WELL, it sounds easy; if you break it down you get Mar (sea) and Bella (beautiful), and local schoolchildren are often told that the Catholic monarchs, Fernando and Isabel, once visited the area and commented on how beautiful the sea was, hence the name. Unfortunately, the story is not true. The true origin is not known either; Marbella Council suggests that it comes from Pre-Roman times and the words Maar (a lot of water) and Billa (mountain). Some historians suggest the Carthaginians called the area Maharbal, to honour the captain who rebuilt and extended the city. The Romans may have called it Barbesula or Salduba and the Arabs called it Elma Belar meaning Shiny Water, or possibly Marbulla, Marbilia or more likely Marbil-la, meaning Calm Water. It seems clear there is some link to the name with water and the mystery of how Marbella got its name is, in itself, somewhat enchanting.
Marbella has much to offer.

Marbella with kids
IF you’re wondering if there is anything in Marbella specifically aimed at children, here are a few ideas. Marbella has plenty of parks for children to play in, as well as use bikes and scooters, but there is one play park out in the forest, in the Nagüeles area, which is ideal for smaller children and is also surrounded by picnic tables and exercise equipment for adults. Speaking of forests, a firm favourite with kids is Aventura Amazonia, for children aged from four up, a tree-top adventure park with zip wires, rope bridges, climbing and much more. With the numerous companies located in Marbella you’ll have no trouble finding things to do, from buggies and segways to catamarans and horseriding, there are activities for all tastes.

Historic city centre THE Casa del Corregidor is an impressive building with Arab style construction which belonged to the Royal representative in the area and is a clear example of 16th century architecture. Also in the city centre is the Hospital Real de la Misericordia, formerly known as San Juan de Dios Hospital and founded by the Catholic Monarchs. In the same area they found the chapel of the same name, part of which was only discovered in the 20th century. There was a small group of rich landowners and a large number of poor workers and hardly any middle class. In 1918, the first hotel, the Comercial, was opened, but the S p a n i s h C i v i l Wa r took its toll on the area, with many churches and other buildings burned down. After the war ended and in the following decade Marbella was reborn from the ashes and in the fifties began to attract tourism.

ALMOST all that remains in Marbella from the times when the area was under Arab rule is the castle and its walls. The castle, made up of two areas, is located in the historical centre of Marbella. be seen in the city in some places. Marbella was recovered by the Catholic rule in June 1485 and from then until 1942, the castle was used as a fortress to control the area. Even after the wars ended, it was still used for surveillance of the coast. In 1735 a project for its restoration was elaborated.
Medieval Marbella
UNDER Islamic rule, the city walls, watch towers and a castle were built, as well as the mosque. Marbil-la would have been a maze of narrow streets and numerous buildings with large courtyards. The population would have mainly been dedicated to farming the landing surrounding what is now the historical centre. It was disputed by the kingdoms of Algeciras and Malaga, being won by the latter before coming under the rule of the Nasrid Kingdom, perpetuated in 1286 with the signing of the Treaty of Marbella. During the War of Granada, it was taken over peacefully by Catholic Kingdom of Castilla in 1485 and named a city, as well as the capital of the area. The famous Orange Square is built around that era. Estepona split from Marbella in 1729 and Ojen in 1807.

Celebrated for being a caring, nurturing environment that brings the very best out of every student. The experienced, hand-picked teachers take enormous pride in ensuring the development and happiness of each student regardless of their starting point. The school’s motto really is the perfect explanation for the atmosphere you feel upon entering the school, ‘Education, Empowerment, Enjoyment.’ International School Estepona follows the national British curriculum and a daily Spanish lesson. They strive to make each lesson memorable and fun. Their goal is to make each child excited about school and learning! The children are in class ‘bubbles.’ has a huge advantage when dealing with the current situations such as social distancing and hygiene measures. The school has always limited class numbers to a maximum of 15 children.
This enables social distancing at all times even within the classrooms. The bright, open classrooms allow for plenty of space and air flow to keep the classrooms fresh and safe. The children
are all in class ‘bubbles’ which allows for extra safety and for the school to monitor contact carefully. Upon entering the school, the children are proudly greeted by a friendly class teacher who checks their temperature. The children enter through three different entrances to ensure that ‘bubbles’ do not have contact. There is also a new cleaning regime that is followed by all staff members throughout the day, to ensure that all rooms and equipment are kept disinfected at all times. Each member of International School Estepona’s community follows a handwashing protocol, which is made fun by song and instils a sense of importance in personal hygiene. The school also has new ozone generators installed which remove any air pollutants overnight and ensures each student and staff member enters the school with clean, fresh air! With all the new safety measures International School Estepona never forgets the importance of what is under each mask, a smile from every student!

King Fahd’s oppulence WHEN its popularity began to rise, Marbella became a favourite destination amongst the Arab royalty. Until his death, King Fahd of Saudi Arabia spent time every summer in Marbella with a following of thousands of people at his palace, complete with its own mosque, helipad, hospital and nine small palaces surrounding the main building. In 1999 alone, he reportedly spent more than €90 million in Marbella and year after year, there were reports of local businesses running out of stock just so they could provide for the palace, entire department stores being closed so he and his family could do their shopping, his entourage filling five-star hotels, and salaries of up to €3,000 for the most menial of temporary jobs working to prepare for their stay.
Roman baths ALSO in the Guadalmina area you will find another impressive historical site. Dating from the second century, there is a building which housed the Roman baths. You can still see a central area and seven large rooms with high vaulted ceilings surrounding it. It is a complex structure, which historians believe was created with the aim of making something unique and surprising to reflect the power of whoever ordered the work. The building has stood up well to the passage of time and visitors can still admire the octagonal structure and the niches where the powerful citizens of ancient Roman times would have sat. Free entry. Guided tours on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 9am to 11am.
The Khashoggi era of riches
IMPRESSIVE: And is a complex structure.
Famous residents ANTONIO BANDERAS and Julio Iglesias are just two of the many celebrities who chose to reside in Marbella. Many famous faces have been seen visiting Marbella over the past 50 years and more, and more than just a few of them have fallen in love with the area and ended up settling here. Sean Connery was one of
them, with the controversial Villa Malibu, built right on the sea front. Simon Cowell bought a villa in Sierra Blanca and Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic also bought himself a €10 million mansion in the same area. Vladimir Putin also decided to buy himself a ‘modest’ mansion as a second home in La Zagaleta in 2012, which
reportedly put him back just €15 million. Prince fell in love with Marbella after a concert and bought himself a mansion worth more than €5 million in Paraiso Hills. Cristiano Ronaldo spends a considerable amount of time on the Costa del Sol and has businesses in Marbella as well as a home in Estepona.
THIS attraction is nothing new, one of the richest men in the world in the 1980s, Dodi Al-Fayed’s arms dealer uncle Adnan Khashoggi also had a mansion in Marbella called Baraka, one of the largest estates in the area, bought off Cristina Onassis, and his yacht Nabila was to be found in Puerto Banus every summer. At the mansion, he and his wife hosted lavish parties with stars of films and music as well as politicians from far and wide. He was said to spend €1 million per week in Marbella in his heyday. Another rich and famous Arab with ties to Marbella and a friend of Khashoggi was Saudi businessman Mohamed Ashmawy, who has a Boulevard named after him in the city and had a home on the Golden Mile. He was a big fan of luxury vehicles and gave more than just a few to his friends in Marbella.

business. Languages were a priority even before she arrived in cosmopolitan Marbella, and as she says, “you would not get very far here talking Hungarian.” She speaks seven languages. Following on with the conversation Kristina advised me that she started this business as there was not much else to do in those days, one could either be an estate agent, a travel agent or a hotelier and as she loves meeting people, it was a natural progression. People started asking her at a social level if she knew anyone to buy their house or of any houses they could buy and it grew from there. Today Kristina is a high profile local celebrity often seen networking after hours at the best parties, invariably in a stunning gown and even a quiet lunch resembles a royal progress with many friends coming over to say hello. Few people in Marbella do not know this famous lady of the real estate world. Kristina Szekely’s name is synonymous with the luxury real estate. The quality of life here has been much improved for everyone and many interesting opportunities are happening and new horizons are out there. Marbella has a way of life and more and more people are coming back after living in other parts of the world stating that Marbella definitely is the best place in the world to live. Helping foreign nationals MARBELLA has a very active Foreign Nationals Department, led by Councillor Remedios Bocanegra. Euro Weekly News spoke to the councillor about settling in Marbella and she clarified that although it may be known for its luxury mansions and top restaurants, Marbella has something to suit any budget. She also explained that plenty of activities are arranged in Marbella focusing on the foreigners who live there, such as talks about administrative matters, including some focused specifically at university age students who are given assistance to register on the padron, access to transport cards and other benefits to help them settle. The councillor also told us that the city hall has simplified the procedures for opening a business in Marbella, doing away with excess red tape and reducing taxes.
A street with history CALLE ANCHA was one of the most important streets in Marbella in the 19th century, as it was where the homes of the rich families were located. It can be entered from Plaza del Puente de Ronda, which was one of the three entrances to the city when it was fortified. Calle Ancha linked the city with the north area where the farms and mills were located. Many of the houses can still be seen, with coats of arms, decorated façades and large balconies. One of them is Casa Correa from 1763. Travelling north on Calle Ancha you will find the Santo Cristo church, built in the 16th century as part as the Franciscan Convent, it is one of the oldest churches in the city. It has just one nave, a large choir and a Tuscan column which descends to the baptismal font.
Marbella’s best known church THE Encarnacion Church is one of many former mosques which in the 16th century were turned into churches, in this case it was probably the largest and most important in the city. The main entrance to the church is Rococo style from the late 18th century. Inside, it has an organ from 1975, the largest built in Spain in the past century. Nearby is the Hospital Bazan, now the Engraving Museum, formerly known as Hospital de la Encarnacion, which is a Renaissance style building and remained open for three centuries. It was founded by Alonso de Bazan who wrote in his testament in 1570 that his properties should be made into hospitals. It was restored in 1989 to become the museum it is today.

As new CEO the Board of Directors appointed Borja GarcíaEgotxeaga (former COO) with the support of Jordi Argemí as new Deputy CEO and CFO (former CFO). Together with the management team, more than 270 top-level professionals form Neinor with the mission of managing the most ambitious residential development

Neinor remains the leading developer in Spain, having delivered 1,300 units in 2019 and achieved a net profit of €64 million. In March 2020, Neinor announced another step towards becoming a complete residential platform: entering the rental market. Seafront pathway IF you enjoy long walks but you don’t fancy heading uphill into the mountains, then the Senda Litoral is for you and there is a beautiful stretch of it going along the Marbella seafront. The Senda Litoral is a pathway which covers 14 towns along the coast of Malaga Province between Manilva and Nerja, and covers a total of 180 kilometres, although in some places it is not complete or is being repaired. In Marbella, there are around several kilometres of pathway which take walkers and cyclists through some superb landscapes such as the Artola sand dunes in Cabopino, past some of the city’s historical landmarks, and now there is even a bird-watching spot at the point where the Rio Verde runs into the sea.
SENDA LITORAL: Walk along the coastline.
Pre and early history REMAINS have been found in Marbella that show it was inhabited from Palaeolithic and Neolithic times and after that, most experts agree that the origin of the current city was a Phoenician settlement, like many of the towns along the coasts of Malaga Province. Unfortunately, no significant remains of buildings have been found, except for in the Rio Real and Cerro Torron sites. There have, however been significant discoveries of remains from the Roman era in what is now the city of Marbella, such as columns in the city walls. There is also proof of Roman settlements by the Verde and Guadalmina rivers, including Las Bovedas baths and the ruins of the Vega de Mar early Christian church, which is surrounded by a Visigoth necropolis which proves that humans continued to inhabit the area after that.

Consistency is the name of the game! FTER a tumultuous year, the Metro Grupo group of hospitality venues on the Costa del Sol have reopened most of their locales. And with great pride, the group has even opened a brand-new Chinese restaurant in Mijas Costa called Mao, located at their Max Beach complex. “Marbella residents have been patient and loyal and we are so appreciative of the support from our customers,” Marketing Director, Karen Wolfson told us. Jacks Smokehouse, Joys Live and Mumtaz Indian, on the front line of Puerto Banus have all reopened. “We encourage local residents to come visit as the port is still beautiful and although not filled with tourists just yet, it is an appealing place to stroll the shops and take in the views.” With its easy parking and central Marbella location, Cibo Italiano has reopened and now is offering delivery via Uber Eats. Laura, Sa’id and Ivette will look after you like it’s your own living room. Bono Beach in Costabella, near Elviria is open for the

summer season. The amazing team there, headed by Fernando and Carolina, welcome our regulars and new guests every day on the beach. Alberts in the cute port of Cabopino will be reopening in the middle of May, with an exciting new chef. Of course, when you speak about Marbella in general terms, we often think about our neighbouring towns of Estepona, Mijas, Fuengirola and Benalmadena. The Max Beach complex in Mijas Costa now offers more, with Max Fitness Gym upstairs which has the best views of any gym in the region; and Max Beach pool and beach beds now available; and the new Chinese restaurant, Mao serving traditional and modern Chinese and Asian fusion cuisine with stunning décor and views. And further east, in Puerto Marina, Benalmadena, you will find Kaleido bar open, with Cantina Mexicana next door, as well as Metro Ristorante Italiano; Gaucho Argentinian Grill and Jacks Smokehouse Puerto Marina.

THE Alameda Park is the green lung of the city of Marbella. Dating back to the 18th century, at one point it took up an area of 20,000m2 and has long been the pride of Marbella. It was originally designed as one main walk with smaller areas on either side, but it has been reformed several times over the years. There were six central round benches and the fountain which still remains in place. A figure of Christ, a cross and other items have been removed from the park, more flowerbeds have been put in place and now the original two walks to the sides have been made into streets.
Foreign associations There are several associations in Marbella run by and aimed at foreigners: Age Concern Marbella: https://ageconcernmarbella.com/ Brexpats in Spain: https://www.facebook.com/groups/brexpatsinspain International Christian Fellowship Marbella: https://internationalchristianfellowshipmarbella.org/ Marbella Global Lions Club: https://e-clubhouse.org/sites/marbellaglobal/ Rotary Club Marbella Guadalmina: https://www.marbella-guadalmina-rotary.club/home U3A International: https://u3a.international/ Royal British Legional Marbella: http://branches.britishlegion.org.uk/branches/marbella Costa Women: https://www.costawomen.com/
Important to register IF you live in Marbella, it’s important to register on the padron (census), here’s why: The number of people registered as residents affects the resources and financial aid that the city receives from the Central Government. The more people there are on the padron, the better for the city and all its residents. There are more than 250,000 people living in Marbella but only 145,000 registered. 1,000 new registrations = one more firefighter 2,400 new registrations = one more rubbish truck 2,500 new registrations = four more police officers Also, Marbella would get: more street sweepers, cleaning equipment and rubbish containers, more police cars and equipment for the police and fire department.
More Arab ties to Marbella ALSO on the famous Golden Mile is the AlRiya palace, belonging to Salman Ibn Abdelaziz, the current monarch of Saudi Arabia since 2015 and King Fahd’s half-brother. He is also known for closing down and emptying the boutiques of Puerto Banus without even stopping to look at a single price ticket. His yacht was often spotted in the marina and he too was a fan of expensive cars which were to be seen zooming through the city streets. Sheikh Abdullah AlThani, the nephew of the Emir of Qatar and owner of Malaga Football Club, has also chosen the city and surrounding area to invest large sums of money, although many of the projects he had planned have not been given the go-ahead.

Industrial heritage Artola sand MARBELLA has a rich industrial heritage and there are many buildings in the city which are proof of this. El Cable - located 300 metres offshore, it is the remaining part of a loading dock built in 1957 from which iron from local
mines was loaded onto ships. Used until 1970. Buenavista Mine - A path leads from Nagueles Park to the old mines from which minerals were extracted for local use and export. La Concepcion iron-
works - Founded in 1826, it was operational until 1884 when the metal industry moved to northern Spain. Cortijo Miraflores - now a cultural centre, oil museum and archaeological museum, it was built in 1706 as a country home and later housed a sugar mill and oil mill. Guadaiza mill - built in 1827 as a sugar mill, it is now a cultural centre. El Prado mill - Created around 1644, it was used as a sugar mill and then as a liqueur and wine factory until the 20th century.
dunes
THE Cabopino area of Marbella is home to a spectacular natural area: the Artola sand dunes. Ideal for a run in the morning, a stroll at sunset or a peaceful day at the beach surrounded by natural beauty, they are a rare sight in such a built-up area. They were declared a natural monument by the Junta de Andalucia in 2001 and cover an area of 19.22 hectares. Plants which grow in the area have adapted to survive the strong sunlight and lack of water as well as the constant wind, and include sea daffodils, juniper bushes and European beachgrass. It has a Roman defence tower, Torre Ladrones, and is close to the nudist beach.
Hike to La Concha IT’S very unlikely, but if you get tired of the beaches of Marbella, the surrounding mountains are ideal for hiking. There is none more famous in the area than La Concha, immediately visible behind Marbella, standing 1,200m above sea level at its peak. From La Concha, on a clear day, you will have spectacular views, not only over Marbella, but all the way along the coast from Fuengirola to Gibraltar and across the sea to the shores of North Africa. Leaving from Refugio del Juanar, it takes about six hours to get to the top. You will get an amazing feel for the Sierra de las Nieves natural park and even if you don’t make it right to the top, the walk is lovely. There are wild orchids in the forests, as well as a wide variety of autochthonous trees.
Charity market ON Sunday, May 16 an event will take place in Puerto Banus harbour at the Muelle de Honor from midday until 6pm to raise funds for Caritas, Debra and Fundatul. The Other ports in the area Golden Mile THE Golden Mile of Marbella is the area from the west of Marbella city centre to Puerto Banus, in total five kilometres. In such a small area, we can find some of the most exclusive and sought after properties in Europe. Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe chose the area as the location for the Marbella Club Hotel which opened in the 1950s and was popular amongst aristocrats, celebrities and wealthy business owners. The area has a long seafront promenade with some of the best beach clubs and restaurants in Marbella, and behind them, luxury villas and apartments on some of the most exclusive complexes and the famous Puente Romano Hotel, which owes its name to the authentic Roman bridge. On the other side of the road there are shopping centres and restaurants galore as well as large villas and mansions which cost millions.
WHILE Puerto Banus is certainly the most famous, it isn’t the only port in Marbella. There is the Marbella Marina, which is popular with locals and has a variety of bars and restaurants. It is near the beach and is used for sailing lessons and competitions, regattas and other events. Known as La Bajadilla, there are two levels, the upper level where the bars and restaurants are located which is used for many events and shows, and the lower level, which has the sailing club
and nautical facilities. As well as this marina, Marbella, formerly a fishing village, still maintains this tradition and has a small fishing port at the same location.
There are other marinas, including Cabopino, on the border between Marbella and Mijas, which has 169 moorings and the Virgen del Carmen marina in Marbella with 377.
MARINA: Has a variety of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Open-air museum THERE are 10 surreal bronze sculptures attributed to Salvador Dali located in the local Avenida del Mar, which links the old town and the seafront. There is some controversy regarding whether or not they are the work of Dali, but despite this, they have become a famous local landmark and whoever made them, they are certainly worth a visit, and are the chosen location for art and cultural events. They were put in place in 1998 and at more than two metres tall and weighing between 200 and 400 kilos each, they are very impressive. There is also a Dali sculpture on a roundabout in Puerto Banus; the Rhinoceros Dressed in Lace was created in 1956, weighs three tonnes and was donated to the local council in 2004 to mark his birth. The Avenida del Mar was part of the Alameda Park and was the place where rich socialites took strolls and showed off their possessions.
