SPECIALISTS from the Junta’s Centre for Risk Prevention in the Workplace programmed 970 visits to 421 Almeria firms this year. Collaborating with the Work and Social Se curity Inspectorate, their job is to ensure that the employers comply with safety regula tions.In2021 these assessors from the Junta’s department for Employment, Business and the Self-employed visited 339 Almeria firms on 846 occasions, leading to 292 fines, a 14 per cent increase on 2020. They also notified the Work Inspectorate of 24 breaches, three times more than in 2020. So far this year the Risk Prevention in the Workplace experts paid 527 visits to Almeria employers and opened proceedings on 179 occasions. They have also sent on 13 com plaints to the Work inspectors.

CUEVAS DEL ALMANZORA hosts the 19th International Geological and Mining Heritage Conference between September 29 and Oc toberThe2.choice of Cuevas was announced last November during the Conference’s 18th edi tion held in Ciempozuelos (Madrid), munici pal sources revealed. This year’s theme Geology and mining in the 19th and 20th centuries: landscapes, his tory and heritage is directly related to Cuevas’ history, geology and mining. PEDRO ALMODÓVAR re cently used the famous Tabernas Desert as the set ting for his first western, Strange Way of Life, and Jeff Goldblum filmed at El Chor rillo de Pechina for the Net flix series Kaos. Now, a pro duction from the Netherlands, Line of Fire, has also been shot in Almeria. Line of Fire, directed by the award­winning Roel Reiné, an experienced direc tor with nearly 50 produc tions under his belt, was filmed on September 3 and 4 in the Pescadería­La Chan ca neighbourhood of Alme ria City and inside and out side the Alcazaba. More than 90 people are working on the film, of whom around 40 are Span ish. There are 10 actors in the cast, and the feature film is expected to be fin ished in about five months. To allow the film to be shot in Almeria, ‘a land of cinema par excellence’, the Almeria Town Council signed a collaboration agreement with the Dutch production company Key film Productie 1 BV. The agreement was signed by Carlos Sánchez, the council lor for City Promotion, and Aty Soesbergen, from the production company.

A WOMAN of 20 was killed and three people injured at 5.15pm on August 31 when their vehicle collided with a lorry at the Agua Amarga crossroads in Nijar. The lorry driver was unhurt, but two of the injured were immediately admitted to Torrecardenas hospital’s intensive care unit.

HUERCAL-OVERA Town Hall and the La Cuna Bobbin Lace Association are organising the 12th Lacemakers Meeting on October 2. The pandemic was responsi ble for the postponement of the 2020 and 2021 meetings, but the 2019 edition saw 500 lacemakers from Murcia, Granada, Jaen, Malaga and Ciudad Real, as well as Almeria Province, descend on HuercalOvera’s Plaza Mayor to demonstrate their Encaje de Bolillos skills. SINCE August 31, a real fire engine sits at the centre of a roundabout in Albox. The decades-old vehicle has been specially restored and is a tribute to the hard work of the municipal firefighters. The roundabout is the only one in Almeria to have a fire engine and is quite possibly also the only one in Spain. This is part of a larger pro ject that involves decorating different roundabouts around the municipality with motifs related to local heritage and historical trades, creating what the mayor of Albox, Francisco Torrecillas, has defined as a “small open-air museum”. Last year, another round about was given a replica of the façade of the Sanctuary of the Salient, and another has part of an old oil mill. “The next roundabout is de signed to pay tribute to the water carriers, a figure that is very dear to the people of Albox,” said the mayor. He also announced that there are still three more to come.

WITH the aim of promoting cultural activities in towns throughout the province, the Provin cial Council of Almeria has designed a pro gramme called Cortos a la Carta, which will take some of the winning short films from the latest editions of the International Film Festi val of Almeria (FICAL) to seven different mu nicipalities.Themunicipalities of Almocita, Paterna del Rio, Albanchez, Sierro, Fines, Albox and Huer cal de Almeria will host a total of 12 screen ings of international films that have tri umphed at FICAL from 2011 to the present. Each screening will last 70 minutes. The screenings began in Almocita on Au gust 26 and will continue throughout Septem ber and October, with the last session in Fines on October 27.

Tamsin Brown ON September 1, the minister of Agricul ture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Develop ment of the Junta de Andalucia, Carmen Crespo, visited the site where work is be ing carried out by the Irrigation Commu nity of Cuevas del Almanzora to improve irrigation systems in the area. “This work should serve as an example for the whole of Andalucia to show the success that can be achieved when public administration and the private sector work together,” said Crespo. The project involves a public­private investment of €7.3 million (€3 million from the Ministry of Agriculture) and will ‘make the most of all water sources’ over a total of 5,400 hectares of crops. In a single term of office, the Junta de Andalucia has provided €100 million to communities that wish to improve their irrigation systems. In Almeria, six commu nities (Barrancos de Sierra Nevada, Rio Adra, Cuatro Vegas, Cuevas del Almanzo ra, Pulpi and Arboleas) have received nearly €11.5 million. It is estimated that these improvements will reduce water consumption by between 11 and 26 per cent in the province of Almeria.

One of the main objectives of the Ministry is to increase the number of professional physiotherapists in primary care and to speed up the treatment given to patients in need of acute care. One of the measures that will allow this objective to be met is the creation of new spaces for physiotherapy sessions at public healthBelmontecentres.stressed the importance of physiotherapy profes sionals in the health system. From January to July 2022, more than 600,000 physiotherapy consultations have taken place at primary care clinics in Andalucia, and more than 677,000 have taken place at hospitals.

Improvements for Albox schools

THE pupils of two primary schools in the municipality of Albox will have the opportu nity to do sports all year round thanks to improve ments that will be made with funds provided by the Provincial Council of Alme ria. This was announced by the deputy for Develop ment, Ángel Escobar, who said that the Virgen del Saliente and Velázquez pri mary schools will both have new roofs for their sports courts.These works will mean that neither rainfall nor in tense summer heat will stop the children from en joying sports on their mul ti­sports courts. The roofs will also provide a shel tered area for the pupils during break times. The investments included in the 2020­23 Provincial Plans are aimed at promot ing equal opportunities in sports throughout the province of Almeria and will benefit a total of 16 munici palities. “We are talking about more than €6 million to ensure that municipalities can enjoy the same infras tructure and services as large cities,” said Escobar.

He was accompanied by the bass play er Oneida James and the drums player Joaquín Bermejo, known as ‘Minidrums’. Santi Campillo, from Murcia, demonstrat ed his talents as a tremendously versatile musician. His early influences include bands such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Lynyrd Skynyrd, as well as blues guitarists such as Freddie King, Johnny Winter and Al bert Collins. One of his most impressive skills is his ability to improvise and express even the deepest feelings through phrases and riffs on his Campilloguitar.was joined by the Almeriabased rock & roll band Rolenzos, which treated the audience to a selection of dy namic songs with strong baselines, sharp guitars and well­crafted lyrics. The highlight of the Night of Rock was a joint performance from all the artists on stage together, which was a resounding suc cess and got a standing ovation.

The emergency coordina tion centre received a call at around 4:50pm requesting medical assistance. Oldest railway station to close

SANT ANDREU COMTAL station is the oldest railway build ing in active service in Spain, and is Europe’s oldest such facil ity. It came into operation on July 23, 1854, when the rail way line connecting Barcelona and Granollers was opened. The building is in Placa de l’Estacio, in Barcelona, where single­storey dwellings from the end of the 19th century are preserved in all their glory. Pending its final closure, initially scheduled for this year, the station will be replaced by a modern infrastructure that will be built a short distance from the current one. It will be located on the concrete plate that covers the tracks, with an area of 696m². This train station gets its name from the fact that it was lo cated next to the Rec Comtal, the historic hydraulic infras tructure designed to provide an energy source to run the mills, along with irrigation for the orchards. In the 19th cen tury, it also provided water for the incipient industry of Barcelona.

Captured birds released

THE Guardia Civil has released more than 270 illegally cap tured birds in Valencia. The traps they were in were operated remotely by means of a rope that caused them to close and capture the speci mens that had entered inside. The agricultural fields were baited with plenty of grain to at tract the birds, the Guardia Civil confirmed on September 4. In the centre of the enclosure was another goldfinch used as bait, with one of its legs tied to wood anchored to the ground. Two people have been investi gated for using illegal gear to capture the birds, the vast ma jority of which are protected. Due to the breeding season of fringillid birds and with the aim of preventing the capture of protected birds, the Guardia Civil has carried out various surveillance activities in this area in recent months. In the area known as ‘Camino Bayo’, belonging to the municipality of Liria, in Valencia, several illegal traps were found ready for use as a result of the surveillance activities.

During the course of his building work, the man was shocked to uncover around nine million pesetas, equiv alent to about €54,000. The old Spanish currency notes were inside six Nesquick jars scattered around the building and its outbuildings Mr Piñeiro ex plained to a Spanish publi cation.There is an element of good fortune but also bad fortune in this tale. INTERESTING to read some of my mail of late. The piece published on our let ters page caught my attention. It was enquiring as to why there was so little media publicity, or public uproar con cerning the 87­year­old pensioner who was stabbed to death on his mobility scooter? The simple reason was that the arrested perpetrator was a young black male. This would go against the whole future ambitions of the left wing media bosses, who are hell bent on convincing the British public that they are all living happily in a glorious exis tence of mixed cultures.

I’ll even go as far as to stick my neck out here and suggest that the saturated reporting relating to the tragic shooting of Olivia, the nine­year­old little girl, which went on for weeks and over flowed with information that the main suspect was a member of the Liverpool gangs, was purely because most of these particular criminal suspects were white. Had it been a murder committed by members of a different culture, the condensed amount of publicity would have no doubt equalled the atrocious murder of the white pensioner.

TOURISM in Spain contin ues to recover with foreign visitor figures up in July, even though numbers are still less than the same month in 2019. THE UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has found that NatWest Bank breached banking rules.Ithad been forcing business cus tomers to open a business current account, which incurs fees, in order to secure a loan ­ a practice known as ‘bundling’, the UK government con firmed on Wednesday, August 31. As such, hundreds of businesses have been charged monthly for a business account that they may not have wanted or needed. It also limit ed businesses’ choice as they were unable to hold an account with a sep arate provider, which may have bet ter met their requirements. The breach lasted for over three years, with NatWest failing to alert the CMA until January 2021. Having scrutinised the error more closely, the CMA became aware the bank had signed certain customers up for a business account when they had specifically requested to have a fee­freeAdamaccount.Land,CMA Senior Director of Remedies, said: “Forcing business es to open costly current accounts to secure essential loans is unaccept able and a direct breach of our rules, which have been in place for 20 years.The bank is in the process of re funding affected customers and will offer SME customers with a business account the option of switching to a fee­free loan servicing account. Although this is not the only bank to have been discovered to have done this, it is slightly embarrassing for the government which still owns 48.5 per cent of its equity, even af ter former Economic Secretary to the Treasury John Glen sold shares worth over £1 billion in March this year.

WITH food costs spiralling it seems that at long last su permarkets throughout Europe are trying to stop the waste that sees food being destroyed rather than eaten. To some extent they had themselves to blame with an obsessive need to only offer perfectly shaped veg etables which they claim was due to customer de mand.Atthe end of the day many vegetables are peeled and cut before being cooked or served, so why would anyone care about a wonky shape or an ugly tomato when it tastes identical to the perfect specimen?

Stellantis car factories cease production

THE Stellantis group an nounced on Monday Au gust 29, the suspension of all activities at its three plants in Spain. This has been caused by the delay in the arrival of components, and more specifically in the microchips that regulate all the electronic sys tems of the vehicles be ingThisproduced.situation, which is affecting almost all global manufacturers, is delaying the delivery of finished vehicles to cus tomers. On average, the main brands have a de livery time of about five months in almost all their models. Of the three plants that Stellantis has in Spain, the Villaverde plant in Madrid is in a process of preparation for the start of produc tion of new models. As a result, its lines are un dergoing fine­tuning work. The other two large centres, in Zaragoza and Vigo, have been directly affected by the lack of supplies. Microchip production has created a worldwide crisis for more than a year and is severely af fecting the automobile industryDespiteworldwide.thefact that some analysts affirmed that the situation would normalise during the first half of this year, the reality is that the shortage of these com ponents continues and there are already opin ions that affirm that it can last even through out 2023, as reported by a Spanish media source.

A RECENT study carried out by the top website compari son company Confused.com, published at the end of Au gust, has revealed that Italy has the highest car theft rate in Europe, averaging 276 thefts per 100,000 people each year. The figures pro duced represented annual averages from 2011­2019, using data from Eurostat. When compared to coun tries with a similar popula tion size, this is a staggering 80 per cent more than the United Kingdom, which has 153 thefts per 100,000 peo ple, 5 per cent more than France’s 261 thefts per 100,000. Spain came well down the list, in 15th posi tion, with 79 thefts per 100,000 people. With an average of 274 thefts per 100,000 people, Czechia was found to be the second worst country in Eu rope for car theft. Despite having a population 84 per cent smaller than Italy, Czechia has just 0.7 per cent fewer car thefts per 100,000 people each year. Sweden follows behind Czechia as the third worst country for car theft, with 266 thefts per 100,000 peo ple on average each year. When compared to their Scandinavian neighbours, Sweden experiences 91 per cent more thefts per 100,000 people each year than Fin land’s 139 per 100,000, and a staggering 138 per cent more thefts than Norway, which averages 112 per year. Propping up the list, as the country where vehicle own ers are least likely to experi ence vehicle theft amongst all Europeans was Denmark. The Scandinavian country re vealed just five thefts per 100,000 people on average each year ­ 98 per cent lower than Italy’s 276.

THROUGH green power re quirements, the German car manufacturer Porsche is re ducing its supply chain CO₂ emissions. As reported by Porsche in its Newsroom on Friday, Septem ber 2, the car giant is taking re sponsibility for sustainable and transparent supply chains. In July 2021, the sports car man ufacturer called on its approxi mately 1,300 direct series sup pliers to use only renewable energies in new projects for the manufacture of Porsche components.Oneyearon, the manufac turer is seeing positive results: its suppliers selected for new vehicle projects have commit ted to switching their produc tion to certified green power and are working with Porsche to reduce CO2 emissions in the supply chain. “We are implementing our clear sustainability strategy in procurement together with our direct suppliers,” said Bar bara Frenkel, Member of the Executive Board for Procure ment at Porsche AG. Porsche is working towards making its value chain net car bon­neutral in 2030. This in cludes a net carbon­neutral use phase for future BEV mod els. In doing so, the sports car manufacturer is not only demonstrating its commit ment to the Paris Climate Agreement but is also setting standards in the German auto motive“Procurementindustry. is a team sport. IT’S a BMW but not as we know it! The premium German car maker is known for its sporting saloons and tourers, sleek sports cars and muscular SUVs. Which makes the 2Series Active Tourer seem a little out of place within the range. However, it’s aimed at buyers who would per haps not normally consid er BMW. It is a cross be tween a compact MPV (there’s a term you don’t hear nowadays) and spa ciousOfferedhatchback.inpetrol, diesel or plug­in and mild hybrid form, prices start from €36,631/£31,285 and en compasses three trim lev els. The lead­in model comes with LED lights, au tomatic tailgate, naviga tion, automatic air condi tioning, cruise control and litre petrol engines and a 2.0­litre diesel. To be honest the exteri or of the 2­Series Active Tourer looks fairly ordi nary, take a seat inside though and things take a surprising turn. It is very similar to the new iX inte rior and looks very smart and very premium. It’s spacious and practical thanks to sliding rear that just feels very airy. Although the inevitable march of cockpit digitisa tion has removed most buttons and switches BMW’s system is one of the more intuitive, and easy to use with clear graphics and what but tons and switches remain operate with a crisp posi tivity lacking in cheaper cars. €46,225/£39,479 but that included the test car’s €8k/£7k of Upgradesoptions.ranged from a HarmanKardon sur round sound system to a panoramic opening glass roof. Standard fare is far from minimal with heated sports seats, wireless charging, climate, smart phone integration, headup display, auto lights and dimming mirrors. The 1.5­litre, tur bocharged, three­cylinder petrol engine is mated to a seven­speed automatic gearbox and benefits from mild­hybrid technol ogy. It’s an incredibly smooth drive and unlike so many three­cylinder units there’s none of the usual engine thrum un less you really push the revs. With 115kW/156 hp the benchmark 100 kmh/ 62 mph is reached in 8.1 seconds, so while not the fastest machine it’s more than capable of picking up its feet when required. It provides a genuinely practical family vehicle that carries the famous BMW roundel, and al though it may not be the most affordable choice it feels and drives very pre mium. It may be an old adage but you get what you pay for in all things, and cars are no excep tion.
