Theatre network

THE Andalucian Network of Public Theatres, managed by the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport, through the Andalucian Agency of Cultural Institutions, will be present in eight municipalities in the province of Malaga this year, in which it allocates the largest budget to date. The municipalities of Marbella, Nerja, Alhaurin el Grande, Villanueva del Rosario, Coín, Torremolinos, Ronda and Alhaurin de la Torre will be part of the network next year. These are in addition to the 63 in the rest of the Andalucian provinces. In total, the programme will have a budget of €1,150,000, an investment 15 per cent higher than in 2023 and, “the biggest commitment of the Regional Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport for the Network, which has established itself as the backbone of culture in our community and the driving force behind the economic activity of the Andalucian cultural industry,” said the Minister, Arturo Bernal. The main objective is to bring theatre, circus, music and dance shows to the stages of the municipalities, facilitating the access of the population to the performing arts and contributing to the development of the Andalucian business fabric of the cultural sector. The number of shows to be programmed in the catalogue has been increased by 114 new proposals for music, theatre, dance and circus. Those that finally become part of the catalogue are chosen by the Agency and the municipalities in two periods of the year. In 2023, 615 theatre, dance, circus and music performances took place within the network.

the councillor for Culture, Rodrigo Romero. Queens of the Stone Age is a rock band from Palm Desert, California, United States. The band is frequently labelled stoner rock, although they reject the label. They developed a style of riff-oriented, heavy music which the band’s founder and master-

mind Josh Homme described as “robot rock”, saying that he “wanted to create a heavy sound based on a solid jam, just pound it into your head”. Since then, their sound has evolved to incorporate a variety of different styles and influences. Queens of the Stone Age formed in 1997 and began

playing together during the now legendary Desert Sessions. Queens of the Stone Age have gone through many line-up changes since first breaking into the hard rock scene. Dave Grohl recorded drums, percussion and backing vocals on Songs for the Deaf and toured in support of the album in 2002 before returning to the Foo Fighters. Their most recent line-up includes: Josh Homme (guitar, vocals), Troy Van Leeuwen (guitar, lap steel, keyboards, backing vocals), Jon Theodore (drums, percussion), Michael Shuman (bass, backing vocals), and Dean Fertita (keyboards, guitar, backing vocals).

Starlite in Estepona

STARLITE is planning a multi-purpose venue in Estepona with similar characteristics to the La Cantera de Nagüeles venue in Marbella, but with four times the capacity, which will allow it to host large concerts and have a stage for filming. Located next to the Selwo Aventura Park and surrounded by green spaces, the future Starlite of Estepona will have an auditorium with a capacity for 15,000 people, (the Marbella venue has a capacity for 3,500), a hotel, a conference centre, a lake and an artificial quarry, a tribute to the original site where the festival was born. The project will be built on just over 11 hectares, already owned by Starlite’s promoter, in an area known as La Panera and will include complementary facilities such as a dance and singing school, according to Estepona Town Hall, which has expressed its support for the project.

STARLITE: Planning a much bigger venue in Estepona.

Unlike the one in Marbella, the facilities of the future Starlite Music World will be permanent and can be transformed to adapt to different events. The idea of its promoters is to expand what already exists in La Cantera to compete also at the level of large concerts. Starlite was a pioneer in bringing big music stars to the Costa del Sol but in

recent years it has faced direct competition from festivals and venues with larger capacity such as Marenostrum Fuengirola, which started in 2016, or the festival at La Cala de Mijas, which started in 2022, with which it has had to compete for artists and audiences. In order to provide the Costa del Sol with stages for filming, Estepona is

also thinking of creating an audiovisual city in which different recording studios and sets will be set up, of between 1,500 and 3,000 square metres each, with warehouses for equipment and internal service areas. The Starlite Music World, for which an investment of close to €300 million is estimated, bears a similarity to the future performing arts centre of the city of Málaga, the Sohrlin Andalucía, recently presented by Antonio Banderas and which will begin operating in March 2024. Although it has been considered of strategic interest by the Junta de Andalucía and has the approval of the local administration, the Starlite project still needs to go through urban and environmental planning processes as well as addressing matters such as security, lighting, water and waste management, and the resolution of logistical issues such as transport.

Musical Malaga Photo: Teatro del Soho CaixaBank

THE musical ‘They’re Playing our Song’ (Tocando nuestra canción), a romantic comedy full of music and laughter directed by Antonio Banderas opens in June at the Soho Theatre in Malaga. The premiere of the Soho CaixaBank Theatre’s fourth musical will come in June 2024 with ‘They’re Playing our Song’, a show directed by Antonio Banderas and starring Miquel Fernández and María Adamuz, based on the hit Broadway classic. Rehearsals for this new production will begin in the spring and tickets are already on sale. ‘They’re Playing our Song’, by Neil Simon, music by Marvin Hamlisch, lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager, is a romantic, tender and crazy musical comedy, which narrates the relationship between Vernon Gersch, a successful composer and a sentimental failure, and Sonia Walsk, an unknown lyricist, hooked on a toxic relationship with her ex-boyfriend, whom she is unable to leave completely.

ROMANTIC COMEDY: They’re Playing our Song is opening in June at the Soho Theatre.

Inspired by the real-life romance back in the day of composer Marvin Hamlisch and lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, Neil Simon’s libretto reveals the bittersweet chaos caused when partners in art opt to become partners in passion.

The show was nominated for the Tony Awards in four categories, including Best Musical, and for the prestigious Drama Desk with five nominations. For this production, the scores by Marvin Hamlisch, composer of ‘A Chorus

Line’, will be performed live under the musical direction of Arturo Díez Boscovich, and the creative

team will include great theatre professionals such as Alejandro Andújar for the set and costumes, Juan Gómez-Cornejo and Carlos Torrijos for the lighting, Roc Mateu for the sound and Borja Rueda for the choreography. Francesc Isern will be in charge of the video-scene. Tickets to attend the staging of Tocando nuestra canción are now available on the theatre’s website, at the box office and at all El Corte Inglés points of sale, with prices ranging from €22 to €64. https://teatrodelsoho. com Love and humour as medicine for the times we live in After its own productions of A Chorus Line,

Company and Godspell, the CaixaBank Soho Theatre is preparing its fourth production, this time with fewer actors on stage but with love as one of its main threads. “Is it possible to maintain a successful professional relationship while in love, can they keep their egos and fears in check, can they maintain a romantic relationship without having let go of the previous one? Let’s give it a shot,” the organisers explain the plot. It is, they say, “a fresh and crazy musical, full of humour about the world of relationships, which pushes us to laugh at our own insecurities and fears, our successes and failures”. And they add it is a musical journey full of rhythm and laughter, tenderness and emotion, whose vehicle is a smile from beginning to end. Love and humour as medicine for the times we live in.

PAD is holding one of its regular charity quiz nights to start the new year with, hopefully, some much needed funds. It’s at Bridges Bar in La Cala de Mijas on Monday, January 22 at 7.30pm. There will be three separate quizzes: General Knowledge, Music and Marathon. Entry is €15 per head which includes a hot buffet. Ring 620 786 772 to book and let’s raise some money for the dogs. The Kennels and Cattery PAD (Proteccion de Animales Domesticos) was founded in 1996 with the objective of sheltering and then finding new homes for abandoned dogs and cats. They have a small shelter based in Mijas Costa where they try to save as many animals as possible. This is sometimes limited due to lack of resources, food, vet, donations so they need people to help them to keep going to continue saving lives, they can’t do it alone. For information see: https://padmijas.org

Much needed funds are required to help the animals.

ST ANDREW’S Costa del Sol East, Anglican Chaplaincy is pleased to announce they have a new chaplain. The Revd William Small has been assigned to the post of Chaplain to the congregations of what is termed the Chaplaincy of St Andrew, Costa del Sol East. The Anglican Chaplaincy of Saint Andrew is centred in Fuengirola, extending west to Calahonda, east to the area of Benalmadena and inland, to the town and surrounding areas of Alhaurin el Grande. The Chaplaincy was founded in February 1968 by the Reverend Arnold Hellicar, Chaplain of St George’s Church, Malaga. The Chaplaincy was originally based in the Fuengirola suburb of Torreblanca; today, the Chaplaincy celebrates weekly in four locations - Alhaurin el Grande, Benalmadena, Calahonda and Fuengirola (Los Boliches). Revd William has been part of the team ministering to these centres as well as St George’s Malaga for the last two years, as he finished his curacy training under the tutelage of Revd Louis Darrant

of St George’s, so he is well known in the area. St Andrew’s has been without a Chaplain for more than two years, but a team of retired and lay ministers has been very active in taking care of the congregations in the interim. The Revd William Small was born in Zambia, but has lived in seven other countries and worked in many more as a Hydrogeologist. He began his curacy in a church in Shrewsbury, but due to a change in family circumstances, this was cut short and he and his wife Lissi moved to Spain to take care of an elderly relative. Here he took up his curacy training again under the

auspices of the Diocese in Europe. Father William comes with a wealth of experience and his licensing comes with great anticipation for the congregations of St Andrew’s. The Chaplaincy offers many social activities, some doubling as important fundraisers, which allow people to spend time with one another. Each day after the service in Los Boliches, people gather for a cup of coffee and a chat, whilst weekly coffee gatherings happen in Calahonda as well. There is a once-a-month lunch club after the Sunday service in Los Boliches on the fourth Sunday of the month. For more information email: st.andrew.losboliches @gmail.com.
