Tamsin Brown TECHNICAL staff from the Ministry of the Environment and Territory of the Balearic Islands Government and the Palma Aquarium Founda tion released a loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) back into the sea on Friday August 19 following its re covery. The turtle, named Papaya, is one of 22 that have arrived at Palma Aquarium this year. The animal, which was re leased in the Mondragó Nat ural Park, arrived at the cen tre in June. Papaya’s two front flippers and neck had become entangled in a dis carded fishing net. Fishing nets used to be made from rope, but are now usually made from nylon, a type of plastic. So far this year, a to tal of 15 turtles have en tered the recovery centre in Palma after becoming en tangled in nylon nets, and four more arrived after they ingested plastic. Such entanglement often causes infections in the flip pers that can spread throughout the body, en dangering the animal’s life if the plastic is not removed. However, despite the best intentions of would be res cuers, what they do is NOT always the best for the tur tles.People who find a turtle entangled in sacks, nets, ropes or longlines are tempted to free it and re lease it again, this is some thing that should always be avoided. Anyone who comes across a protected species in trouble should ac tivate the 112 protocol. After notifying 112, take the turtle to whereever you are instructed (if you are at sea it can be taken on board in the shade and covered with a damp towel, until the end of the day’s sailing) where it can be attended to by the local veterinary team, and its wounds healed.

WITH prices on the increase, it is pushing restaurants in Mallorca to breaking point. The cost of oil, and some meats, has almost trebled in the past few months, and it is lessening the profitability of businesses within the hos pitality industry. This is forc ing them to take drastic ac tion.Restaurateurs know that if they increase their prices by too much, they will lose their customers, so they are offer ing a varied menu based on the prices of the products. Some places are cutting the amount of fried food they offer, so as to reduce electricity costs and the amount of oil they use.

RECRUITMENT and casting for the popular Netflix dra ma ‘The Crown’ took place in a hotel in Palma on Tues day August 23. The island will be used for filming of se ries 6, from next month. Many people turned up, from the crack of dawn, to be tested for various roles. Some had had trials before, but for many it was their first time. “I liked the first seasons of The Crown so much, when I found out that there was a casting here I did not hesitate to ap ply” said one hopeful extra, who has worked on other projects before now. Some of the hotel staff al so had go at breaking onto the screen, hoping for an op portunity to work with Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Princess Diana of Wales (Elizabeth Debicki). Locations to be used in this series are expected to be Andtrax and Palma. We will be shown the romance of Charles and Camilla, when William begins his studies at University and meets Kate - his future wife, and the night-time activities of young Prince Harry.

A 17-MONTH-OLD child was saved from drowning, by the lifeguard of a hotel in Alcudia, on Tuesday August 23. Before the police arrived, the life guard performed CPR on the child. When medics arrived, they were able to revive the little one and take them to Son Espases Hospital.

ON August 16, the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) celebrated the 150th anniversary of the creation of the com mittee that would later give rise to the current APB. On August 16, 1872, the director­general of Public Works authorised the creation of ‘a commit tee responsible for all that which is related to im provements to be made in the port of Palma’. To commemorate this date, the APB commis sioned a banner with the names of the current members of its Board of Directors. The illustrator, Flavia Gargiulo, and the calligrapher, Paz Alomar, were commissioned for the task. In 2022, the pres ident is Francesc Antich Oliver, the director is Jorge Nasarre López and the secretary of the Board of Directors is María Antonia Ginard Moll, the only woman to have ever held the position. The Madridbased illustrator, Flavia Gargiulo, decorated the banner with flowers and pomegranates and used golden details to enhance the 150th­anniversary lo go, while the calligrapher, Paz Alomar, opted for gothic lettering. The work was done on natural goatskin parchment.

The next ‘exceptional’ day on which the usual limit of three cruise ships may be exceeded will be September 24. It is expected that these exceptions will disap pear in 2023 and the maximum number of ships permitted at the port of Palma will be the same every day.

Bus renovations EMT Palma has started the renovation of the information screens located inside the bus es and the line frontal indica tors. This investment aims to streamline the technology present in the new buses and those already manufactured with those of the old fleet, and allows a total of 77 new information monitors to be in stalled and to renew up to 60 external indicator panels of lines and destinations present in the old bus fleet.

The campaign begins on October 4 and will end on December 31. The vouchers can be used at all shops participating in the #bonsilles balears programme, with a maximum of four vouchers (€60) redeemable per person. THE specialised Mountain Rescue Group (GRM), part of the Mallorca Fire Brigade, has already carried out 185 operations and rescues this year.Apart from 2020, when the number of operations de creased due to the pandem ic, this number has been in creasing year after year, with 2022 currently on track to set a new record. Tamsin Brown FIVE cruise ships docked in the port of Palma on August 20 on a designated ‘ex ceptional’ day. According to the agree ment between the Balearic Islands Gov ernment and shipping companies, the maximum number of ships that can dock on such days is four, or five if one of them has a capacity of fewer than 500 passen gers. The ships were the Aidacosma, Marella Discovery 2, Anthem of the Seas, Seabourn Sojourn and Norwegian Epic, with a total of approximately 16,500 tourists between them.

The plant is an impor tant part of marine ecosys tems in the Mediterranean and forms large underwater meadows.Throughout the month of August, as well as the work with the buoys, the Port Au thority has also been carry ing out an information cam paign to tell users about where the anchoring zone is located, how to make reser vations for private boats and how to use the zone correctly.Theother stages of the project will continue after the summer season, includ ing the removal of all the dead Posidonia oceanica. The anchoring zone with buoys at Formentor joins the other seven such zones which were set up at the beginning of the summer around the Balearic Islands, all managed by the Port Au thority.

ON August 18, the Ministry of Mobility and Hous ing of the Balearic Islands Government presented the draft decree for the regulation of real estate activity, which has the aim of preventing illegal offers, intrusion and unfair business practices. According to the draft decree, all real estate agents who wish to operate in the Balearic Is lands will have to present a statutory declaration in which they state that they will comply with the current regulations and that they are fully accred ited.Failure to provide an obligatory statutory decla ration that meets all the legal requirements will result in disciplinary proceedings and a sanction from the Ministry of Mobility and Housing. The regulations make it compulsory for estate agents to take out civil liability insurance to cover any damage they may cause in the course of their work, with a minimum capital sum of €100,000 per claim and €600,000 per year.

Regulation of real estate activity

The rates and allowances for Spanish succession and gift tax depend on the beneficiary, where the deceased and the beneficiary are resident, and where the assets are located. THE Island Waste Direc torate of the Department of Sustainability and the Envi ronment of the Consell de Mallorca is once again offer ing its waste management consultancy service to local councils, which seeks to give advice on how to create waste management plans and how to deal with any difficulties that might arise. One new feature of the consultancy programme will involve manually sorting the waste in the different recy cling bins in each municipali ty in order to determine the percentage of waste that has been deposited there incor rectly. This information is es sential for improving the quality of recycling. So far, 38 municipalities in Mallorca have used the ser vice. The vice­president of the Consell de Mallorca and councillor for Sustainability and the Environment, Auro ra Ribot, said: “The consul tancy programme is going very well. Once the diagnos tic work is done, we can work with the councils to identify the difficulties and help to resolve them. This is essential if we are to move towards sustainability. We invite all municipalities that have not yet applied to do so.”

As I am starting a com ic strip for your newspa per, everyone would probably expect me to say that I enjoy Art. Well, you are all right. Through art I find and lose myself at the same time. I enjoy every sec ond when I am creating. This year I will be study ing GCSEs in Art and Dra ma. I love Maths and En glish too. When did you start creating comics? My father wrote some books and film scripts. At present one of his projects is being pro duced as a graphic novel. He works with a famous artist, drawing for some of the greatest brands in the games and comics in dustry.Itried to contribute on some occasions, but of course, it is difficult to start as a top profession al. My parents invested in art supplies. Later, I got an iPad, and I asked my father to send sam ples of my work to some newspapers ‘just to try’. The rest is history, as they say. Is this something you hope to have a career in? I believe that one day I will be a good architect and artist. Already, some of my works are on the walls of classrooms, of fices and homes. I partic ipate in art competitions and many people wear my hand crafted jew ellery. I love bringing beauty and joy to peo ple. What sort of subjects do you most love to con centrate on? It is difficult for me to commit ­ at least so far. I am experimenting with different media, styles and materials. After fin ishing an acrylic paint ing, I will immediately start wood or stone carv ing. I do macramé, work with coconut shells and clay. Any thoughts on the future? In my opinion, the world is changing. Most of my friends consume only digital art. I feel that in the future I will gravitate more and more towards digital art. MARBELLA resident Ray Frost has just released a new single Lucky To Be Me from his latest album Waitin’ for the Sun which has become a hit in Aus tralia.Ray started playing gui tar at the age of 13 and as he grew up in Essex played in a selection of blues and rock bands in the 80s and 90s but worked as a builder rather than a pro fessional musician. In 2002 he moved to Spain where he played gui tar in local bars as well as teaching both guitar and ukulele whilst supple menting his income by continuing to work as a builder.AsRay explained “I wanted to spend more time with my music but it was my girlfriend who en couraged me to have confi dence in my ability to per form, so thanks in part to her that’s what I did.” Ray joined a number of high­profile British revival bands, starting with the Rubettes. After that was a four­year slot with Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich. Next up was a deputising role with Herman’s Hermits, which turned into an ongo ing arrangement but then came the pandemic. Ray explained “I had already decided that it was time to explore my own music and released my first album Coming Home in 2019 but with the lockdown I had plenty of time to write and record, releasing In my Life with a number guest musi cians including Savage Gar den's Daniel Jones from Australia.”Therewere more than enough songs from 2020 for Ray to produce his third album at the end of 2021 and this latest ver sion of Lucky To Be Me was re­recorded with the Australian market in mind. Speaking about the new single, Ray observed, “I guess you could say, Lucky To Be Me is somewhat au tobiographical, because it pretty much sums up the story of my life” Ray has now joined up with a number of British musicians based in the Costa del Sol to form Smokin’, a tribute to one of his all­time favourite bands Smokie.

The dancers, who should be completely masculine if men and ultrafeminine if female, should epitomise poise, pride and controlled sensuality. I REALLY do appreciate some of the mail sent by readers of my weekly waffle. Mind you sometimes they re ally contain more flimflam than the ol’ boy’s column itself. One I received this week consid ered me a ‘total Pratt’ for supporting a Conservative government. Even this assumption was not specifically true, I don’t blindly support a party who of ten find it difficult to face up to obvi ous problems, including the forgoing of realistic efforts to prevent the dis integration of British culture; the fact is, whatever my choices, I would just never sanction the woke induced left ies, simple as that. This reader also insinuated that the UK had condoned the last 12 years of liars; he appeared to forget that the ‘New’ Labour government who pre ceded the Conservatives, was used as a gravy train by a young, utterly right wing schemer and his conspiratorial wife, who even insisted on changing the name of the utterly demolished opposing party to further his own ends. An extremely ambitious opera tor, Mr Blair then proceeded to run the country into the ground, (not him self or the wife of course!) In close league with another American crook, he also sent the UK into a disastrous war for a recompense of cheap oil. Finally realising he had screwed the UK all he could and his game was up, with perfect timing he ran out, leav ing the last two years of leadership to his power hungry partner Gordon Brown; a self­indulgent idiot who, dripping with self­gratification, then dispelled his own ridiculous party of losers into total oblivion, basically by finally even selling off most of the country’s gold for a pittance, which actually resulted in his chancellor un believably leaving a note in the office of his successor, stating that there was in fact ‘no money left.’

And you really want to support the same people who voted this bunch in to power, a party which now includes the influx of millions of refugees and immigrants, who have since joined up and are basically mindful that a win by the left will eventually transform the culture of the whole country? Heaven help the UK. It has already lost hundreds of lu crative businesses through EU schem ing and financial exploitation, and voted out Boris, the one man who would have seen through their treachery and given Brexit a success ful consequence to all its brilliant UK ambitions. Prepare yourselves for a glut of UK strikes. They make great election ammunition and for the next couple of years the leftie enthusiasts, the media and the Labour party will absolutely love ‘em! IT seems that whilst the rising cost of living is affecting coun tries around the world that Britain is in a worse position than many. No matter what your politics may be or your stance in Brexit, the situation in Spain whilst bad, is nowhere near as dire as it is in the UK. Whilst the politicians who encouraged a Brexit vote and those who followed that advice were not able to forecast the future, it seems that the European Union has been the finan cial saviour of both Italy and Spain with the billions pumped into the economy from the recovery fund.

There is currently no leadership in the country and the To ry party is becoming increasingly divided over the leader ship election and it seems likely that if, as expected, Liz Truss wins, then senior politicians such as Rishi Sunak won’t find a place in her future cabinet. MERCEDES BENZ has long been at the fore front of premium motoring and its lat est range is no excep tion. My concentra tion here is the C­Class in saloon form. Prices start from €47,290/£39,860 for the Sport model which comes with standard features such as LED lights with adaptive high beam assist, keyless start, navigation with smartphone integra tion, cruise control, auto matic wipers, climate con trol and heated front seats.My test model was at the higher end of the range, the AMG Line Pre mium Plus with diesel power under the bonnet. While it may carry the AMG name the AMG Line versions have all the styling cues, but the me chanical side of things re mains unmolested in terms of power. The 1.9litre diesel in the test car produces 265 hp and being diesel maximum torque is low down from just 18002200rpm. Inside the CClass you would be hard pressed to tell it’s a diesel providing the not inconsid erable accelerative capaci ty. Also the mid 50s fuel economy is impressive for a car of this class. Inside it makes a pleas ant change to find a car, especially a German mod el, that isn’t graced with a surfeit of sombre tones, most often black or grey. Lightening up my test car’s interior, and adding a dash of additional class, were tobacco coloured centre seat panels and matching door cards. With the rest of the interior in darker colours matched to the ex ternal grey paintwork it made for a nice contrast. On the road the C­Class is a refined and smooth drive with plenty of power in reserve should you re quire it. A sleek style, de spite being a saloon, makes for a striking look and doesn’t really compro mise headroom access to the rear as is the case with many rakish saloons. The suspension draws a nice line between being com pliant enough to soak up the bumps but with enough control to deal with twisty tarmac. Add driving modes of Comfort, ECO, Sport, Sport+ and In dividual and you can see why it makes for an exem plary sports saloon. Mercedes has had a rep utation of being slightly more sedate than some ri val German competitors but has more than levelled the field with the C­Class AMG Line models. It’s also a somewhat more individ ual choice with less aggres sive styling, an altogether more subtle approach.

THE Light Prototype Cars (LPC) Championship and Nevada LPC Cup are set to race on the best Iberian tracks over the 20222023 winter season.

The Nevada LPC Cup follows the same format as the LPC Championship but focuses on club and entry­level racing.Intotal, from December to April, nine tracks will be used, and there will be 11 test days, 22 Endurance races of 40 minutes with a mandatory pit stop and the possibility of driver change.Thefirst race of the Nevada LPC Cup season, December 1718, will also be the inaugural race on the Circuito do Sol track. According to the organisers, anyone that becomes a Gold Club Member at Circuito do Sol will gain free entry for Nevada LPC Cup for the entire 2022 ­ 2023 season.
