Trailblazing against drought

BENALMADENA has been described as a pioneer in the region thanks to its measures to deal with the severe shortage of drinking water due to drought.

The 11 towns that form part of the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol, met with ACOSOL, which manages water resources, on Thursday, July 13. According to local councillor Juan Olea, “The meeting revealed that Benalmadena is a trailblazer in the region, as it has already put the Drought Decree into place. We have also launched a campaign to raise awareness among residents to reduce drinking water consumption by 10 per cent, and taken measures to reduce the use of drinking water for cleaning by 35 per cent.”

The ACOSOL meeting also discussed using recycled water for cleaning and irrigation. The next step is for all municipalities to tell ACOSOL how much recycled water they need and what specific plans they have developed.
