22) You will need bucketloads of humour and understanding as impatient Mars and the sprightly Sun engage with touchy Pluto. Stay well clear if you want to escape potential power struggles.
SAGITTARIUS (November 23 - December 21) If you suspect that some things are not what they seem, you could be right. Repel doubts, ban anxieties and stick to facts and tact. If certain individuals or situations continue to conspire against you, change course and do something entirely different. What goes around will come around quicker than you think.
CAPRICORN (December 22 - January 20) Storms in tea-cups need loads of sweet-talking. Of course, if you can’t be bothered with it all, fair enough; keeping quiet could be the best way to deal with problems, glitches or sudden backfires. If you can’t take a break, at least chill out with whatever or whoever brings you the greatest pleasure.
AQUARIUS (January 21 - February 19) You are about to tackle some tough tests. Work and personal hurdles could preoccupy you, but after the weekend you’ll be able to sort out the ice from the cream. No matter how awkward things seem on Monday or Wednesday, trust your ability to wait for the right moment, rather than risk spoiling your plans.
PISCES (February 20 - March 20) Feisty Mars and the fiery Sun are warring with changeable Pluto, so avoid any tearaway temptations on Thursday or Friday. You could be emotionally vulnerable, or even lulled into a false sense of security. However confusing the planets may seem, even out the odds as best you can by ensuring your worries take second place.

Why some people reach out and others isolate MS BIPOLAR UP AND DOWN WITH BALANCE UNEDITED
WHEN you’re feeling down in the dumps, chances are you’ll respond one of two ways. Yo u might hide away at home not wanting to speak to anyone. Or you may reach out to friends, unloading your worries on to them. Neither approach is wrong! Whichever way you go, it may be difficult to understand those who act differently than you do when they’re feeling fragile. Here’s why you might be inclined to reach out or hideaway. Reaching Out When a thousand worries weigh on your brain, sometimes the only way to relieve pressure is by letting off steam. Per haps you invite your bestie over for a takeaway, a sad movie, and a long cry. Or maybe you rant, unloading all of your worries on your mum. You might even type a long email to a trusted friend, laying bare all your worries. Talking through your fragile feelings with a trusted friend or loved one works much like talk therapy, discussing your anxieties helps you sort out your true feelings. But letting off too much steam isn’t healthy, either. If your venting comes out as rage, or you’re thinking obsessively over an idea or choice, your health may be at risk so make sure your venting remains constructive. How to help someone who reaches out If your friend is going through a difficult time, offer a shoulder to cry on and an ear to listen. Ignore the
temptation to offer advice - now isn’t the time for multitasking with some Candy Crush or Facebook. But if you suspect their troubles run deeper, encourage them to seek professional help, speak to a doctor. Hiding away Hiding out under the covers can seem like the only option when you’re feeling sad. Besides, every time you step out into society, it feels like taking a risk. Will you cry in public? Will you say yet another stupid thing that worsens your bad mood? In certain situations, wallowing is acceptable - give yourself time to heal after something bad happens. There’s no shame in an extended break from the big scary world. The more you fold in on yourself, the more difficult it becomes to reach out for help from a friend or a therapist. How to help someone that just wants to hide away If you’re worried about a f r i e n d who has dropped off the face of the p l a n e t , tread carefully. Not everyone is receptive to a suggestion that might be dealing with a condition like depression. Waiting for them to reach out may be the best strategy. But if you haven’t heard from them in a while, consider sending a message. Let them know you care and want to talk to them. Don’t push the issue, but leave an opening for further communication. Once they’re ready, they’ll reach out. I would love to hear your stories, email me or follow me on my Facebook page @mswillowbipolar Love Ms Bipolar x

Colour coded
A BALANCED diet should not only follow the patterns of the nutritional pyramid but also take into account the colours of the foods that each meal includes. What properties does food have according to its colour? Reds and purples: Foods such as strawberry, pomegranate and red pepper are a source of vitamin C, magnesium and phytochemicals such as lycopene or anthocyanins. Foods of these colours are beneficial in caring for the heart, urinary tract, and maintaining a good memory. Green: It is the most common colour. Lettuce, celery, broccoli, green apples and kiwis,
provide lutein, a very important antioxidant along with calcium, magnesium, fibre and vitamins K and C. This type of food helps relieve anxiety as well as maintain strong and healthy bones. Orange and yellow: These lead to youth, vitality and good mood and include citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges and grapefruits which are rich in vitamins A and C. They also
contain folic acid, magnesium, fibre and potassium and strengthen the immune system.

INTERNATIONAL to read more visit www.euroweeklynews.com Diplomatic Row Italexit AMERICAN diplomats are reportedly furious on the news that Interpol has issued an international arrest warrant for ex-US diplomat’s wife Anne Sacoolas, the alleged killer of teenager Harry Dunn. Washington officials were “furious” to learn UK police had put an international wanted notice out for Anne Sacoolas, the American woman charged over 19-year-old Harry’s death last year, the Mail on Sunday reports.
WANTED: American woman charged with Harry Dunn’s death. Harry Dunn was killed when his motorbike collided with a
car outside a US military base in Northamptonshire on August 27
last year. Anne Sacoolas, 42, the wife of a US intelligence official based at RAF Croughton, claimed diplomatic immunity after the crash and was able to return to her home country. She was charged with causing death by dangerous driving in December, but an extradition request submitted by the Home Office was rejected by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in January, a decision the State Department has since described as “final.”
No Deal Brexit revisited BOTH the British and European Union negotiators have indicated that they are nearing stalemate with regards to Brexit as they cannot at this stage agree terms on Fishing Rights and what is known as the ‘level playing field’ with regards to
commercial competition. Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Michael Gove who is head of the no-deal planning committee in government told Sky News that there were sticking points but he believed that a deal could be done provided
the EU compromised. According to the Mail on Sunday, if no compromise is reached at the next meeting between the two sides at the end of May, then the indications were that Britain would simply walk away and leave without a deal.

ITALIANS angry over the lack of help from the EU during the Coronavirus Crisis are demanding a vote to leave the block. Italy was the first country in Europe to be placed on strict lockdown as it struggled to cope with the spread of Covid19. Its European neighbours largely looked on and did nothing to help relieve the burden. Months later as the lockdown is slowly lifted and Italians begin to tentatively venture out, there is growing concern over the economic impact of the crisis. The discontent among Italians has given way to rising support for the idea of an independent Italy outside of the EU. A survey of 1,000 Italians carried out in April by Tecne showed 42 per cent would like to see their country break ties with Brussels. This marked a jump from 26 per cent in November 2018.
