LA VILLAJOYOSA has opened the application period for municipal aid for the 2021/22 aca demic year. This is for families with children from zero to three years old enrolled in nurs ery schools in La Villajoyosa. The town council of the area, through its Department of Education, has announced a grant for families with children aged zero to three years who, due to their personal, family, economic and/or social circumstances, re quire help with the costs of childcare in local authorised nursery schools. Applications can be submitted through the Electronic Headquarters or in person by ap pointment at the Registry Office until Friday September 16, the town hall confirmed on Monday August 29. The beneficiaries may be the father or mother of the family unit to which the pupil indicated in the application belongs, enrolled in one of the authorised centres of first cycle nursery education in La Villajoyosa. “Hotels cannot pass on to consumers their significantly increased cost of labour, raw materials, food, drink and energy. THE Calpe‐based group have been meeting monthly for a number of years enjoying the company of members, guests and friends. This is the first year that the group have continued to meet in July and August. On Thursday August 25, 15 men arrived promptly at Restaurant Toix in Calpe for aperitifs followed by lunch which included a drink and a shot. The Calpe‐based group chose from four starters, four main courses and a similar number of desserts. The service, as well as the quality of food, was very good and a great time was experi enced by all. No one seemed in a hurry to leave. The Calpe mens’ next meeting will be on September 29. A TOTAL of 320 swimmers participated in the 20th Popular Swimming Crossing in Benidorm, which was won by Miguel Bou, from the town, in his first participation in the race on Sunday, August 28. The 2022 event resumed with the usual route starting from the islet in Benidorm, the town hall confirmed. In 2021, due to the pandemic, the route was altered and, in 2020, the event was can celled. SIX unemployed workers have been given the op portunity to have a 12month work contract with El Campello Town Hall. The city council has hired the workers through the ‘Explus 2022’ Pro gramme of the Generali tat, El Campello Town Hall confirmed on Monday, August 29. As from today, Thurs day, September 1, the chosen six will join the workforce of the city council of El Campello. The six have been hired according to the regulato ry bases of the incentive programme for the hiring of unemployed people by local entities. To manage the partici pation of the city council in the programme, the Economic Development and Employment Area di rected by Marisa Navarro (PP), gave the go­ahead for the hiring of four offi cial painters, an advertis ing and public relations technician and a social in tegration technician. In all cases, it is a tem porary employment con tract with a maximum du ration of 12 months of full­time work.

DENIA coastguards inter cepted a poacher illicitly fish ing in the Cabo de San Anto nio marine reserve on Wednesday August 24. He was spotted by a swimmer who advised life savers on the Trampoli beach who in turn told De nia’s coastguards that a per son had been seen entering the water with a speargun. These are prohibited in the marine reserve, where fish ing is strictly controlled and only traditional methods are allowed.Thecoastguards inter cepted the poacher as he emerged from the water carrying a grouper, a striped seabream, two seabream and the speargun. All were impounded, although the fish were sent to the Ex tiende tu Mano (Reach Out) charity for the homeless. The poacher insisted that he was unaware of the ban on fishing with a speargun but now faces a fine.

BENITACHELL is to recover dry stone walls to protect cul tural and architectural heritage. The aim is to raise aware ness of this heritage element through cultural and educa tional tourism routes. The town hall of El Poble Nou de Benitachell is deter mined to protect its cultural and architectural heritage at all costs it confirmed on Monday, August 29. One of the most characteristic elements of the rural landscape of the municipality ­ iand, in general, of all the villages of the Marina Alta ­ is the dry stone wall fea tures.The project includes not only the recovery and restora tion of the existing dry stone walls, which are in a state of deterioration due to the abandonment of crops and lack of maintenance, but also the olive trees, carob trees and vines that still remain on these terraces. Informative panels will also be installed to explain the dry stone technique, the traditional farming of the area and the importance of its conservation.

THE Guardia Civil arrested the mem bers of a criminal gang in Spain who were scamming holiday home owners of properties for short term rentals in Villajoyosa, it was reported on Wednesday August 24. The operation began when the Guardia Civil became aware of a holi day home owner in Alicante, who was being extorted by the guests of his holi day home, who had occupied the prop erty and were demanding €14,000. During the course of the investiga tion, the officers discovered that this was not an isolated case, but rather a scheme. The gang located holiday homes for short term rentals and contacted the owners posing as a family interested in spending a weekend or several days. Once they occupied the property, they refused to leave or to pay any fees for the use of the property. They then threatened the owners in exchange for very large sums of money, telling them that if they paid them, they would leave and their house would not be damaged.

‘Gaming Benidorm Fest’ was a free event. The event was held throughout August on the 6th, 7th, 27th and 28th outside the Youth Information Centre, in the Plaza de SS MM Los Reyes de Espana in Benidorm.

SPAIN’S estimated annual CPI inflation in August has hit 10.4 per cent according to the National Statistic Institute (INE) on Tuesday, August 30. The inflation rates in August, saw a rate four‐tenths of a percentage point lower than that recorded in July, but still 10.4 per cent more expensive than in the same period last year. The slight decrease in comparison to July is reportedly due to the fall in fuel prices. A GANG of robbers, posing as Guardia Civil officers has been dismantled in Tenerife. The four detainees allegedly had a long criminal record and always acted with great violence. On Monday, August 29, the Guardia Civil confirmed they had recovered more than €240,000 from various thefts. Robbery involving violence, illegal de tention and breaking and entering are the main crimes that the four detainees and four others investigated for these acts are charged with.

A 22-YEAR-OLD female is reported to be in hospital in the Spanish city of Valladolid after being gored by a bull on Saturday, August 27. The incident oc curred during the an nual bull run festival in the Castile and Leon municipality of Alde mayor de San Martin, held in honour of a lo cal patron saint. The streets of the town were packed full of excited residents and tourists alike, all celebrating the ‘run ning of the bulls’. It is believed that the injured party stepped out into the route the bulls were taking, caus ing one of them to de cide to attack her. Sev eral men who were in the crowd reportedly attempted to distract the bull from attacking the woman, but the beast ignored them and gored her as she tried to escape.

A WOMAN was reportedly caught red‐handed in the Ourense municipality of Amoeiro in possession of igni tion tablets and a lighter with the alleged intention to start a forest fire. This was revealed by the Forest Fire Investiga tion Unit (UIFO) of the Min istry of Rural Affairs on Satur day, August According27.to the Xunta of Galicia, UIFO officers had al ready established a surveil lance operation for several days in the Trasalba parish of that municipality. This had been initiated after detecting the existence of arson activity. With the collaboration of the Miño‐Arnoia Forestry Dis trict staff, traces of incendiary devices and ignition tablets were found in all seven fires registered in the area since August 13. The Xunta of Galicia has warned that when it is proven that a fire was caused deliber ately, the guilty party will pay for everything, with prison sentences, and using their own assets. Culprits will not go unpunished they insisted.

• When a divorced person dies… does the ex‐spouse have any rights to the inheritance? Is there any legal obligation to leave something to the sur viving ex‐spouse? The answer is clear. No. Once the separa tion, annulment or divorce has been formalised, there is no le gal obligation to include the former spouse in the Will. What if the deceased spouse was included in the Will? Would he/she continue to be a beneficiary of the succession? According to the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court, not at all. Such a notorious change as a separation, divorce or annul ment should be interpreted as sufficient to exclude the former spouse from the succession. However, to avoid unpleasant and difficult situations (such as the Notary having to demand a waiver to the ex‐spouse) we al ways recommend our clients to grant a new Will after a di vorce.

WE have already discussed in previous articles the impor tance of making a Will and es tablishing clearly how you want to deal with your assets when you pass away. It simpli fies the procedure of the inheri tance for the heirs. THE Guardia Civil located three girls lost dur ing the night after becoming disorientated in the Donana Natural Area, Huelva, Andalucia. Officers were alerted to the plight of three disorientated girls located somewhere in the interior of the Donana Natural Area, be tween Matalascanas and Mazagon, the Guardia Civil confirmed on Sunday, August 28.The Guardia Civil managed to contact one of the girls by phone, so that she could de scribe the area and send the location with her mobile phone. After sending the geolocation, the patrol led the search to the designated point which was already in darkness with hardly any visi bility. The officers were unable to see the girls and deduced that the coordinates of the loca tion had changed due to the weak signal in theAfterarea.inspecting the ground, the officers found fresh footprints and followed them. After approximately half an hour of walking, at midnight, the officers heard the girls’ re sponses to their calls. The girls were rescued during the night.

Guardia Civil rescues girls

A PERPETRATOR of identity theft, of Spanish nationality and who has a police record, has allegedly committed the theft of his twin brother’s ID in order to avoid paying traffic fines. He was arrested in Granada, the na tional press reported on August 27. The man had previously lost six points on his brother’s driving licence, after driving a ve hicle under the influence of alcohol. According to the Spanish National Police, in August 2021, the complainant thought he had lost his National Identity Document (DNI) after forgetting his wallet in his brother’s ve hicle, so he renewed it without further ado, until last July when he found it at his father’s home. He discovered that in the early hours of January 15, 2021, he had been reported for driving under the influence of alcohol, and it was this incident that had led to the with drawal of six points on his licence.

The granting of Gibraltar’s city status comes after the UK government undertook immense research in the National Archives discovering that the City of Gibraltar was granted city status by Queen Victoria in 1842, but was omitted from the list of recognised cities. THE Philippines will be eligi ble for over 99 per cent duty free access of total exported goods to the UK via the De veloping Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS), as reported on Thursday, August 24. The new UK scheme for which the Philippines will be eligible comes under a new trading framework that will replace the UK Generalised Scheme of Preferences (GSP) and will come into force in early 2023. Duty free exports to the UK Solar farm

LONDON STANSTED has received planning per mission from the Secre tary of State for the de velopment of an airport solar farm, it announced on Thursday, August 25. The 14.3MW solar farm will be on land al ready owned by Stansted immediately to the east of the airport at High House Farm. The devel opment is designed to meet the airport’s cur rent and increasing elec tricity demands, including from the growing use of electric vehicles, and is in keeping with the airport’s commitment to make its operations net zero car bon by no later than 2038. The project will be supported by the imple mentation of additional screening measures such as planting new trees, hedgerow reinstatement and new hedgerows. AS reported by media sources, on Wednesday, August 24, the 25­metre­long skeleton of what could possibly be the largest dinosaur to be found in Europe has been uncovered in a back yard in the city of Pombal, in the Leiria District of central Portu gal. It is believed the remains might be that of a sauropod di nosaur which would have stood approximately 12 metres tall, and they are currently being studied by an international re search team. It all started in 2017 when the owner of a proper ty carrying out construction work noticed the presence of sev eral fragments of fossilised bones in his yard. He subsequently contacted the research team which carried out its first excava tion in that same year.

A 19-YEAR-OLD woman reportedly died from Covid after a Greek military warship was quaran tined in the port of Naples. The woman was ad mitted to the Ospedale del Mare in Naples, on Wednesday, August 24, and died during the night, it was reported on Thursday August 25. Two other soldiers were then admitted in iso lation to the Cotugno hospital, with their vital signs kept under constant monitoring, but their lives were reportedly not in danger. The military warship, flying the Greek flag and coming from Turkey, was put under Covid quar antine in Naples following a decision made by the Maritime, Air and Border Health Office of the Ministry of Health. The reasons behind the quar antine are unclear, and an emergency meeting was held in the government offices, due to con cerns about an outbreak of Covid on board.

A POLISH school textbook has been recalled by the publisher and edited after critics inter preted a controversial passage to suggest that IVF babies are undeserving of love. The first edition of the book, entitled ‘His tory and Present’ caused controversy with the author’s description of human fertility treatment, such as IVF, as an “increasingly sophisticated method(s) of separating sex from love and fertility.” Allegedly, this leads to sex being treated as “entertainment and fertility as human production, one could say breeding” according to a media source. Whilst the textbook, which is part of a new government‐backed curriculum due to be rolled out this year, never actually uses the term IVF (IN‐vitro Fertilisation), many people interpreted this description of ‘in creasingly sophisticated methods’ as such, which led them to question ‘who will love the children thus produced’ from these fer tilisation methods.

A 12-YEAR-OLD girl who fell into a hole in an aban doned house in Villanue va de la Torre, Guadala jara, was successfully rescued, as reported on Friday, August 26. Black Hornet mini-drone

NORWAY and Great Britain are joining forces to acquire the Norwegian micro‐drone Black Hor net as a donation to Ukraine, the Norwegian government announced on Wednesday, August 24.The package includes Black Hornet units, spare parts, transportation and training. It’s not all completely friendly as the world’s largest exporter of citrus fruit, Spain has been blocking imports into the EU from its nearest rival South Africa saying that it fears the import ed fruit may contain false codling moths, which are native to sub‐Saharan Africa. Fruit worth an esti mated 650 million rand (€38.5 million approxi mately) has been held at point of entry forcing the South African gov ernment to complain to the World Trade Organi sation about what it considers unfair treat ment.

The direction of the pound over the next month may be primarily shaped by the next UK Prime Minister. I NEVER chose to be a noncon formist. Sitting here at 83 years of age and looking back over decisions made when you once again found yourself physically anewed, it is painfully obvious that choosing to remain within society as an ‘anti‐so cial’, was, at the very least going to be difficult and certainly not make you the winner of many popularity contests. Of course, at the outset you don’t know who, or even what you are. As a new manifestation you simply go with the flow. There is no set beginning to nonconformity, it is something that just happens. There does however become a point when the choice has to be made. You ei ther drop out or stay in. Well, I (finally) chose to stay in. Al though, through my spiritual lean ings, which were later to become permanent, I was offered a host of escapes, ie, Hippie communes, be coming a Tibetan monk, taking the junkie route, membership of numer ous cults, including the highly dan gerous Scientology and all of its pa thetic offshoots, specifically designed to control the weak, I re alised that to have any chance of in fluencing events in a society I al ready basically didn’t agree with, I simply had to stay a part of it. Politics would have been an obvi ous choice I suppose, but unfortu nately, in my day, to enter into the political arena you had to either be a total conformist, a complete hyp ocrite, or an old boy with connec tions (no change there then!) In my early teens I had already been fortu nate enough to meet my future wife and was actually looking forward to a loving relationship and hopefully a new family. I had always loved the smell of greasepaint and the cre ation of songs ‐ so to remain a true member of society, I chose Showbiz. Ha! The most hypocritical occupa tion of them all. Typical examples of this profession that I have never been able to abide are the egotisti cal multi‐millionaires who, followed by cameras and hangers on, spend their non creative breaks wandering between mud huts, trying to make us all feel bad and responsible for the ills of the world, before scurrying back to their existence of cosseted grandeur and luxury. For heaven’s sake give us all a break and stick to your lives of fantasy, where you all belong.Ofcourse, 50 years ago my realisa tion that if you really wanted to de liver and receive widespread opin ions on your points of view, writing was by far the most expedient; so, I have pursued it relentlessly, through a long life that has so far actually been almost yo‐yo like in its exis tence. One thing nonconformity does achieve however is a relentless thickening of the skin. I LOVE dogs - I have a dog - and we sometimes take him with us when we go for a walk and stop for a coffee. He sits there very quietly look ing at everyone going past in the hope that they have a sausage or a bit of chicken. He usually has a drink of water and that’s it. For me, that is acceptable.Whatisn’t is if your dog is a ‘yapper’ - usually a tiny little thing that barks at every single per son that walks past and wants to fight every dog regardless of size. Yap, yap, yap non-stop. If that’s your dog do me a favour and leave it at home. I don’t need to hear it or you telling it to stop. It’s a nuisance and it’s annoying everyone. If I’m on the ‘phone to a helpline the last thing I need to hear is a message every few min utes for the first half hour that I should check your website to see if my problem can be solved there. Don’t you know that I searched that for an hour before I found hidden somewhere in the ‘contact us’ part a number which I’ve now been holding on for another eternity. I’ll tell you what I want. I want to speak to a human being that not only speaks English, but understands it too and I don’t want it to take four or five hours to do it. What are even more annoying are the companies that you can’t con tact by ‘phone at all. There should be a law that every company that takes the public’s money or holds personal information about them is duty bound to speak to their victims personally just like they did years ago before social media. It is incredible the amount of mega multi-national organisations that just ignore their punters. Here’s one for you. How many of you have bought an aerosol - in my case a mozzie spraybut it’s happened a few times with various sprays that after a few sprays it just packs up? It doesn’t matter how hard you press - nada, nothing. I shake it and can hear that it’s still got plenty left in it. So what do you do? Take it back or just chuck it? THERE are press reports that ‘staycation fatigue’ has resulted in a slump in bookings at domestic hotspots and even the prospect of airport delays and flight cancellations is not stopping people heading abroad. The last two years’ holi day statistics shouldn’t be used. Everything needs to be com pared with 2019’s. This shows, too, the lack of any sense of proportion among anxious local councils, National Park Authorities and the Welsh Government. This swing back was inevitable and entirely predictable. Devon and Cornwall were complain ing about too many tourists. The Lake District National Park was planning to close public roads to all but residents. And the Welsh Government want to charge a tourist tax as well as price out holiday lets with taxes. Surely even the daftest person could see that it was a temporary blip, due to the pandemic?

Tamsin Brown CAMPING is a great experi ence and an ideal way of disconnecting from the stress of everyday life, but being in an uncontrolled natural environment means that you will need to be prepared and think about your Remembersafety.that camping laws vary from country to country. Firstly, set up your tent on flat and stable ground that is well away from the sea or river bank. Consider the wind when pitching your tent. If there is a strong breeze, you will need to pitch your tent up wind to stop it from being blown over. Do not camp in prohibitedEstablishedsites.camping ar eas are minimally super vised by the authorities and are theoretically safe spaces, so you should fol low the rules and limit your self to these areas. It is dan gerous to build campfires. A portable gas cooker is a much better choice, as a campfire could get out of control and cause a fire. If you do decide to have a campfire, at least try to keep it away from the tents. Be prepared and always carry a basic first aid kit, a mobile phone with a charged battery, a compass, a map of the area with the nearest villages on it, a sup ply of non‐perishable food (eg canned food) and plenty of water to keep you hy drated.Finally, stay in a group and avoid exploring alone. As a precautionary mea sure, always inform a family member or friend of where you are going and when you plan to return.

AS with any other country in the world there are many different types of busi nesses here in Spain. BEING a woman of a certain age comes with many difficulties not the least of which is the diminishing of hormones. These hormones ordinarily help keep us balanced (mostly) and their slow and in evitable demise creates a void into which anxiety, depression and madness swirl around like demented feral cats on heat. This hormonal void becomes filled with the above (especially cats) and a plethora of other emotions; anger, fear, sadness and grumpiness. Our normal personality begins to adapt to the lack and creates within this lack a new personality which teeters on the precipice of either grumpiness, snarliness or uncontrollable weeping. The invisibility that comes with age does not protect us as friends and family begin to notice the once friendly, humorous, aunt, sister, mother or friend has suddenly turned into an un kempt and miserable beast who cares only for Prosecco and cats. In order to not fall into the cat lady abyss I have been walking and swimming every day. Partly to help with maintaining a healthy weight but also to release those endorphins promised by personal trainers and dieticians. It is true that 20 lengths does fill one with a sense of achievement. The walk home from the pool is a joy (even in this heat) and there is a definite height ening of mood post swim. Unfortunately the menopause hangs around like an unwelcome guest, at times quiet and respectful and at other times a complete bitch who eats all your food, drinks all the gin and will not go home. A good sense of self is important to all human beings. Who we are, what makes us tick is something that it can take a life time to explore and to grow comfortable with. It used to worry me that I was unso ciable, but now I care not a jot for what anyone thinks of me. I say no with alacrity, return food and complain about poor ser vice like a real hard ass. You don’t have to like me but you do have to listen to me and bring me the correct meal. So when menopause hits and stirs your brain with its wooden spoon of anxiety and hot flashes it can be quite distressing to no longer be the person you thought you were. Crying in public, burning puce and sweating buckets even in winter. It’s like demon possession but without the aid of an exorcist (and here in Spain the power of HRT does not compel us). So I, like many other women, self medi cate with exercise and Prosecco and hope that the snarling demon leaves us before we completely isolate all our friends and family and before our heads spin uncon trollably on our sweaty necks. Swim away and let those endorphins run free.

Ford Mach-E GT - a real sense of drama

WHEN you think of a Ford Mustang it evokes memories of the iconic Ford featured in the film Bullitt. A very American muscle car that even today packs a powerful punch with a 5.0‐litre V8 petrol engine. However, there’s a new kind of Mustang prowl ing the roads in the shape of the all‐electric Mach‐E, a very modern and green in carnation of the traditional Mustang. With prices start ing from €59,357/£50,030 it has become almost as much a cult Ford as its petrol‐pow eredThreestablemate.Mach‐Emodels are available in standard or ex tended range; rear‐wheel‐drive, all‐wheel‐drive dual motor and a performance GT version. In GT form, which was my test model, there’s 487PS on tap and the 0 ‐ 62 mph benchmark passes in just 3.7 seconds. There are three drive modes available in cluding a full fat untamed mode. From behind the wheel this astonishingly quick acceleration gives a real sense of drama and, al lied to adaptive suspension, provides an extremely en tertaining drive. It’s also more than capa ble in town which is where any EV is at its best and most practical. As ever the big question with an EV is range. The Mach‐E GT will cover between 236 to 310 miles depending on condi tions. Urban driving invari ably means more braking so regenerative energy helps battery charging and hence range. On faster roads such as a dual carriageway or motorway the range doesn’t hold up quite so well. The UK’s charging in frastructure is lacklustre at best, so longer journeys do need to be planned.

Priced from €86,412/ £72,830 the Mach‐E GT comes very well equipped with performance seats, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise, auto lights and wipers, high beam as sist and Bang & Olufsen sound system. A large cen tral screen offers most con trol functions and being Ford it is quite intuitive, and if you have to go digital then Ford generally make life easier.With the number of EVs growing it’s these specialist and more exciting models that will act as halo cars for EV adoption, and the Mach‐E certainly falls into this cat egory. It’s comfortable and a superb drive whether in normal or untamed mode. My only problem, despite almost universal positives, is that the build quality doesn’t quite live up to that very high price tag. It just doesn’t have that certain something that makes a car feel premium. Look at the entry level Mach‐E and it makes a much more appeal ing financial proposition.
