The Department of Animal Protection has decided to extend the contract for the provision of veterinary services for the local shelter. They will increase sterilisations by 837, taking the 350 sterilised stray or parts, so a patient can be given the particular component they need. This makes the most of every blood donation, as the components in one unit of blood (or one donation) can be used to treat different patients. cats figure to 1,187. The project has a budget of €54,000.

The town hall confirmed that it was necessary for a good coexistence with the neighbours, as a way of minimising the incidence of cat colonies on wildlife in certain areas, and for the well­being of these feline colonies and proper public health.

ORIHUELA received a special guest of honour on Friday, January 20. The Nobel Prize winning chemist, Roald Hoffmann was in the city to present a Spanish translation of a collection of his poems, many of which are based on chemical knowledge.

Hoffman met with city officials in a visit to Orihuela City Hall, where he signed the city’s Book of Honour. He was in the city to present his unique collection of poems and visit various different educational centres to inspire young people.

The 85­year­old won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1981 for his work in applying quantum mechanical theories to predict chemical reactions. The Polish­born chemist later became a professor at Cornell University in New York state in the US.

Orihuela City Council has bought 100 copies of the renowned chemist’s books, which will be given to local schools to inspire a new generation of scientists in the city.

The poetry collection puts a unique twist of the scientific discipline, and could interest new learners.
