Porsche & golf Deceptive advert
TOYOTA has been ordered to withdraw the ‘deceptive’ Corolla Cross Hybrid advert. A complaint that was filed by a consumer to the Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) has resulted in Toyota having to withdraw the ad.
Toyota was accused of misleading customers by creating the impression that the car is readily available when in fact there is a waiting list of up to 24 months. The phrase that consumers complained about was ‘The Corolla Cross GRSport Hybrid is here!’
Toyota initially denied the claim, then later acknowledged the issue saying the waiting pe riod is due to a global hybrid battery shortage that is expected to normalise by 2024. The ARB investigated the claims and came to the conclusion that the advert is in fact misleading. It noted that ‘the absence of disclaimers or limitations contributed to the expectation that the vehicle was generally available to purchase.’
The ARB acknowledged the challenges but advised that companies still have a responsibility to be clear when advertising. Consequently, the ARB ordered Toyota to withdraw or appropriately amend their advert to inform customers about the possibility of a long waiting period.
