There were craft stalls,a bar, barbecue, bouncy castle and dancing late into the night in the large air­condi tioned hall that was packed with people enjoying the entertainment.“TheFunFest was a mar vellous accomplishment for all the volunteers who pre pared and ran the event,” said Age Support’s presi dent.“More than 200 people attended, raising more than €2,600 from ticket sales, stalls, the bottle bank, raffle, bar and barbecue. After overheads, the money will go to help with the charity’s work in the community. “We will hold this event annually as it was so popu lar, and the atmosphere from 4pm until late was great,” Vanyua said. THE Vuelta a España, one of the most important cycling events in the world, will once again draw international attention to Almeria. The 11th stage of this edition, to be held on Wednesday, August 31, will cover a distance of 191.2 km between Al hama de Murcia and Cabo de Gata. The distance to be covered within Almeria will be 133.7 km and the competitors will pass through some of the province’s best landscapes in places such as Pulpi, Vera, Mojacar, Carboneras and Nijar. The deputy for the Presidency and Tourism of the Provincial Council, Fernando Giménez, said that the strong ties between Alme ria and cycling were due to “our passionate fans of the sport; our excellent climate, landscapes and roads, which allow cycling at any time of year; and our excellent organisational infrastructure, which makes it possible to successfully carry out an event of this magnitude.”

The province’s towns and cities will use this cash from the central government’s State Pact Against Gender Violence for different projects between July 1 and June 30, 2023. Tamsin Brown PEDRO ALMODOVAR is about to start shooting the short film Extraña forma de vida (Strange Way of Life), starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pas cal, in Tabernas. In July, the actors arrived in Madrid and began work ing on the famous director’s first Western, and they have now trav elled to Almeria. The award­winning American ac tor Ethan Hawke was spotted having dinner at Viejo Café de Manila in Almeria City on Friday, August 12. Hawke posed for photos with the es tablishment’s staff, who shared the news of the visit on their social net work and spoke highly of the actor. It is the first time that Hawke, a four­time Oscar nominee (twice as a performer and twice as a screenwrit er), is shooting in Almeria. His costar, Pedro Pascal, will film in Alme ria again four years after shooting Wonder Woman 1984. The film will be shot in Western Leone in the Tabernas Desert. This will be the third time that Almod ovar has filmed in Almeria, having filmed Labyrinth of Passion in 1982 and Talk to Her in 2002.

Al though Almeria was ranked in seventh place, several Cabo de Gata­Nijar national park’s virgin beaches earned a mention, in cluding Playa de los Genoveses, Playa del Monsul, Cala de San Roque and El Playazo de Rodalquilar as well as Las Negras, San Jose, la Isleta del Moro and Agua Amarga. “Here time stands still and it’s possible to practise ‘slow living’,” Vogue declared. Javea’s Portixol in Alicante Province was placed first, followed by Playa de la Concha in San Sebastian (Guipuzcoa). In Cadiz, the fashion magazine placed the Los Alemanes, Bolonia and Valde vaqueros beaches equal third, with Menorca’s Cala Macarelleta occupying the fourth slot. Next came Calella de Palafrugell (Girona) in fifth place, with Ses Illetes in Formentera ranked sixth. Maspalomas in Gran Canaria was ranked eighth and Es Trenc in Mallorca concluded Vogue’s list in ninth place.

The Junta de Andalucia, through the Territori al Delegation of Sustainable Devel opment in Almeria, is processing disciplinary proceedings against the individuals after they were report ed by the Nature Protection Service (Seprona) of the Guardia Civil. Due to the fragility of the famous rock formation, which is located just behind Hotel Los Escullos and offers beautiful views, it is forbid den to climb it. As of August 11, the perpetrators had not yet officially been punished, but it is worth not ing that the current legislation states that any act that damages the geological features of the zone is considered a serious offence and can lead to fines of between €601.02 and €60,101.21.

The easterly wind caused the temperature to rise by more than 4ºC in less than half an hour. This breaks the previous record of 41.6 °C, which was recorded on July 6, 2019. Data available at AEMET, the State Meteorological Agency, re veals that the Almeria Airport weather station has only ex ceeded 41.0 °C on four occa sions, with three of them occur ring in the last decade: 2015, 2019, and 2022.

Tamsin Brown A STORM caused a significant interruption to the train ser vice between Granada and Almeria on Friday, August 12, at around 5pm, reported the public railway company ADIF on its Twitter account (@In foAdif).Itannounced that the ser vice had been interrupted by an accumulation of water on the tracks following a heavy storm between the stations of Hueneja‐Dolar, Granada, and Fiñana, NumerousAlmeria.passengers com plained on social media and shared videos of the affected area. Their journey to Almeria took much longer than sched uled. The train was set to ar rive at the Almeria Inter modal Station at approximately 5.30pm, but this was not possible and the passengers were forced to continue their journey by bus. Earlier in the same week, another train bound for Almeria also suffered a con siderable delay. On Tuesday, August 9, a train that left Madrid at 8am arrived in the capital of Almeria 70 minutes late because a freight train had broken down in the town of Jodar, Jaen.

THE vessel Magic Pluto, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, was recently docked at the Pechina Quay at the Port of Almeria while it was loaded with 72,000 tonnes of gypsum, a mineral composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate that is commonly used to make plaster and drywall. It was one of the largest loads of gyp sum to have been transported from Almeria recently.Thecargo ship set sail from the Port of Alme ria late on August 11 with the destination of Quebec, Canada. In the first half of this year, more than 930,000 tonnes of gypsum have been exported from the Port of Almeria, a vol ume which represents an increase of 14 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Tamsin Brown THE Provincial Council of Almeria’s first training course in the socio­sanitary care of dependent people at social institutions ended on Monday August 8 and was completed by 15 people from the municipalities of Huercal­Overa, Al box, Partaloa, Vera, Macael and Olula del Rio. This course was fully financed by the Provin cial Council and aimed to create more opportu nities for the participants to access the job mar ket by improving their employability. The course took place between January and August of this year and consisted of 370 hours of online training and 80 hours of practical in ternships. The project was a resounding suc cess, as all the participants have been asked to continue working where they carried out their internships.Thedeputy for Economic Promotion and Em ployment, Carmen Navarro, said: “This is a tool that helps us to fight against depopulation. These courses create equal opportunities and ensure that all those people who want to live in a small town have the same opportunities as those who want to live in a capital or larger town.”

ACCORDING to a statement released on Thursday August 11, personnel specialised in the environment from the Guardia Civil in Almeria, Miteco (Spanish Ministry of Ecologi cal Transition) and the Junta de Andalucia, are jointly investigating the damages caused to signposting on several beaches of the Cabo de Gata­Nijar Natural Park in Almeria. According to the current legislation, any act that involves the destruction, deterioration, removal or change of location of signs in pro tected natural areas can be classified as a criminal offence, as it poses a threat to the conservation of the coastal habitats and af fects the safety of visitors. One of the Guardia Civil’s duties is to enforce all laws related to environmental conservation, protected areas, water resources, hunting and fishing, animal abuse, archaeological and palaeontological sites and land use. The Guardia Civil has asked for full citizen collaboration in reporting these types of offences to make sure that the per petrators are prosecuted, as they put people at risk and endanger the environment.

THE Mojacar councillor for Tourism, Emmanuel Agüero, held a press conference on Monday August 8 to an nounce the municipality’s in tention to take part in the Ecovidrio Green Flag cam paign again this year. Ecovidrio is a non­profit or ganisation dedicated to man aging the selective collection of glass containers in Spain. It seeks to guarantee high­quali ty glass recycling by investing in projects and resources, rais ing awareness among the public and promoting the use of more environmentally friendly packaging. In the 2021 edition, Mo jacar won first place in An dalucia, managing to recycle 70,000 kilos of grass between July and August alone. This year, there will be 43 Andalu cian municipalities competing for the Ecovidrio Green Flag. Emmanuel Agüero said: “It is important to encourage participation in recycling, es pecially at the times of the year when there is a lot of ac tivity in the hospitality sec tor.” A third of all glass con tainers put into circulation are consumed in summer and 25 per cent of this is directly gen erated by the hospitality sec tor.

This initiative was an nounced three years ago but was delayed by the pandemic. Now that the restrictions have been lifted, preparations for the fair dedicat ed to the patron saint of Albox have finally re sumed, with the event set to take place from September 8 to 11, following the pilgrimage on September 7. The celebration will begin on Thursday September 8, a local holiday, with the open ing of the stalls at 1pm. There will then be a series of religious and recreational activities, the latter of which include entertainment, rides and Althoughcompetitions.thefestivities will begin on the Thursday, they will be officially inaugurated on September 9, with a speech from Antonio Saldaña, parish priest of the church of La Con cepción and rector of the El Saliente Sanctu ary, and a gala for local high school students. THE Guardia Civil is investigating two drivers for offences against road safety In both road safety cases, the alleged perpe trators recorded the events with their mobiles and uploaded them to a well­known social me dia network. The first person under investiga tion is a man who was driving a car on the CV801 road, Ibi ­ Banyeres de Mariola, in the province of Alicante, along a stretch where the famous rally ‘Les Revoltes de Ibi’ takes place, which counts towards the Spanish Mountain Championship. This person, wishing to emulate the participants, in a BMW 330 CD model car, drove recklessly at high speed, constantly driv ing in the wrong direction on a stretch of road with numerous hairpin bends and hardly enough visibility to see oncoming traffic, all of which took place at night. The driver was sentenced to a 14­month ban on driving and given a fine. The second person under investigation drove on the roads of the Serra de Tra muntana, between the towns of Banyalbufar and Esporles, overtaking in a reckless manner and skidding when negotiating bends, invading the opposite direction where other vehicles were driving, with total disregard for his own life and that of other road users.

A MAN has been arrested for robbing three Albacete bank branches at gunpoint. The de tainee is accused of four robberies in the Al bacete area of Spain, three completed and one attempted, in which he used a firearm. The arrest took place when he had just committed a robbery at a bank branch in Mi naya.The robber has been remanded in prison, according to the Guardia Civil on Saturday, August 13. The Guardia Civil, as part of operation ‘Acuapalo’, has arrested a man as the alleged perpetrator of four robberies with violence and intimidation, three of them completed and one attempted, committed in bank branches in the Albacete towns of Barrax, Madrigueras and Minaya. The investigation began last May after the first robbery was committed in the town of Barrax. The second robbery took place in July in an other bank in Madrigueras. From the second robbery, the investigators began a series of surveillance of the main sus pect. This is when this individual carried out the third robbery in the town of Minaya, where the day before he had tried to commit another robbery, and was later arrested by the officers.

A FIRE on August 13 in the Zaragoza municipality of Añon de Moncayo forced the evacuation of the town, along with a nearby urbani sation and the neighbouring town of Alcala de Moncayo. In total, more than 1,000 people had to leave their homes because of the flames, which spread to the neighbouring towns of Borja and Ambel. The fire also led to the evacuation of the nursing home in the Zaragoza municipality of Ve ra de TarazonaMoncayo.Council adapted the city’s sports centre to help shelter the evicted. Through its Instagram ac count, the council an nounced that this space was available for any townsfolk “who may need accommo dation.”Residents of Vera de Moncayo were voluntarily evicted, as well as the Veru ela Monastery. As reported by Zaragoza Provincial Coun cil, it was closed to the public at around 5:30pm due to the proximity of the flames.

THE Balearic Islands’ Formentera lit up as a £20 million superyacht burst into flames. The brand new 43.7­metre vessel Aria SF was destroyed in a fire off the coast of Cala Saona. Maritime Rescue of Formentera confirmed the news on Friday, August 12 in a Twitter post that read, “Salvamar Acrux and Guardamar Concepción Arenal, from our Coordination Cen tre in Palma, have been mobilised in the area.”

The Guardia Civil were contacted when some smoke from the yacht appeared at around 5.00pm on Thursday, August 11. The smoke was visible from as far away as Ibiza, local press in Ibiza confirmed. A spokesman for the Spanish Coastguard Service confirmed that the seven crew and nine passengers were all safe and had been evacuat ed onto a police boat. Paolo Scuderi the 61­year­old Ambassador for Monaco’s Tourism bought the yacht in 2019 but it only left the shipyard last month The cause of the fire is as yet unknown.

SPAIN’S Ministry of Health has called on people to donate blood, reminding them that donations provide an essential supply of blood to hospitals for multiple treatments and surgery. The Ministry of Health said that all those who are able to donate should do so at local centres. Last year, more than one and a half mil lion people between 18 and 65 years of age donated blood in Spain and 15 per cent of them did so for the first time. The donations enabled a total of 1,886,500 transfusions to be carried out and 493,000 sick people to be caredForfor.those donating blood in Andalucia there is an app, APP Dona Sangre providing information about where to donate and the history of donations. THE National Geographic In stitute (IGN) has reported that between 11pm local time on Wednesday, August 10, and 4am on Thursday, August 11, a total of 63 earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano , on the Canary island of La Palma , which they say corresponds to a low­magnitude seismic swarm. The IGN specified that the largest magnitude earth quake of 1.7 mbLg was recorded at 2.48am, at a depth of 12km. Swarms of this type are normal within the post eruptive process in which this area of the island of La Palma finds itself, added the IGN. It continues to moni tor the seismic activity in the area. During the month of Ju ly, IGN specified that a total of 245 earthquakes were regis tered in the Canary Islands. A maximum magnitude of 3.6 mbLg was recorded at 7.26pm on July 16. It had its epicentre about 100km north of the island of Tenerife. There were three earth quakes felt by the population during July, according to the information collected through the electronic macroseismic questionnaires sent.

TWO track workers were almost struck by a freight train travelling at 61 mph (98 km/h) at around 00.06am on Monday July 11. The incident occurred just south of Penkridge station in Staffordshire, England. The track workers moved clear of the path of the train less than one second before it reached their position, the UK govern ment’s Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) confirmed on Thursday, August 11. Another train was passing the track work ers on an adjacent line as the freight train approached them. At the time of the incident, the track workers involved were investigating an on going fault with the overhead line equip ment which was preventing trains with elec tric traction from using this section of the line, causing significant levels of disruption to train services in the area.

THE singing group All Aloud has re sumed activities after a hiatus due to Covid. They slowly started up again in March as restrictions eased, but were forced to speed up their revival when they were asked to perform a charity concert at Amigo’s Market in support of the Red Cross, which was providing vital aid to Ukrainian refugees. After some hurried practice sessions, they gave a successful con cert in April and helped to raise near ly €1,500 in support of a worthwhile cause.AllAloud is a community choir based in Albox and is open to all. There are no auditions and there is no requirement to read music. The group is social, regularly meeting for a drink and a chat before and after singing sessions. All Aloud also holds several social functions during the year, including a Christmas lunch, a summer party and various impromp tu meals along the way. As part of the reincarnation pro cess, All Aloud is determined to enter the digital world and has created a new Facebook group. The website is currently being updated but contains a lot of information about the group. All Aloud sings a wide variety of songs, including popular music, folk, songs from musicals, light opera and pretty much anything that the group members request. Once considered to be riddled with bureaucracy, it appears that the Spanish authorities in India are much more reliable than their European Union counterparts as they are much quicker in offering appoint ments and also actually issue the visas in a much shorter peri od of time once approved. Technically, it is illegal to go ‘visa shopping’ but it is to the benefit of the Spanish economy to encourage Indians to travel via Spain even if Indian trav ellers only stop overnight in the country and then move on to other Schengen countries. After the pandemic situation eased and on March 27, 2022 In dia allowed international flights, a pent­up demand for both busi ness and tourist travel to Europe exploded and according to re ports, it can take up to 10 weeks to obtain a Schengen visa for some countries whilst Spain (and also Greece) often take just a week.Currently one of the longest waits is for entry to Germany but this is because it is one of the most in demand countries that Indians want to visit and there seems to be insufficient staff to carry out initial inter views.It isn’t just Schengen countries causing the problems as with so many students taking up places in the UK and USA, many Indians have had to amend their holiday plans to the benefit of countries like the Maldive Islands and United Arab Emirates which are much closer and easier to enter.

SPANISH energy company Iberdrola has begun operations of the Francisco Pizarro solar photovoltaic (solar power) project in Extremadura. HOW come even though all the right authorities in the USA have had access to Jeffrey Epstein’s and Ghislaine Maxwell’s address books plus, I’m guessing some witness statements, they are the only two nicked? And he supposedly topped himself. Bit strange isn’t it? Or is it me just think ing there might be a conspiracy going on? Conspiracy theories don’t seem so ridiculous these days. I reckon in a few years’ time you will be seeing adverts and getting ‘phone calls asking, ‘Were you vaccinated between 2020 and 2022? If so, you may be entitled to a serious amount of compensation’ and I’m not joking! I think it’s time to change what is taught in school. Get rid of all the tosh that 99 per cent of all students will never use and start teaching them how to feed a family of four when energy bills and food bills add up to more than you earn a month. Learning French won’t help when you can’t feed your kids or pay your rent or mortgage. Idiots in Parliament do not live in the real world. Children should be taught that politicians will lie just to get votes. Teach that instead of how the theory of politics should work. I’m not very clever. My daughter on the other hand is, so I found it almost impossible to help her with homework when she was growing up. I was however, for some reason, quite a good retailer and sales per son. So one day I was really pleased when she asked me to look at her business studies paper that she had got top marks for. I looked at it and said that it was a really good bit of work and her marks were fabulous but if you tried to put it into the real world it would be a disaster and not be a profitable business because there were so many ‘problems’ that had not been taken into consider ation. The point I was trying to teach her was that when doing a business plan it can’t just be done by the book. There are so many variables and none of these are taught or even discussed. I remember one occasion at school I was asked a maths question and although I got the answer right I didn’t show the way I worked it out so therefore it was marked wrong. I admittedly did it by trial and error but that’s how you have to do things sometimes in the real world.

High temperatures can affect glucose levels and for someone with dia betes, maintaining hydra tion and a good diet is fundamental to enjoying a calm summer in the heat. This year, the first weeks of summer have seen temperatures above 40 degrees. This puts peo ple with diabetes at risk. However, here is some advice for how to stay healthy in summer. People with diabetes can dehydrate much more quickly if glucose accumu lates in the blood, which increases urination fre quency and the sensation ofItthirst.isrecommended that you drink a minimum of two litres of water a day to prevent dehydration. Isotonic drinks are also recommended for postexercise hydration be cause they contain more sugars than water. For diabetics, diet is im portant, particularly dur ing the hot weather. They should avoid fasting for more than seven hours. Experts also recommend measuring glucose levels at least five times a day, especially if your usual routine changes over summer.

IF you have never done it before, camping with your dog can be a highly enjoyable experience for both of you, but you need to prepare to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Firstly, check which campsites allow dogs, as taking a pet to a campsite where it is not al lowed may result in a hefty fine. Also check the value for money, whether it can be accessed by car or other means of transport, what the sur roundings are like and what rules are in place. Check the reviews left by other dog owners. Make sure your dog’s vaccination booklet is up­to­date and have them checked at the vet’s beforehand to give you an idea of their current state of health. Helping you navigate the circle of strife

IN the swimming pool at El Capis trano, children and teenagers are splashing around and whooping with delight. They are clearly hav ing fun, but are they really happy? Many of them have all the lat est technological devices, fashion able possessions and modern conveniences. Most of them are from northern Europe, enjoying once again their annual holiday abroad in a sunny environment. Back home, they will have ac cess to social media and all the lat est gadgets. For those not de prived by inflation and poverty there seems to be instant gratifi cation. Everything is so easy at the touch of a switch or a keypad. So, what are their hobbies and inter ests? They will be very different from ours in the 50s. We had no pocket calculators, let alone personal computers or mobile phones. We had never heard of Microsoft, e­mails or Google, let alone Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. We kept up with friends and news by meeting them rather than through social media. Aged seven, I recall the excite ment of my first glimpse of the sea and the beach at Bognor Reg is. By then I was collecting postage stamps and, together with an at las, learning about other countries all over the world. The stamps in my albums colourfully depicted their natural features and resources. Butterflies and rubber from Malaya, giraffes and coffee from Tanganyika, tigers and tea from Ceylon, tou cans from Brazil and zebras from Bechuanaland.Therewasso much pleasure in this simple, popular pursuit; sav ing stamps from mail from abroad, buying them from a philatelist or swapping duplicates with friends ­ and mounting them in Then,albums. from childhood to teenage there was the weekly is sue of Enid Blyton’s ‘Sunny Sto ries’, graduating to ‘Dandy’ and ‘Champion’ comics, ‘Children’s Newspaper’, ‘Illustrated’ maga zine and ‘The Economist’. Penguin books, in distinctive or ange and white, published my favourite authors, including Or well, Hemingway, Camus, Moravia and others. There was al so the Saturday children’s mati nee at the local cinema and, later, the traditional jazz clubs. It seems inconceivable that young people today would regu larly spend a whole day on a draughty railway station, waiting for the arrival of each passenger or freight train in order to record the number of the locomotive. Further than that, I would cycle with a friend from Aylesbury to Oswestry or Doncaster, staying the nights at Youth Hostels, in or der to prowl the sheds where outof­service engines were stored. This was the pointless but thor oughly enjoyable pursuit of trainspotting. And it got us out and about. But would it be safe for 12­year­olds to do that today? We had no television until I was 16. We met girls at the local dance ­ not online ­ and communicated with our friends face­to­face whenever we met them. Most cars had no heaters; holi days abroad were an adventure for the privileged few. But life was exciting. And our future was not threatened by climate change.

Now don’t get me wrong I am not a global warming denier or a climate change conspiracy theorist (although the teenage climate warriors of late are surely the most excruciating irri tants since the Bubonic Plague) but it does seem to me that every year with out fail we are sweltering under the misconception that the heat is some what peculiar or dystopian. The Earth is about to explode and the seas are rising / evaporating / freezing (delete as appropriate). I can remember the heatwave of ‘76 when Londoners even removed their cardi gans and sat red faced on the brown grass at Vicky park. In history the Thames has both boiled and frozen. The weather, as we Brits know, has forever been a flighty mistress whose capriciousness is only matched by her inability to show up on time. It is true that humans have systemat ically ruined our beautiful planet. What other species can spot a forest and gleefully imagine a block of flats or a gas plant in its stead. We also desper ately need to wind in our excessive consumption and our reliance on plas tic (unfortunately I have an Amazon shopping addiction and prefer my fruit and veg wrapped in layers of shiny cling film so I am not one to talk). I have several so­called vegan ,eco warrior friends who think nothing of taking four or five flights a year. The sheer hypocrisy of these people ex pounding save the earth’s platitudes and asking poor families in far flung places to curb their excesses and get rid of the family cow whilst themselves hacking up the ozone with contrails as they travel in one of the most climate damaging vehicles ever created. These same people drive to the recycling plant, pop to the prohibitively expen sive local whole food shop in their gas guzzlers and smugly ask Alexa to book a ticket to that lovely elephant retreat in SoThailand.whileit is true that vegetarianism is good for health and the planet and we definitely need to stop throwing plastic bags, wet wipes and coke cans in the ocean, a good hypocrisy filter would not go amiss. Perhaps the re ceipt of their last journey could be dis played holographically above their heads whenever they mention the cli mate or their purchase of hummus from the Alpaca Farm. LIVING in a multi­cultural so ciety exposes us to hear many languages, the majority of which we do not understand unless of course, we have cer tain linguistic gifts. Although most of us speak our native language and possi bly one or two others, we all have another common lan guage which many of us over look and very seldom use; this is the language we use to speak to ourselves. Why is this useful? Well, what we tell ourselves is what we tend to believe whether it is true or not. Quite often we are habit ually telling ourselves that we cannot do something or may never achieve a particular thing that deep down we’d love to achieve. This language becomes so habitual that it becomes part of us and once that belief kicks in, it can be very difficult to break free from those shackles holding us back from who or what we want to be. So, how do we change our language and the way we speak to ourselves? Quite sim ply, it’s a matter of starting the process all over again. Back to language school and startTheafresh.reason we tell ourselves that we cannot achieve some thing or reach a goal is be cause at some point, some body, or a negative experi ence has given us a reason to believe that. It is then rein forced each time a challenge or goal relating to what we are looking to achieve arises. The key to remember is, if old habits can influence your life in a negative way, then new positive habits can do the very opposite. As an example, maybe you have been telling yourself for years that you’re not clever enough to have a particular role in your work place. That’s your old language speaking to you. Your new language could be “I used to believe I wasn’t clever enough but I now know better and think differently.’’ So, start today, learn a new language and learn how to live your life in a new, positive and empowering way. WHEN a UK weight­loss company recruited a paid couch potato to eat high­fat foods and its weight­loss products, it advertised for a ‘product testing associate’. In the good old days a spade was a spade. Now job titles are a minefield of eu phemism and gobblede gook.Often a fancy title simply hides low wages, and a job’s importance is usually in versely proportional to the length of its title. A ‘Colour Distribution Technician’ IS... a painter and decorator! But shouldn’t we judge these people by what they DO at work, not by their convoluted, quasiEnglish titles? (‘Regional Sub­Manager for In novation­Based Strategies’, anyone?) Or le gitimate job titles masking the incompetence of the superfluous individuals concerned whether they’re non­executive directors or assistant deputy CEOs? If someone does a good job, who cares if they're styled ‘Czar for the Homeless’ or ‘Pontiff of theAsPLC’?acrime writer, I try to keep my suspects’ occupa tions as realistic as possible. Who wants to read about a ‘Process Operative’? (Spy? Counterspy? MI5 Asset? No, this is actually a job at a chicken processing factory, packing products and moulding Chicken Kievs.)

IF you are planning on going away for a while anytime soon, you would probably prefer to spend your time enjoying yourself than think ing about whether you are going to get a nasty surprise when you get back. There are several things you can do to keep your home as safe as possible while you are on holiday.

TRAVELLING inevitably involves spending money on things like plane tickets, petrol and hotels, which can get pricey, but if you can avoid making some rookie mistakes, you will not pay more than you have to.

Save money on holiday

Start by planning ahead. Booking plane or train tickets at the last minute is much costlier than booking in advance, and the same applies to hotels. The important thing is to find a balance between eating at restaurants or eating at your accommo dation. Listen to some local advice to discover some lesser­known gems while saving money. Finally, pack appropriately. Bringing clothing that is unsuitable for the climate will mean buying clothes while there. Also, you will need to pay extra at the airport if your suitcase is too heavy.

Fortunately, a significant amount is usually required for them to experi ence poisoning symptoms. Finally, lily­of­the­valley has striking bell­shaped white flowers and a sweet scent, but it can affect the cardiovas cular system. It is usually absorbed by the intestinal tract, thereby prevent ing serious problems, but large quan tities can be extremely dangerous.

IN South Africa (SA), you can not hunt in the national re serves ­where photo tourists go. However, photo tourists want lots of animals, modern facilities, and pastimes. Their activities require huge investments in infrastructure and consume vast quantities of energy, carbon and water that deprive rural people and de stroy the environment, turning the natural bush into a glorified zoo. Even ‘non­hunted’ animals need culling ­ but because of animal rights politics, it can’t be done.The Kruger Park has far too many elephants that it can safe ly carry, and is turning into a trashed elephant park at the cost of proper biodiversity. Quite separately, 40 million acres of remote, dry private farmland in SA is now used for hunting and raising 20 million wild animals in natural bush, because hunting, especially high value hunting brings in a slightly better farm income than cattle in a country where only 13 per cent is suitable for rain­fed crops. These are not places where photo tourists go, and farmers could not recoup the investment needed in serv ing them. Those 40 million acres of bush support trillions of animals, birds and plants that are not hunted ­ hence the con servationHowever,value.trophy hunting is very important ­ a trophy hunter pays about 100 times more than an eco­tourist, needs no infrastructure, and disrupts the general wildlife far less. Worse still, however, is that without trophy hunting, cattle would be more profitable ­ the vast hunting grounds would be cleared of ALL wildlife and turned over to cattle or worse still, cleared of all vegeta tion as well and turned over to GM crops. Hunting animals might be abhorrent, but not hunting them might turn out worse.

Drawing inspiration from BMW en gineering and curated by Attilia Fat tori Franchini, this commission brings together art, technology, and design, in a pioneering multi­platform format. Investigating the history and politics of sound and its surroundings, Nikita Gale’s practice questions themes of invisibility and audibility recasting the dynamic between performer and spectator. Within the work, notions of witnessing, visibility, and representa tion are subverted and destabilised. The technologies of sound and speed have been closely associated since the 1960s. In fact, the Gibson Firebird, one of the most popular electric guitars, was designed by car designer Ray Dietrich and introduced to the general public in 1963.

Gale’s project ‘63/22’ explores the relationship between these technolo gies and unfolds how they have cul turally influenced one another through design. As part of the BMW Open Work 2022 commission, the artist will create a sculptural installa tion comprising a series of electric gui tars imagined in collaboration with BMW i7 designers and activated by live performances in the space. In addition, the artist will invite the BMW i7 designers to sketch utopian, functional, and dysfunctional guitar bodies, these sketches would provide the starting point for the creation of sculptural guitars, a mixture between a functional object and a sculpture.

MAZDA has always been a clever, more discerning choice of car no matter which model you opt for from the sales brochure. The CX­5 is Mazda’s medium sized SUV that while only a five­seater feels very spacious inside and handles much more crisply than you would expect of anPricesSUV. start at €34,572/ £29,245 and even the leadin model offers a good stan dard specification. Engine choices are 2.0­litre and 2.5litre petrol, 2.2­litre diesel in two power outputs and un usually all the engine choic es are naturally aspirated ie noAddedturbochargers.tothe engine choices are options for man ual or automatic gears and two or four­wheel­drive. My test model was a higher trim GT Sport model with 2.5­litre petrol power, automatic gears and allwheel­drive. One thing that has always set Mazda apart is the excellent build quality and although the CX­5 it doesn’t carry a premium badge it has a very premi um drive. On the road the CX­5 handles better than you might expect for an SUV and the steering makes for a surprisingly precise drive.The 2.5­litre engine in the test model performs well enough but doesn’t have the urge of a turbocharged unit so requires a slightly different style of driving. It’s a nice pairing with the sixspeed automatic gearbox though with responsive changes that make light work of busy journeys. Inside there are many welcome touches from a sensibly laid out fascia with buttons ­ so hurrah for a lack of over digitalisation that involves multiple menus for every minor task ­ to a plethora of soft touch materials. It gives a quietly comfortable and high quality feel to the in terior. Occupants are af forded a commendably lofty view from the multiadjustable front seats and excellent interior space makes for an airy feel de spite the sombre tones of the test car’s interior. At not far short of €47k/£40k my top line CX­5 is perilously close to premi um machinery like BMW and Audi SUV models, but it more than holds its own against these premium Ger man rivals.
