Cave warning
EXPERTS are warning that the construction of a new house in the urbanisation above Pas de Vallgornera cave in Llucmajor could increase the risk of collapse.
Vallgornera cave is a protected site included in the Natura 2000 programme and considered a unique reference in the world due to its more than 65,000 square metres of galleries and 10,000 metres of lakes.
The Balearic Islands Environment commission

has issued a warning that the building work could affect the cave underneath due to the vibrations caused by the traffic of heavy vehicles.
Furthermore, the commission believes that the construction project could become a ‘constant source of pollution in case of filtrations’ and affect the cave’s characteristics due to changes to the surface currents.
This is not the first time the Environment commission has alerted about these dangers, as it already issued a similar report last year due to the construction of two single family homes in the area.

THE National Police and leading holiday rental platform Airbnb have issued a list of guidelines for travellers to avoid falling prey to scams.
A press release issued by the police warns that online holiday bookers must never follow links to apparently officiallooking sites through emails, other websites, text messages or posts on social networks, as fraudsters often replicate websites to trick users.
If an offer seems too good to be true, it could be a scam, warn the authorities, adding “be wary of offers that combine excessively low prices with very attractive images of accommodation. We can assess the experience of other users by carefully reading reviews, as well as checking that the host’s identity and other account details have been verified or confirmed by the site.”

Regarding online payment, the National Police advise to “pay by card and through the platform. Beware if you are offered to pay outside the platform or through money remittance companies, bank cheques or money orders.”
Regarding booking through Airbnb, the site insists that users “stay on Airbnb to book, pay and communicate with the landlord to take advantage of the site’s secure processes, refund policies and support. If someone asks you to leave the platform, please notify the Support service.”
Finally, other warning signs to look out for include landlords who claim not to be in Spain or near the property at the moment, seeming ‘too professional’ and attempting to steal the client’s identity by sending a rental contract and requesting a copy of the ID at the beginning of the reservation process, and ‘always being in a hurry and demanding a quick response’.

Meaning people do things more quickly and easily when they work together. A very ancient proverb known to both the Greeks and the Romans – it first appeared in English by John Heywood in 1546.
So far the ‘Operation Summer’ force, consisting of both uniformed and plainclothed officers, has already arrested more than 50 people for petty theft in Mallorca, ie when the amount or items stolen are less than €400.

The authorities warn that most of these thefts take place on the beach at night, when tourists go for midnight swims or have sexual relations on the sand.
Another favourite target are hotel clients who leave their belongings at reception or by the entrance of the establishment.
