ALMERIA hit a milestone in connectivity between the city and its port with the opening of the Cable Inglés, an old mineral loading dock, on Tuesday, April 4. The restoration of this piece of industrial architecture is the first of many projects in the Puerto Ciudad initiative which aims to revitalise the city’s relationship with its port.

The restoration of the Cable Inglés was part of the second phase of the port’s transformation, which was partially financed by the Ministry of Transport who contributed to the project’s total budget which reached a total of €2.7 million.

At the reopening ceremony on Tuesday, the mayor of Almeria, María del Mar Vázquez, praised the restoration of the dock as a significant achievement for the city, helping to enrich its urban and architectural heritage. She also em phasised how this project would help to reestablish the city’s relationship with its maritime area, providing the city with new opportunities.

The opening of the restored dock marks a new chapter in Almeria’s history, one that promises to enhance the city’s cultural appeal and boost tourism opportunities, while also serving as a symbol of the city’s modernity.

Alba Necrópolis of Almeria

EXCAVATIONS are underway at three of the tombs in the megalithic necrópolos in Los Milanes in the Almeria region. Important discoveries have been made that can help archaeologists understand the people that lived in this region 5,000 years ago. This important site is registered in the General Catalog of Andalucian Historical Heritage as BIC (Asset of Cultural Interest). The Culture delegate stated ‘These are Tholoi-type collective tombs with a corridor and a chamber covered with a false dome, belonging to the Chalcolithic period.’ The excavations have already revealed surprising results. They have uncovered a funeral ritual that they had been unaware of in the southeast of Spain until now: cremation. Cremated remains have been uncovered in these tomes in urns. The GEA research group is now focusing its investigations on this area. They plan to use Carbon 14 to date the new findings more precisely. The delegate for Tourism, Culture, and Sport José Angel Vélez along with the mayor of Alba Antonio Fernández recently visited the archaeological site to offer their support.
