THE Estepona Council is de lighted with the fact that it has now opened the first part of its planned pedes trianisation of the seafront at a cost of €1.5 million. After cutting the ribbon to officially open the sec tion of the Avenida de Es paña between Avenida Car los I and Calle Terraza on August 29, Mayor José María García told a large crowd taking part in the ceremony that this is a pio neering initiative. He believes it places Es tepona at the forefront of sustainable communities, which are committed to quality of life, the wellbe ing of residents and visi tors, the environment and plenty of open spaces for pedestrians.Additional work is al ready underway on Aveni da de España, in the sec tion next to the Lighthouse and will extend from there to meet up with the new pedestrian area. For many this is good news, but for those want ing to drive from one side of the main town to the port or back, the route has become far longer and more difficult to undertake.

ON Monday, August 29, it was reported that Joaquin Gallardo, a young man from Malaga, had a lucky escape thanks to his loyal dog and companion, Tanka. While out walking his pet in Rincon de la Victoria, Joaquin fell down a sinkhole. According to Joaquin, he was on his mobile phone speaking with his mother when Tanka chased after a cat. As he pursued her, he suddenly fell down a hole in the ground that was around 10metres deep. The well was full of water that reached almost to his neck. After around six hours in the water, rescue arrived. The pet own er admitted that he owes his life to Tanka because for the whole time, she never left him and kept barking continuously.

Resident’s plea NEW Mijas resident Carina Bolling has written to the mayor of Mijas Josele González Pérez with a plea to make life quieter, safer and more environmentally friend ly.In her letter, she explains that she and her family have just moved to El Faro from a city, hoping to find peace and serenity.Instead, they are disturbed by the noise the A7/N340 motorway makes, so she asks that the mayor implement sound absorption measures along the road and also ar range to reduce the speed limit by at least 20 kmh in or der to dramatically reduce air and noise pollution and make Mijas the envy of neighbour ing municipalities as more residents are attracted to Mi jas.Whilst the sentiment ex pressed may be supported by many who live in the area, any decision on implementa tion and funding will have to be made by the Junta de An dalucia and national govern ment.

DEEP SEA FISHING: Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers.

Rescuers arrived at the scene to see what the animal was making so much noise about. Luckily, Joaquin survived with just minor in juries.Tanka became Joachin’s pet after he found her abandoned in a field one year ago, when she was a barely 15dayold puppy. He took the neglected animal home, and probably saved her life, and now, one year later, it appears Tanka has done the same for Joaquin.

ACCORDING to data provid ed on Monday, August 29, by the Malaga College of Nurs ing, Malaga has the lowest ra tio of nurses per inhabitant in all of Spain. Andalucia is just one place above in the penul timate position.

“All these repairs and replacements of some elements were necessary. I hope that we can enjoy an area free of dangers due to its lack of maintenance for so many years,” commented the councillor for Sports, Ramon Alcaide.

Faced with this deficit, the Andalucian Council of Nursing Colleges already warned in mid‐June that the region is “far behind what the quality standards of the World Health Organisation, which plays to the detriment of the health of Andalucian citi zens.” Due to this shortage of professionals, the summer holidays of many nurses, and the throes of the pandemic, everyone who has finished their degree this year has a job. Fewer than 200 students made this transition; about 140 from the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Univer sity of Malaga, and almost 60 from the Escuela de Ronda.

So I said to her: “Where is she? Where is she, I’m going to pick her up? ). Here, Age in Spain volunteer Kelli Field describes the adventure in taking a Spanish driving test. You close your eyes. Imagine living in the Cos ta del Sol in Spain. You’re driving a red con vertible along the blue waters of the Med. Hold on! Living and driving in Spain means you need a Spanish driving licence. And a driving licence means you need Span ish. Cue indigestion. You say to yourself and all your friends, “Pfft. I’ve been driving for years! I could do it with my eyes closed.” But, alas, not recom mended in Spain ‐ or anywhere else. And you’ll learn this after taking online practice tests for taking your Spanish Driving Theory Test. Will there be dou ble negatives, contra dicting answers, a mind‐numbing number of utterances of ‘Wait, What?’, and swearing ‐ a lot of swearing! But before you sched ule your theory test, you’ll need to pass a psy chological test, where they ask you, ‘Are you sad?’ When you say ‘No,’ they say ‘Ok,’ you passed. The video game portion of the physical fitness evaluation for hand‐eye coordination seems useless. But, after you’ve driven here, through small villages with dogs, triple‐double parking on a one‐lane road, a Pelaton on the roadside, you realise this is actually a training ses sion to keep you alive. The in‐car skills train ing begins after you pass your theory test at any autoescuela of your choice. If you speak only Ingles, it would be pru dent to find one that can train you in your native tongue. You’ll learn words like las glorietas which are less than glori ous. And simple izquier da (left) and derecho (right). Soon after, your instructor will schedule your test, the scoring of which will be opaque and obtuse. But, with your years behind the wheel? SO the time you have wished and hoped for has finally ar rived, your child is leaving home to go to university. They have been your daily fo cus for the last 18 years and now they are spreading their wings. Although you’ve been aware this day is coming and spoken about the move, when the day actually comes, some parents can find it in credibly difficult. Some feeling redundant, almost a sense of loss. That room is now empty and you find yourself left with a mixture of feelings. There is the excitement for what’s ahead new friendships, new opportunities, but they are weighed down with the fear of what might go wrong. The worry of how will they cope? There’s an immense sense of pride which is shad owed by the sadness. So many emotions, and I guess the feeling that your role as a parent has now been thrown into the air. You hope you have done all you can to pre pare them, but will it be enough.Thankfully nowadays with technology we are never real ly far away so at least you feel secure in knowing that you have that. However, as your son or daughter embarks on their new chapter you have to allow them find their feet. So daily calls may be every cou ple of days, and that’s ok. They are enjoying them selves, making new friend ships. They haven’t forgotten you they are just finding their way. And each call that they do make, the last thing they want to hear is that you are struggling without them. It’s also a good idea to plan to visit them during the term. PLAN do not just turn up un expected, and give them a bit of time to settle, to find their feet before you make a visit. It’s something for you both to look forward to and should be an enjoyable time, not something that they dread because you are still strug gling. Be happy for them.

AFTER suffering from a loss of sales because of import duties imposed by the Trump Administration, it ap pears that demand for Spanish olive oil is going to con tinue to grow thanks to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Those two countries are major exporters of sunflow er oil which means that consumers have had to look elsewhere and olive oil is a natural alternative, but the very hot summer is affecting production. It looks as if it’s even too hot for the olive trees to bear high levels of fruit, which means that the price of olive oil will keep rising if there is insufficient to meet demand.

The EUR/USD exchange rate dropped back below parity as investors fear the energy price crunch means it is inevitable that the Eurozone will slide into a recession by the end of the Howeveryear. it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the euro. EUR exchange rates found fleeting gains in mid-August on the back of some posi tive GDP figures and a pullback in the US dol lar.Looking ahead, the euro is likely to face an uphill battle so long as Europe remains at risk of a gas shortage this winter. Although anoth er 50bps rate hike from the European Central Bank (ECB) at its next policy meeting could help to cap losses in the single currency.

While the BoE raised interest rates by 50bps - its largest increase in 27 years - it spooked GBP investors with its accompany ing forecasts as it warned the UK is highly like ly to slip into a recession this year. Sterling then traded sideways for the next couple of weeks, as recession fears, a political leadership vacuum and growing discontent among workers offset bets for another 50bps rate hike from the BoE in September. The GBP selloff then resumed in the sec ond half of the month amid fears over the economic impact of widespread industrial ac tion and warnings UK inflation could climb above 18 per cent. The direction of the pound over the next month may be primarily shaped by the next UK Prime Minister. If the economic policies implemented by Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss aren’t seen as adequate enough to tackle the cost of living crisis, the pound is liable to fall.

I NEVER chose to be a noncon formist. Sitting here at 83 years of age and looking back over decisions made when you once again found yourself physically anewed, it is painfully obvious that choosing to remain within society as an ‘anti‐so cial’, was, at the very least going to be difficult and certainly not make you the winner of many popularity contests. Of course, at the outset you don’t know who, or even what you are. As a new manifestation you simply go with the flow. There is no set beginning to nonconformity, it is something that just happens. There does however become a point when the choice has to be made. You ei ther drop out or stay in. Well, I (finally) chose to stay in. Al though, through my spiritual lean ings, which were later to become permanent, I was offered a host of escapes, ie, Hippie communes, be coming a Tibetan monk, taking the junkie route, membership of numer ous cults, including the highly dan gerous Scientology and all of its pa thetic offshoots, specifically designed to control the weak, I re alised that to have any chance of in fluencing events in a society I al ready basically didn’t agree with, I simply had to stay a part of it. Politics would have been an obvi ous choice I suppose, but unfortu nately, in my day, to enter into the political arena you had to either be a total conformist, a complete hyp ocrite, or an old boy with connec tions (no change there then!) In my early teens I had already been fortu nate enough to meet my future wife and was actually looking forward to a loving relationship and hopefully a new family. I had always loved the smell of greasepaint and the cre ation of songs ‐ so to remain a true member of society, I chose Showbiz. Ha! The most hypocritical occupa tion of them all. Typical examples of this profession that I have never been able to abide are the egotisti cal multi‐millionaires who, followed by cameras and hangers on, spend their non creative breaks wandering between mud huts, trying to make us all feel bad and responsible for the ills of the world, before scurrying back to their existence of cosseted grandeur and luxury. For heaven’s sake give us all a break and stick to your lives of fantasy, where you all belong.Ofcourse, 50 years ago my realisa tion that if you really wanted to de liver and receive widespread opin ions on your points of view, writing was by far the most expedient; so, I have pursued it relentlessly, through a long life that has so far actually been almost yo‐yo like in its exis tence. One thing nonconformity does achieve however is a relentless thickening of the skin. So, keep those letters coming, the more dominative they are, the more chance you have of being published; and me bothering to listen. Property in Malaga City

ALTHOUGH nearby beach resorts Marbel la, Torremolinos and Nerja have become increasingly popular for property in vestors, Malaga, the gateway to southern Spain and the Costa del Sol, and the place voted the best city for foreign residents to live and work last year, hasn’t lost its charm.Having recently re‐established itself as one to watch on the international tourism scene, the dynamic city of Mala ga is once again a great place to buy in Spain.Unlike Marbella and Estepona, Malaga doesn’t just boast apartments or villas which are typical along the coast. As Spain’s sixth largest city, potential prop erty buyers can choose from antique city centre apartments or larger houses in the secluded hills east of the city. In terms of investment, city centre properties tend to retain their value far better than beachside apartments and in Malaga you can take your pick from buy‐to‐let properties, short term or long‐term rents. If you don’t mind swapping the sound of the sea for the electric buzz of the city centre, this could work in your favour.

ARE you a property owner and you’re not sure whether it’s better to rent out your property furnished or unfurnished. When it comes to renting out a flat, both options have pros and cons. Choosing furniture for a rental flat is no easy task, and to make a property look enticing for potential renters, it usually requires a signifi cant investment of your time and money to make it so. By having furniture in your prop erty, it’ll look ready to be lived in, making potential renters feel more at home when they look around. However, it also means that your flat is more likely to have a high turnover as people can move straight in and live there for as long as they need before moving on. Furniture also adds value to your property. So, it’s a one‐time invest ment for you that could be benefi cial in the long run.

YOU’VE EVER HAD?

I LOVE dogs - I have a dog - and we sometimes take him with us when we go for a walk and stop for a coffee. He sits there very quietly look ing at everyone going past in the hope that they have a sausage or a bit of chicken. He usually has a drink of water and that’s it. For me, that is acceptable.Whatisn’t is if your dog is a ‘yapper’ - usually a tiny little thing that barks at every single per son that walks past and wants to fight every dog regardless of size. Yap, yap, yap non-stop. If that’s your dog do me a favour and leave it at home. I don’t need to hear it or you telling it to stop. It’s a nuisance and it’s annoying everyone. If I’m on the ‘phone to a helpline the last thing I need to hear is a message every few min utes for the first half hour that I should check your website to see if my problem can be solved there. Don’t you know that I searched that for an hour before I found hidden somewhere in the ‘contact us’ part a number which I’ve now been holding on for another eternity. I’ll tell you what I want. I want to speak to a human being that not only speaks English, but understands it too and I don’t want it to take four or five hours to do it. What are even more annoying are the companies that you can’t con tact by ‘phone at all. There should be a law that every company that takes the public’s money or holds personal information about them is duty bound to speak to their victims personally just like they did years ago before social media. It is incredible the amount of mega multi-national organisations that just ignore their punters. Here’s one for you. How many of you have bought an aerosol - in my case a mozzie spraybut it’s happened a few times with various sprays that after a few sprays it just packs up? It doesn’t matter how hard you press - nada, nothing. I shake it and can hear that it’s still got plenty left in it. So what do you do? Take it back or just chuck it? They aren’t cheap, about seven or eight euros a pop. I don’t have the receipt, but I feel the need to return it and see what happens. I’ll let you know.

THERE are press reports that ‘staycation fatigue’ has resulted in a slump in bookings at domestic hotspots and even the prospect of airport delays and flight cancellations is not stopping people heading abroad. But it’s not ‘staycation fatigue’ at all! It’s things getting back to where they were pre‐pandemic. How can you possibly compare last year’s sum mer holidays when there were travel restrictions? The last two years’ holi day statistics shouldn’t be used. Everything needs to be com pared with 2019’s. This shows, too, the lack of any sense of proportion among anxious local councils, National Park Authorities and the Welsh Government. This swing back was inevitable and entirely predictable. Devon and Cornwall were complain ing about too many tourists. The Lake District National Park was planning to close public roads to all but residents. And the Welsh Government want to charge a tourist tax as well as price out holiday lets with taxes. Surely even the daftest person could see that it was a temporary blip, due to the pandemic?

Vitamin B6 is also vital to boost your immune system. If you’re experiencing skin rash es, sore lips and you’re tired all the time, try eating more avocado, tuna and nuts. Peo ple who menstruate especial ly tend to be iron deficient at some point in their lives due to the blood they lose during ovulation. To restore your body’s iron levels, try eating lentils, spinach and tofu.

Under eye bags can be your body’s way of telling you that you’re tired, stressed out, or not eating the right things. Contrary to popular belief, a bad sleeping pat tern isn’t the main culprit of under eye bags. Sun exposure and smoking can cause dark eye circles due to hy perpigmentation, which allows veins to show beneath your skin and consequently makes your eye area look darker. Allergies can also contribute.Tobanish dark eye circles, you should eat a highly nutritious diet of healthy fats, lean protein, whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables which will visibly im prove your Tomatoesskin.are a great food as they contain lycopene which boosts circulation and protects blood vessels. A FEW weeks ago I received a poster via Messenger from Tony Bryant regarding the book signing of his latest pub lication ‘A Cohort of Creative Bohemians and other Inter esting Individuals’. There was no additional note or person alised invitation, just the poster.Idon’t usually go to any thing outside of Marbella; we get very cosy here and have everything we need, so head ing out on the highway seems like too much of an adven ture. This event was to be held in Fuengirola, which for me feels like the other side of the world, so normally I wouldn’t even consider it. In this instance however, as I enjoy reading Tony’s work and during interviews with him he’s come across as such a lovely person, I decided I would definitely attend and put the date in my diary. Tony is British but has lived on the coast for many years and is passionate about An dalucia. He has published sev eral books on Flamenco and Sevilla but this new contribu tion is completely different. This time Tony has chosen to write about some of the most emblematic people he’s met over the past 25 years as a journalist. On the day of the event I found myself, as usual, doing far more things than are hu manly feasible for the num ber of hours in any given day and was running a little late. The heat was intense and the thought of traffic and driving ‘all the way’ to Fuengirola daunting. Even so, I set off en thusiastically on this “road trip” accompanied by my friend Martina. As anticipated we arrived slightly late and Tony was al ready giving the presentation. As we walked through the door into the packed room I heard my name being pro nounced and my sense of guilt made me think Tony was calling me out for not be ing on time. Much to my de light I later found out that this was not the case, rather that I was part of his ‘speech’ as I’m in the book and my perfectly timed entrance purely coinci dental.Atfirst, all I could think was ‘thank heavens I came!’. There had been no inkling that I would have a special in terest to be there; it had been divine providence without a doubt, saving me from a life time of potential guilt and embarrassment if I hadn’t gone. Now I just feel chuffed and flattered but still totally surprised. I also feel encour aged to carry on just being me, along with all those other bohemians and intellectuals: recognition from somebody in Tony’s professional league is an honour indeed. I still don’t have a copy of the book myself as there were none left after the event as the book was in great de mand, so I’ll need to get one through Amazon, or prefer ably from Tony himself to get it signed too, and see what he actually says about me.

There is no doubt that the scientific achievement is considerable and there are financial benefits to the companies involved in producing the software and hardware for the missions but in reality, in the current financial situation (and bearing in mind that the Euro pean Space Agency is also financially involved), is this the right time to be following a dream that does noth ing to help those in need on the earth today?

AS the world suffers from an ever-increasing surge in the cost of living and Russia continues with its inva sion of Ukraine, the US government is spending $4.1 billion every time NASA launches its next generation of rockets, as it looks to return to the moon after 50 years. The American economy is in decline yet the money can be found to fund this project which is already bil lions over budget and years behind schedule and whilst minorities in that country often suffer the worst, the programme intends to land the first woman and first person of colour on the moon - showing that space exploration is open to everyone.

However, with less com mon pets like birds, we tend to know less about educating them and can make errors when trying to train them. One mistake that many people make when trying to train their pet bird is keeping it in the cage all the time. WHEN you think of a Ford Mustang it evokes memories of the iconic Ford featured in the film Bullitt. A very American muscle car that even today packs a powerful punch with a 5.0‐litre V8 petrol engine. However, there’s a new kind of Mustang prowl ing the roads in the shape of the all‐electric Mach‐E, a very modern and green in carnation of the traditional Mustang. With prices start ing from €59,357/£50,030 it has become almost as much a cult Ford as its petrol‐pow eredThreestablemate.Mach‐Emodels are available in standard or ex tended range; rear‐wheel‐drive, all‐wheel‐drive dual motor and a performance GT version. In GT form, which was my test model, there’s 487PS on tap and the 0 ‐ 62 mph benchmark passes in just 3.7 seconds. There are three drive modes available in cluding a full fat untamed mode. From behind the wheel this astonishingly quick acceleration gives a real sense of drama and, al lied to adaptive suspension, provides an extremely en tertaining drive. It’s also more than capa ble in town which is where any EV is at its best and most practical. As ever the big question with an EV is range. The Mach‐E GT will cover between 236 to 310 miles depending on condi tions. Urban driving invari ably means more braking so regenerative energy helps battery charging and hence range. On faster roads such as a dual carriageway or motorway the range doesn’t hold up quite so well. The UK’s charging in frastructure is lacklustre at best, so longer journeys do need to be planned.

Priced from €86,412/ £72,830 the Mach‐E GT comes very well equipped with performance seats, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise, auto lights and wipers, high beam as sist and Bang & Olufsen sound system. A large cen tral screen offers most con trol functions and being Ford it is quite intuitive, and if you have to go digital then Ford generally make life easier. With the number of EVs growing it’s these specialist and more exciting models that will act as halo cars for EV adoption, and the Mach‐E certainly falls into this cat egory. It’s comfortable and a superb drive whether in normal or untamed mode. My only problem, despite almost universal positives, is that the build quality doesn’t quite live up to that very high price tag. It just doesn’t have that certain something that makes a car feel premium. Look at the entry level Mach‐E and it makes a much more appeal ing financial proposition.

The Red Bull driver was simply unbeatable, as proved by Sergio Perez coming home in second place, with both drivers totally dominating the race. By the end of the first lap, Verstappen had already picked off several others to move into eighth position. His ninth win in 14 races this season leaves the Red Bull man with what already looks like an unassailable lead in the championship. Fer rari’s Charles LeClerc, who was his main rival at the start of the season, finds himself languish ing 98 points behind Verstappen after finishing sixth.Carlos Sainz started the day in pole position but had to settle for the remaining spot on the podium. Unstoppable Verstappen

The whole event was rounded off with a tradi tional meal and dancing at a villa on the outskirts of the city late into the night. At a productive league AGM last week, all clubs re vealed that they now have access to, or own a defibril lator, this is fantastic news, a huge step forward that could save lives. AC Bena havis have eight guys in training to use theirs this week. It was also agreed that Nerja Utd be admitted to the Walking Football Leagues for the forthcom ing season. Nerja Utd Man ager Peter McCormick said “excited to be in the league, and to make new friends along the way.” This gives the Axarquia region four clubs with Torrox, Viñuela and Competa also fielding sides this year. Utd will be fielding teams in both the over 50 and over 60 category. New rules were intro duced and approved at the meeting which in theory should cut down the amount of running that oc curs on the pitch, and main tain the whole ethos of the game. The Walking Dead have expanded their club and hope to field two teams in each category next year. This move will also strengthen the league as it expands.Forall news please visit walkingfooty.com on Face book.

A MAGNIFICENT drive by the current F1 world champion Max Verstappen on Sunday, August 28 at the legendary SpaFrancorchamps circuit saw him win the Belgian Grand Prix. The Dutch man was unstoppable as he roared from 14th on the starting grid to take the chequered flag.

MALAGA Walking Football Club flew a select side to Casablanca, Morroco last weekend. It turned out to be an amazing and emo tional weekend, with the national side showing great hospitality from start to fin ish.Malaga were met by a delegation from the Morro can Walking Football Asso ciation at the Hotel, a sight seeing tour then took place, followed by two games which were played with music so loud that even shouting on the pitch could n’t be heard. The games were watched by hundreds in the crowd, and ended with Malaga winning 90 in the first game and narrowly losing the second game 54. Wayne Clark the chairman of Malaga is pictured pre senting a cheque for €400 to a charity for disabled children, an experience that he described as “extremely emotional and humbling.”
