Moving forward together VIEWPOINT BILL ANDERSON LIFE sometimes takes us in unexpected directions, and whilst I have been writing columns for the Euro Weekly News (EWN) for some time now, being appointed Editor was never on my radar. Having said that, I am both excited and enthusiastic about working with the team to take the brand forward. I am delighted to have joined the Euro Weekly team. After four years in the political world, it is good to return to the real world and contributing to getting the news out there is a challenge. News content is a bit like restaurant menus: some like McDonald’s, and some like Michelin Star restaurants. The important thing is having enough variety that everyone can leave happy and satisfied. I will be working on this with the team. I’m sure we will not please everyone, but that’s life. For some time now, the Euro Weekly News

(EWN) has been in pole position amongst all of the independent Press in Spain in championing the excellent work done by charitable organisations and those who raise funds for good causes. This commitment will continue. As we enter 2024, many parts of Spain still face challenges. Although we have had a smattering of rain, drought is still the order of the day with many areas dealing with continued water restrictions. There have been many political debates around this matter but very little action. Without having expertise in the area of water storage and supply, I do understand that desalination is one way forward, but not an absolute solution to the problem. Construction around the coasts escalates without a clear solution to the water supply problem. Transport also presents some challenges for 2024. With Low Emission Zones (LEZ) being introduced in many of the larger municipalities, many people with older vehicles could find themselves in difficulty. The reality for those of us who live along the Spanish coast, with one or two excep-

tions, is that we live moderately rural lives with very limited public transport options or even availability. There has been a lot of ‘jawjaw’ about this, but we know that major improvements will not happen overnight. Politicians are often very good at making life harder for us, but not so efficient at anticipating future needs and acting before it becomes a problem. 2024 could be a big year internationally, as there are around 40 elections taking place. Let’s see if it is more of the same or all change for the better, or otherwise. There have been some big shifts in voting preferences in recent times, so could it be exciting times ahead? Who knows? I have been staggered by all of your good wishes at my appointment and appreciate the constructive comments about going forward. I will be looking for your continued involvement in content and look forward to working with you. We want to listen to your views and the EWN team hopes to provide you with the news and content you are looking for in ‘The People’s Paper’.

PROVERB OF THE WEEK If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. This was originally an African proverb meaning don’t wait, go along so you are not held back by others.

Population dynamics ACCORDING to the latest figures published by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), most municipalities in the region have seen population growth, except for l’Alfas del Pi. Unfortunately, l’Alfas del Pi has experienced a decrease in its population, with a reduction of 150 people as of January 1, 2023, reaching 20,518 registered residents (compared to 20,668 the previous year). Although the municipality had seen growth in the years prior, this recent decline follows a similar trend from 2021 when the population dropped from 20,482 to 20,042 registered residents. Altea has also experienced population growth, gaining 810 inhabitants and reaching a total of 23,820 registered residents. La Nucia saw a modest increase from 18,624 to 18,970 in 2023. Finestrat has surpassed the 8,000 inhabitants mark, registering 8,836 people compared to 7,909 the previous year.

Mayor’s gratitude THE swift action and effective coordination by firefighters led to the rapid containment and control of the fire in Altea that ignited on January 6. Diego Zaragozi, the mayor of Altea, expressed his gratitude to the firefighters, stating, “Thanks to the fast and tireless work of numerous fire, land, and air units, the support of the Guardia Civil, and the civic collaboration of neighbours and volunteers, we were able to control this fire that could have had irreversible and dramatic consequences for our town and many of our neighbours.” In acknowledgement of the collaborative efforts, the mayor extended his appreciation to everyone involved in the rapid extinction and containment of the potentially devastating fire. The response included 21 firefighters from the Provincial Council of Alicante, five Forestry firefighters of the Generalitat, six fire trucks, two coordinators, four aerial units, two SAMU+Support Basic Life ambulances and technicians. The mayor concluded with a plea for caution, urging people to exercise prudence when engaging in activities that involve controlled fires, discarding cigarette butts, or any actions that may pose a risk of fire, particularly during windy conditions.

nation event is scheduled for January 18 in the afternoon at the El Cirer Social Hall. It is crucial to remember

that blood cannot be manufactured, and voluntary, altruistic donations are the sole source. The province of Alicante requires approximately 250 daily donations to meet the diverse medical needs of hospitals, including surgeries, oncological treatments, and transfusions. Since blood has a limited shelf life, ongoing donations are essential to maintaining adequate reserves.

Occupancy record IN 2023, Benidorm was merely 3.8 points away from surpassing the record occupancy figures of 2019, which had stood as the benchmark year for the tourism industry in the Community. The Benidorm Hosbec Hotel Association has provided an overview of the year, emphasising its positive trajectory as the tourism sector rebounds from the impact of the pandemic. On the Costa Blanca, hotels associated with Hosbec achieved an average annual occupancy of 72.9 per cent, surpassing 2019 figures by 4.1 per cent. The province of Valencia closed the year with an 81 per cent occupancy rate, with the city of Valencia leading the way with the best annual average occupancy data at 81.3 per cent. This represents an increase of almost three percentage points compared to 2019. The provincial balance between international and national visitors is maintained, but in Valencia, the volume of international tourists rises to 64.2 per cent, with Dutch and British markets taking the lead. Benidorm, boasting an average available hotel floor of 120 accommodations and over 41,000 beds throughout the year, reached an average occupancy of 80.4 per cent in 2023.

The municipality ranks among the fastest-growing in population within the province, surpassing the 72,000 inhabitants mark for the first time since 2013. With the exception of 2020, when it remained below 70,000, the population had consistently stayed below this threshold. The INE data indicates that Benidorm now boasts 72,342 inhabitants, a notable increase of 2,604 compared to January 1, 2022, when the official figure was 69,738. The population had seen a modest increase of 620 in the year prior, from 69,118 in 2021. In 2020, the official figures rose to 70,450 residents, marking a change from the 2019 count of 68,721. The peak was in 2013, with 73,768 registered residents. However, subsequent years witnessed a decline, reaching the lowest figure in the past decade in 2016 with 66,642 residents.

various factors could contribute to the increased detection rather than solely reflecting an actual rise in earthquakes. Sergio Molina, a professor at the University of Alicante, highlighted the influence of factors such as improved instruments and additional detection stations over the years. The professor emphasised that the current increase in seismic activity doesn’t necessarily indicate an imminent seismic event.

Fire alarm A FIRE broke out in a pine forest area between Benidorm and Finestrat, causing concern in the local communities. The fire started around 9.45pm on January 7 in Sierra Cortina and impacted an area of 500 square metres, comprising bushes and pine forest. Windy conditions added complexity to the firefighting efforts. The incident occurred in the vicinity of the CV-758 highway, triggering a swift response from the Provincial Firefighters Consortium of the Marina Baixa Park in Benidorm. Firefighters were deployed with a headquarters vehicle, a heavy rural pumper, and a supply vehicle equipped with an 11,500-litre water tank. Local Police from Benidorm and Finestrat assisted by redirecting traffic to facilitate operations.

There were still plenty to choose from and we have chosen Bar Paco in Javea which was recommended by Margaret Conner who will receive a prize of €100 from EWN to allow her and her partner several more meals there. Is there ever a problem? No as Cristine will always cope with any allergy or preference with a smile, which often makes life easier for myself as I have eating problems! My partner and I had eaten at The Avenida Cafe, which was part of Mercadona until closed down and enlarged, so they returned to Bar Paco, owned and named after dad, who had run it with wife, Carmen, and family for years, but sadly, he is no longer with us. Most days regular workers and locals use this eatery, as they never know what to expect on the menu, but always a delight. I hope this will be of interest to your readers as eating out prices have risen sharply in the past year and still continue to do so. Please note that with effect from January 1, 2024 the price has been increased to €13 which is still great value for money.

THE hotel sector in Spain, particularly in destinations like Benidorm and Denia, has shown strong growth in profitability compared to 2019. According to a report from Spain’s Chamber of Commerce, the revenue per available room (RevPAR) for hotels between June and September 2023 was 25.9 per cent, exceeding the 22.2 per cent recorded in 2019. This increase is attributed to a stronger recovery in prices, driven by cost

In tourist municipalities, Benidorm and Denia demonstrated significant income growth, with increases of 25.5 per cent and 43.8 per cent, respectively. The rise in prices played a crucial role, with the average room price experiencing a notable increase of 28.3 per cent. In the urban destina-

tions segment, Alicante performed well, achieving a revenue of available room at €104.70. This placed Alicante in the eighth position among Spanish cities with the highest income levels during the summer of 2023. The top cities in terms of income were San Sebastián (€188.60), Barcelona (€154.10), Palma de Mallorca (€133.80), Malaga (€124.40), Cádiz (€113.70), Bilbao (€106.90), and Valencia (€105.70).

14 EWN 11 - 17 January 2024 IN today’s article we would like to discuss the nullity of the ban on tourist rentals agreement in a Community of Owners, and a recent successful court case. Our firm represented a buyer who purchased a property, started to rent it out as a tourist rental and faced the opposition of the Homeowners' Association.

New court success. Nullity of the ban on Tourist Rentals Agreement in a Community of Owners. Horizontal Property Law. Expert legal advice. In its ruling, the court has recognised our client’s right to carry out this activity normally. Ban on tourist rentals. Horizontal Property Law Article 17.12 of the Horizontal Property Law (LPH) allows communities

to limit or condition tourist rentals by 3/5 of the votes and quotas. However, when the Board of Owners approves a ‘prohibition’ of these characteristics, we must ask ourselves: What happens to the new owners? Do these limitations also apply to people who purchase a property after the prohibition? The registration in the Land Registry is key Certainly, the Meeting of Owners can establish limitations on the use or destination of the dwellings in a community. But these prohibitions will only be enforceable against new owners if previously registered in the Land Registry. This is established

in article 5 of the Horizontal Property Law, which states that these limitations constitute ‘a private statute that will not be prejudicial to third parties if it has not been registered in the Property Register’. Seems logical and reasonable that a limitation to the right of ownership is public and can be known in advance by any purchaser. It would not make much sense that buyers request dozens and dozens of minutes of previous meetings from vendors in order to find out whether or not there is any relevant limitation on the property they intend to purchase. The specific case. Ban on tourist rentals by the Internal Regime Our client bought a property in an Urbanisation in Javea. She obtained the tourist licence from the Generalitat Valenciana and started renting it out through

this modality. After the acquisition, the Community of Owners informed her that this type of rental was prohibited by the Internal Regulations. And required her to cease the activity or the community would initiate legal proceedings against her. After studying the case, we voluntarily went to court to confirm whether or not she had the right to carry out the tourist activity. The court ruling. Declaration of nullity of the agreement prohibiting tourist rentals The Court of Denia, as requested in our lawsuit, has confirmed in its judgement that: - The instrument used by the community for the ban on tourist rentals was not correct. The Internal Regulations (art. 6 LPH) are intended to regulate the details of cohabitation, the use of the common services, etc. But cannot establish

limitations or prohibitions to the right of ownership. For this, the appropriate channel are the Statutes (art. 5 LPH). Furthermore, the prohibition established by the Community does not apply to our client because at the time of becoming the owner, the limitation was not duly registered in the Land Registry. - Finally, the nullity of the ban on tourist rentals is declared null and void, and the Community must allow our client to carry out the tourist activity normally. Conclusion At White Baos Lawyers we are experts in Horizontal Property Law and tourist rentals. If there is a conflict in your community of owners related to tourist rentals, please do not hesitate to contact us. We will study your case and offer you expert legal advice on the subject. Catherine McGeer IN a surprising twist, Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II, revered as Europe’s longest-serving monarch, made a historic announcement during her customary New Year’s Eve address. After an impressive 52-year reign, the 83-year-old monarch declared her abdication, setting the stage for her eldest son, Crown Prince Frederik, to ascend the throne on January 14. Diverging from British royal customs, Denmark won’t hold a formal coronation ceremony but he will simply assume the mantle of King of Denmark and head of state, presiding over not only Denmark but also Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Crown Prince Frederik, recognised for his passion for environmental causes, spearheaded the celebrated ‘Royal Run’ during his 50th birthday. This running event, cherished by over 70,000 Danes, became a tradition disrupted only during the pandemic. Much like King Charles III of Britain, Prince Frederik passionately embraces environmental concerns. His deep-rooted commitment to addressing the climate crisis has significantly impacted his perspective, compelling him to advocate vocally by attending United Nations climate summits and urging global action. The imminent reign of King Frederik heralds not just a new chapter in Denmark’s monarchy but also a shift towards modernity and environmental conscientiousness in royal leadership.

THE dreaded sunbed wars could be over after tourists won compensation from travel company TUI. German tourists have been awarded compensation by a court in Hanover, Germany after complaining about the morning sunbed race at a Greek hotel. Managers at the Atlantica Mikri Poli hotel in Rhodes instigated a ‘no reservation’ policy that meant guests who put down towels on their sunbeds had to use them or lose them. However, the German holidaymakers told the court they’d been unable to find any available sun loungers on one occasion. They reported staff at the TUI hotel failed to implement the policy, which meant, they said, one morning they’d been unable to find any available sunbeds around any of the resort’s six pools. Hanover District Court ordered the hotel to pay €300 as compensation for the part of the holiday the family had been unable to enjoy. The verdict is still subject to an appeal and is not yet legally binding. However, could this be the beginning of the end for the sunbed wars between holi-

The Gambia, despite having a successful tourist industry, is among the poorest countries in the world, rates 174 out of 191 in the world wealth index. This means there is a major issue with eyesight, the treatment for which is desperately underfunded. Spectacles in The Gambia are very expensive and are simply out of reach for most people. Before leaving our home in Mijas we launched the EYEDROP appeal, as a result of which, almost 400 pairs of new and used spectacles were donated by the general public. A HISTORIC factory in the Polish city of Bielsko-Biała, which has operated since 1948 and produced the iconic Fiat 126p ‘Maluch’, will close with the loss of over 450 jobs according to ‘Notes from Poland’. During the communist era, the then state-owned plant produced cars under licence from Fiat, including the famous ‘Maluch’ (meaning ‘little one’). River water peaks

HIGH WATER: Many areas of the Netherlands have been recently flooded.

THE Rhine River reached its highest level on Sunday, January 7, as it saw its fourth high water peak since November of last year. It is extremely rare that such high-water levels of the river are observed in this relatively short period of time. However, the large amounts of rainfall have contributed to this, as well as the flooding across the nation. As a result of this, the flooding along the major rivers was expected to continue into this week, partly because the soil is

so saturated by the rain that it now can no longer absorb any more water. Various water boards in the Netherlands, alongside the authorities and Rijkswaterstaat will continue to closely monitor the situation, especially for damage that could make the now soaking wet dikes unstable. To process the volume of water, Rijkswaterstaat put the large weirs on the Lower Rhine near Driel and the Lek near Amerongen to use. The Ravenswaaij barrier was closed to shipping tra-

ffic, alongside the Princess Marijke locks in the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal near Tiel. The high water also resulted in the closing of the quays and some streets in Nijmegen, Tiel and Arnhem. Herd managers, being warned of the coming weather, have already moved their cattle onto dry land. Sandbags have been placed around doors in residential areas, including Leerdam, Utrecht, to prevent flooding from overflowing rivers.

Birth of an innovative eco-friendly Residential Development in El Verger

• Talasa: Quadratia’s Vision for Environmentally Conscious Architecture The planet’s current climate crisis, triggered by the persistent consumption of fossil fuels, the reduction of natural spaces, and the excessive energy expenditure in first-world countries, has prompted diverse solutions from various sectors to mitigate its effects. Undoubtedly, the real estate sector leads this trend. For years, developers have been implementing new ideas in energy efficiency and sustainability, not only in the construction of homes but also in the management of the communities residing in them. Sustainability certifications like BREEAM, the incorporation of new systems such as aerothermal technology, and emerging trends in multifunctional design integrated with nature are examples of the increasing awareness of both society and the industry in addressing the climate crisis. Some of these solutions have revolutionised energy efficiency, resulting in greater savings for consumers compared to traditional homes. • Talasa Village: A Sustainable Community In this context, Quadratia, a Spanish real estate developer specialising in Mediterranean properties since 2005, introduces its groundbreaking project: Talasa Caelus, the inaugural residential development within Talasa Village. A genuine commitment to sustainability and healthy coexistence situated in El Verger, just a few metres from La Almadraba Beach in Denia. The development is in a unique enclave between the Sierra de Segaria and the sea, in a newly created sector with wide avenues, a green boulevard, and close proximity to the services of El Verger and Denia urban centres. The project is conceived with innovative sustainable strategies: rainwater collection, channelling, and reuse systems that will give life to an abundant sustainable ecosystem; maintenance-free gardens of native species; extensive areas of photovoltaic panels for self-consumption energy generation; aerothermal systems for hot water; and multiple charging points for electric vehicles. Furthermore, the design of the 1, 2, and 3-bedroom homes, organised in compact volumes, aims to ensure pleasant temperatures both in winter and summer. This, along with the layout of large terraces, is

facilities that elevate their passion for two-wheeled transportation. Similarly, the ambiance created by the architects and engineers, with care and attention to detail, aims for a sense of total community. This feeling is crucial for any society to thrive sustainably. Therefore, it will not be difficult to find open squares and comfortable corners throughout the Talasa Caelus area where gathering with family or friends outdoors becomes a truly rewarding activity. These include swimming pools, sensory gardens, social clubs, yoga practice spaces, self-consumption gardens, and even areas for pet washing. To promote biodiversity and reduce the construction’s environmental impact, Talasa Caelus designers have developed the buildings considering sustainable practices and the use of specific materials. Known for a diverse range of musical styles, Deep Purple’s early output spanned from rock, as demonstrated in their cover of Joe South’s ‘Hush’, to strongly classically influenced pieces like ‘April’ from their third album. The band’s early albums featured extended solos, showcasing their musical prowess, including memorable covers like ‘Hey Joe’ and ‘I’m So Glad’.

Sea Guardian

THE exhibition ‘The Guardian of the Sea’ in Benidorm, previously showcased at the Boca del Calvari Museum until November 19, is now accessible virtually. The digitised exhibition invites visitors to explore ‘La Torre de les Caletes’ through a 360° tour, offering an engaging experience. Ana Pellicer, the councillor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, emphasised the accessibility of the virtual exhibition, highlighting that it is free of charge and available at any time. Utilising a computer, tablet, or smartphone, individuals can immerse themselves in the exhibition’s rich content from the comfort of their homes. Promoted by the city council and the Alicante Archaeological Museum, the exhibition focuses on the Torre de les Caletes,

a 16th-century defensive watchtower in Serra Gelada. The councillor underlined the significance of the exhibition in shedding light on the tower’s history, particularly after its refurbishment in 2017, which uncovered valuable insights through expert study. The exhibition delves into the lives of the guardians responsible for safeguarding the coast against Berber corsair attacks that plagued Benidorm for four centuries. The councillor emphasised the importance of reconstructing their history and understanding their daily lives, which is vividly portrayed in the exhibition. ‘The Guardian of the Sea’ now joins other digitized offerings in Virtual Benidorm, including ‘The Accidental Tourist,’ ‘Feminine Plural,’ ‘Ferran Freixa, the Present Light,’ ‘Mut Art,’

and ‘A Renaissance Esthete’ dedicated to Admiral Guillén Tato. The virtual platform enhances accessibility, particularly for individuals with reduced mobility, breaking down barriers and making cultural heritage more inclusive. The digitised exhibition incorporates dozens of 360-degree photographs, offering an immersive experience that can be enjoyed with augmented reality glasses or on mobile devices equipped with gyroscopes. Portraits, maps, and interactive texts enrich the virtual exploration, providing users with a deeper understanding of the exhibition’s content. Finally, the councillor highlighted the role of technology in breaking barriers and making cultural heritage accessible to all, especially those with mobility challenges.

Knickers replace trousers

NEW TREND: The Miu Miu Autumn/Winter 2023 catwalk.

SOME people feel that trends in fashion are just pants, but don’t knock the knickers because they are not just on trend but exciting the fashion world. The Miu Miu Autumn/ Winter 2023 collection started (or perhaps resurrected) this trend and the idea has sparked excitement with many other designers following suit. There’s an old saying ‘Little things please little minds but little pants don’t fit big behinds’ and perhaps not everyone wants to spend much of the winter parading around with a pair of skimpy pants co-

vering their lower halves. So the offshoot of Prada has inspired designer labels such as Acne, Victoria Beckham, Gucci and Tom Ford to go all out with stand-alone pant collections whilst other designers have chosen to create dresses and skirts from sheer material in order to show the pants off but also save some blushes. Others have taken the retro step of going for a selection of hot pants harking back to the 60s and the ‘Summer of Love’ as it is clear that there is only so much creativity possible and like the remakes of mo-

vies, fashion certainly has no problems with looking to the past in order to move forward. If you are thinking of rushing to the Miu Miu online store just be warned that prices start at around €850 and can rise as high as €5,000 depending upon the material used. Time will tell whether Britain’s favourite supplier of knickers, Marks and Spencer will introduce their own street wear and then you too can afford to be like Superman (not Supergirl who wore a skirt) wearing your pants over your tights.

FINANCE DAME EMMA WALMSLEY, chief executive of biopharma giant GlaxoSmithKline, said Britain was “uniquely placed” in the drug development market owing to its background of academic skill and high-profile companies. “I’m a great optimist about the UK,’ she told a BBC Radio 4 interviewer.

Planning ahead

THE time that unpaid interns spend with companies in Spain will be included in the calculations of years worked when they reach pensionable age. This new measure, which came into force on January 1, will affect 1.2 students currently acquiring work experience, the Social Security ministry said.

Cash needed

CAMBRIDGE PROPERTIES HOLDINGS LTD, created in 2021 for the Selfridges takeover by Thailand’s Central Group and Austrian company Signa, has asked the former for more cash following Signa’s collapse. Selfridges’ property arm also needs to repay a £27.3 million (€31.6 million) shareholder loan in May.

Early sales

WINTER sales in Spain normally begin on January 7 once the Christmas holiday is finally over but fashion chains H & M, Cortefiel and Bimba y Lola broke with tradition by starting theirs on December 28. Smaller businesses warned that profit margins were so narrow, they could not afford to slash prices so early.

Shopping spree

FRIDAY December 22 was the UK’s most popular shopping day over the recent festive season, with 25 million trips made and £803 million (€929 million) spent in person, 85 per cent more than on an average Friday in 2023. Online spending remained steady at 11.6 per cent, data specialists Kantar said.

At one point on January 2, M & S shares shot up 2.5 per cent to increase the company’s value by more than £70 million (€80.8 million), while finishing the day 1.3 per cent higher. BNP Paribas analysts singled out M&S stock as one of their first choices for 2024 and predicted that the company would turn out to be Christmas 2023’s “likely winner.” Its market capitalisation

has practically doubled to £5.5 billion (€6.3 billion) over the last 12 months, putting the company back into the FTSE 100 last August, four years after its 2019 relegation. In 2007 M & S was worth £12 billion (€13.8 billion) but

between 2014 and 2019 the high street stalwart lost much of its sheen as well as 60 per cent of its market value amid criticism of “tired stores” and failing to cater for its core clientele. The hoped-for revival plotted by M & S chairman

Archie Norman and chief executive Stuart Machin is paying off and its lacklustre clothing and homeware sections no longer lag behind the food departments. By last November, profits rose by more than £100 million (€115.5 million), permitting the company’s first dividend payout since the pandemic. Commentators have also pointed out that M & S is better-protected than many rival companies because a fair proportion of its most faithful clients are able to continue spending as normal, despite the costof-living crisis.

Iberdrola calls off US deal

IBERDROLA pulled out of its $8.3 billion (€7.5 billion) acquisition of New Mexico-based PNM Resources. The deal, which would have made Iberdrola subsidiary Avangrid one of the largest utility companies in the US, was cancelled on January 2. Avangrid explained that the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission vetoed the transaction in 2021 on “quality of service” grounds and a subsequent appeal was now enmired in the courts. The New Mexico regulator had also cited the Villarejo scandal which named Iberdrola chairman Ignacio

Slowdown for factories MANUFACTURING in Spain slowed for the ninth consecutive month in December, the Hamburg Commercial Bank and S&P Global’s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) revealed. December earned 46.2 points compared with November’s 46.3, with both below the 50 cutoff separating contraction from growth. Last month’s slowdown reflected a falling-off of new orders owing to reduced national and international demand, the PMI showed. Instead, the country’s manufacturers cut back on production and used existing stocks, reducing reserves of raw materials and semi-finished goods for the ninth month running.

The PNM deal was approved by five US federal agencies and Texas’s public utility commission, but Avangrid explained on January 2 that with “no clear timing” on the New Mexico appeal, it was cancelling the deal in line with the terms of the PNM agreement. Goldman Sachs analysts quoted by the Financial Times said Iberdrola’s decision was a “strategic positive” as interest rates had soared since the merger was announced. It also avoided a €9 billion hike in Iberdrola’s net debt, taking this it to approximately €55 billion.

Disappearing cash

THE UK’s farmers accused the government of reneging on its pledge to spend an annual £2.4 billion (€2.8 billion) on agriculture. The government promised that by the end of the present parliament this £2.4 billion would be compensating for the disappearance of the EU’s common agricultural policy which paid farmers for each hectare of land they managed. Instead, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) figures show that it underspent by £110 million (€127.5 million) between 2021 and 22 and £117 million (€135.6 million) between 2022 and 23. In all, £227 million (€263 million) of the pledged cash has not reached them, the farmers said.

Gold rush SALES of gold, precious metals and coins rose 7 per cent last year compared with 2022. As the number of people turning to gold overtakes the 2020 boom experienced during lockdown, the Royal Mint said this was the result of an increase in smaller investors looking for a “safe haven.” Nevertheless, the Royal Mint’s payments to customers selling back their gold soared by almost 50 per cent as gold reached a record high last year. It was also likely that gold would climb to new levels during 2024 if interest rates were to fall, Royal Mint analyst Stuart O’Reilly predicted.

Looking ahead Come clean Logical expansion

THE New Year is a time for predictions, and economist Roger Bootle foresaw that 2024 would be “unusually uncertain.” But writing in the Telegraph Bootle also predicted “significant” cuts in interest rates before long, with the US leading the way. The Fed might be able to cut interest rates as early as March, he said, followed by the eurozone and then the UK in the last few months of the year, if not before. Britain’s key problem, Bootle stated, was the stubbornness of pay inflation, which would not be assisted by next April’s sizeable increase in the National Living Wage. “Even so, by the end of the year, CPI inflation should be down to about 1.2 per cent, but with the core rate considerably higher, at about 2.5 per cent.”

UNILEVER should be more open regarding its tax situation in Russia, pro-Ukraine campaigners said. After the Ukraine invasion, Unilever stopped all imports and exports to Russia but decided to continue producing “everyday essential food” including ice cream at its factories there. Activists called on the company, which makes Persil, Hellman’s and Marmite, to disclose how much it has paid in taxes to the Kremlin in the past year. The request followed the Russian government’s announcement last December that it would eliminate the need for “certain businesses” to publish trading details although it is not yet known whether this covers Unilever.

SPANISH logistics group has bought Belgium Parcels Service (BPS), a company that specialises in the urgent distribution of pharmaceuticals in Belgium and Luxembourg. “This acquisition represents an important milestone in Logista’s expansion in Europe,” the company announced. “It also strengthens its position in pharmaceutical distribution and the courier segment.” BPS provides 24-hour courier services in Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as 24- and 48-hour services in the Netherlands, France and Germany. Logista paid approximately €8 million for BPS, as it continues its strategy of focusing on geographical and business diversification.

The future looks bleak LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I FIND it difficult to contemplate why the Western general public and indeed the politicians, can’t, or simply refuse to admit, that Hamas are exploiting the beleaguered citizens of Palestine as victims solely to gain supportive propaganda for a conflict they have been involved in for years? Israel has not, as the disinformation instigators continue to spout, ‘declared war on Palestine’s innocent citizens’. If Hamas were to discontinue their policies of hiding behind, or literally underneath the populace and repositioned themselves in more unpopulated areas, or indeed were prepared to sit around the negotiating table, the horrendous death toll that is befalling the inhabitants of the country would probably be terminated in days. But they won’t will they? The more Palestinians that are sacrificed, the more they can blame the atrocities on the Israelis, whose generals, rest assured, would be only too relieved to continue

or end the conflict without the horrific slaughter of so many civilians. The Hamas warren of tunnels and war rooms have been purposely constructed under hospitals, schools and religious establishments, primarily to avoid attack or if it should subsequently take place, be able to blame the enemy for the horror and killing of their innocent nationals. It is an obvious, cold blooded and utterly disgraceful method of misinformation. Those partaking in the demonstrations all over the West in support of these bloodthirsty undertakings should also be ashamed and condemned for patronage of a group that began this latest conflict by slaughtering the young, elderly and babies of a peaceful Israeli community. To also witness the anti-sematic attitude and actions of a vast number of mid-East immigrants is also completely unacceptable. It is important for these refugees and their kin to remember they were expected to leave their difficulties and hatred behind them, not revive them in countries who have offered them succour and the chance to live a peaceful and harmonious future with their

neighbours. When the Jewish people fled the ravages of Hitler and the holocaust, they entered Britain with jubilation and thanks. They then proceeded to blend into the British way of life. They diversified into business and the astute among them employed many of the local populace, who were always treated with respect love and not a little humour. The areas they created were not ‘no go’ communities riddled with hate and religious fervour. All manner of faiths and different beliefs were welcomed into their homes and schools of teaching. If the majority of Mid-East immigrants don’t learn to live and respect the laws of the countries that have welcomed them, it can only end in one way. The Far Right will grow in stature and subsequently the great cities of the West will soon begin to resemble the ravages of Gaza and Beirut. In the words of John Lennon. ‘Give peace a Chance’. If you don’t, the future of us all looks very bleak indeed. Keep the Faith. Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

Record visitors for Picasso Museum in 2023 THE Museo Picasso Malaga has seen a record number of visitors walk through its doors during the year 2023. 2023 saw the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, and the museum marked this event by advertising a special exposition in honour of the Malaga born artist’s passing. The record number of visitors was a massive 779,279 people that came to the museum, around 8 per cent more than in 2019, which was the best year to date in the 20 years that the attraction has been open. It is also 21 per cent more visitors than the year prior, 2022. The museum made their proud announcement on Friday December 29, and another piece of exciting news was to follow.

The wonders of sardines ALL sardines are nutritious, even the canned ones. Researchers at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona have concluded that two cans of sardines in olive oil per week can help prevent type-2 diabetes in people over the age of 65. As fresh seafood, sardines can be a savoury, protein-rich addition to Caesar salads, pasta dishes, or enjoyable on their own. While fresh sardines are seasonal, reaching peak abundance between the months of July and November, they can typically be found in stores all year round. According to a report by a news source, the fresh ones have a higher healthy fat content than their canned counterparts and are sometimes tastier, but experts urge the consumption of sardines of all varieties, including the canned ones. In the study, the Barcelona researchers introduced the two cans of sardines to a group of people over

the age of 65 with prediabetes, meaning they have high blood glucose levels and run the risk of developing diabetes in the future. Another, statistically identical group was not given the sardines, and based on the results, researchers were able to confirm that the sardine-rich diet was instrumental in preventing the former group from developing diabetes. Canned or not, sardines are an incredible source of nutrients like vitamin A, D, and B12, as well as minerals like iodine, selenium, phosphorus, and

taurine. Not to mention their richness in omega 3 fatty acids, which are key in warding off cardiovascular disease and keeping healthy cholesterol levels. One of the reasons that canned sardines are so nutritious is that they can be eaten whole, skeletons and all. Sardine skeletons are rich in the aforementioned nutrients as well as calcium. Additionally, the canning process - for which aluminium is typically used - helps preserve the fish’s nutrients in ways that other preservation methods do not.

Staying true to your new routine

EMBARKING on a new fitness routine or diet is a commendable endeavour, but the real challenge lies in maintaining consistency. Begin by setting realistic, achievable goals, and break them into smaller milestones for a sense of accomplishment. Find a workout or eating plan that aligns with your preferences to enhance enjoyment and adherence. Establish a routine, scheduling workouts or meal prep like any other essential commitment. Hold yourself accountable by tracking progress and celebrating achievements along the way. Incorporate variety to prevent monotony and keep things interesting. Surround yourself with a supportive community, whether it’s friends, family, or fitness buddies. Lastly, be kind to yourself; if setbacks occur, view them as learning opportunities rather than obstacles. By implementing these strategies, you can foster the consistency needed to turn your new fitness routine or diet into a sustainable and successful lifestyle change.

What is tartar?

TARTAR, also known as dental calculus, is a stubborn and harmful substance that can build up on your teeth over time. It is a calcified deposit that forms from the mineralisation of dental plaque. How is tartar made? - Plaque, a sticky film containing bacteria, constantly forms on teeth - Bacteria thrive on sugars and carbohydrates from food and produce acids - Over time, minerals like calcium and phosphate in saliva combine with plaque - This leads to the hardening of plaque, transforming it into tartar - Tartar is porous and yellowish in colour, making it easily visible on teeth. Who can remove tartar - Dental professionals have the expertise and tools necessary to remove tartar effectively - They use specialised instruments like scalers and ultrasonic devices - Dental Hygienists are trained to

perform preventive dental procedures, hygienists can remove tartar during routine cleanings - They can also educate patients about oral hygiene practices to prevent tartar buildup - Tartar removal by professionals helps prevent gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath - Regular dental visits are crucial to maintaining oral health and preventing tartar-related issues. Tartar is a detrimental substance that can severely impact oral health if not addressed promptly. FASHION is a strange creature and understandably with so many designers launching new collections every three months, it is incredibly difficult to come up with something new. On the odd occasion that there is a radically new trend, no matter how bizarre it may be, fashion writers praise it and other designers jump on the band wagon. The latest craze is for women to wear their pants either under sheer skirts so they can be seen or without any covering on their lower limbs. In the early 1900s, £1 was referred to as a ‘knicker’ but these ones cost a hell of a lot more and our readers passed their generally negative verdict on the trend;

Yess - Boxers n vest.

Lois G Clark

Well considering my knickers go down to my knees and my top goes up to my ears….yes! Emma Monks

Reminds me when we used to wear minis Hazel Moorman Bloomers !!

Lynda Woodin

Why should this fashion be limited to ladies? Men can wear the dresses or even see through pants so let’s see them parade round in small briefs which draw our attention to their ‘assets’. I’m sure they’d love dressing like that. Sheree Ruiz

The Geordie lasses do cause they are tough. Steve Mcgann

Heck noooo!

Is that a serious question?

Sophia Loren always said “Leave a lot to imagination “.Don’t think she would class the knickers as such. Tim McMahon

By the length of some dresses, you see the wearer has already forgotten to put on their pants and you can see their underwear, glittery or not if you are not careful. But you’d also have to ask what’s the difference between a bikini and a see-through beach over and the see-through dresses.? Sheree Ruiz

The Emperor’s New Clothes syndrome perhaps..?? !! Sandra Harbut

Don’t think it will catch on but who knows some of the hot pants were very brief back in the day. I never liked hotpants just very short minis for me but other girls looked great. And remember Kylie’s little gold ones? Leah Kerr

CONSIDERING the joy of adding a cat to your family but concerned about potential allergies? Fear not, as managing cat allergies is indeed possible with some practical tips. While cat dander is a common culprit, different breeds produce varying amounts of it. Spend quality time with various cats before making a decision to gauge your sensitivity. Even if a friend or family member already has a feline friend, there are ways to navigate potential allergic reactions. Take steps like restricting the cat’s access to certain rooms, especially your bedroom. Post-interaction, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your face or eyes. Employing air purifiers can effectively combat cat allergens as well as other airborne irritants like dust mites. Consistent cat baths, while ensuring a clean and sleek pet, also help in reducing dander.

For added relief, consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist to identify suitable antihistamines. These can address common symptoms such as a

Behind the badge - Audi

ROAD TEST By Mark Slack

WE‘RE used to seeing badges on cars, and know the desirable ones, the ones we like, the ones we don’t like, but how much do you know about the history behind the badge? They all have a history and some are more interesting than others and Audi is an especially involving story. August Horch took his first job in the industry courtesy of Karl Benz, who hired him to manage his factory in Mannheim. After three years of learning under Benz, Horch decided the time was right to strike out on his own and founded Horch & Cie Motorwagenwerke in 1899. Initially making two-cylinder and later four-cylinder cars, Horch left the company in 1909 after a difference of opinion with the company’s board and founded a new

car company in the same the year. He couldn’t use the Horch name so translated his name into Latin, ‘Audi’. Between 1912-14 Horch’s cars gained three consecutive victories at the International Austrian Alpine rally. One of the most challenging of the time. Wanderer originated as a bicycle repair shop then started building bicycles and then motorcycles. Their first car in 1913 was known as Puppchen - English Moppet. DKW was one of the lar-

gest motorcycle makers of the time. Danish founder Jorgen Skafte Rassmussen began experimenting with a steam powered automobile in 1916. It wasn’t a success so he started working on twostroke engines. DKW became one of the most important motorcycle makers of the pre first world war period and started building cars in 1928. They were the first company to bring cars with front wheel drive. Global recession meant

that demand began to plummet from 1929 and companies began to experience financial problems. The recession led to union of the four brands mentioned above, which was initiated by the State Bank of Saxony, and Auto Union AG became the second largest car maker in Germany by number of vehicles produced. The four former companies, now merged into Auto Union, maintained their own distinct areas of expertise. DKW made motorcycles and small cars, Wanderer produced mid-size cars while Audi concentrated on deluxe mid-size cars, and Horch was the luxury car arm of the enterprise. When Auto Union was formed in 1930 the four rings were seen as a badge for the first time. The name Auto Union was across the four rings and later the four rings symbolised the brand we know today as Audi.
