Traditional celebration

THE towns of El Trapiche and Los Pepones in VelezMalaga were a hub of excitement and cultural celebrations as they hosted their traditional Romeria festivals over the weekend.

These traditional religious celebrations saw locals pay homage to San Isidro Labrador and the Inmaculada saints, with pilgrimage processions that captivated locals and visitors alike on Saturday, May 20 and Sunday, May 21.

THE renowned musical trio ‘Habana Vieja’ is preparing to take to the stage at Almuñecar’s Casa de la Cultura in a performance on Thursday, June 1, bringing a sensational medley of Cuban music to town.

Hitting the stage in the auditorium with their infectious rhythms from 7pm, Habana Vieja promises to deliver the very best of Cuban music in a lively performance. Organised by the Friends of El Trapiche Association and the Ermita de Los Pepones Association, the festivities were a testament to the rich heritage of the region with locals turning out in traditional Andalucian flamenco dress for the occasion. El Trapiche saw a lively religious procession, led by the renowned ‘Coro Romero de El Trapiche’ choir which left the parish church and wound around the town’s streets before culminating at the scenic Benamocarra School Farm.

Meanwhile, Los Pepones saw a heartfelt pilgrimage from the chapel to the town’s river, followed by a community meal at the picturesque Benamargosa River.

The events concluded with solemn masses before the return processions, leaving lasting memories of cherished traditions and the traditional spirit of VelezMalaga.

Their carefully curated repertoire includes beloved classics such as ‘Guantanamera’, ‘Che comandante’, ‘La Negra Tomasa’, and ‘El camisón de Pepa’. Audiences will be transported straight to the heart of the Caribbean by their stirring performance.

The concert marks the beginning of a vibrant cultural programme for the month of June.
