China connectivity
MADRID has already recovered 83 per cent of the Chinese destinations with which it had air connections before the pandemic and, foreseeably, will reach 100 per cent in 2024. This was highlighted by the councillor for Tourism, Almudena Maíllo, who confirmed that Madrid City Council Tourism Department is working on improving air connectivity with the Asian country to recover prepandemic levels. Currently, there are four cities connected to Madrid: Beijing; Chongqing; Hong Kong and Shanghai, and next August the MadridHanzou route will open. China is a fundamental source market for Madrid, given that these travellers have a longer average stay than others, of more than five days, and a very high average daily expense, which is around €370.
For this reason: “We are working to improve the experience of the Chinese visitor, from the moment they arrive in the city and throughout their stay,” explained Maíllo.
