Storing DIY tools

WHETHER you have a modest set of DIY tools, such as paint and brushes, to perform simple tasks and updates to your home, or a large tool kit that would make any decorating expert jealous, it’s essential to store your items appropriately. Common DIY supply storage errors result in destroyed materials and tools that are no longer functional, as well as possible safety issues from improper storage.

Storing products next to radi ators is not only detrimental to the quality of your products, but also dangerous. When radiators heat up, any adjacent liquids and soluble substances are at risk of altering con sistency because of the increased temperature

Additionally, aerosols, for example, can quickly overheat and expand, causing their containers to explode, rupture, or even blow up, endangering every one in the house and inflicting damage to walls, furniture, and other goods.

Experts also warn against storing your DIY products in bathroom cabinets. Anywhere with increased moisture and damp air can spoil liquid supplies like paint and glue. Cabinets and cupboards that aren't subject to changes in temperature are ideal for storing your decorating essentials.

Stacking supplies, such as cans of paint, on top of each other or too close together can cause serious injury or damage as well as leading to spillages and leaks. Instead, create compact shelving that provides a firm platform for each heavy object, making them less prone to move around.

It’s also essential to clean your tools before storing them, however tempting it may be to store paint brushes without washing them first. After cleaning them by soaking in water, put paint brushes in a jar with the handles down, or hang on the wall or pegboard to maintain the bristles.
