No to closure

ON Tuesday May 16, various organisations, friends, volunteers and workers of the Ojen Ecological Reserve stood outside at the doors of the Environmental Council in Malaga for three hours before delivering more than 50,000 signatures collected in support of their work.

A petition to save the Malaga nature reserve is garnering support online since being published earlier this year.

The petition was created after the Andalucian government issued an order for the permanent closure of Ojen Eco Reserve, a cherished protected natural wildlife centre.

The move would be a devastating blow to conservation efforts, causing the expulsion of approximately 100 rescued and nurtured animals.

A group of environmentalists who created the petition want to create dialogue with the Ministry for the Environment and are urging them to reconsider the closure.

In a case dating back more than a year now, the regional government cited minor violations of regulations including on fire safety to issue a warrant for the closure of the site. Officials at the centre say these issues could be resolved if volunteers and staff were given time from Front page and dialogue with the regional government.

Before the order for the permanent closure, the centre had been temporarily closed to the public. Selfless staff continued to care for the animals despite not being paid and volunteers being banned. The petition can be found online: https://www.change.org
