Black flag

ENVIRONMENTALIST organisation Ecologistas en Acción has published its yearly report condemning the worst cases of pollution and bad environmental management in Spain.

Among this year’s surprises is a ‘black flag’ awarded to the Colonia de Sant Jordi due to the controversial party yachts that made headlines following complaints by residents and businesses due to loud noises late at night.

Ses Salines Council last week announced a new public ordinance regulating the beaches in the Colonia de Sant Jordi to prevent the problems reported in previous years.

Among other restrictions, the new legislation bans the use of music equipment, radios, musical instruments or loudspeakers that may cause a nuisance to beach users.

Ecologistas en Acción also points out that jetskis are a problem not just because of the noise they make, but also because they pose a threat to swimmers, as well as to ‘fragile species’ such as sea turtles in protected areas.
