BUDDING Kasparovs and Fishers will need to move quickly to enjoy watching the 37th night chess championship which takes place in Estepona tonight Thursday August 10.

It’s the only amateur competition of its kind that takes place anywhere in Spain and has 250 competitors registered who are aged from six to 90.

Expect not just local players but many from across Andalucia and Spain, the younger ones perhaps inspired by Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit.

This competition will be held, as in previous years, following the Swiss competition system. It will have 12 professional referees and a total of 26 trophies to be competed for in a range of different categories, as well as a number of commemorative medals.

It’s not just about competition as there are six giant outdoor chess boards with matching sized pieces along the Paseo Maritimo and there are regular matches, many of them relying on speed, managed by the Municipal Chess School as well as evening coaching for beginners and those who want to get better.

Traditional dress

THE Malaga Provincial Council and the Association of Shopkeepers of the Historic Centre of Malaga­Centro Comercial Abierto are collaborating to promote the sale of products related to Malaga Fashion.

It’s a bit of a blends of modern ideas for traditional clothing and the idea is that Malaga de Moda will be promoted particularly at the time of fairs and festivals held annually throughout the Province.

There will be a sharing of marketing skills in order to attract customers who want to dress up for regional events, especially those involved with flamenco, marenga (fishing) and traditional Goyesca which is generally associated with bullfighting with the intent that Malaga City becomes the first place to think of when looking to buy traditional Andalucian costumes.
