Centre evacuated

“This outstanding achievement shows that Fuengirola is a premier tourist destination. The numbers surpass regional averages and improve on last year’s records, highlighting the town’s continued growth and appeal,” explained José Luis Ponce, the local councillor for Tourism.

The surge in visitors extends beyond hotels. The new Tourist Office in Theresa Zabell Square experienced a magnificent 42.5 per cent increase in visitors compared to 2022. Tourist Information workers helped 3,555 tourists with questions about Fuengirola’s attraction last month.

Ponce attributed the increase to the office’s excellent location on the bustling seafront and its continued efforts to improve services.

Additionally, Fuengirola’s cultural attractions saw a boost, with the Roman site at Finca del Secretario attracting 27.67 per cent more visitors compared to June 2022.

SHOPPERS and staff at Miramar shopping centre in Fuengirola had to be evacuated from one floor on Monday, June 10 after an electric meter fault in one of the shops on the upper level.

As soon as officials became aware of the fault, they called the emergency services and followed safety procedures to evacuate all shoppers and staff from the affected floor. Thanks to the fast response from firefighters and shopping centre staff, the fire safety systems worked as they should, and there was no damage beyond the store’s electric meter.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the incident, and the shopping centre remained open for business.

Officials from the shopping centre empha sised that the safety of visitors is their top priority, and they were pleased with how quickly and smoothly the evacuation went.

While the electrical fault caused some disruption, the rapid response from officials and the effectiveness of the fire safety systems meant that visitors were able to return soon after.
