Blazing trails

ESTEPONA Council’s hiking programme has been given a nod of approval from the Spanish Youth Institute, INJUVE, and has been included in the institute’s Catalogue of Local Experiences for Working with Young People in 2023.

The recognition is a source of pride for Estepona’s council, as it confirms that the programme has inspired other towns in Spain interested in offering youthoriented initiatives.

Launched in 2013, the Educational Hiking Programme offers healthy activities for primary and secondary school students, including hiking in various locations around Estepona. It received the prestigious approval on Thursday, July 13.

The routes are guided by two experts who provide valuable information about the area, promoting environmental conservation and offering knowledge about basic hiking skills, values, and helping to develop social skills.

Around 3,500 primary students participate each year in the 70 excursions offered as part of the programme from November to May. The programme highlights Estepona’s natural beauty and cultural and historical values, building a sense of community and environmental responsibility among the students.

Estepona’s Educational Hiking Programme is a shining example of a successful initiative that promotes healthy activity and values education for young people.
