Linda Hall NINE Los Bandidos runners, including two on holiday from France, travelled to Abla on Saturday August 27. The Mojacar‐based group were taking part in the ninth Circuito de Carreras Populares organised by the Diputacion provincial council. Although advertised as 9.9 kilometres, it was just 9.1 kilometres ac cording to their computers, Los Bandidos’ Karen Ayers said“Theafterwards.one‐lap route on a mixture of terrains was tough, with some very steep climbs and descents and most of us had to walk in places,” Karen admitted.Therace was very well sup ported by the Abla public, with cheering and encourage ment to keep the runners go ing, she added.

THIS year’s procession during Garrucha’s town fi estas honouring San Joaquin surprised many members of the public. The float carrying the saint’s statue would normally have been carried in procession through Garrucha’s streets on the shoulders of the traditional Costaleros. Instead, the much-adorned statue left the Plaza Pedro Gea in an even more traditional ox cart. Speaking afterwards to a local radio inter viewer, Garrucha’s Fiestas councillor Juan Pedro Molina explained that as usual the procession had been organised by the Hermandad del Rocio brotherhood. “This year they decided that San Joaquin would be transported by these marvel lous animals,” Molina said. The councillor also drew attention to the nu merous women and men who had responded to the brotherhood’s request to wear flamenco cos tumes, filling the streets with colour. The town hall originally recommended the flamenco cos tumes some years back, Molina said, and are now a regular feature of the fiestas.

A PROVINCIAL council initiative is introduc ing children in 11 municipalities to games their parents and grandparents played. Car men Belen Lopez, who heads the Diputa cion’s Equality and Family department, ex plained the Playing Past Games in the Present programme offered towns, enjoy able summer activities. “At the same time we want children to learn these simple participation games that awaken the imagination and encourage them to be active,” Lopez said. “It’s so good for families to see their little ones having a great time with the games they once played,” said Maria’s mayor Jose Antonio Garcia. Games included skipping, tag, Un, Dos, Tres, Chocolate Ingles (the Spanish version of Grandma’s Footsteps), Musical Chairs and Tug of War. The project has already visited Al habia, Zurgena, Seron, Alhama de Almeria, Maria, Partaloa, Alcolea and Turre, with Macael, Nacimiento and Mojacar next.

THE Junta de Andalucia is re viewing the proposed restoration project for Seron’s ancient holm oak, La Peana.The Asociacion Monu mental Natural Encina La Peana has outlined the steps that should be taken to save the enormous tree, which is at least 1,300 years old and the largest in Andalucia. Re gional government sources quoted in the Spanish media revealed that the association would receive permission to restore La Peana now that a four‐metre long fissure ‐which was eight centimetres wide ‐ has been stabilised.

SPORT will be on the timetable year-round for pupils at the two primary and infants schools in Albox. Angel Escobar, who heads the Diputacion’s Public Works department, announced that the provincial council has now awarded the contract to cover the sports courts at the Virgen del Saliente and Velazquez schools. Thanks to the covered courts, pupils will be able to practise sport during hot sum mer and cold winter weather while, as Escobar said, they could also use the covered ar eas at “Thisbreaktime.isa€500,000 invest ment that is going to improve Albox’s sports and school in frastructure,” he said. TWO Cuevas del Alamanzora buildings were evacuated during a fire in the early hours of Saturday August 27. Residents had to leave the Calle Bella Dorita apartment block where the fire originated, although families were told to leave an adjacent building when the fire began to spread.

RANSTAD RESEARCH, the number one human resources company in Spain and in the world, has studied the labour market in the primary agri culture sector during the first six months of the year. As part of this study, they have compared statistics with the Public Service of State Em ployment (SEPE) for the last 10 years.

Ranstad emphasised that Andalucia have signed 666,309 agricultural con tracts during the first half of the year, 53.4 per cent of the entire country, making it the community with the highest level of employment in this sector in all of Spain.

MARIO URREA, the presi dent of the CHS (Segura Hy drographic Confederation) has met with the mayor of Cuevas del Almanzora, An tonio Fernández, at the town hall. The meeting, held on Tuesday August 30, was to analyse the state of the boulevards, as well as the solutions for maintenance of their walkways through the districts of Cueva. At the meeting, Antonio Fernandez conveyed his con cern about the state of the boulevards and walkways which pass through the mu nicipality, and the necessary cleaning of them to avoid possible flood damage in the area in the event of floods. Antonio Fernández, gave a very positive assessment of the meeting with Urrea, since “he has always lis tened to Cuevas’ requests, and problems that had been troubling the residents for many years have been solved, as is the case of the boulevards of Muleria and Guazamara, in which almost €1.3 million were invested over two years, which meant the end of a decadeslong problem and the safety of the residents of both dis tricts.

THE town of Adra celebrated its Cante Grande Festival, on Saturday August 27. Just a year after turning half a century, it had Paco Cepero as its main artist, who was accompanied by the fantastic voice and dance of Reme dios Reyes from Chiclana, Julio Romero on guitar and Ramón Rivera, on guitar. Singers, Antonio Reyes and Abderitan Baldomero Cortés ‘El niño de la Gloria’ were present. This concert was part of the musical events or ganised by the Adra Town Council as a prelude to the long­awaited festivities of the town, which are held from September 6 to 10 in honour of its patron saints, the Virgen del Mar and San Nicolás de Tolentino.

THE town council of Vera an nounced on August 29, that it had begun the installation, in the public schools of the mu nicipality, of 27 air condition ing and heating units. This is in line with the commitment made by the Municipal Gov ernment Team, with the par ents and the directors of the educational centres of the lo cality, given the high tempera tures that are registered in certain classrooms with a lot of exposure to the sun. The mayor of Vera, José Carmelo Jorge Blanco, accom panied by the first deputy mayor, Alfonso García, has su pervised the installation work of the equipment in the class rooms, so that they are opera tional on the first day of the start of the school year. San Agustin festivities

THERE were four big rain downpours in the space of five minutes, but they didn’t affect the lively Recinto Ferial de la Vega de Aca on Wednesday August 24, children’s day in Alme ria, which was full of people celebrating the Fe ria of Almeria. In fact, as the night began, every corner offered casetas, like La Pita, which promised to be as iconic as each night of the historic festival so far. Far from deterring the Almerians, the rain drops made no difference to the excitement of the people intent on enjoying their Feria in and out of the gazebos and casetas, on the attrac tions and in the concert venues. And, how could they not be, this night was going to be no exception: the rain didn’t slow down the regular visitors and the venues were totally full, with a lot of tables full of food pre pared by Cristobal Perez and his staff, coming especially from Lebrija.

MOJACAR began its San Agustin festivities on Thurs day August 25, which ran across the whole weekend, finishing on August 28. Before the festival, the town gave a taster to the fes tivities with a football game between CD Mojacar and Cantoria FC, as well as a fla menco performance in the PlazaTheNueva.festival kicked off with a day of digital creative games, followed by a rocket launch and a midday fair. In the evening there was a padel tournament and an open air dance, accompanied by the orchestras ‘Prometida y Melodias’.Therewas a beautiful coro nation for San Agustin’s queen and ladies in waiting, and another open air dance to complete the festivities of the first day. Saturday saw the final stages of the padel tourna ment, as well as perfor mances by music group ‘El Tinglao’. On the Sunday, the celebrations finished with a parade through Mojacar, a musical performance and a firework display. A great time was had by all.

The project, submitted by Nijar’s town council, has been developed by students in year two at ESO who, during the landscape work, will delve into the historical use of the tower in its origins­ with a campfire for warmth and a mir ror system to communicate with others.

THE meteorological situa tion, and especially the ele vated sea water tempera tures during August, have provoked concern amongst Almerians that in the next few months they could see a repeat of the ‘cold front’, now referred to as DANA (Isolated Depression in High Levels of the Atmosphere), a phenomenon that has long been a part of the region’s history.Forty per cent of agricul tural products have been as signed agricultural insurance, according to data collected by the General Director of Fruit and Horticulture.

THE councillor of Environmental Sustain ability, Margarita Cobos, has held meetings with neighbours of Cuevas de los Medina and with works at the Plant for the classifi cation treatment and composting of solid urban waste in Almeria, following a fire which broke out on Tuesday August 23. In the meetings, Cobos informed neigh bours and workers of the circumstances of the fire and explained the fire was practical ly extinguished, her concerns for the conti nuity of the plant, after the warehouses of waste discharge and treatment pits were destroyed.Cobosinformed those present at the meeting that although the plant had suf fered significant damages, “the town coun cil are going to work to restore it to normal ity as soon as possible.” The Area of Environmental Sustainability and conces sion company PreZero are carrying out a preliminary investigation about what hap pened.Meanwhile, the effort to cool and clean the affected zone are ongoing. Fortunately, the fire did not cause any personal damage.

THE town council of Nijar has just implemented a plan to enhance the tower of La Atalaya de la Villa following the guidelines of the student’s project for development. The councillor of Agricul ture, fish, water and rural de velopment for Almeria’s town council, Carmen Cre spo, has encouraged produc ers of fruit and horticulture to get agricultural insurance before the foreseen ‘cold front’ that threatens to arrive at the beginning of Septem ber, coinciding with the high temperatures registered in Mediterranean waters. In statements to the media during her visit to the rural agricultural sites in Adra, the councillor has noted that agricultural insurance is fun damental to guarantee farm ers’ protection ahead of the damages expected from the DANAs.

The students will also explore how the tower was used as a structure of defence and will work to collect more in formation about the structure so that tourists can have a complete picture of its history.

SPAIN’S estimated annual CPI inflation in August has hit 10.4 per cent according to the National Statistic Institute (INE) on Tuesday, August 30. The inflation rates in August, saw a rate four­tenths of a percentage point lower than that recorded in July, but still 10.4 per cent more expensive than in the same period last year. The slight decrease in comparison to July is reportedly due to the fall in fuel prices. On the oth er hand, there was a notable increase in the prices of, among others things, electricity, food, restaurants and package holidays.

The estimated annual rate of change of core inflation (general index excluding unprocessed food and energy products) increased by three­tenths of a percentage point to 6.4 per cent. If confirmed, it would be the highest since January 1993.

A GANG of robbers, posing as Guardia Civil officers has been dismantled in Tenerife.Thefour detainees allegedly had a long criminal record and always acted with great violence. On Monday, August 29, the Guardia Civil confirmed they had recovered more than €240,000 from various thefts.Robbery involving violence, illegal detention and breaking and entering are the main crimes that the four de tainees and four others investigated for these acts are charged with. The investigation began at the begin ning of the year following a violent rob bery, committed in a prestigious com pany located in the south of the island of Tenerife, where the victims were gagged and beaten. THE Guardia Civil located three girls lost dur ing the night after becoming disorientated in the Donana Natural Area, Huelva, Andalucia. Officers were alerted to the plight of three disorientated girls located somewhere in the interior of the Donana Natural Area, be tween Matalascanas and Mazagon, the Guardia Civil confirmed on Sunday, August 28.The Guardia Civil managed to contact one of the girls by phone, so that she could de scribe the area and send the location with her mobile phone. After sending the geolocation, the patrol led the search to the designated point which was already in darkness with hardly any visi bility. The officers were unable to see the girls and deduced that the coordinates of the loca tion had changed due to the weak signal in theAfterarea.inspecting the ground, the officers found fresh footprints and followed them. After approximately half an hour of walking, at midnight, the officers heard the girls’ re sponses to their calls. The girls were rescued during the night.

A PERPETRATOR of identity theft, of Spanish nationality and who has a police record, has allegedly committed the theft of his twin brother’s ID in order to avoid paying traffic fines. He was arrested in Granada, the na tional press reported on August 27. The man had previously lost six points on his brother’s driving licence, after driving a ve hicle under the influence of alcohol. According to the Spanish National Police, in August 2021, the complainant thought he had lost his National Identity Document (DNI) after forgetting his wallet in his brother’s ve hicle, so he renewed it without further ado, until last July when he found it at his father’s home. He discovered that in the early hours of January 15, 2021, he had been reported for driving under the influence of alcohol, and it was this incident that had led to the with drawal of six points on his licence.

FOLLOWING torrential rain and thunderstorms, parts of the Valencian Community, on Saturday, August 27, ex perienced more extreme weather conditions. It is still August, yet the municipali ties Moixent and Fontanars del Alforins were hit with a hailstorm. The ground was temporarily covered in white, with some stones as large as golf balls. A video uploaded onto the AVAMET Twitter ac count by Sara Mico shows the size of the hailstones which fell in the municipali ty of Fontanars dels Alforins in Vall d’Albaida. A yellow warning had been issued by AEMET, the State Meteorological Agen cy on Saturday, warning of storms in the provinces of Valencia and Castellon. Those participating in the pilgrimage pay their respects by praying to a shrine of the virgin of the or chards, a simplistic 16th century building of local architectural tradition, located on the out skirts of the town. Whilst she isn’t the patron saint of Vera, that being Virgen de las Angustias (Virgin of Sor rows) this celebration is still a sight to see, with parades of colourfully decorated horse drawn carriages and loud, traditional Spanish music and dancing. The pilgrimage begins at La Legua in the late afternoon and ends with a show and dancing for everyone to enjoy.

AN Italian man returned from a holiday in Spain and after admit ting himself into hospital, found out that he had contracted three infections at the same time ­ Covid, monkeypox AND HIV. In what is believed to be a medical first, the 36­year­old tested positive for all three illnesses in early July after returning from Spain.Nine days after returning from a trip to Spain, the man went to the emergency room at the Catania hospital, located in the ancient port city on Sicily’s east coast, on July 5. He had devel oped a fever, a sore throat and headache, fatigue and inflamma tion of his groin area. Three days after the first symptoms, the man tested positive for Covid (his second case). Later that afternoon, a rash started to develop on his left arm, which then spread. At the hospital, he tested positive for monkeypox, HIV and coronavirus variant BA.5. On the third day of admission, almost all skin lesions started to turn into scabs and by day five almost all symptoms had re solved. The patient was discharged into home isolation.

It is believed the remains might be that of a sauropod dinosaur which would have stood approxi mately 12 metres tall, and they are currently being studied by an international research team. It all started in 2017 when the owner of a property carrying out construction work noticed the presence of several fragments of fos silised bones in his yard. He subsequently contacted the re search team which carried out its first excavation in that same year.

A 12-YEAR-OLD girl who fell into a hole in an abandoned house in Villanueva de la Torre, Guadalajara, was successfully rescued, as reported on Friday, August 26. The young girl was rescued after falling into a hole in an aban doned house located between Calles San Antonio and Las Peñas in Villanueva de la Torre, Guadalajara. According to local media, sources from the Servicio de Atención y Coordinación de Urgen cias y Emergencias 112 de Castilla­La Mancha said that the inci dent took place after 9.30pm on Thursday, August 25 and that it was the Health Service personnel who pulled her out of the hole, having arrived before the fire brigade on the scene. I NEVER chose to be a noncon formist. Sitting here at 83 years of age and looking back over decisions made when you once again found yourself physically anewed, it is painfully obvious that choosing to remain within society as an ‘anti­so cial’, was, at the very least going to be difficult and certainly not make you the winner of many popularity contests. Of course, at the outset you don’t know who, or even what you are. As a new manifestation you simply go with the flow. There is no set beginning to nonconformity, it is something that just happens. There does however become a point when the choice has to be made. You ei ther drop out or stay in. Well, I (finally) chose to stay in. Al though, through my spiritual lean ings, which were later to become permanent, I was offered a host of escapes, ie, Hippie communes, be coming a Tibetan monk, taking the junkie route, membership of numer ous cults, including the highly dan gerous Scientology and all of its pa thetic offshoots, specifically designed to control the weak, I re alised that to have any chance of in fluencing events in a society I al ready basically didn’t agree with, I simply had to stay a part of it. Politics would have been an obvi ous choice I suppose, but unfortu nately, in my day, to enter into the political arena you had to either be a total conformist, a complete hyp ocrite, or an old boy with connec tions (no change there then!) In my early teens I had already been fortu nate enough to meet my future wife and was actually looking forward to a loving relationship and hopefully a new family. I had always loved the smell of greasepaint and the cre ation of songs ­ so to remain a true member of society, I chose Showbiz. Ha! The most hypocritical occupa tion of them all. Typical examples of this profession that I have never been able to abide are the egotisti cal multi­millionaires who, followed by cameras and hangers on, spend their non creative breaks wandering between mud huts, trying to make us all feel bad and responsible for the ills of the world, before scurrying back to their existence of cosseted grandeur and luxury. While the BoE raised interest rates by 50bps - its largest increase in 27 years - it spooked GBP investors with its accompany ing forecasts as it warned the UK is highly like ly to slip into a recession this year. Sterling then traded sideways for the next couple of weeks, as recession fears, a political leadership vacuum and growing discontent among workers offset bets for another 50bps rate hike from the BoE in September. The GBP selloff then resumed in the sec ond half of the month amid fears over the economic impact of widespread industrial ac tion and warnings UK inflation could climb above 18 per cent. The direction of the pound over the next month may be primarily shaped by the next UK Prime Minister. If the economic policies implemented by Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss aren’t seen as adequate enough to tackle the cost of living crisis, the pound is liable to fall.

It looks as if it’s even too hot for the olive trees to bear high levels of fruit, which means that the price of olive oil will keep rising if there is insufficient to meet demand.

According to TK Home Solutions, four out of every 10 food poisonings originate in vegetable produce. To avoid this, don’t buy fruit from an individual street ven dor, even if their produce does look ap petising. It’s better to buy fruit from a su permarket or controlled food market whose products must pass trace regula tions.Try and avoid stores in which the room temperature is high or where fruits and vegetables are exposed to the sun as this is likely to make them go off quicker. I LOVE dogs - I have a dog - and we sometimes take him with us when we go for a walk and stop for a coffee. Don’t you know that I searched that for an hour before I found hidden somewhere in the ‘contact us’ part a number which I’ve now been holding on for another eternity. I’ll tell you what I want. I want to speak to a human being that not only speaks English, but understands it too and I don’t want it to take four or five hours to do it. What are even more annoying are the companies that you can’t con tact by ‘phone at all. There should be a law that every company that takes the public’s money or holds personal information about them is duty bound to speak to their victims personally just like they did years ago before social media. It is incredible the amount of mega multi-national organisations that just ignore their punters. Here’s one for you. How many of you have bought an aerosol - in my case a mozzie spraybut it’s happened a few times with various sprays that after a few sprays it just packs up? It doesn’t matter how hard you press - nada, nothing. I shake it and can hear that it’s still got plenty left in it. So what do you do? Take it back or just chuck it? They aren’t cheap, about seven or eight euros a pop. I don’t have the receipt, but I feel the need to return it and see what happens. I’ll let you know.

AS with any other country in the world there are many different types of busi nesses here in Spain. Due to a European law passed a few years ago, some people do not need to have a qualification to run some kinds of businesses, that law was called ‘Omnibus’.

THERE are press reports that ‘staycation fatigue’ has resulted in a slump in bookings at domestic hotspots and even the prospect of airport delays and flight cancellations is not stopping people heading abroad. But it’s not ‘staycation fatigue’ at all! It’s things getting back to where they were pre­pandemic. How can you possibly compare last year’s sum mer holidays when there were travel restrictions? The last two years’ holi day statistics shouldn’t be used. Everything needs to be com pared with 2019’s. This shows, too, the lack of any sense of proportion among anxious local councils, National Park Authorities and the Welsh Government. This swing back was inevitable and entirely predictable. Devon and Cornwall were complain ing about too many tourists. The Lake District National Park was planning to close public roads to all but residents. And the Welsh Government want to charge a tourist tax as well as price out holiday lets with taxes. Surely even the daftest person could see that it was a temporary blip, due to the pandemic?

For example, anyone in Spain can be an estate agent, they can be regulated by for example the API (Agente de la Propiedad Inmobiliaria), this is the largest Spanish re al estate organisation. The API title is is sued by the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Environment, after attend ing a training course and passing the quali fication tests. However, it’s completely op tional.You may have noticed the large amount of consultants, experts, advisors and other people that are running business here showing no credentials re their own skills in their trade and without being regulated by any official body. So, if you’re going to instruct someone in Spain to provide a service, do your own due diligence before you instruct them. If possible, instruct a qualified, regulated, in sured professional, someone that has the qualifications recognised in Spain to carry out their trade or profession.

Sweden has its smorgasbord, Russia its blini, Switzerland its roesti, Spain its paella and Syd ney its rock oysters with cracked pepper, all very spe cial. But France had so many unique, irresistible innova tions. There are, of course many other delights which are not the preserve of France, Italy or the Basque Country. Dressed crab in England and smoked eel in Denmark, for ex ample. Shabu­shabu, Kobe beef, sushi and tempura in Japan.Dijon, Bologna and San Se bastian. Tokyo, Singapore and Mexico. Since the 90s I have not eaten at any of these cities, therefore I can only re flect on standards of the past. How are they now? This centu ry, my annual three months in France have been restricted to Provence. The food was good, but not comparable with an earlier era. I have no plans to leave the Iberian Peninsula again, but I do want to make one more trip to San Sebastian. I hope it all lives up to expectations. TASTE OF FRANCE

SADLY, I have spent too little time in the glorious Basque country, where, in San Sebas tian, I enjoyed the best tapas ever. The following day I dined at Arzak, then rated Spain’s top restaurant. I am aware that this region is recognised as being one of the best in the world for food and restau rants, claiming, among others, the best beefsteaks, the best tortilla and the best restau rants.Inthe 60s and 70s, I found France the best country for en joying the most delicious gas tronomic delights. From the 80s I spent more time in Italy which emerged for me as at least its equal. This is partly because of a decline in France and the same may now have taken place in Italy. Much as I also love Indian, Japanese and Chinese cuisines, my most mouth­watering memories are from France in the 70s. And, b***er me, what memories! Oh, pardon my French …. Bisque d’ Homard, Foie gras, Coquille Saint­Jacques, Tarte aux Oignons, Chateaubriand, Coq au Vin, Plateau de Fruits de Mer, Boeuf Bourguignon, Creme Brulé, Crepes Suzettethese were all prepared, cooked and presented to per fection, where appropriate with the wonderful range of sauces accompanying and highlighting the flavours of these epicurean pleasures. Fi nally, there were the crois sants, the pastries, the cheeses and the wines of Burgundy, the Bordeaux reds, Bandol ros es and Alsace whites; the Cog nacs and Calvados. Italy has its pizzas (originally from Nizza when Nice was in Italy), wonderful pasta and sal ads. The perfect balance of herbs, spices, tomatoes, olive oil, chilli, onions and garlic en hances great meat, fish and seafood dishes alike.

I LOVE a good cathedral as much as the next sweaty tourist. Show me an am phitheatre and I am on cloud nine. Af ter a spectacular breakfast at Nellie Gs here in Benavista, armed only with a mobile phone and a sense of optimism, I set off for Ronda. Beautiful, full of charm and history and the most in credible vistas (what on earth pos sessed those ancient folk to build an aqueduct in a gorge a billion miles deep? Breathtaking views but good ness imagine forgetting your spanner). It was a very humid day so the going was tough. Tourists in Ronda work for their vistas as did the poor sods who built the Tajo. I have lived in Spain for nearly 15 years and tend to spend most of my time between Marbella and Gibraltar since moving two years ago from Ali cante. It is safe to say that I saw more of Spain as a tourist from the UK than I do now as a resident, so this weekend I set off to become an incidental tourist of one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

It possesses an incredible exterior with a large sandstone dome, unlike most of Spain’s more Gothic places of worship, it’s constructed of two different coloured stone and nestles like a fat al bino toad on the edge of the coast. In terior wise it is surprisingly and disap pointingly bland (sorry!). That done and ticked off I went to the Roman amphitheatre, blessedly free and a real find. Those Romans cer tainly knew how to build a theatre. Cadiz is a stunning city, busy (difficult to find a parking space) but vibrant and lively, but not really a day trip kind of place.So,where to next? As my return to work looms above my head like a dis approving matriarch, probably closer to home, Benahavis, the Roman spa in Guadalmina perhaps? Or back to Nellie Gs and a quick drink at The Victoria andSoundsAlbert.good to me.

Pensioners are already shivering in Europe, not be cause of the cold as yet, but because of the thought of having to find the money to pay for winter heating and families are having to rely on food banks in order to feed themselves and their children.

AS published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), Spain’s General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) plans to invest just over €17.5 million in 270 new speed control points on the road systems in Spain. Of this total, 150 will be fixed or sec tion radar Specifically,devices.over a period of three years, the DGT aims to install 90 new section radars which will control the speed at two specific points on a road. Another 60 fixed radars will be placed in selected loca tions, and another 120 cabins for radars fixed on posts.

Mercedes planning to sell plant Spain’s speed control devices

WHEN you think of a Ford Mustang it evokes memories of the iconic Ford featured in the film Bullitt. A very American muscle car that even today packs a powerful punch with a 5.0­litre V8 petrol engine. However, there’s a new kind of Mustang prowl ing the roads in the shape of the all­electric Mach­E, a very modern and green in carnation of the traditional Mustang. With prices start ing from €59,357/£50,030 it has become almost as much a cult Ford as its petrol­pow eredThreestablemate.Mach­Emodels are available in standard or ex tended range; rear­wheeldrive, all­wheel­drive dual motor and a performance GT version. In GT form, which was my test model, there’s 487PS on tap and the 0 ­ 62 mph benchmark passes in just 3.7 seconds. There are three drive modes available in cluding a full fat untamed mode. From behind the wheel this astonishingly quick acceleration gives a real sense of drama and, al lied to adaptive suspension, provides an extremely en tertaining drive. It’s also more than capa ble in town which is where any EV is at its best and most practical. As ever the big question with an EV is range. The Mach­E GT will cover between 236 to 310 miles depending on condi tions. Urban driving invari ably means more braking so regenerative energy helps battery charging and hence range. On faster roads such as a dual carriageway or motorway the range doesn’t hold up quite so well. The UK’s charging in frastructure is lacklustre at best, so longer journeys do need to be planned.

The tender announcement for the supply and installation of these radars, published in the BOE indicates the contract is divided into two lots. One is for the roads depen dent on the Traffic Manage ment Centres in the area cen tre, the northwest­Cantabrian and the north; and another for the southwest, southeast, Levante, Pyrenees­Valle del Ebro and the Balearic Islands.

The contract’s administra tive specifications indicate that each of these lots re quires the contracted compa ny to provide 120 cabins for fixed speed cameras, 90 sec tion speedometers, and 45 fixed speed cameras. Eighty per cent of the new radars will be located on con ventional roads, where the highest road accident rate oc curs in Spain. The remaining 20 per cent will be on motorways and du al carriageways. Priced from €86,412/ £72,830 the Mach­E GT comes very well equipped with performance seats, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise, auto lights and wipers, high beam as sist and Bang & Olufsen sound system. A large cen tral screen offers most con trol functions and being Ford it is quite intuitive, and if you have to go digital then Ford generally make life easier.With the number of EVs growing it’s these specialist and more exciting models that will act as halo cars for EV adoption, and the MachE certainly falls into this cat egory. It’s comfortable and a superb drive whether in normal or untamed mode. My only problem, despite almost universal positives, is that the build quality doesn’t quite live up to that very high price tag. It just doesn’t have that certain something that makes a car feel premium. Look at the entry level Mach­E and it makes a much more appeal ing financial proposition.

“Stoke City can confirm that manager Michael O’Neill has left the Club,” the club announced. Joint Chairman John Coates said: “Michael joined us in November 2019 when the Club was in a difficult situation and the job he did in stabilising our position in the Championship should not be underestimated.
