To make this massive transit of people possible, the Spanish govern ment organises the annual Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE), with the objective of ensuring that everyone can reach their destinations in the best possible conditions without the ports becoming completely overcrowded.
THE Provincial Council of Almeria has launched this year’s edition of its ESports and Video Games Cir cuit, an initiative that will be taken to 12 municipali ties over the summer. The aim is to offer a fun recre ational activity to the smaller towns of the province, encouraging young people from Almeria to meet and play collaborative video games together. Participants can play games such as FIFA 22, Just Dance 2022, NBA, Super Mario World and much more. Many of them require players to form teams. Video games of a violent nature will be avoided. This year, the activity will take place in the munici palities of Abrucena, Albox, Balanegra, Cobdar, Enix, Felix, Pechina, Santa Cruz de Marchena, Velez Blan co, Zurgena and Maria. On August 14, the activity was held in Maria and was attended by the deputy for Sports and Young People, José Antonio García, who is also the mayor of the town. He said: “Each day allows participants to enjoy numerous games on different consoles, giving young people the chance to make positive use of their free time.”

ON Thursday August 18, the Guardia Civil Command in Almeria collaborated with the non-profit environmen tal organisation Equinac to release a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) back into the sea. The animal was rescued after it became trapped in a fishing net in Roquetas de Mar, spent time recovering and was final ly Thereleased.loggerhead turtle is one of the largest species of sea turtles, sometimes measuring up to 1.2 metres in length. The main threats to this species are plastic in the sea, trawling nets, longlines and traps, and it is classed as a vulnerable species in Spain. One of the functions of the Guardia Civil is to enforce the protection of natural areas, including the marine environment. However, this responsibility falls on all citizens. Cetaceans and sea turtles are legally protect ed. They may not be harmed, disturbed, manipulated or reintroduced into the sea without the express au thorisation of the competent administration, which is Equinac in Almeria. The appropriate response upon finding a stranded or trapped animal is to call 112 or 062 as soon as possible.

Almeria was the second most important port during OPE, with 17 per cent of all vehicles loaded, after only Al geciras, with 65.5 per cent. The Port of Almeria also ranked first in terms of the number of destinations avail able (four), the most popular of which was AlgecirasTangi er (43.4 per cent). SIX Los Bandidos runners took on the eighth race in the Circuito de Carreras Pop ulares Diputacin de Almeria 2022 in Bal anegra on Saturday, August 20. The race was advertised as 8.13k but was just under at 7.74k. It was still hot when the starting gun went off at 8pm and got more humid each lap. The threelap route was very well supported by the people of Balanegra, with one household spraying runners with their garden hose. The winner finished in an impressive 27:11, with the first lady in 34:06. Overall, 109 runners crossed the finish line. Tro phies were awarded to first, second and third places in each age group as well as to the overall winners. All competitors re ceived a running shirt.

DOMINGO SALAS, whose disappearance was reported on Tuesday, August 16, in Pulpí, was found alive on Wednesday, August 17, inside an old disused railway tunnel. Fortyyearold Salas was rescued from the tunnel and taken to hospital by ambulance, suffering from symptoms of dehydra tion, as reported to local media municipal sources. According to the same sources, the location of a torch owned by the missing led to the aforementioned disused railway tunnel, where he was finally discovered and rescued by the troops that had been carry ing out the search. The search was coordinated by Civil Protec tion and the Guardia Civil, involving more than 150 people in cluding officers, volunteers and family members.

The group started with a small number of regu lars and has grown with runners, joggers and walkers, from permanent residents to regular visitors and holiday makers, cover ing the 5k Mojacar Paseo. ON Wednesday August 17, 200 people enjoyed ‘Sunset at the Lighthouse’ (Atardecer en el Faro), an activity held at the Port of Almeria every Wednes day throughout the sum mer. The event, organised by the Port Authority (APA), is always extreme ly popular, both for the spectacular sunset and the live music. Recently, the music was provided by the singer Sara Marcos and the guitarist Arturo Palenzuela.Thereare no more tick ets available for the re maining dates in August, but the Port Authority will soon open a new registra tion period for those who wish to attend on September 7 or 14. ALMERIA once again leads the way in Andalucia for ex ports in the first six months of the year, with the fruit and vegetable sector at the fore front. Between January and June 2022, Almeria was once again the largest exporting province with a sales value of €2.3 million, corresponding to over 1.6 million tons of fruit and vegetables Economically,mainly.theincrease in its value compared to 2021 was 15.4 per cent. Of this final amount of exports in Almeria, a large percentage corre sponds directly to the fruit and vegetable sector, with a value of €2.2 million. In the first six months of this year, this sector accumu lated €4.5 million worth of sales, with a percentage in crease of 11.3 per cent. After the province of Almeria is Sevilla with €1.8 million and Huelva with €1.3 million.Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Sustain able Development, Carmen Crespo, wanted to recognise the effort made by Andalu cian producers, and especially “those who put their fresh products in very distant mar kets every day, and more so at times like the present when transport costs have skyrocketed.”

THE Guardia Civil has arrested the perpetrator of various crimes against people and property who, in addition to two stolen vehi cles and the cash seized, made up to 37 payments with stolen bank cards. Both the crimes committed and the arrest of the perpetrator took place in the municipality of Roquetas de Mar.
THE Vuelta a España, one of the world’s most important cycling com petitions, kicked off in Utrecht, the Nether lands, on August 19. This is the second time that the event has started in a Dutch city, as it also did so in As sen in 2009. The race has also started outside Spain on two other oc casions: in Lisbon, Por tugal, in 1997, and in Nîmes, France, in 2017. The 77th edition of Vuelta a España will once again pass through the province of Alme ria.On August 31, the competitors will race from Alhama de Murcia to Cabo de Gata (191.2 km). The distance to be covered within Almeria itself will be 133.7 km and the competitors will travel through some of the province’s best landscapes in places such as Pulpi, Vera, Mojacar, Carbon eras and Nijar. The route is divided into 21 stages, and the section that runs through Almeria is the 11th. It will be the first time in history that the Vuelta a España passes through all eight provinces of Andalucia.

Almeria ramps up security
IN addition to the Sanfermines in Pamplona, there are many other festivals in Navarra that include running of the bulls, in which various bovines are released on a specific route so that the attendees run in front of them until they finish, normally, in a bullring. These festivities, as is the case of Beire, Mur chante or Jaurrieta, among many others, are celebrated on dates other than those of the in ternationally known Sanfermines, such as the month of August. As expected, this type of situation involving loose animals and human beings in open spaces leads to scenes of true chaos, even more so considering that these powerful animals can cause real destruction in the cities. Two animals from one of these bull runs managed to sneak into a CaixaBank branch, with the video being shared on Twitter by Javier Carabias, @javitaurino. The video shows a man attempting to open the door and get out of the animal’s way, finally succeeding as the two bulls leave the bank to cheers from the crowd. Some have found the video amusing, while other have pointed out the danger of these events.
THE city council of Almeria has prepared a security oper ation for this year’s Virgen del Mar festivities, with more than 200 troops in action in cluding Local Police, firefight ers, Civil Protection, health personnel, private security, personnel of the National Po lice and the Guardia Civil. When did you start cre ating comics? My father wrote some books and film scripts. At present one of his projects is being produced as a graphic novel. He works with a famous artist, draw ing for some of the great est brands in the games and comics industry. I tried to contribute on some occasions, but of course, it is difficult to start as a top professional. My parents invested in art sup plies. Later, I got an iPad, and I asked my father to send samples of my work to some newspapers ‘just to try’. The rest is history, as they say. Is this something you hope to have a career in? I believe that one day I will be a good architect and artist. Already, some of my works are on the walls of classrooms, offices and homes. I participate in art competitions and many people wear my hand crafted jewellery. I love bringing beauty and joy to people. What sort of subjects do you most love to concen trate on? ON Thursday August 18, it was revealed that exports from Catalonia have grown by 17.2 per cent in the first half of 2022 com pared to this time last year, as sales abroad reached €46.492 million between January andTheJune.ministry of industry, commerce, and tourism have indicated that if these statis tics are compared to the period between January and June in 2019, exports have in creased by almost a quarter. A 45-YEAR-OLD female driver at the wheel of a highpowered Porsche somehow managed to smash into another Porsche parked outside a home in Madrid on, Sat urday, August 20. The im pact of the collision left the parked vehicle lodged on top of the woman’s car.According to a spokesman for Emergen cies 112 Community of Madrid, the driver hit the parked car with such force that both vehicles went through the garden wall of a house on Calle Henares de Caceres de Al cala in the capital. After receiving the alert, the 112 emergency operators immediately deployed three fire appli ances from the Communi ty of Madrid to the loca tion. They oversaw the removal of the two vehi cles from the wall, with a tow truck subsequently pulling them free.

A RECENT report from the Hospitality Asso ciation of Spain showed that the tradition al ‘menu of the day’ (menu del dia) offered by many establishments is still as popular as ever, despite a rise in prices. With inflation pushing up the cost of en ergy and food, the study revealed an aver age increase of €1 had occurred, without any real impact on consumption by cus tomers. The average cost worked out at €12.80, which is an increase of only €1 compared to average prices in 2016.

EVERY year the Romeria de la Virgen Saliente sets out from Albox on September 7. This all begins with a Novena a joyous precession during which the pilgrims carry offerings and gifts, along with whatever provi sions they may need for their evening journey. They travel 18 kilometres uphill, many barefoot or on their knees, until they reach the beautiful Saliente Monastery. At dawn on September 8, which is the feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, the Sanctuary is where the pilgrims commemorate a Marian apparition that hap pened at the end of the 17th century. Traditionally, a stew is shared out among the beggars and the poor, the Virgen is stopped to look at the valley, and Salve is sung by all. During the day you may visit the Sanctuary, attend a mass, or walk between the many stalls there. Whilst this is a religious festival, its significance has been overtaken by a more festive atmosphere, and firecrackers are often set off during the journey. Never theless, it is a wonderful event to see and be part of.

The exhibition invites the viewer to observe bird’seyeview miniature models of the most iconic spots of Almeria’s Cabo de GataNijar Natural Park, including Monsul Beach, Los Muertos Beach, Arrecife de las Sirenas, Isleta del Moro, Cala de Enmedio, San Ramon Castle, Punta Negra del Barronal and the church of Las Salinas. The models are made to scale with synthetic materials and are highly realistic. This is the artist’s first public exhibi tion, which can be visited be tween 10.30am and 1.30pm and between 5pm and 8pm from Tuesday to Saturday and between 10.30am and 1.30pm on Sundays.

Lump-sum payments from UK pensions are taxable in Spain. UK rental income If you are resident in Spain and rent out property in the UK, the income could be tax able in both countries, though the UK tax paid can be offset against the Spanish liability. In Spain, it is taxed at the scale rates of income tax. A 60% reduction is available in Spain against the net rental in come, but only for long-term lettings.

I REALLY do appreciate some of the mail sent by readers of my weekly waffle. Mind you sometimes they re ally contain more flimflam than the ol’ boy’s column itself. One I received this week consid ered me a ‘total Pratt’ for supporting a Conservative government. Even this assumption was not specifically true, I don’t blindly support a party who of ten find it difficult to face up to obvi ous problems, including the forgoing of realistic efforts to prevent the dis integration of British culture; the fact is, whatever my choices, I would just never sanction the woke induced left ies, simple as that. This reader also insinuated that the UK had condoned the last 12 years of liars; he appeared to forget that the ‘New’ Labour government who pre ceded the Conservatives, was used as a gravy train by a young, utterly right wing schemer and his conspiratorial wife, who even insisted on changing the name of the utterly demolished opposing party to further his own ends. An extremely ambitious opera tor, Mr Blair then proceeded to run the country into the ground, (not him self or the wife of course!) In close league with another American crook, he also sent the UK into a disastrous war for a recompense of cheap oil. Finally realising he had screwed the UK all he could and his game was up, with perfect timing he ran out, leav ing the last two years of leadership to his power hungry partner Gordon Brown; a selfindulgent idiot who, dripping with selfgratification, then dispelled his own ridiculous party of losers into total oblivion, basically by finally even selling off most of the country’s gold for a pittance, which actually resulted in his chancellor un believably leaving a note in the office of his successor, stating that there was in fact ‘no money left.’

I COULDN’T agree with you more (Leapy, Issue 1933). I’ve been saying this for years about Rhodesia they were called the ‘breadbasket of Africa’. But alas as you have alighted too it’s now a cor rupt, barren, and dangerous place, more so if you’re white. My wife and I intend to live in Spain next year. My reason is that I was in the British army for 12 years and the po lice for 30 years. Fortytwo years in total of service to my country and for what. IT seems that whilst the rising cost of living is affecting coun tries around the world that Britain is in a worse position than many. No matter what your politics may be or your stance in Brexit, the situation in Spain whilst bad, is nowhere near as dire as it is in the UK. Whilst the politicians who encouraged a Brexit vote and those who followed that advice were not able to forecast the future, it seems that the European Union has been the finan cial saviour of both Italy and Spain with the billions pumped into the economy from the recovery fund.

MERCEDES BENZ has long been at the fore front of premium motor ing and its latest range is no exception. My con centration here is the CClass in saloon form. The range includes sa loon, estate, coupe and cabriolet models with mild hybrid petrol and diesel along with plugin hybrid options. Prices start from €47,290/£39,860 for the Sport model which comes with standard features such as LED lights with adaptive high beam assist, keyless start, navigation with smartphone integration, cruise control, automat ic wipers, climate con trol and heated front seats.My test model was at the higher end of the range, the AMG Line Premium Plus with diesel power under the bonnet. While it may carry the AMG name the AMG Line versions have all the styling cues, but the mechanical side of things remains unmo lested in terms of pow er. The 1.9litre diesel in the test car produces 265 hp and being diesel maximum torque is low down from just 18002200rpm. Inside the CClass you would be hard pressed to tell it’s a diesel providing the not inconsiderable accelera tive capacity. Also the mid 50s fuel economy is impressive for a car of thisInsideclass. it makes a pleasant change to find a car, especially a Ger man model, that isn’t graced with a surfeit of sombre tones, most of ten black or grey. Light ening up my test car’s interior, and adding a dash of additional class, were tobacco coloured centre seat panels and matching door cards. With the rest of the in terior in darker colours matched to the external grey paintwork it made for a nice contrast. On the road the CClass is a refined and smooth drive with plen ty of power in reserve should you require it. A sleek style, despite be ing a saloon, makes for a striking look and doesn’t really compromise head room access to the rear as is the case with many rakish saloons. The sus pension draws a nice line between being com pliant enough to soak up the bumps but with enough control to deal with twisty tarmac. Add driving modes of Com fort, ECO, Sport, Sport+ and Individual and you can see why it makes for an exemplary sports sa loon.Mercedes has had a reputation of being slightly more sedate than some rival German competitors but has more than levelled the field with the CClass AMG Line models. In total, from December to April, nine tracks will be used, and there will be 11 test days, 22 Endurance races of 40 minutes with a mandatory pit stop and the possi bility of driver change. The first race of the Nevada LPC Cup season, December 1718, will also be the inaugural race on the Circuito do Sol track. According to the organisers, anyone that becomes a Gold Club Member at Circuito do Sol will gain free entry for Nevada LPC Cup for the entire 2022 2023 season.
