THE 2022 Vuelta a España will pass through Nerja and Maro on Thursday, September 1. The 12th stage of the route will cover 192.7 km of the Mediterranean coast, from Salobreña to Estepona. The cyclists are expected to travel along the old N340 road and Avenida de Pescia at around 1.15pm, so there will be partial or total road closures from 12.45pm to 2pm.The councillor for Safety and Transport, Francisco Arce, has recommended that wherever possible, residents and visitors “should not use their vehicles during these times and if they need to get to an appointment, they should be prepared for how traffic may be affected.”

ON Thursday August 25, three new police officers joined the Local Police of Nerja, having passed the selection process and the introductory course at the Institute of Emergencies and Pub lic Safety of Andalucia (IESPA). THE fish market in the port of Caleta de Velez will un dergo a series of works to make the building more en ergy-efficient, with im provements to the roof, in stallations and airconditioning. The invest ment will be around €580,000 and the works will be carried out sometime be tween September 1, 2023 and September 1, 2024. This is one of the projects that will benefit from the agreement signed by the Spanish government and the Junta de Andalucia to use the European funds to improve public buildings. To be eligible for the grants, the project must achieve a reduction of at least 30 per cent in the building’s overall consump tion of non-renewable ener gy. Also, all phases of the project must include a plan for the management of the waste produced during the construction and demolition works, with at least 70 per cent of the non-hazardous waste generated at the con struction site being recycled and reused.

Once again, this will be the final stage of the Provincial Open‐Water Swim ming Circuit organised by the Provincial Council of Granada. IN July, the municipality of Velez‐Malaga was declared a Zone of Great Tourist Afflu ence (ZGAT) by the Direc torate‐General of Trade of the Junta de Andalucia. This will take effect from September 1 and will allow businesses to open on Sundays and pub lic holidays over Easter and during the summer (from June 1 to September 30). Therefore, everything of fered by the shopping cen tre El Ingenio (including fashion, restaurants and leisure) will be available on all Sundays throughout September. In addition, there will be a special pro motion on these days for customers who make pur chases worth €20 or more, who will get vouchers for shopping, the cinema and Sould Park. THE Department of the Environment of the Nerja Town Hall will improve the recreational picnic and barbecue area of El Pinarillo by replacing the old equipment and purchasing 20 new tables, 40 benches, 50 sections of wooden fencing and 25 litter bins. FROM September 6 to 11, Rincon de la Victoria will host a new edition of its Victorian Anchovy Festi val (Fiesta del Boquerón Victoriano). This year’s programme will include eight live cooking demon strations by top chefs, free anchovy tastings at 70 local restaurants and a market with live music and activities for children organised by the brand Sabor a Málaga.

A GROUP of friends of Lux Mundi, Torre del Mar, recently went on a day trip to the town of Guadix which is situ ated about 50 kms from Granada. On arrival they were met by the En glish‐speaking guide, together with the tourist train which was to take them di rectly up to the area of the cave hous es. The first point of call was the cave church, ‘Ermita de Gracia’, with all its different little rooms and chapels and a beautiful display of nativity scenes from all around the world. Next visit was to the Interpretation Centre/Cave Museum, a treasure trove of how life was in days gone by. The viewpoint, Mirador de la Magdalena, from where could be seen the Moorish alcazaba and the cathedral, was spec tacular with all the whitewashed chim neys of the troglodyte dwellings.

Seaweed threatens coast
THE invasive species of seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae was first detected in Ceuta in 2015, where it is believed to have arrived on huge Japanese cargo ships, and continues to multi ply in the Mediterranean. Since the end of 2018, its presence has been confirmed in the area of the Cliffs of Maro‐Cerro Gordo, shared by the provinces of Malaga and Granada. The seaweed has been wreaking havoc for several years and the local councils have con tinuously asked the Spanish government for help removing it. On August 29, large amounts were found on various beaches in Nerja, and fishermen in Caleta de Velez have also com plained about it and the ‘enormous losses’ it causes by damaging their nets. However, the delegate for Agriculture and Fisheries of the Junta de Andalucia in Malaga, Fernando Fernández, has denied that he has “official proof” of the presence of Rugu lopteryx okamurae on the eastern coast of the province.

For the mayor, the acquisi tion of the new equipment is essential as the current con trol system is outdated and frequently breaks down. “We are going to improve and modernise this central munic ipal car park, which is the one most used by residents and visitors who come to the his toric and commercial centre of Nerja,” he said. He also highlighted the better service that the new machinery will provide to users. All the car park access and exit units will be replaced by machinery equipped with a control sys tem with barriers and num ber plate recognition technol ogy. ON Thursday August 25, technicians from the company awarded the contract for the Al muñecar Municipal Cleaning Service, FCC, de stroyed some 1,500 kilos of illegal goods that had been seized by the Local Police over the last few years and were being stored on the municipal premises, according to the councillor for Security, Francisco Robles Rivas. The merchandise that was removed had been occupying such a large space in the facili ties attached to the Local Police Headquarters that it took two average‐sized load vehicles to transport all of it to be shredded at the waste plant.“There were clothes, trainers, glasses and a lot of merchandise that had been seized on the street. Most of it was abandoned by the sellers when they were caught in the street and some resulted from checks carried out at the street market or on the promenades,” said the coun cillor for Security.

THE Guardia Civil located three girls lost during the night after becoming disorien tated in the Donana Natural Area, Huelva, Andalucia. Officers were alerted to the plight of three disorientated girls located somewhere in the interior of the Donana Natural Area, between Mata lascanas and Mazagon, the Guardia Civil confirmed on Sunday, August 28. The Guardia Civil managed to contact one of the girls by phone, so that she could de scribe the area and send the location with her mobile phone.After sending the geoloca tion, the patrol led the search to the designated point which was already in darkness with hardly any visibility. The offi cers were unable to see the girls and deduced that the co ordinates of the location had changed due to the weak sig nal in the area. After inspecting the ground, the officers found fresh footprints and followed them. After approximately half an hour of walking, at midnight, the officers heard the girls’ responses to their calls. The girls were rescued during the night.

DESPITE announcing in June of this year that Ford Europe was committed to create a new as sembly plant for electric vehi cles in Valencia, according to the press on August 24 the company is now reviewing its European strategy. This means it is putting investment in Spain on hold and it appears although it is still committed to open the factory at some point it has withdrawn its request for financial support from Spain’s EU pandemic relief fund. AFTER suffering from a loss of sales because of import duties imposed by the Trump Administration, it ap pears that demand for Spanish olive oil is going to con tinue to grow thanks to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.Those two countries are major exporters of sunflow er oil which means that consumers have had to look elsewhere and olive oil is a natural alternative, but the very hot summer is affecting production. It looks as if it’s even too hot for the olive trees to bear high levels of fruit, which means that the price of olive oil will keep rising if there is insufficient to meet demand.

The euro has struggled to hold its ground in recent weeks as EUR sentiment has been battered by concerns over Europe’s mount ing energy crisis. Energy prices in Europe skyrocketed in Au gust, with gas prices striking a new record high amid fears that Russia will further reduce gas flows to the continent. The EUR/USD exchange rate dropped back below parity as investors fear the energy price crunch means it is inevitable that the Eurozone will slide into a recession by the end of the Howeveryear. it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the euro. EUR exchange rates found fleeting gains in mid-August on the back of some posi tive GDP figures and a pullback in the US dol lar.Looking ahead, the euro is likely to face an uphill battle so long as Europe remains at risk of a gas shortage this winter. While the BoE raised interest rates by 50bps - its largest increase in 27 years - it spooked GBP investors with its accompany ing forecasts as it warned the UK is highly like ly to slip into a recession this year. Sterling then traded sideways for the next couple of weeks, as recession fears, a political leadership vacuum and growing discontent among workers offset bets for another 50bps rate hike from the BoE in September. The GBP selloff then resumed in the sec ond half of the month amid fears over the economic impact of widespread industrial ac tion and warnings UK inflation could climb above 18 per cent. I NEVER chose to be a noncon formist. Sitting here at 83 years of age and looking back over decisions made when you once again found yourself physically anewed, it is painfully obvious that choosing to remain within society as an ‘antiso cial’, was, at the very least going to be difficult and certainly not make you the winner of many popularity contests. Of course, at the outset you don’t know who, or even what you are. As a new manifestation you simply go with the flow. There is no set beginning to nonconformity, it is something that just happens. There does however become a point when the choice has to be made. You ei ther drop out or stay in. Well, I (finally) chose to stay in. Al though, through my spiritual lean ings, which were later to become permanent, I was offered a host of escapes, ie, Hippie communes, be coming a Tibetan monk, taking the junkie route, membership of numer ous cults, including the highly dan gerous Scientology and all of its pa thetic offshoots, specifically designed to control the weak, I re alised that to have any chance of in fluencing events in a society I al ready basically didn’t agree with, I simply had to stay a part of it. Politics would have been an obvi ous choice I suppose, but unfortu nately, in my day, to enter into the political arena you had to either be a total conformist, a complete hyp ocrite, or an old boy with connec tions (no change there then!) In my early teens I had already been fortu nate enough to meet my future wife and was actually looking forward to a loving relationship and hopefully a new family. I had always loved the smell of greasepaint and the cre ation of songs so to remain a true member of society, I chose Showbiz. Ha! The most hypocritical occupa tion of them all. Typical examples of this profession that I have never been able to abide are the egotisti cal multimillionaires who, followed by cameras and hangers on, spend their non creative breaks wandering between mud huts, trying to make us all feel bad and responsible for the ills of the world, before scurrying back to their existence of cosseted grandeur and luxury. For heaven’s sake give us all a break and stick to your lives of fantasy, where you all belong.Ofcourse, 50 years ago my realisa tion that if you really wanted to de liver and receive widespread opin ions on your points of view, writing was by far the most expedient; so, I have pursued it relentlessly, through a long life that has so far actually been almost yoyo like in its exis tence. One thing nonconformity does achieve however is a relentless thickening of the skin. So, keep those letters coming, the more dominative they are, the more chance you have of being published; and me bothering to listen. Sweden had its smorgasbord, Russia its blini; Switzerland its roesti; Spain its pael la; and Sydney its rock oysters with cracked pepper, all very special. SADLY, I have spent too little time in the glorious Basque Country where, in San Sebastian, I enjoyed the best tapas ever. The following day I dined at Arzak, then rated Spain’s top restaurant. I am aware that this area is rated one of the best in the world for food and restaurants, claim ing, among others, the best beefsteaks, the best tortilla and the best restaurants. In the 60s and 70s, I found France the best country for enjoying the most deli cious gastronomic delights. From the 80s I spent more time in Italy which emerged for me as at least its equal. This is partly because of a decline in France and the same may now have taken place in Italy.

MALAGA Walking Football Club flew a select side to Casablanca, Morroco last weekend. It turned out to be an amazing and emo tional weekend, with the national side showing great hospitality from start to fin ish.Malaga were met by a delegation from the Morro can Walking Football Associ ation at the Hotel, a sight seeing tour then took place, followed by two games which were played with music so loud that even shouting on the pitch could n’t be heard. The games were watched by hundreds in the crowd, and ended with Malaga winning 9‐0 in the first game and narrowly losing the second game 5‐4. Wayne Clark the chairman of Malaga is pictured pre senting a cheque for €400 to a charity for disabled chil dren, an experience that he described as “extremely emotional and humbling.”

The Red Bull driver was simply unbeatable, as proved by Sergio Perez coming home in second place, with both drivers totally dominating the race. By the end of the first lap, Ver stappen had already picked off several others to move into eighth position.
