throughout the region to dissuade pigeons from occupying historical buildings and to keep them away from town and city centres. With their infallible vision detecting prey from a great distance it is an effective and fast hunter (flying at up to 390km/hour).

This type of biological control has been implemented in other regions in Spain with success and Murcia will now follow suit with the first two falcons planned for release in June of this year.

While the falcons sleep, bats will patrol at night appearing just after sunset and eating almost 1,000 insects per hour, especially mosquitos. The government plans to maintain the project shelters for bats to help control the population of mosquitos in the region.

Ghost driver

A GHOST driver surprised the residents of Caravaca de la Cruz on Friday, May 5 during the town festivities. After the procession of the Holy Relic up to the basilica, hundreds of locals were waiting to see the firework display to end the Fiestas de la Vera Cruz an incident occurred around Plaza Tuzzla and the Cuesta de la Plaza. A vehicle collided with the security fences and after crashing past a bollard it continued on and crashed into the exit wall of an underground car park located under the square landing on its bonnet. Luckily no one was harmed, the car itself was empty!

LA LLANA BEACH in San Pedro del Pinatar will receive a €1 million investment with the aim to regenerate the beach. The beach loses one metre of surface area per year around 12,000 cubic metres of sand annually since the 1950s when the port was built.

In recent storms, the beach shrunk so much the waves reached the drying pools of the salt works, endangering the industrial activity that maintains the Salinas Natural Park.

The plan is to construct a breakwater about 150 metres long and approximately 200 metres from the beach. They also plan to add 34,000 square metres of sand.

San Javier Airport

THE former facilities of the San Javier airport will host the Centre for Research and Conservation of Species of the Mar Menor. The General Directorate of the Mar Menor of the Regional Ministry for the Environment has already begun the first steps to ensure that the old arrivals terminal will be used to house the aquariums and the scientific work that will allow the conservation of the seahorse and nacre in the Mar Menor.
