Decarbonising the sea
THE Balearic Islands government plans to decarbonise the sea with electric boats and renewable energy.
This was the main gist of the BlueWeek forum that took place for the first time in Palma last week, aimed at discussing the ‘blue economy’, innovation in the maritime sector, maritime energies and decarbonisation.
The event was inaugurated by regional vicepresident and Energy Transition councillor Juan
Pedro Yllanes, who highlighted the Govern’s commitment to renewable marine energy sources to diversify the region’s supply model and attain energetic sovereignty.
“The maritime sector can contribute to the transition towards more sustainable and cleaner energy sources through marine renewable energy production. This includes offshore wind, wave and tidal energy, among others,” declared Sr Yllana.
The Director General of
Proverb Of The Week
Energy and Climate Change, Pep Malagrava, said: “The electrification of ports and ships is a vital step in the process of decarbonisation of the Islands. We are aware that the maritime transport sector, and also the air transport sector, are major emitters of gases into the atmosphere, and therefore, any process that can be carried out using the necessary tools and resources to reduce these emissions is welcome.”
