THE 17th­century cloister of Santo Domingo in Lorca that was damaged in the earthquake in 2011 is nearing a completion date of its restoration. Approximately 600 stone pieces were removed after the earthquake and over the years those pieces have been reassembled like a huge complex puzzle. It is now 12 years since the earthquake and the restoration should be complete in two months. The lower section of the arcade has now been assembled using traditional techniques.

Due to some archaeological findings during the restoration, the Dominican cloister will be different once completed. The cloister has been detached from the buildings that were built in the 1980s as they have concluded that this contributed to the collapse of one of the sections during the earthquake. A concrete supporting structure of the same size and shape as the arches has been created where the arches are anchored with seismic anchors.

Calblanque rescue

A TEACHER and his students got into trouble in the waters of Calblanque Beach. The emergency services rescued the teacher and one student that could not get to shore. Some of the students needed to be treated for injuries caused by hitting the rocks. Everyone in the group was rescued and went home safe and sound.
