EURO WEEKLY NEWS’ readers have been getting in touch with their touching memories of the Queen and her incredi ble 70year reign.

Queen Elizabeth became a homeowner at just six years old

Did you know…

The funeral will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022.

On a recent lowkey trip to Scotland, the Queen met some American tourists while walking. When the tourists asked if she lived locally, she mentioned that she had a house near by, and when asked if she’d ever met the Queen she simply pointed at her security guard and said, “No, but he has!”

The Queen’s funeral

Her actual birthday 21 April and her official birthday, which was held on a Saturday in June when the weather’s better.

Queen Elizabeth II had two birthdays!

EWN reader Lois Bennett said: “I was born in Windsor so have seen her on many occasions in years gone by. I also knew some of the staff who worked at Windsor Castle too. One year I had a Xmas card which said from the staff at Windsor Castle. The Queen’s mother was very popular too. I have fond mem ories of seeing the changing of the guard numourous times and all the parades. Even as a child I would get so excit ed when I saw the Queen. She will go down in history as be ing the best Queen. RIP dear Queen and thanks for the wonderful memo ries.”Paul

MESSAGES of support for Queen Elizabeth II have also been flooding in from across Spain and Gibraltar.

Even the monarch went undercover sometimes…

Moore on Facebook re calls: “First real memory of the Queen was the 1977 Silver Ju bilee, yet she’s been a large part of my (and most people’s) lives. Taught us decency, strength, honour and a work ethic second to none. Truly a momentous loss to not just the UK and the Commonwealth, but the world as a whole and I think that in the decades to come that this day will be regarded as the day the world became a darker and more insular world. The Queen united large parts of the world and defied all her critics and without that ‘glue’ holding and uniting us, I fear for the future . RIP Queen Elizabeth the Sec ond and Long Live the King!”

How can I watch the funeral?

As the late Queen will have a state funeral, the service will be broadcast on BBC One, BBC News and will be available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

70 Glorious Years

Here the Euro Weekly News has put together a tribute to commemorate the Queen and her glorious reign.

Sam Fintz, who owns the Torrox Busi ness Hub with his partner Colin, saw the Queen in South Africa: “I was working in the harbour at a restaurant in 1995 and the Queen was doing a walk around and meeting people and was just a few feet away from me. King Charles and Camilla were married in a civil ceremony in 2005, after dating previously in the early 70s.

Many people were moved by his words, with expat Brian Thomas commenting that it was “a very moving speech.” Another Spanish resident Patricia Green also said “beautiful speech, my heart went out to him” and Sue Markham de

FOLLOWING his recent accession to the throne, King Charles certainly has a lot of events in his calendar and re sponsibilities to carry out as England’s new monarch.

Crowds gathered around Buckingham Palace.

As an observant critic of modernist architecture, Charles worked on the construction of Poundbury in Dorset, a town of low‐rise streetscapes built to hu man scale, which is home to some 4,200 people.

As King, already Charles and the Queen Consort have travelled to the Houses of Parliament to receive their condolences for the passing of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II. This was the first visit on their national tour of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II.

Next, Charles led a procession of his mother’s coffin at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, where he also attended a prayer service at St Giles Cathedral, before re turning to the place for an audience with SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon.

Much like Queen Elizabeth reigned alongside her loving hus band Philip, Charles’ intention to work with his wife in order to serve the country was obvious in his first address, in which he declared that he will “count on the loving help of my darling wife Camilla.”

Queen Consort

After completing his studies, Charles served his country in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy between the years 1971‐1976.

Camilla reportedly has “a wicked sense of humour,” and is “great” to work for, so no doubt she’ll make an excellent Queen Consort alongside King Charles.

The couple then travelled to Belfast to view an exhi bition on the Queen’s association with Northern Ire land, which involved meeting with the leading political

the death of Queen Elizabeth II, her eldest son has become King Charles III, beginning his reign with a pre‐record ed national speech at Buckingham Palace on Friday,

On Wednesday September 14, the King led the proces sion to Westminster Hall where the Queen’s body is to be laid for four days prior to her funeral so that the public can pay their respects.

Many EWN readers have expressed how Camilla’s subse quent accession is what the queen would have wanted. One commenter is Helen Winslade, who writes that “It was actu ally Her Majesty the Queen herself who stated it was her wish that Camilla become Queen Consort when Charles be comes King to thank Camilla for all her hard work and loyalty.”

Following the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Thursday, September 8, 73‐year‐old Charles became the UK’s new monarch, heralding a new Carolean era. The new King had been heir apparent since the age of three, when his mother took to the throne in 1952. An ardent advocate for environmental protection during his time as the Prince of Wales, Charles III is now expected to take a more neutral stance in his new role as monarch.

As Prince of Wales, a role he took on in 1969, Charles founded the Prince’s Trust Charity in 1976, an organisation that helps young people be tween the ages of 11 and 30 get into jobs, education and training.

King Charles’ busy schedule

AS Charles becomes king following the death of his beloved mother, his faithful wife of 17 years Camilla, will stand by his side as Queen Consort.

On Friday September 16, Charles and Camilla will visit Wales to receive another motion of con dolence at the Welsh parliament and at tend a service at Llandaff Cathedral, Cardiff.

Behind the crown

As an environmentalist, Charles has also supported organic farming and other ac tion to reduce the impact of climate change, delivering his first official speech on the issue 52 years ago in 1970.

KING CHARLES is the late Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest son of four chil dren, and father to William, Prince of Wales, and Harry, Duke of Sus sex.He was born at Buckingham Palace, London on November 14, 1948, making him 73 years old now. He attended schools in London, Hamp shire and Scotland before carrying out a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Cambridge.

European energy ministers met on Friday, September 9 to flesh out proposals to contain energy price inflation and to sup port households and businesses through a price cap.

ICELAND is the latest com pany to halt expansion say ing their energy costs had risen by £20m (€20.3m).

Rising interest rates are good news for savers, with deposit rates having sat at zero for around a decade. The rise will, it is hoped, result in more people saving and less people bor rowing. Many economists still believe that slowing down spending and increas ing saving will go a long way in slow ing down the rate of inflation. How ever it remains to be seen whether the current hike proves that theory or whether it pushes the bloc into re cession, with much of the inflation across all sectors due to the crisis in Ukraine and the steep rise in energy costs.

Driving the slowdown is the rising cost of living fuelled by spiralling energy and food costs, whilst business is also being hit by supply and staff shortages and the rising cost of raw Preliminarymaterials.figures for July show inflation above 10 per cent and growth barely 0.2 per cent, half original forecasts.

Strikes cancelled UK heading for recession

Royal Mail workers were due to begin a 48hour strike on Friday September 9, but was cancelled at the last minute according to the General Secretary of the Communication Workers Union, Dave Ward.

Energy ministers are to hold another emergency meeting to agree the proposed plans to rake off excess revenue.

He said: “Following the very sad news of the passing of the Queen, and out of respect for her service to the country and her family, the union has decided to call off tomorrow’s planned strike action.”

THE EU is to skim excess energy company revenues rather than impose a price cap such as the one opted for in the UK.

The move announced on Septem ber 8 was expected, although some experts thought the increase might be lower as the Commission moves to halt the rise in energy prices.

HELLO, I have to give my opin ion re ‘rear view fines’ as sug gested by the DGT.

We fought to prevent those people taking over a beautiful and successful country, but the Russians’ influence over Harold Wilson etc, ruined that.

WELL done Leapy!! Totally agree with all you say about the media and its bias.

It’s about time motorists now stood firm and made firm objections to some of the idi otic money making rules that are spoiling the joys of motor ing.

YOUR PAPER - YOUR VOICE - YOUR OPINION

This means borrowing and spending more but for pen sioners, especially those in Spain who haven’t benefited from the energy support, the matter of the triple lock promise is looming in many minds.

So, with the WASPI women still receiving no compensa tion from the lack of advance notice of the increase in pen sion age from the Department and Works and Pensions as confirmed by the Ombudsman and now the threat of no triple lock safety, it rather looks as if the so-called levellingup policy is going to miss a significant percentage of the population.

NO TRIPLE LOCK OUR VIEW

We have been proven right by the way the two successive Zimbabwean governments since 1981 have destroyed practically everything by milking the system financially, putting unqualified relatives and friends in places of high office and ‘switching off’ the infrastructure that maintained hospitals, schools, transport, power, wa ter etc. The current president, the ‘Crocodile’ Manangagwa, like Mugabe, goes nowhere without armed guards and takes expensive flights.

So are the DGT saying all these vehicles are a danger as they do not have an internal rear view mirror thus obstruct ed rear views??

MY family have been repairing and restoring clocks for over 60 years be tween us, as were our grandparents beforeManythat.ofthe timepieces that pass through our oil‐stained hands have a story attached to them.

The scene on the dial represents the words of this folk song. The wife is busy making sausages, the door is open, and the robbers are eating the food. One robber wields a knife, and proposes to shave off the man’s beard. The wife was so stubborn that she was about to be molested but refused to speak for fear of losing the pact with her husband. The lesson is no good comes from being obstinate.

We still have this (lucky) clock, saved from the brink of a skip. In our care its future is secure for now. Our ancestors were horologists in the Lancashire town of Prescot, which, in the 1800s, was renowned internationally for mak ing the finest pocket watches money could buy at the time. Visitors can to this day see examples of watchmakers’ cottages that preceded the mass manu facturing that later took place in the Lancashire Watch Company.
