EL EJIDO Town Council has officially approved the Virgen de Las Mercedes as a Fiesta of Local Tourist Interest.

This is an event which attracts numerous tourists and visitors every year. The aim is to establish the procession as a day of veneration, leisure and recreation for locals, visitors and tourists.

The Councillor for Culture confirmed: “It is a festival that helps to build tourist loyalty and to consolidate El Ejido as a different tourist destination, whose offer goes beyond the traditional sun and beach destinations.”

She added: “This type of initiative favours and stimulates the local business sector, tourism and services, as the influx of visitors is considerable, which implies an increase in consumption at all levels, our religious and cultural traditions must be promoted and preserved.”

The Virgen de las Mercedes, Patron Saint of Balerma, is celebrated on August 15, the same day as the Assumption of Our Lady.
