CARTAGENA’S Tourism

Soars to New Heights in Record­Breaking 2023. The museums of Cartagena Port of Cultures have welcomed over 200,000 tourists in the first five months alone, indicating a remarkable increase of nearly 40 per cent compared to the previous year. Even more impressively, this figure represents a growth of almost 11 per cent when compared to 2019.

Among the months of the year so far, April stands out with more than 65,000 people exploring the cultural offerings of Cartagena. May followed closely behind, florists, and photographers along with shops, bars, and restaurants. This is a big plus for the area and the local businesses that are always looking for ways to extend the high season. with nearly 50,000 visitors. However, it is the Roman Theatre that truly steals the spotlight, accounting for 34.5 per cent of visits to the museums and archaeological sites of Puerto de Culturas. This iconic landmark alone has welcomed over 91,000 visitors, reflecting an impressive increase of 31 per cent compared to 2022 and 3 per cent compared to the record­breaking year of 2019.

The beaches cannot be used from June 15 to September 15.

Individual tourists constitute the majority, accounting for 66 per cent of all visits with 41 per cent being international visitors, 31 per cent being domestic tourists, and 28 per cent being regional tourists.

With an impressive increase in tourism compared to previous years, Cartagena’s cultural heritage continues to captivate travellers from around the world.
