Turtle watch

MARBELLA organisation, ProDunas, has issued a call for volunteers to keep watch over the loggerhead sea turtle nest at Nueva Andalucia beach.

The mission is to ensure safe nesting and hatching of the eggs, a process that will take around 45 to 60 days. This is an exciting moment for Marbella, as baby sea turtles are about to make an appearance for the second time in three years. Authorities announced that turtles had laid a total of 69 eggs on Saturday, July 8. Of these, eight will go to Fuengirola BIOPARC where they will be cared for by experts, but the rest will remain on Nueva Andalucia beach until they hatch.

While the monitoring programme began on Wednesday, July 12, volunteers are still welcome to sign up. Anyone wanting to sign up can do so via the form online: https://produnas.org/tortugamarinacustodia.

All registered volunteers will receive a Volunteer Accreditation, which they can keep on their phones. There will be environmental supervisors on hand as well as Local Police.

Marbella City Council has set up comfortable tents, tables, and chairs to provide extra comfort and shelter from the sun and damp nights.
