MIJAS Local Police have been busy clearing out unlawfully squatted properties in the first half of 2023. Their Special Housing Eviction Unit removed nearly 50 people from illegally occupied homes so far this year according to figures released on Wednesday, July 26.

The special unit was created just over a year ago to address the problem, which is affecting all of Spain.

Officers respond rapidly to homeowner reports and work to identify squatters. Their protocol involves immediately investigating claims, interviewing owners, identifying offenders, and turning them over to courts and the Guardia Civil.

Efforts have also intensified in neighbourhoods with many holiday homes which are often vacant during the winter. Over a dozen evictions have already taken place this summer as the unit ramped up patrols. With around 150 officers covering 149 square kilometres and 93,000 residents, their task is challenging, but important.

To report illegal occupation of a property in Mijas, call the Local Police emergency line on 952 460 808 or 112. The dedicated unit helps owners reclaim their homes as quickly as possible.
