THE British Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott, visited the Cudeca Hos pice in Benalmádena on Monday September 5. He and his wife María Antonia Martín were given a guided tour of the building and met staff who recounted the history of the palliative care centre founded by British subject Joan Hunt, the only one of its kind in Spain, and ex plained the various care pro grammes. Cudeca, which cares for more than 1,700 people of many different nationalities every year, has home care teams, day care facil ities, rehabilitation and physiother apy services as well as psychological and social care professionals and an InPatient Unit. Mr Elliott was also introduced to several volunteers, who told him how they help to raise funds either in the charity shops or by organising events, or offer practical help at the hospice or by caring for patients and their families, and he learned how British volunteers had been crucial from the beginning, when Joan Hunt called on her compatriots for help in raising funds for a hospice. The tour of the installations then moved to the adjoining building, the recently inaugurated Yusuf Hamied Centre, headquarters of the Cudeca Institute of Studies and Re search in Palliative Care, where Cud eca will train future palliative care specialists.JoanHunt, who died in June 2021, was awarded an OBE in 2002 for her work establishing a centre to care for people with incurable and termi nal illnesses, and the Ambassador, who later was due to present the same honour to the mayor of Mala ga, Francisco de la Torre, comment ed that he was very sorry not to have met such a remarkable pio neer. He congratulated all the staff and volunteers for their work to maintain her legacy, and had high praise for the hospice itself and its beautiful surroundings.

LIAM GALLAGHER, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Kraftwerk, Arctic Monkeys, The Chemical Brothers, Blossoms and Róisín Murphy all contributed character and colour as the inaugural threeday Cala Mijas festival proved to be a resounding success.Itwas former Oasis frontman Gal lagher who dominated proceedings on Saturday evening with his head line show drawing heavily on the classics that elevated him and song writing brother Noel to fame in the 90s and Words00s.such as ‘legend’, ‘icon’ and ‘rock ’n’ roll star’ flashed up on screen before Liam and his band kicked into the opening ‘Morning Glory’, the Glitterish ‘Hello’ and ‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Star’, three Oasis songs that ensured a winning start. Title track ‘C’mon You Know’ was one of four selections from his re cent No. 1 album, but it was the likes of ‘Slide Away’, ‘Cigarettes & Alco hol’, ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Live Forever’ and the anthemic ‘Champagne Su pernova’ that had the crowd singing. performance overall came from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, who produced a powerful set on Friday September 2 as they timewalked their way through their 40year cat alogue of songs of love and hate, From the opening ‘Get Ready For Love’, Cave had the audience in wor ship and, with oldies such as ‘From Her To Eternity’ and ‘Tupelo’, the Australian was preaching from the heavens one minute and stoking the fires of hell the next. With so much emotion from Cave, it was difficult to adapt to the motionless display from Kraftwerk immediately afterwards.

A local voice

I’ll be focusing on the big local news items as well as some reflections on my work as a coun cillor and what we actu ally do. I want to focus on what really matters to local people.

BILL ANDERSON: Focusing on what really matters.

Tell us a little about how you came to live in Spain and how long you’ve been here?

What would you say is the most important thing you would tell lo cal residents as some one heavily involved in what is going on local ly? I would encourage people to get involved in the elections if they’re eligible and have a say in what’s happening locally. Councils in Spain have a lot of sway over what is happening in the area, including rubbish collec tion and roads, and it is important to have your say. And finally, how will you be using your new Euro Weekly News col umn to help local resi dents?

Not only does this use the charity’s resources but it also takes essential time from the nurses and transla tors who work to perform the screening and get the results to people in English. This is how we incentivise people to make sure they get their results.” The event will take place from 11am to 1pm on October 5 and attendees will be given a voucher and an appointment for screening on the spot for clinics in Calahonda and Es tepona.Lorraine said: “If you’ve al ready been screened in the last year please come next year but for everyone else come along, whoever and whatever your circumstances.”

ESTIMATES from the cooperatives and agrarian organ isations are predicting it was announced on Saturday, September 3, that Andalucia’s olive oil harvest could be the worst in 10 years. As a result of the drought, they believe this year’s yield could be nearly 50 per cent down compared to 2021. Last season, according to sources consulted by Efea gro, the yield was 1.4 million tons of oil. Olive growers are pessimistic about repeating that figure this year though, when the region has registered so little rain fall.Arturo Hernangomez, the technician of the olive and oil sector of the Asaja agrarian organisation has af firmed that at a national level, ‘the forecasts are very negative’. He estimates a yield of around 800,000 tons, ‘about 50 per cent of last year’. The last bad harvest to date was in 2012, when just over 620,000 tons of oil were“Thisproduced.isanabrupt drop in production due to the fact that the drought has been very great, especially in the south of Spain. It has occurred at the moment when the olive trees started flowering, a particularly sensi tive phase,” explained Hernangomez.

“It is a pleasure to be able to repeat this event for another year to pro mote Andalucian and women’s sports,” said Iline. He thanked the City Council, the Board, and FC Marbella for their support, which was represented by its coordinator, Alfredo Gil, who reminded every body that the tournament is endowed with €25,000 in prizes.

Oldest railway station to close SANT ANDREU COMTAL station is the oldest railway build ing in active service in Spain, and is Europe’s oldest such facil ity. It came into operation on July 23, 1854, when the rail way line connecting Barcelona and Granollers was opened. The building is in Placa de l’Estacio, in Barcelona, where singlestorey dwellings from the end of the 19th century are preserved in all their glory. Pending its final closure, initially scheduled for this year, the station will be replaced by a modern infrastructure that will be built a short distance from the current one. It will be located on the concrete plate that covers the tracks, with an area of 696m². This train station gets its name from the fact that it was lo cated next to the Rec Comtal, the historic hydraulic infras tructure designed to provide an energy source to run the mills, along with irrigation for the orchards. In the 19th cen tury, it also provided water for the incipient industry of Barcelona.

TRADITIONAL weather forecasters, cabañuelas or cavanuelas, are forecasting a wet Spain in 2023 using prediction meth ods that date back many centuries. According to a Spanish news site, on Monday, September 5, these traditional weather forecasters use the knowledge that has been passed down the genera tions to predict the weather. They have been taught how to read the sky to make predictions about rainfall pat terns, and they say the rains are coming. But will they be right with the low rain fall of 2022 decimating crop yields. In times of drought, those whose liveli hood is dependent on the rain look to all sources for some guidance on what is to come, resulting in demand for these weathermen. Typically these forecasters work with short forecasts, usually a fort night. However, many of these forecasters are now looking further ahead as farmers and others look for positive signs. According to those spoken to by the news source, the rains will come early in 2023 and will be such that reservoirs will once again fill and farms will produce abundant crops.

THE UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has found that NatWest Bank breached banking rules.Ithad been forcing business cus tomers to open a business current account, which incurs fees, in order to secure a loan a practice known as ‘bundling’, the UK government con firmed on Wednesday, August 31. As such, hundreds of businesses have been charged monthly for a business account that they may not have wanted or needed. It also limit ed businesses’ choice as they were unable to hold an account with a sep arate provider, which may have bet ter met their requirements. The breach lasted for over three years, with NatWest failing to alert the CMA until January 2021. Having scrutinised the error more closely, the CMA became aware the bank had signed certain customers up for a business account when they had specifically requested to have a feefreeAdamaccount.Land,CMA Senior Director of Remedies, said: “Forcing business es to open costly current accounts to secure essential loans is unaccept able and a direct breach of our rules, which have been in place for 20 years. The bank is in the process of re funding affected customers and will offer SME customers with a business account the option of switching to a feefree loan servicing account. Although this is not the only bank to have been discovered to have done this, it is slightly embarrassing for the government which still owns 48.5 per cent of its equity, even af ter former Economic Secretary to the Treasury John Glen sold shares worth over £1 billion in March this year.

ON Thursday September 1, Spanish President Pedro Sánchez announced plans to tem porarily cut VAT on gas from the current 21 per cent to 5 per cent in a bid to make life more affordable during the winter. This will take effect from the beginning of October and run through until the end of De cember, although members of the opposition Partido Popular have suggested that it should be extended further. What needs to be re membered however is, that unlike the UK, a lot of gas used is the bottled variety and costs will reduce there, but although some 40 per cent of electricity is created through use of gas there will be no saving on the already re duced rate of VAT on that form of energy. MANY customers find it irritating to have to stand in long queues in some stores in order to pay for their goods. An experiment by low price Dutch retailer Hema, if successful, could see a whole new option for shops and con sumers as it trials a unique new mobile app developed by ING and European payment provider CCV. They claim it will revolutionise shopping as the app can turn any mobile phone into a payment terminal meaning that every member of staff on the shop floor will be able to easily accept card payments and send a digital receipt.

SPAIN is becoming a very at tractive country as far as Asian tech companies are concerned with its commitment to invest in the future. It aims to become the central European Hub in the field of digitisation and development of semiconductors, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan thanks to the massive fi nancial support of the EU Therefore, on Wednesday August 31, President Pedro Sánchez, held a meeting in Madrid at La Moncloa with the CEO and Vice President of Sam sung Electronics, JongHee Han.During the meeting they dis cussed the investment oppor tunities offered by Spain in these fields as the Recovery Plan allocates some €20 billion to digital transformation, with more than €3.5 billion aimed at reinforcing the technological training of the population, an other €3.5 billion destined for the modernisation of small and medium companies (SMEs) and €3 billion for the digitisation of public administrations.

INTERESTING to read some of my mail of late. The piece published on our let ters page caught my attention. It was enquiring as to why there was so little media publicity, or public uproar con cerning the 87yearold pensioner who was stabbed to death on his mobility scooter? The simple reason was that the arrested perpetrator was a young black male. This would go against the whole future ambitions of the left wing media bosses, who are hell bent on convincing the British public that they are all living happily in a glorious exis tence of mixed cultures.

I’ll even go as far as to stick my neck out here and suggest that the saturated reporting relating to the tragic shooting of Olivia, the nineyearold little girl, which went on for weeks and over flowed with information that the main suspect was a member of the Liverpool gangs, was purely because most of these particular criminal suspects were white. Had it been a murder committed by members of a different culture, the condensed amount of publicity would have no doubt equalled the atrocious murder of the white pensioner.

The media bosses are on a hell bent mission to get rid of the conservative government in the next election basi cally because they know they will be more powerful and secure. Their news events are at this time revelling in the chaotic mess the country finds itself in. Any attempts by the government to as sist or rectify some of the problems (most of which are national complica tions) are nullified or almost scoffed at. They are continually informing the public that the new leader will have to sort out countless problems now affect ing a beleaguered British community, and their excessive casting of minority actors in commercials and documen taries is not only misleading, but utterly prejudicial to the majority of artistic professionals. It is all a part of their plans to put a Labour government into number 10. If they can make the UK in habitants feel they are propitious par takers of a perfectly mixed culture, they believe they will obtain a victorious in flux of votes from a grateful British pub lic. In actual fact they are totally wrong. The historical citizens of the UK are not unintelligent. Vast numbers are not at all overjoyed with many of the con sequences that have transpired since they openly welcomed members of dif ferent nationalities into the population. Many have moved out of once beloved cities and into more peaceful and patri otic rural areas. However these citizens are still principal partisans of their beloved country of origin. The more the media excessively encour ages different cultures (15 per cent), the greater will grow the lack of support from the majority (85 per cent) of the British public. What if PM winner Truss turns out to be akin to another Margaret Thatcher? The thought of Starmer and Rayner win ning against her really boggles the imagi nation! Nope, these vote grabbing tactics will utterly misfire and the results will once again be the usual left wing disaster. It will be interesting to observe just how far left they are ultimately prepared to go! Keep the faith Love leapylee2002@gmail.com.Leapy

UNTIl now, Costa del Sol’s property market had ex perienced a very rocky year. Buying and selling has continued to increase and offers have continued to fall. As we enter into the last five months of the year, it’s time to ask if these trends will continue throughout the rest of 2022.Property prices have in creased constantly this year. The most recent statistics show an in crease of 8 per cent up until the second trimester for all property prices. However, despite the in creased prices, the cost of living has remained con siderably low since the property market bubble burst in 2007 when the ef fects of Spain overshoot ing its housing stock tar gets came to fruition. However, sustained de mand in 2022 suggests that property prices will continue to rise, although at a slower pace than we’ve seen so far. With a margin of 27 per cent, properties on the Costa del Sol still seem like a good purchase option with plenty of room to grow.

THE Spanish housing mar ket demonstrated excep tional health during the pandemic but now faces a new challenge in the form of rising interest rates. Housing is a sector highly affected by the growing cost of living crisis. The imbalance between the offer and demand for housing in Spain is creat ing evident price tensions in certain areas through out the country, as is the case with the Balearic is lands and central Madrid and Barcelona. This is making property more ex pensive, however, unlike in 2008 when the buying and selling bubble burst due to lack of demand and created a property crisis, this time the credit risk as sumed by banks is under control and neither devel opers nor households are excessively indebted.

COSTA DEL SOL: Is still a good purchase option.

(BRRR) clearly sets out how you can buy a property, add value to it through refur bishments, rent it out for cashflow and then remortgage it in order to release the invested funds. Stick to mainly cosmetic refurbish ments and once they’ve been carried out, you can refinance your property at a higher value, recycling the funds for your next investment. It’s best to do this with a Below Market Value (BMV) property so that you can create builtin equity which will be available to you when you refinance the property or sell it on.

We live in a world where ‘lying’ and selfdeception are the ‘new way of life’.We get our hopes up and become dependent on likes on social net works, matches on Tinder etc... This leads to the fact that people live in relationships having the zeropair as an option until they find some thing better just to not be alone. Feed your brain

Monounsaturated fats found in avocado, olive oil and nuts stimulate the release of the neu rotransmitter acetyl choline, important for learning and memory. Wholegrains such as oats and quinoa feed your gut microbiota. Green vegetables like spinach and broccoli are excellent sources of magnesium, which is vi tal for relaying signals between your brain and your body. Citrus fruits and sources of vitamin C help protect brain cells from damage by provid ing plenty of antioxi dants. Finally, nutrition is not the only factor. Ex perts recommend doing activities that stimulate brain activity, such as learning things or read ing, and generally lead ing a healthy life.

AUDIOBOOKS are booming in this timepoor, podcastfriendly world! According to the Audiobook Publishers Association, 74,000+ audiobooks were published last year in the USA alone with ‘Mysteries/ Thrillers/Suspense’ one of the most popu lar genres. After all, you can multitask while listening: 47 per ceent of those who buy audiobooks listen while commuting, about 25 per cent while working at home and 23 per cent while exercising. And publishers are doing fullscale pro ductions with celebrities to attract new readers (like Meryl Streep reading ‘Char lotte’s Web’, Dustin Hoffman ‘Being There’ and Michelle Obama all 19 hours of her own memoir, ‘Becoming’). Homer’s Iliad was essentially an audiobook before it was ever written down! All my novels are available in ebook/Ap ple Book/paperback and audiobook for mats. But this wasn’t always so. The first thing you’ll want to think about is where you are going and what ac tivities there will be for you and your kids. AS with any other country in the world there are many different types of busi nesses here in Spain. Due to a European law passed a few years ago, some people do not need to have a qualification to run some kinds of businesses, that law was called ‘Omnibus’. What perhaps may surprise you is that only lawyers, doctors, dentists, architects, vets, nurses, teachers, pharmacists, and civil engineers need to be qualified and regulated to ply their trade. That means that if you wish to start any other business you can do so in Spain without a mandatory qualification or regu lation by a governing body. Of course, you have to register as autonomo or form a limited company. For example, anyone in Spain can be an estate agent, they can be regulated by for example the API (Agente de la Propiedad Inmobiliaria), this is the largest Spanish re al estate organisation. The API title is is sued by the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Environment, after attend ing a training course and passing the quali fication tests. However, it’s completely op tional. You may have noticed the large amount of consultants, experts, advisors and other people that are running business here showing no credentials re their own skills in their trade and without being regulated by any official body. So, if you’re going to instruct someone in Spain to provide a service, do your own due diligence before you instruct them. If possible, instruct a qualified, regulated, in sured professional, someone that has the qualifications recognised in Spain to carry out their trade or profession.

CAMPING can be a great way to spend some time outdoors, es pecially with the good Spanish weather, but it is important to know that there are a lot of laws and restrictions on camping in its beautiful countryside. Camping outside of autho rised campsites (wild camping) is forbidden in most of the Au tonomous Communities and there can be heavy fines for those who do not comply. For example, wild camping in Aragon can result in fines of be tween €600 and €6,000. In An dalucia, on the other hand, it is also prohibited but the law does not treat it as a serious offence and the campers will simply be asked to leave.

Cadiz is a stunning city, busy (difficult to find a parking space) but vibrant and lively, but not really a day trip kind of place. So,where to next? As my return to work looms above my head like a dis approving matriarch, probably closer to home, Benahavis, the Roman spa in Guadalmina perhaps? Or back to Nellie Gs and a quick drink at The Victoria andSoundsAlbert.good to me.

The next day I set off for Cadiz, the home of the armada before its igno minious defeat by Drake’s fire ships. The port is huge and spectacular, the turquoise sea framing the outskirts of the city. Another hot and humid day and spent slinking around the shadows due to sunburn from the previous day. I paid for the entrance to the cathe dral and was suitably underwhelmed. It possesses an incredible exterior with a large sandstone dome, unlike most of Spain’s more Gothic places of worship, it’s constructed of two different coloured stone and nestles like a fat al bino toad on the edge of the coast. In terior wise it is surprisingly and disap pointingly bland (sorry!). That done and ticked off I went to the Roman amphitheatre, blessedly free and a real find. Those Romans cer tainly knew how to build a theatre.

I LOVE a good cathedral as much as the next sweaty tourist. Show me an am phitheatre and I am on cloud nine. Af ter a spectacular breakfast at Nellie Gs here in Benavista, armed only with a mobile phone and a sense of optimism, I set off for Ronda. Beautiful, full of charm and history and the most in credible vistas (what on earth pos sessed those ancient folk to build an aqueduct in a gorge a billion miles deep? Breathtaking views but good ness imagine forgetting your spanner). It was a very humid day so the going was tough. Tourists in Ronda work for their vistas as did the poor sods who built the Tajo. I have lived in Spain for nearly 15 years and tend to spend most of my time between Marbella and Gibraltar since moving two years ago from Ali cante. It is safe to say that I saw more of Spain as a tourist from the UK than I do now as a resident, so this weekend I set off to become an incidental tourist of one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

Croquet is the new ‘in’ thing in Marbella or at least it will be if Beatriz Crawford has anything to do with it. Such is her investment in sharing the benefits of playing this sport that she or ganised and sponsored the first Croquet Tournament at the Guadalmina Golf Club, to encourage the existing play ers and entice more. I first met Beatriz some eight years ago in her role as President of the Marbella Ladies Golf Association but nowadays, although still pas sionate about golf, she has discovered something in Cro quet that she likes so much that she’s even moved house to be near Guadalmina where she plays. The appeal for this sport makes sense and is ideal for our community: it can be sur prisingly competitive and de manding or very laid back; de pending entirely on the players. Each game takes ap proximately an hour and is perfect for all ages and men and women alike. You don’t have to be very skilled but a good strategy can go a long way. Obviously the more dexterous the players and the more tactics em ployed, the more satisfaction. Above all it is a social sport that doesn’t take up an entire morning or afternoon like golf does. This makes it easier to take that social break with friends and for those who are a little older, a less strenuous activity in which to participate and enjoy the fresh air. I went along with my cam era to the Guadalmina Golf Club to the prizegiving cere mony and cocktail to capture moments of this first tourna ment for posterity, which you can first see tonight in this week’s Marbella Now #MN363 on RTV Marbella at 11pm, also via streaming and then available online. I think you’ll enjoy the event and ‘meeting’ Beatriz. I personally feel very proud for her: the trophies were impressive as was the turnout, catering and service; we were even serenaded by a harp player to add to the already elegant ambiance. This is undeniably the start of something that holds much promise. You’ll also get to meet an other colourful Marbella char acter: Miriam Lopez, sister of Spanish singing star Mari Trini (RIP). Miriam as you will see in tonight’s programme, is ex uberant about her newfound passion for croquet and is another perfect exam ple of how finding the right sport can really improve someone’s quality of life; giv ing them that all important purpose with something to look forward to. If you’ve never played Cro quet before no worries, Mari an Velasco is the teacher at Guadalmina who gives lessons on how to play and understand the nuances of the game; with the intention of getting you on the court from the very first moment. As a final note I’d like to congratulate Beatriz on this initiative and invite you all to share this information with your family and friends. Beat riz has gone ‘allout’ to bring this sport to our awareness, but the next step is up to us, so please do ‘play #Bettertogetheralong’.

Mike’s opinions are his own and are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or sponsors. For more from our columnists please scan this QR Code TO be honest, it’s a bit of a conversation stopper. “What do you do for a living?” “I’m a local politician.” As“Oh!”the only International resident ev er to serve as a councillor on Mijas Council, I am often congratulated. But actually, I didn’t do anything to get here. Firstly, it was the determination of my good friend and long time ‘politician’, Angel Nozal, who very sneakily walked me into a trap and found me agreeing to go onto his list for the 2019 local elec tions. Then, it was the people who vot ed for his candidates list, and ‘voila’, I’m a local Becomingpolitician.alocal councillor is less im portant than what you do once you are there. At my age, I think it would be over optimistic to suggest that this change in my work life can be classed as a career change. I should be considering the re tirement options which would allow me to further pursue my writing ‘career’, but instead I decided to offer myself up as a candidate for the 2023 elections.

Bill’s opinions are his own and are not necessarily representative of those of the publishers, advertisers or sponsors.

I have tried to keep my writing going by publishing two diaries of a Councillor in Opposition and at the same time show some of the distasteful hinter side of the world of local politics where egos and big salaries drive the ambitious more than the desire to get it right for the communi ty.Maybe there is a lesson here for all of us in the political world. I really don’t see myself as a ‘politician’ but I tried telling people I was a ‘councillor’ and many thought I was a ‘counsellor’ and it often takes too long to explain the vagaries of English homophones to an Estonian. Per haps I should take a leaf out of my own book, and tell people I am a public ser vant.PS.

I DON’T understand, and never will, why the British media have to name terrible things and people with something which somehow glorifies them. For instance, there is an Isis terror group, known as the Beatles because of their British ac cents, who murdered hostages while fighting with Isis in Syria. The Beatles, to me, were the greatest thing to happen to music in my lifetime. Even today new musicians still say that they were influenced by them. So why does the me dia even put the two together in the same sen tence? Instead they shouldn’t name them or put any pictures of these pieces of scum or give their cause any publicity. Does anybody actually buy any of the products that pop up every bloody second on Instagram, Facebook and every site you go on? How many people reply to all the scam emails? Has any bloke’s w***y actually got bigger by replying to an email? My mate had a p***s extension - ruined the look of his house. There is a Jamie Foxx movie that has been shelved since 2016. It’s a comedy starring Jeremy Piven, Robert Downey Jr, Benicio del Toro, Ger ard Butler and Eva Longoria. A pretty good cast I think you’ll agree. So why won’t it ever be re leased? Well it’s because some of the actors play roles which means they are pretending to be someone they aren’t ….sorta like, how can I best describe it? I know - ACTING! Yes it does mean that Foxx is made up to look like a white racist cop and Downy Jr plays a Mexican, but really do they have to shelve a film because of fear of be ing cancelled? If people don’t like the idea of its storyline or cast then don’t go and see the movie. It’s as simple as that. Decided to go for a swim with Mrs S the other evening. Both of us just cossies and a towel and keys, no phones, just going for a quick dip which seemed like a great idea, except as I closed the front door Patti realised that we (she) had left a set of keys in the lock on the inside. If any of you have done that you will know that it means you can’t open the door. Thankfully a neighbour let us borrow a phone and an hour later we were back in thanks to us knowing someone who can break into houses. Oh and by the way without your own phone you are pretty much stuffed as nobody remembers numbers any more.

DEAR Leapy How refreshing to know that I am not the only old f**t that thinks our way. We like you have left the UK, but only 15 years ago, but it was probably the best thing we have done. Living in Spain, slightly north of Alicante is a good place to be. My grandchildren are hav ing to pay over £800 a month for a room in a shared house. Our children have bought a share in a flat and have to rent the rest of it on a scheme to make it easy to buy. What a con that is! Also, saw a very good friend of mine yesterday, who is quite ill, his family have sug gested that he goes back to the UK, but he said he would rather die here. What a sad state for the old boy. Keep the faith Ted in Pinoso

That’s changing quite quickly and also best before dates on hundreds of vegetables and fruit are being re moved across the UK with the idea that the average as sistant or shopper is able to see whether something is fresh or not and can make an informed decision whether to purchase.

IF your cat is suffering from constipation over a long peri od of time, it could lead to more serious health condi tions. Here are some of the causes of constipation in cats, you should know to avoid your feline friend feeling un comfortable.Oneofthe causes could be that it has ingested some thing strange like a small ob ject that can obstruct its in testines. To avoid this, make sure not to leave things lying around that could be a risk to yourEspeciallycat. in the summer, your cat could suffer from dehydration. This can mean that your cat’s colon will try to absorb more water from the faeces to achieve water balance. Make sure your kit ty’s water bowl is always full and that they’re not stuck outside in direct sunlight. In almost stereotypical cat fashion, hair balls can also be the cause of discomfort. If they ingest too much hair when cleaning themselves, it can form a ball in their stom ach and if your cat can’t cough it out, it can cause con stipation.

Tamsin Brown CATS are curious creatures that explore the world around them through their senses, but are not able to tell whether something is danger ous or not before touching it or tasting it. If you are a firsttime cat owner, you can catproof your home with these tips.Give your new kitty time to explore and adjust to its new surroundings. Keep doors and windows closed at first, or take extra care when opening them. Do not leave bags of rubbish unattended, as your cat may claw its way into them. Hide any really fragile or valuable objects, as they could easily be accidentally (or intentionally) knocked over by a mischievous cat. Keep the doors of appli ances, such as the dishwasher and washing machine, closed and get into the habit of checking for adventurous cats before using them. The same goes for the toilet lid! Keep electrical cords out of the way and consider buying cable protectors. Store plastic bags in a safe place, as they can put animals at risk of suf focation or choking. Avoid candles or incense fur and flames do not go well togeth er.

A poor diet can lead to hyperactivity and other behavioural issues, and if your dog is not getting enough physical activity, there will be nowhere for all that excess energy toIfgo.your dog gets excited and jumps at visi tors, although it’s fairly normal, this can be undesirable for some people. A good method is to look away and not pay any at tention. Try using a lead so that your dog learns to be calm when people come to the house.Youmay have already tried positive rein forcement of good behaviour, but special attention and treats can be very effective. If your dog plays too roughly or behaves badly, respond with a firm but controlled “no”.Their behaviour will not change overnight. However, seek advice from your vet if you are really stuck.

SADLY , our pets tend to age more quickly than we do, but the right care will allow them to enjoy the later stages of their lives just as much or even more than their youngerThanksyears.toadvances in veterinary treatments, our pets are living longer. Different ani mals are considered geriatric at different times: from the age of seven for large dogs, 10 for small dogs, eight for cats and six for rabbits. Broadly speaking, our pets age in a similar way to us. They may experi ence joint pain, their teeth suffer and their nails become more brit tle. They may lose their hearing, so if they seem not to be listening to you it is probably be cause they have not heard you and not be cause their behaviour hasWhenchanged.taking care of your elderly animals, al ways seek advice from yourProvidingvet. them with food suited to their age, adapting walks to their abilities and creating a calm, safe environment are simple ways of giv ing them a better quali ty of life in their final years.

WHEN you think of a Ford Mustang it evokes memories of the iconic Ford featured in the film Bullitt. A very American muscle car that even today packs a powerful punch with a 5.0litre V8 petrol engine. However, there’s a new kind of Mustang prowl ing the roads in the shape of the allelectric MachE, a very modern and green in carnation of the traditional Mustang. With prices start ing from €59,357/£50,030 it has become almost as much a cult Ford as its petrolpow eredThreestablemate.MachEmodels are available in standard or ex tended range; rearwheeldrive, allwheeldrive dual motor and a performance GT version. In GT form, which was my test model, there’s 487PS on tap and the 0 62 mph benchmark passes in just 3.7 seconds. There are three drive modes available in cluding a full fat untamed mode. From behind the wheel this astonishingly quick acceleration gives a real sense of drama and, al lied to adaptive suspension, provides an extremely en tertaining drive. It’s also more than capa ble in town which is where any EV is at its best and most practical. As ever the big question with an EV is range. The MachE GT will cover between 236 to 310 miles depending on condi tions. Urban driving invari ably means more braking so regenerative energy helps battery charging and hence range. On faster roads such as a dual carriageway or motorway the range doesn’t hold up quite so well. The UK’s charging in frastructure is lacklustre at best, so longer journeys do need to be planned. Priced from €86,412/ £72,830 the MachE GT comes very well equipped with performance seats, wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise, auto lights and wipers, high beam as sist and Bang & Olufsen sound system. A large cen tral screen offers most con trol functions and being Ford it is quite intuitive, and if you have to go digital then Ford generally make life easier. With the number of EVs growing it’s these specialist and more exciting models that will act as halo cars for EV adoption, and the MachE certainly falls into this cat egory. It’s comfortable and a superb drive whether in normal or untamed mode. My only problem, despite almost universal positives, is that the build quality doesn’t quite live up to that very high price tag. It just doesn’t have that certain something that makes a car feel premium. Look at the entry level MachE and it makes a much more appeal ing financial proposition. byMarkSlack drama

RAFAEL NADAL cruised into the fourth round of the US Open in the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday, Septem ber 3, after a crushing 60 61 75 straightsets victory over Richard Gasquet. The Spaniard has now played Gas quet 18 times without loss. The second seed took two hours and 17 minutes to dispose of his French opponent. In his previous two matches against Fognini and Rinky Hijikata, he had lost the opening sets, but Nadal was to tally unplayable for the first two sets of this match. His ruthless attitude saw him produce a 78 per cent rate of firstserve points, hitting 35 winners. He also converted three of six break points in a sublime display of tennis skills. The Spanish legend will now face Frances Tiafoe, the American No22 seed, in the next round. With the 2022 Australian and French Open titles safely in the bag, Nadal can forge ahead in his quest to become the greatest men’s singles champion of all time. Rafael Nadal at the US Open.
