AFTER a five-year pause, Almeria City Council announced on Wednesday, March 1 that the city’s airport will once again have a weekly direct connection with the German city of Dusseldorf. The province will regain a direct connection with one of its most important trade and tourism markets with a route beginning in May and running until well into the autumn. This connection is the result of lengthy talks between representatives in both locations to increase the number of tourists travelling to the destination and increase international connections offered by Almeria airport. The move would generate similar passenger numbers as before the pandemic. Thanks to the decision, from Friday, May 12 until Friday, October 20, Almeria airport will run flights with 360 seats available weekly to fly between the city and Dusseldorf. German tourists, along with British, Belgian, Dutch, and French, have been some of the most important visitors in helping the region stand out as one of the most popular holiday destinations in southern Europe.

The recovery of this connection is a sign of hope for the tourism industry in the area, which was hit hard by the pandemic.
