History comes alive
YOU would be forgiven for thinking you walked through a time machine into the 18th century in the town of Macharaviaya on Saturday, July 1. The town celebrated its historical links with the US with an incredible Independence Day party.
The village celebrated Bernardo de Gálvez, born and raised in Macharaviaya, but also an American Civil War hero.
To commemorate Gálvez’s contributions to the Civil War, Macharaviaya organised a reenactment
Proverb Of The Week
of the Battle of Pensacola this year, enlisting the help of local history groups. Guests from across the region joined in, dressing in period costume, including a group from Nerja Council.
This year’s celebrations were dedicated to the state of Texas, with a special delegation from the state attending. The historical reenactment was followed by an incredible firework display.
Around 4,000 people joined in the celebrations on Saturday, a mean feat for a town with just 500 residents throughout the rest of the year.
“Actions speak louder than words”
Means that what someone actually does means more than what they say they will do. This saying has been traced back to a sermon in 1200, first quoted by St Anthony of Padua.
Atencia urged residents to take advantage of the classes which are led by talented and trained instructors and also allow participants to bask in the beauty of Axarquia’s coastline.
The classes began on Monday, July 3 and will continue throughout July and August. “We’ve listened to the wishes of our community,” Atencia added, “and we’re excited to provide yoga and pilates sessions that will enrich your beachside experience.”
Pilates classes will be held on Torre del Mar’s beaches on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8.30am to 9.30am at the Playa Senior area. Yoga enthusiasts can enjoy classes at the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
In La Caleta de Velez, pilates classes are scheduled for Mondays and Wednesdays from 8pm to 9pm, while yoga sessions will take place at the same time on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
