Drought defeat

DURING a meeting on Thursday, July 6, the mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz praised the regional government’s determination to tackle the current drought headon.

Highlighting the Junta de Andalucia’s efforts, Muñoz shared positive news about a major project underway: the expansion of Marbella’s desalination plant.

The plant’s capacity is set to double, going from five to six cubic hectometres to a whopping 10 to 12 cubic hectometres once the project is completed. With an investment of nearly €3 million, the upgrade is scheduled to finish by summer 2024.

Joined by Minister Carmen Crespo, Regional Government Delegate Patricia Navarro, and officials from neighbouring towns, Muñoz stressed the importance of this investment for the region.

Muñoz also shed light on the municipality’s rigorous efforts in water conservation, explaining, “We’re nearing the target set by the regional government of reducing water consumption by 10 per cent. We’re achieving this by cutting down on irrigation, using recycled water sources, and using nondrinking water sources for street cleaning.”

Navarro added, “Water is the lifeblood of our economy,” urging residents to be responsible with water use.
