Open more Sundays

THE Andalucian Regional Government has approved a common 2024 calendar for shops to open in the region, which in the case of Malaga Province will be more extensive than ever, due to the Declaration of Zones of Great Tourist Affluence (ZGAT). In Andalucia, for 2024 individual shops and shopping centres are allowed to open a total of 16 Sundays and public holidays, as stipulated by the government in 2023. This is in addition to the authorisations granted to the municipalities included in the ZGAT, which allows shops to open every Sunday during summer from June until the end of September. This means that shops will be allowed to open on a total of 26 Sundays (or exactly half the year) plus they can also open on public holidays in the summer and they have additional permission to open during the whole of Easter, as was the case last year. This applies to shops and shopping centres in Marbella, Fuengirola, Estepona, Benalmadena, Torremolinos, Nerja, Rincon de la Victoria, Mijas, Manilva and Malaga City.

Affordable holidays TORREMOLINOS and Benalmadena are the most affordable locations for holiday rentals according to Holidu’s latest report, the highest prices on the Costa del Sol in 2024 will be in Estepona and Marbella. With the arrival of 2024, the holiday home market is beginning to adjust to the preferences of local and international travellers visiting the Costa del Sol. The holiday rental and flat company Holidu has conducted an analysis of 2023 and the projections for 2024. Over the course of 2023, Malaga saw a rise in the average price per night, with an increase of 9 per cent, from

an average of €128 in 2022 to €140 in 2023. Looking ahead to 2024, it is possible to rent a holiday home in the Costa del Sol capital for an average price of €136 per night (average cost for the months of January, February and March). Analysing the first three months of the year that has just begun and Torremolinos stands out, with the lowest cost of €103. It is followed by Benalmadena with €108, Fuengirola with €116 and Mijas with €125. Estepona presents a slightly higher cost of €152, and Marbella closes the list with €178, being the most expensive those studied.

Calendar Girls

IN October 2023, the International Theatre Studio staged a production of ‘Calendar Girls’, directed by Peter Brooks, at the El Paraiso Hotel. It was very well attended with a full house every evening of the production. An extra night was added due to the demand for tckets, running in total to four nights. Following on from the play’s success, ITS decided to offer a charity calendar featuring various female members of the theatre group with the proceeds going to a cancer-related charity. ITS members have been selling the calendars for the last few months at various ITS events, charity lunches and golf days and have raised an impressive €4,000! Best year 2023 has become the best year for tourism on the Costa del Sol with an improvement across all areas and one million more tourists than in 2019. This was announced by the president of the Provincial Council and Costa del Sol Tourism, Francisco Salado, at a press conference in which he presented the balance of the year. The province of Malaga received 14 million tourists last year, generating nearly €20 million of economic impact. Salado highlighted the improvement in profitability, income and employment in 2023, However, he also notes the present uncertainties, especially the ongoing drought that is affecting the sector. Salado therefore made an urgent appeal for, “far-reaching solutions to guarantee supply.” He said that, “we have to extend the cuts because summer is coming, it has not rained and I fear that we may go from having the best tourist year in the history of the Costa del Sol to having a very bad one with all that tourism represents for the economy of Malaga.”

Great graffiti

IF we take a stroll through any of the Andalucian provinces, we will witness some of the best examples of urban art in Spain. In fact, according to the Street Art Cities platform, one of them is right on our doorstep in Fuengirola. Fabián Bravo Guerrero is an urban artist from Sevilla, better known as Kato. He is a monitor at Kato Art, a company that is professionally dedicated to large-scale murals. Kato has more than 700 works all over Spain. The one that can be admired in Fuengirola is in the neighbourhood of El Bo-

The artist himself defines the work as follows: “This captivating mural transports us to a magical world where a girl, wrapped in an almost nocturnal sunset, holds a starfish that illuminates with its radiance.” The message that the mural seeks to convey can be summed up as, “even in the darkest moments, there is always a light that guides the way to our dreams.”

The supply continues to be scarce and the price continues to rise, which makes it practically unfeasible for a family with a normal salary to afford a property. For some time now, the Euro Weekly News (EWN) has been in pole position amongst all of the independent Press in Spain in championing the excellent work done by charitable organisations and those who raise funds for good causes. Surfing success Kevin Fraser Park Photo: Facebo ok / Sarah Alm agro

A YOUNG woman from Marbella lost her limbs at the age of 18 due to meningitis. In a shining example of self-improvement, this is the story of Sarah Almagro. She spent five months in hospital and two months after her admission, her hands and feet were amputated. “As soon as I arrived at the hospital, they told me that they had to amputate,” Sarah explained. At the time, she confessed that, “it was a shock. I was about to start university.” This brought about a radical change in her life. Thanks to her prosthesis, she walked again and was able to take up the sport that had been part of her childhood: surfing. Sarah explained how she got back in touch with the

sea, “a person who surfed on my beach got in touch with me and first I learned to swim again, and in the 10th lesson they told me I was ready to go to the sea.” 2023 proved to be the best year so far for her career as she was crowned European champion in adapted surfing, she is now world champion of adapted surfing in the Prone2 category and she has her sights set on the Olympic games. In addition to competing and preparing for the Olympics, Sarah gives talks on motivation and self-esteem. “Surfing, I feel I am the same as everyone else. I feel free. Surfing has helped my self-esteem. To see that I can do what I did before. It’s just different because now I do it lying down.”

Marbella Marina

THE first step has been taken towards the renovation of the Marina in Marbella. The city council and the board of owners of the port company have agreed to contract an engineering consultancy to process the project, which will involve the extension of the concession until 2051 and the modernisation of the area. The management rights expire in 2026 after 50 years, so the town hall, the concession holder, wants to extend them for a fur-

ther 25 years. The objective is to ensure that the port, created in 1977, adapts to the new demands of the Andalucian Public Ports Agency (APPA). The Marbella councillor of Beaches and Ports, Diego López, said that in order to be able to obtain the renewal of the concession it is essential to undertake, in collaboration with the Junta de Andalucia, “an ambitious project of remodelling of the facility.” Among the actions to be carried out, the councillor

highlighted the advances in terms of sustainability and the work to respond to the current needs of the nautical sector, especially in terms of the size of the boats. “We want to modernise and adapt to the new times an area that has the blue flag as a guarantee of excellence in management, which is a jewel within the city and which, despite the fact that many improvements have been made in recent years, requires a comprehensive investment,” said López.

€100 million sports Brian Bamford MARBELLA hosted more than 100 sporting events in 2023, which generated a direct economic impact for the city of around €100 million. This reported by councillor, Lisandro Vieytes, who has made an assessment of the year that has just ended, where the town hall gave more than 36,000 hours to local clubs and entities to rent courts, which meant a saving of more than €800,000, and has stressed, “the firm commitment of the government team in the improvement and creation of new facilities and support for local athletes in

various disciplines and competitions”. In addition, he said that Marbella has a budget of more than €5.8 million for 2024, which represents an increase of 76 percent over 2023. The city council is currently building nine new sports facilities, with an investment of close to €23 million, and has already planned another four that will begin in 2024. With regard to the 108 events held last year, the councillor explained that 19 were international, including the Solheim Cup, “the most watched in the history of the tournament, with nearly 90,000 visitors and an economic return for the city of nearly €30 million.”

LEZs: Sales expected to accelerate as more become operational.

THE sale of electric and hybrid cars is arousing more and more interest among the people of Malaga Province. So much so that almost half of the new registrations made in 2023 in the province, up to November (the last month for which data is available), correspond to vehicles of this type according to data prepared by the Interna-

tional Energy Agency (IEA). This would seem to be in response to the introduction of the Low Emission Zone (LEZ) in the capital, with restrictions for older vehicles registered in other areas of the province. Faconauto is the employers’ association that brings together the car dealerships in Spain and spokesman, Raúl Mo-

rales, said that, despite the good progress, there is still some way to go in terms of the transition to zero emissions. “It is insufficient. We are way behind schedule. Even more so if we take into account that after 2035 no more cars with combustion engines will be sold”. However, he expects sales to accelerate as more LEZs become operational.

THE auk (alca torda), a species of seabird native to the cold coasts of Iceland, has been spotted in the port of Malaga and many observers thought they had seen a penguin. Although it is not unusual for it to arrive on the coast to spend the winter, it is an ‘increasingly rare’ marine species. They are physically similar to penguins, heavy, expert divers and have short wings, but unlike penguins they retain the ability to fly. “It is a species related to the puffin and wintering on our coast. It is becoming rarer and rarer,” say experts talking to the local press. The ornithological information platform of the Malaga Provincial Council states on its website that this bird, halfway between seagulls and penguins, is rare in the province of Malaga. They can be seen from the coast in the port of Malaga and the coastal area from Marbella to Estepona and between Manilva and Casares. This is not the first discovery of such a species in the province of Malaga. Last summer, bathers also saw a similar

‘Malaga penguin’ ‘penguin’ on the beach of La Carihuela in Torremolinos. In that case it was a specimen of the common Arao, an endangered bird popularly known as

the ‘Galician penguin’ because it nests on the coasts of A Coruña and is very similar to the Arctic penguins, although it is not related to them.

Panoramic lift

TORREMOLINOS Town Hall has reported that work on the new lift which will connect the Parque de La Batería with Avenida Carlota Alessandri is nearing completion and should be operational in time for the summer season. Offering panoramic views of the Costa del Sol, work on the lift began earlier this year after years of complications. The project was halted in 2017 due to the loss of a grant to fund the lift and, more recently, because the current project had to be modified to meet current safety standards. The lift will facilitate access from the park to the beaches of Montemar and La Carihuela. Pedestrians have complained for many years about the difficulty of accessing the beaches from the park, which currently involves a 45 minute walk from the main entrance to the park, which is next to the Montemar train station. The lift, which has a budget of €900,000, is supported by an iron structure painted in the municipality’s corporate colours (turquoise and white), and has a 60-metre walkway that connects directly to the park. The project also includes a new parking area to alleviate parking problems on the coast during the high season. The town’s mayor, Margarita del Cid, said: “This is a very important project for Torremolinos. It is a huge qualitative leap in terms of accessibility by connecting the park to the coast.”

ANNIVERSARY APPEAL ARCH - The Andalucian Rescue Centre for Horses (and ponies and donkeys) celebrates its 15th anniversary this month. Relying solely on volunteers and fundraising is becoming even more challenging and 2024 looks set to stretch ARCH to its limits. The rising cost of hay, straw, and cereal crops, which has more than doubled over the past year, means that many people cannot afford to keep their horses and ARCH has seen a worrying rise in the number of abandoned equines and starvation cases. ARCH is now appealing for help to pay the costs of surgery on one of their many rescue horses. Caramelo first arrived at ARCH early in 2021 following a high-profile SEPRONA operation against an unscrupulous horse dealer. He was lame fo-

llowing a serious injury to his hoof. After months of veterinary treatment and recurrent slight lameness, he was rehome. Sadly, his condition worsened and it was decided it would be in his best interests to return to ARCH. He has since required surgery to hopefully cure his problem. Costs such as this need to be covered and ARCH has recently launched an appeal to help do just that. Caramelo’s story has appeared on Facebook (on Centro Andalusi de Rescate de Caballos), on Donorbox (https://donorbox.org/ ca ramelo-s-operation) and on the ARCH website (www.horserescuespain.org). Gambia

Alan Boardman is well-known for his Walking Tours in Mijas, quizzes and a range of other activities for charity. Now, he and his wife are in The Gambia laden with donations from local residents and charitable groups. So what does The Gambia have to do with Spain? My wife, Jenny and I are on holiday there and have taken with us thousands of articles donated to what we called our EYEDROP campaign. The Gambia, despite having a successful tourist industry, is among the poorest countries in the world, rating 174 out of 191 in the world wealth index. This means there is a major issue with eyesight, the treatment for which is desperately underfunded. Spectacles in The Gambia are very expensive and are simply out of reach for most people. Before leaving our home in Mijas we launched the EYEDROP appeal, as a result of which, almost 400 pairs of new and used spectacles were donated by the general public. We received sterling support from several local charities and businesses who allowed their premises to be used as donation centres. Earlier this week we visited Brikama District Hospital, one of the busiest in The Gambia. We were met there by Doctor Adam, Head of Ophthalmology, who then accepted from us around 200 pairs of the donated spectacles. She was thrilled. She stressed just how important the donation will be in her department’s constant battle to provide free eye care. She asked us to pass on her heartfelt thanks to all the people of the Costa del Sol who made this possible. We’ll send another Gambian postcard next week. THE dreaded sunbed wars could be over after tourists won compensation from travel company TUI. German tourists have been awarded compensation by a court in Hanover, Germany after complaining about the morning sunbed race at a Greek hotel. Managers at the Atlantica Mikri Poli hotel in Rhodes instigated a ‘no reservation’ policy that meant guests who put down towels on their sunbeds had to use them or lose them. However, the German holidaymakers told the court they’d been unable to find any available sun loungers on one occasion. They reported that staff at the TUI hotel failed to implement the policy, which meant, they said, that on one morning they’d been unable to find any available sunbeds around any of the resort’s six pools. Hanover District Court ordered the hotel to pay €300 as compensation for the part of the holiday the

prime spots at the fourstar Hotel Estival in Torrequebrada. A Spanish news source also reported on the daily morning sun lounger race at a Tenerife hotel to which readers reacted with incredulity on social media that holidaymakers would set their alarms for 6am to bag their favourite sunbeds. It will be interesting to see if the decision by the German court is upheld and if so whether it will stop the escalation of the sunbed wars. Watch this space!

NEW TREND: The Miu Miu Autumn/Winter 2023 catwalk.

SOME people feel that trends in fashion are just pants, but don’t knock the knickers because they are not just on trend but exciting the fashion world. The Miu Miu Autumn/ Winter 2023 collection started (or perhaps resurrected) this trend and the idea has sparked excitement with many other designers following suit. There’s an old saying ‘Little things please little minds but little pants don’t fit big behinds’ and perhaps not everyone wants to spend much of the winter parading around with a pair of skimpy pants co-

vering their lower halves. So the offshoot of Prada has inspired designer labels such as Acne, Victoria Beckham, Gucci and Tom Ford to go all out with stand-alone pant collections whilst other designers have chosen to create dresses and skirts from sheer material in order to show the pants off but also save some blushes. Others have taken the retro step of going for a selection of hot pants harking back to the 60s and the ‘Summer of Love’ as it is clear that there is only so much creativity possible and like the remakes of mo-

vies, fashion certainly has no problems with looking to the past in order to move forward. If you are thinking of rushing to the Miu Miu online store just be warned that prices start at around €850 and can rise as high as €5,000 depending upon the material used. Time will tell whether Britain’s favourite supplier of knickers, Marks and Spencer will introduce their own street wear and then you too can afford to be like Superman (not Supergirl who wore a skirt) wearing your pants over your tights.

FINANCE DAME EMMA WALMSLEY, chief executive of biopharma giant GlaxoSmithKline, said Britain was “uniquely placed” in the drug development market owing to its background of academic skill and high-profile companies. “I’m a great optimist about the UK,’ she told a BBC Radio 4 interviewer.

Planning ahead

THE time that unpaid interns spend with companies in Spain will be included in the calculations of years worked when they reach pensionable age. This new measure, which came into force on January 1, will affect 1.2 students currently acquiring work experience, the Social Security ministry said.

Cash needed

CAMBRIDGE PROPERTIES HOLDINGS LTD, created in 2021 for the Selfridges takeover by Thailand’s Central Group and Austrian company Signa, has asked the former for more cash following Signa’s collapse. Selfridges’ property arm also needs to repay a £27.3 million (€31.6 million) shareholder loan in May.

Early sales

WINTER sales in Spain normally begin on January 7 once the Christmas holiday is finally over but fashion chains H & M, Cortefiel and Bimba y Lola broke with tradition by starting theirs on December 28. Smaller businesses warned that profit margins were so narrow, they could not afford to slash prices so early.

Shopping spree

FRIDAY December 22 was the UK’s most popular shopping day over the recent festive season, with 25 million trips made and £803 million (€929 million) spent in person, 85 per cent more than on an average Friday in 2023. Online spending remained steady at 11.6 per cent, data specialists Kantar said.

M & S on top again

Linda Hall MARKS & SPENCER shares reached a five-year high when trading resumed on the London stock exchange after the Christmas break. At one point on January 2, M & S shares shot up 2.5 per cent to increase the company’s value by more than £70 million (€80.8 million), while finishing the day 1.3 per cent higher. BNP Paribas analysts singled out M&S stock as one of their first choices for 2024 and predicted that the company would turn out to be Christmas 2023’s “likely winner.” Its market capitalisation

M&S: Buoyant New Year start for high street stalwart.

has practically doubled to £5.5 billion (€6.3 billion) over the last 12 months, putting the company back into the FTSE 100 last August, four years after its 2019 relegation. In 2007 M & S was worth £12 billion (€13.8 billion) but

between 2014 and 2019 the high street stalwart lost much of its sheen as well as 60 per cent of its market value amid criticism of “tired stores” and failing to cater for its core clientele. The hoped-for revival plotted by M & S chairman

Archie Norman and chief executive Stuart Machin is paying off and its lacklustre clothing and homeware sections no longer lag behind the food departments. By last November, profits rose by more than £100 million (€115.5 million), permitting the company’s first dividend payout since the pandemic. Commentators have also pointed out that M & S is better-protected than many rival companies because a fair proportion of its most faithful clients are able to continue spending as normal, despite the costof-living crisis.

Iberdrola calls off US deal

IBERDROLA pulled out of its $8.3 billion (€7.5 billion) acquisition of New Mexico-based PNM Resources. The deal, which would have made Iberdrola subsidiary Avangrid one of the largest utility companies in the US, was cancelled on January 2. Avangrid explained that the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission vetoed the transaction in 2021 on “quality of service” grounds and a subsequent appeal was now enmired in the courts. The New Mexico regulator had also cited the Villarejo scandal which named Iberdrola chairman Ignacio

Slowdown for factories MANUFACTURING in Spain slowed for the ninth consecutive month in December, the Hamburg Commercial Bank and S&P Global’s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) revealed. December earned 46.2 points compared with November’s 46.3, with both below the 50 cutoff separating contraction from growth. Last month’s slowdown reflected a falling-off of new orders owing to reduced national and international demand, the PMI showed. Instead, the country’s manufacturers cut back on production and used existing stocks, reducing reserves of raw materials and semi-finished goods for the ninth month running.

The PNM deal was approved by five US federal agencies and Texas’s public utility commission, but Avangrid explained on January 2 that with “no clear timing” on the New Mexico appeal, it was cancelling the deal in line with the terms of the PNM agreement. Goldman Sachs analysts quoted by the Financial Times said Iberdrola’s decision was a “strategic positive” as interest rates had soared since the merger was announced. It also avoided a €9 billion hike in Iberdrola’s net debt, taking this it to approximately €55 billion.

Disappearing cash

THE UK’s farmers accused the government of reneging on its pledge to spend an annual £2.4 billion (€2.8 billion) on agriculture. The government promised that by the end of the present parliament this £2.4 billion would be compensating for the disappearance of the EU’s common agricultural policy which paid farmers for each hectare of land they managed. Instead, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) figures show that it underspent by £110 million (€127.5 million) between 2021 and 22 and £117 million (€135.6 million) between 2022 and 23. In all, £227 million (€263 million) of the pledged cash has not reached them, the farmers said.

Gold rush SALES of gold, precious metals and coins rose 7 per cent last year compared with 2022. As the number of people turning to gold overtakes the 2020 boom experienced during lockdown, the Royal Mint said this was the result of an increase in smaller investors looking for a “safe haven.” Nevertheless, the Royal Mint’s payments to customers selling back their gold soared by almost 50 per cent as gold reached a record high last year. It was also likely that gold would climb to new levels during 2024 if interest rates were to fall, Royal Mint analyst Stuart O’Reilly predicted.

Looking ahead Come clean Logical expansion

THE New Year is a time for predictions, and economist Roger Bootle foresaw that 2024 would be “unusually uncertain.” But writing in the Telegraph Bootle also predicted “significant” cuts in interest rates before long, with the US leading the way. The Fed might be able to cut interest rates as early as March, he said, followed by the eurozone and then the UK in the last few months of the year, if not before. Britain’s key problem, Bootle stated, was the stubbornness of pay inflation, which would not be assisted by next April’s sizeable increase in the National Living Wage. “Even so, by the end of the year, CPI inflation should be down to about 1.2 per cent, but with the core rate considerably higher, at about 2.5 per cent.”

UNILEVER should be more open regarding its tax situation in Russia, pro-Ukraine campaigners said. After the Ukraine invasion, Unilever stopped all imports and exports to Russia but decided to continue producing “everyday essential food” including ice cream at its factories there. Activists called on the company, which makes Persil, Hellman’s and Marmite, to disclose how much it has paid in taxes to the Kremlin in the past year. The request followed the Russian government’s announcement last December that it would eliminate the need for “certain businesses” to publish trading details although it is not yet known whether this covers Unilever.

SPANISH logistics group has bought Belgium Parcels Service (BPS), a company that specialises in the urgent distribution of pharmaceuticals in Belgium and Luxembourg. “This acquisition represents an important milestone in Logista’s expansion in Europe,” the company announced. “It also strengthens its position in pharmaceutical distribution and the courier segment.” BPS provides 24-hour courier services in Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as 24- and 48-hour services in the Netherlands, France and Germany. Logista paid approximately €8 million for BPS, as it continues its strategy of focusing on geographical and business diversification.

SPAIN’S Ibex 35, equivalent to the UK’s FTSE 100, had a record year and a return to pre-pandemic levels. Its 23 per cent improvement was principally due to the textile giant Inditex as well as the Santander and BBVA banks, although analysts described Inditex as the Spanish stock exchange’s “principal mainstay.” The company founded and still con-

trolled by Amancio Ortega closed the year with a 59.9 per cent upsurge in its share price, surpassed only by pharmaceutical company Rovi’s 65.5 per cent increase. On November 21, Inditex shares beat their own record, overtaking the €36.7 of June 2017 but continued their climb to end 2023 with a price just a little shy of €40.

Promotions were central to retailers’ strategy over the holiday season, McKevitt added. “Nearly one third of all spending in the month up to Christmas Eve was on items with some kind of offer, the highest level since December 2020, and £823 million (€951.9 million) more than 2022.” A record £13.7 billion (€15.8 billion) passed through supermarket tills last month with an average household outlay of the highest-ever £477 (€551.8). Biggest share of the Christmas supermarket shop went to Aldi and Lidl, with Lidl’s sales up 13.8 per cent up on the 12 weeks ending on December 24. Aldi’s sales grew by 9.9 per cent, giving them a combined market share of 17 per cent.

LEAPY LEE SAYS IT OTHERS THINK IT I FIND it difficult to contemplate why the Western general public and indeed the politicians, can’t, or simply refuse to admit, that Hamas are exploiting the beleaguered citizens of Palestine as victims solely to gain supportive propaganda for a conflict they have been involved in for years? Israel has not, as the disinformation instigators continue to spout, ‘declared war on Palestine’s innocent citizens’. If Hamas were to discontinue their policies of hiding behind, or literally underneath the populace and repositioned themselves in more unpopulated areas, or indeed were prepared to sit around the negotiating table, the horrendous death toll that is befalling the inhabitants of the country would probably be terminated in days. But they won’t will they? The more Palestinians that are sacrificed, the more they can blame the atrocities on the Israelis, whose generals, rest assured, would be only too relieved to continue

or end the conflict without the horrific slaughter of so many civilians. The Hamas warren of tunnels and war rooms have been purposely constructed under hospitals, schools and religious establishments, primarily to avoid attack or if it should subsequently take place, be able to blame the enemy for the horror and killing of their innocent nationals. It is an obvious, cold blooded and utterly disgraceful method of misinformation. Those partaking in the demonstrations all over the West in support of these bloodthirsty undertakings should also be ashamed and condemned for patronage of a group that began this latest conflict by slaughtering the young, elderly and babies of a peaceful Israeli community. To also witness the anti-sematic attitude and actions of a vast number of mid-East immigrants is also completely unacceptable. It is important for these refugees and their kin to remember they were expected to leave their difficulties and hatred behind them, not revive them in countries who have offered them succour and the chance to live a peaceful and harmonious future with their

neighbours. When the Jewish people fled the ravages of Hitler and the holocaust, they entered Britain with jubilation and thanks. They then proceeded to blend into the British way of life. They diversified into business and the astute among them employed many of the local populace, who were always treated with respect love and not a little humour. The areas they created were not ‘no go’ communities riddled with hate and religious fervour. All manner of faiths and different beliefs were welcomed into their homes and schools of teaching. If the majority of Mid-East immigrants don’t learn to live and respect the laws of the countries that have welcomed them, it can only end in one way. The Far Right will grow in stature and subsequently the great cities of the West will soon begin to resemble the ravages of Gaza and Beirut. In the words of John Lennon. ‘Give peace a Chance’. If you don’t, the future of us all looks very bleak indeed. Keep the Faith. Love Leapy leapylee2002@gmail.com

THE Museo Picasso Malaga has seen a record number of visitors walk through its doors during the year 2023. 2023 saw the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, and the museum marked this event by advertising a special exposition in honour of the Malaga born artist’s passing. The record number of visitors was a massive 779,279 people that came to the museum, around 8 per cent more than in 2019, which was the best year to date in the 20 years that the attraction has been open. It is also 21 per cent more visitors than the year prior, 2022. The museum made their proud announcement on Friday December 29, and another piece of exciting news was to follow.

They were there at the start of the UK Punk rock movement, along with the likes of The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Damned, Buzzcocks, UK Subs, Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers, Subway Sect and many more. During the ‘76-’77 period They performed extensively at venues across London and the UK such as The Roxy, The Vortex, The Bridge House, Music Machine, The Marquee, etc and performed live twice on Radio 1’s John Peel show. Their singles ‘Teenage Treats’ (a favourite of Peel’s) and ‘Can’t Wait ‘Til ‘78’, are considered Punk classics from that period. Their first single with RCA, ‘Rubber Cars’, was RCA’s fastest selling single the week it was released and would have been a massive hit had RCA not reluctantly pulled the record for legal reasons. The band with the line up at that time split in 1979 during its release due to unresolvable managerial disputes. Jumping forward to 2023, The Wasps are back featuring original frontman Jesse Lynn-Dean who has reinvented the band with creative and talented musicians with a pedigree in Punk and afficionados of the UK Punk ‘76-’79 era. They are all currently based on the Costa del Sol and in 2022 released their brand new album, ‘Punk Prayer’ which is available now on Vinyl and CD. The Wasps’ style of music is as fresh and exciting as ever, with high energy, punchy, catchy and melodic power pop / punk songs!

by David Hart THE magic of Christmas isn’t quite over yet for children of all ages. After its run on the Gran Vía in Madrid, ‘The Wonderful Lamp’, by the Onbeat Company, is coming to San Roque. Through the Delegation of Culture headed by Ana Ruiz, on Saturday, January 13, you can enjoy it at the Teatro Juan Luis Galiardo, at 5.30pm. Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp is one of the most famous folk tales in existence and takes us to the mystery of the exotic Orient. It has been the subject of books, films, famous songs and even one of the most successful musicals on Broadway and London. Now the Onbeat Company tells it like no one before with ‘La Lampara Maravillosa’ (The Wonderful Lamp). The San Roque councillor for Culture, Ana Ruiz, presented the event, saying that it will be a wonderful opportunity for children to enjoy this popu-

Ágrabah is the land where everything is possible, including the love of a princess with a humble villager, breaking established norms and overcoming social barriers. That is the background of The Marvellous Lamp, although the main character is undoubtedly the Genie who

emerges from the Lamp to help Aladdin achieve his goal of following true love. The Onbeat Company tells the story in the form of a tribute, as it has never been done before, through the Genie and with Broadway musical themes. The well-known songs are joined by other melodies that will transport you to the magic of a story with an excellent staging and incredible live voices.

GENERALLY speaking, one of the best bargains in terms of value for money in Spain is the understandably very popular Menu del Dia offered at lunchtime by literally of thousands of restaurants around the country. It’s a great concept whereby you can enjoy either a set lunch or a choice of starter, main course and dessert invariably with a drink or a cup of coffee for a relatively low price. We all know that the Spanish enjoy taking their time over a meal and unlike many of those living in the North of Europe aren’t satisfied with a quick sandwich at their desks. Manual workers make the most of their lunch breaks and it’s not unusual to see ambulance crews and other ‘emergency’ workers taking advantage of a break in their busy routine. Franco is credited with the concept of creating the famed Menu del Dia as a way of showcasing Spanish regional cooking and in 1965, he passed a law requiring certain restaurants, especially those in the newly emerging tourist areas, to offer a reasonably priced lunch. The concept was taken up across Spain and by the 1970s most towns

had at least one or two restaurants offering this three-course meal at an economic price. Now, more than ever, with many finding it hard to have a great deal of spare cash, the availability of the Menu del Dia is really important and even some restaurants that are normally quite ‘expensive’ have seen the advantage, especially off season, of making a more affordable

menu available. In November of this year, we at Euro Weekly News invited readers to nominate their favourite restaurant or bar offering a tasty, great value for money Menu del Dia and just to encourage participation, offered €100 to the person whose favourite was chosen so that they could enjoy a few more meals on us. There were plenty of recommendations although sadly, some people, especially those entering on Facebook forgot to leave any contact details, so they were unfortunately not in the running. There were all sorts of restaurant types, mainly Spanish but with some strong Chinese and Indian contenders and in the end, the heartfelt plea from ‘senior’ reader Margaret Conner was chosen and her winning entry can be viewed on the EWN website under the heading ‘Menu del Dia Winning Restaurant’. She recommended Bar Paco in Javea who offer a three-course option with bread and a drink for €13, so if you are in the area visit their Facebook page and drop in for lunch.

ON January 25, the birthday of Scottish poet Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns, societies, clubs and groups of friends hold Burns Suppers across the world, to celebrate the life and times of Scotland’s national poet. “Over 1,000 Burns clubs and societies exist around the world,” said John McCheyne, brand ambassador for the Scotch Malt Whisky Society. “No other poet is celebrated in this way.” The first Burns Night supper was held in 1801 when nine of Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns’ close friends gathered to mark the fifth anniversary of their friend’s death in 1796. The night was deemed such a success, it was decided the occasion would be held again, this time in honour of Rabbie’s birthday, and so the tradition we enjoy to this day was born.

The organiser of this commemorative dinner, Reverend Hamilton Paul, kept notes of the occasion, proof that today’s celebration which includes recitations and rituals has barely changed in 200 years. Including the menu! The centrepiece of any Burns Supper is always the haggis: a savoury pudding containing sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, which is minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, stock and a selection of spices and then cooked in the animal’s stomach lining, served with a side of mashed turnip (neeps) and potatoes (tatties), accompanied by the finest Scotch Whisky. The haggis is piped in on a silver platter and one chosen speaker, usually somebody Scottish or simply brave enough, will perform the Address to a Haggis followed by the piercing of the haggis with

a ceremonial knife. The tradition of honouring Burns didn’t stay in Scotland for long. As Scots travelled the world as part of the British Empire, they brought their idiosyncrasies with them. Gradually the event became a celebration of the trappings of Scottish culture, namely a role in the ceremony for the bagpipes, kilted dress and of course, plenty of whisky. Every year, Scottish expats ‘exiled’ on the Costa del Sol will be eagerly anticipating a traditional Burns Night supper much like the original over 200 years ago. Many bars and restaurants, especially those with a Scottish connection, will be holding Burns Night celebrations including. The Rose and Thistle in Duquesa has a three-course meal from 5.30pm to 9pm for €55.95 which inclu-

FROM February 1 to 4 the Rockin’Race Jamboree will celebrate its 30th anniversary in Torremolinos becoming the biggest and best festival in Spain and the only one in Andalucia, dedicated to rock and roll from the 50s and 60s. This first major music festival of the year in Spain has been attended by 211,500 people in its first 29 editions and, for 2024, attendance has already been confirmed for people from many European countries, as well as from Japan, Mexico, Australia and Canada. After 29 editions held in Torremolinos, this event

has become one of the oldest and most important international events on the Costa del Sol. Over the years, the festival has added more activities to the attractions of the Costa del Sol in February, such as an exhibition and demonstration of classic cars, with more than 50 arriving from different parts of Europe. In 2024, for example, it will be possible to see a unique car made from the fuselage of an aeroplane from Sweden. Live bands in the street during the day and food trucks are other attractions that transform Torremolinos into the world capital of the Rock&Roll of the 50s and 60s. A brilliantly successful study in atmosphere, illusion and controlled horror will be performed nightly at 7.30pm (Sunday at 7pm). A Ghost Play, directed by Lynn Halliday with Dylan Perez Gale and Owain Griffiths. Adapted by Stephen Mallatratt from the Book by Susan Hill which deals with the story of Arthur Kipps, a lawyer, who has hired the Actor to help him tell the story about an experience from his youth. The storytelling begins as Kipps is sent to handle the estate of the deceased Mrs. Drablow. He makes the trip to her funeral in a bleak and lonely part of England, the small village of Crythin Gifford where all of his enquiries into the details of the Drablow estate and the fami-

ly are met with silence. At the funeral, Kipps alone observes a strange young, ghastly-looking woman dressed in black. Mr Jerome, the colleague accompanying Kipps to the funeral, did not see the woman in black and reacts powerfully when Kipps mentions her. The next morning, Mr. Keckwick takes Kipps to Mrs. Drablow’s eerie Eel Marsh house. The house is reached by way of a narrow causeway that is passable only during low tide. As Kipps investigates the house and the su-

rrounding property, he again sees the woman in black, but is unable to follow her. His apprehension and fear grow. As he cautiously explores the inside of the house, he uncovers a large number of documents and information he must sift through in order to settle Mrs. Drablow’s affairs. His efforts reveal secrets and unexplainable events. As Kipps and the Actor struggle to tell the story and exorcise both their demons, we learn the chilling answer to these questions and more at Salon Varietes in Fuengirola.

Perimenopause and your hair

AS women navigate the perimenopausal phase, characterised by hormonal fluctuations leading up to menopause, they may notice changes in their hair. Hormonal shifts, particularly a decline in estrogen levels, can influence the hair’s texture and volume. Some women experience thinning, while others may notice increased dryness or frizziness. The decrease in estrogen impacts hair growth cycles, potentially leading to a reduction in hair thickness. Additionally, declining estrogen can contribute to a decrease in oil production, leaving hair drier and more prone to breakage. While these changes are common, maintaining a healthy lifestyle,

4am Wake-up call WAKING up consistently at 4am can be disruptive to sleep patterns and overall well-being. Several factors may contribute, such as stress, anxiety, or an irregular sleep schedule. To break this habit, establish a consistent bedtime routine, ensuring you go to bed at a reasonable hour. Crea-

te a calming environment in your bedroom and limit exposure to screens before bedtime. Evaluate and manage stressors in your life, incorporating relaxation techniques like deep breathing or meditation. Avoid stimulants like caffeine or heavy meals close to bedtime. If

the issue persists, consult with a healthcare professional to rule out underlying sleep disorders. By prioritising a healthy sleep routine and addressing potential triggers, you can regain control over your sleep patterns and wake up feeling more rested and refreshed.

HEALTH & BEAUTY II euroweeklynews.com ORAL HYGIENE: Look after your teeth.

No brushing MAINTAINING good oral hygiene is essential, but there are specific instances when brushing your teeth may do more harm than good. Here are three scenarios to approach with caution: 1. After Breakfast: While it might seem counterintuitive, brushing immediately after consuming acidic breakfast items like citrus fruits or juices can erode softened enamel. Experts

recommend waiting at least 30 minutes to allow saliva to neutralise acids before brushing. 2. After Vomiting: Stomach acid is highly corrosive, and brushing immediately after vomiting can exacerbate enamel erosion. Instead, rinse your mouth with water or a fluoride mouthwash and wait before brushing to protect your teeth from further damage.

3. After Eating Sweets: Contrary to instinct, brushing immediately after indulging in sugary treats can be harmful. The enamel temporarily softens due to sugar exposure, and immediate brushing may contribute to enamel wear. Instead, rinse your mouth and wait before brushing to strike a balance between maintaining oral health and preventing unnecessary enamel erosion.

The precision demanded by the game sharpens concentration and decision-making skills, as players strategically plan their throws. Hold yourself accountable by tracking progress and celebrating achievements along the way. Incorporate variety to prevent monotony and keep things interesting. Surround yourself with a supportive community, whether it’s friends, family, or fitness buddies. Lastly, be kind to yourself; if setbacks occur, view them as learning opportunities rather than obstacles. By implementing these strategies, you can foster the consistency needed to turn your new fitness routine or diet into a sustainable and successful lifestyle change.

Find a diet plan that suits you.

Essence of Scandinavia SCANDINAVIAN beauty is an embodiment of simplicity, purity, and a deep connection to the pristine landscapes that define the region. Drawing inspiration from the breathtaking natural surroundings, Scandinavian beauty emphasises a clean and minimalist aesthetic.

Reflecting the purity of Nordic landscapes, skincare and beauty products often feature natural, locally sourced ingredients. From nutrient-rich berries to calming botanicals, these elements harness the power of nature to nourish and enhance the skin. The minimalistic approach extends to make-up, where the emphasis is on enhancing one’s natural features rather than masking them. Compact exercises, big impact IN the world of fitness, the effectiveness of exercise is often associated with intensity and duration. However, emerging trends like slow running and micro workouts are challenging this notion, proving that smaller efforts can yield significant results. Slow running, characterised by a deliberately reduced pace, emphasises endurance, strength, and injury prevention. It allows for a gentler yet sustained engagement of muscles, making it a valuable addition to diverse fitness routines. Micro workouts, compri-

sing short bursts of exercise throughout the day, offer a practical solution for busy schedules. These bite-sized sessions not only enhance metabolism but also contribute to overall daily activity levels. Both slow running and micro workouts align with the principle that consistency and accessibility are key to a

sustainable fitness routine. By incorporating these approaches, individuals can enjoy the benefits of exercise without the need for prolonged, high-intensity sessions, making fitness achievable for everyone. Fitness can be achievable for everyone.

IN 2018, the International Federation of Pharmacists (FIP) endorsed the Astana Declaration by WHO, aiming for universal health coverage by 2030. This includes integrating pharmacists into vaccination campaigns, allowing them to administer vaccines in community pharmacies. This service is being adopted in many European countries. However, it is not yet available in Spain. Pharmacists are pivotal in primary care globally, offering accessible healthcare. The Official College of Pharmacists of Madrid (COFM) acknowledges

their contribution to the health system. These professionals provide comprehensive advice on vaccines, including dosing, side effects, and interactions. They also promote disease prevention, manage chronic conditions, encourage healthy living, and refer patients when necessary. Pharmacy vaccination services are a reality in several European countries, as per FIP data. In Portugal, the flu vaccine was first administered in pharmacies in 2008. Now, 17 vaccines are available in 77 per cent of Portuguese pharmacies.

France introduced pharmacy vaccinations during the 2017-2018 flu season. By 2020, approximately 3.3 million vaccines were administered in French pharmacies, including for Covid-19. In Italy, a 2022 decree law officially included pharmacists in flu and Covid-19 vaccination efforts. These services are now offered in 13 European Union countries. The FIP stresses the need for regulatory frameworks to support pharmacist-led vaccinations. In contrast, Spain faces legal hurdles in implemen-

Tips for your winter skin AS winter blankets us in its embrace, maintaining radiant and healthy skin becomes a top priority. Here are seven essential tips to keep your skin glowing throughout the colder season. 1. Hydration is Key: Combat the drying effects of winter by hydrating from within. Drink ample water and incorporate hydrating foods into your diet, such as fruits and vegetables. 2. Moisturise Regularly: Invest in a rich, emollient moisturiser to lock in moisture. Apply it immediately after showering to seal in hydration. 3. Gentle Cleansing: Opt for a mild, fragrance-free cleanser to avoid stripping your skin of its natural oils. Limit hot water exposure to prevent further dryness. 4. Sunscreen is a Must: Sunscreen isn’t just for summer. Protect your skin from harsh winter sunrays by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen, especially on exposed areas.

LIP BALM Will keep your lips soft.

5. Humidify Your Space: Combat indoor heating by using a humidifier. This helps skin hydration levels in heated environments. 6. Exfoliate Mindfully: Gentle exfoliation eliminates dead skin cells, promoting a fresh complexion. 7. Lip Care: Apply a nourishing lip balm regularly to prevent chapping.

FASHION is a strange creature and understandably with so many designers launching new collections every three months, it is incredibly difficult to come up with something new. On the odd occasion that there is a radically new trend, no matter how bizarre it may be, fashion writers praise it and other designers jump on the band wagon. The latest craze is for women to wear their pants either under sheer skirts so they can be seen or without any covering on their lower limbs. In the early 1900s, £1 was referred to as a ‘knicker’ but these ones cost a hell of a lot more and our readers passed their generally negative verdict on the trend;

Yess - Boxers n vest.

Lois G Clark

Well considering my knickers go down to my knees and my top goes up to my ears….yes! Emma Monks

Reminds me when we used to wear minis Hazel Moorman Bloomers !!

Lynda Woodin

Why should this fashion be limited to ladies? Men can wear the dresses or even see through pants so let’s see them parade round in small briefs which draw our attention to their ‘assets’. I’m sure they’d love dressing like that. Sheree Ruiz

The Geordie lasses do cause they are tough. Steve Mcgann

Heck noooo!

Not on your life!!!

Carol Hurst

Too draughty

Shirley Morris

No change there then. No class whatsoever! Tricia Harrington

What in my baggy grey full size M&S knickers? I think not!! Eivissa Lyn

I would not subject the public to that!

Heath Savage

To cold ..lol

Julie Hitchin

Is that a serious question?

Julia Margaret Clarke

Sophia Loren always said “Leave a lot to imagination “.Don’t think she would class the knickers as such. Tim McMahon

Mapuchi Moda

By the length of some dresses, you see the wearer has already forgotten to put on their pants and you can see their underwear, glittery or not if you are not careful. But you’d also have to ask what’s the difference between a bikini and a see-through beach over and the see-through dresses.? Sheree Ruiz

The Emperor’s New Clothes syndrome perhaps..?? !! Sandra Harbut

Don’t think it will catch on but who knows some of the hot pants were very brief back in the day. I never liked hotpants just very short minis for me but other girls looked great. And remember Kylie’s little gold ones? Leah Kerr

Sheree Ruiz Maybe the weather?

Susan Spelman

I’d scare the horses and frighten the children!! Susan Lea

Thought many females already did this

Helen Burn

Leah Kerr Hotpants were proper dress not knickers. Trousers suits were stylish too. Tim McMahon

Ridiculous

Strict new laws

AS of December 31, strict regulations demand that XL Bully dogs be kept on a leash and muzzled when in public in the UK. This measure is a response to an alarming increase in dangerous incidents involving these dogs, including 23 fatal attacks in the last three years, with XL Bullies often involved. The government has enacted a comprehensive ban on the breeding, selling, advertising, gifting, exchanging, abandoning, or letting XL Bully dogs stray. Environment Secretary Steve Barclay said, “The Prime Minister pledged to take quick and decisive action to protect the public from devastating dog attacks with measures in place by the end of 2023. “We have met that pledge - it is now a legal requirement for XL Bully

dogs to be muzzled and on a lead in public. It is also now illegal to breed, sell, advertise, gift, exchange, abandon or let XL Bully dogs stray.’” Owners must now register their existing XL Bullies before February 1, with the failure to do so resulting in criminal charges and an unlimited fine. Registration involves securing public liability insurance, microchipping the dog, and an application fee. By June 30, 2024, most dogs must be neutered, with an extended deadline to the end of 2024 for dogs under a year old as of 31 January 2024. The government’s approach is staggered, aiming to manage the existing population of XL Bully dogs. The upcoming deadline of February 1 marks the next stage in this process.

Cat allergies

CONSIDERING the joy of adding a cat to your family but concerned about potential allergies? Fear not, as managing cat allergies is indeed possible with some practical tips. While cat dander is a common culprit, different breeds produce varying amounts of it. Spend quality time with various cats before making a decision to gauge your sensitivity. Even if a friend or family member already has a feline friend, there are ways to navigate potential allergic reactions. Take steps like restricting the cat’s access to certain rooms, especially your bedroom. Post-interaction, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching your face or eyes. Employing air purifiers can effectively combat cat allergens as well as other airborne irritants like dust mites. Consistent cat baths, while ensuring a clean and sleek pet, also help in reducing dander. Your pharmacist can identify suitable antihistamines.

FALSE IDENTITIES: Driving licence fraudster arrested.

was completed successfully clients then paid the total cost for the service which ranged between €1,500 and €2,000. The impersonators who competently possessed knowledge of driving regulations, successfully passed theoretical exams, sometimes in as little as six minutes. Remarkably, some took two or three exams within a single week. The operation spanned several Spanish provinces, with impersonators travelling to sit exams. Searches were conducted in three residences, two in Madrid and one in El Ferrol, A Co-

ruña. In Madrid, a driving school and two hospitality venues were raided, where document forgery occurred. Seized items included computers and mobile phones used in the identity fraud. The operation remains active, as authorities analyse seized materials to identify more fraudulent licence holders. This extensive operation involved the GIAT of the Guardia Civil’s Traffic Group and the Police Stations of the Puente de Vallecas district and the Judicial Traffic Police of the Madrid Municipal Police.

DGT radars report IS it possible for traffic radars to impose fines for vehicles without insurance? This pivotal question is at the heart of the latest developments in road safety enforcement in Spain. It was recently reported that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has introduced a significant upgrade to its radar system, extending its capabilities far beyond mere speed monitoring. The DGT’s primary goal has always been to regulate speed and reduce traffic accidents across Spain’s extensive road network. However, the evolution of radar technology has led to a broader scope for detecting various driving offences, including the verification of compulsory insurance and the Technical Vehicle Inspection (ITV) status. It’s crucial to note that only fixed radars possess the capability to execute these additional checks. They are equipped with real-time licence plate recognition systems, enabling the DGT, led by Pere Navarro, to ensure compliance with ITV, car insurance, and even to aid in car theft prevention. The need for such measures is underscored by the DGT’s findings. The organisation’s data indicates a worrying trend. statistics show that a significant number of

SPANISH authorities have dismantled a group that falsified their identities and fraudulently obtained driving licences. In a significant crackdown named Operation CARSHINOVEL, 18 individuals have been detained across various provinces in Spain, including Madrid, A Coruña, Sevilla, Pontevedra, and Murcia. The criminal activities of the group involved impersonating candidates who lacked the necessary knowledge to pass the class ‘B’ driving test and the Certificate of Professional Competence (CAP). In some cases, they also helped individuals regain lost driving points. The fraudsters altered identity documents, replacing photos to match their impersonators, who then sat the exams. Potential clients were lured through social networks or personal contacts, initially paying between €400 to €500. Once the exam

vehicles are operating without the mandatory insurance. This not only poses a risk to the drivers themselves but also to other road users, escalating the potential for accidents and legal complications. Recent studies by the DGT reveal a startling fact that more than 10 per cent of vehicles in Spain either lack insurance or have not passed their ITV. This equates to nearly two million cars, a figure the DGT aims to reduce drastically. Driving without insurance can lead to vehicle impoundment and fines ranging from €601 to €3,005. Meanwhile, failure to undergo the ITV can result in a €200 penalty, which increases to €500 if the vehicle continues to be driven after failing as inspection test.

ROAD TEST By Mark Slack WE‘RE used to seeing badges on cars, and know the desirable ones, the ones we like, the ones we don’t like, but how much do you know about the history behind the badge? They all have a history and some are more interesting than others and Audi is an especially involving story. August Horch took his first job in the industry courtesy of Karl Benz, who hired him to manage his factory in Mannheim. After three years of learning under Benz, Horch decided the time was right to strike out on his own and founded Horch & Cie Motorwagenwerke in 1899. Initially making two-cylinder and later four-cylinder cars, Horch left the company in 1909 after a difference of opinion with the company’s board and founded a new car company in the same the year. He couldn’t use the Horch name so translated his name into Latin,

‘Audi’. Between 1912-14 Horch’s cars gained three consecutive victories at the International Austrian Alpine rally. One of the most challenging of the time. Wanderer originated as a bicycle repair shop then

started building bicycles and then motorcycles. Their first car in 1913 was known as Puppchen - English Moppet. DKW was one of the largest motorcycle makers of the time. Danish founder

Jorgen Skafte Rassmussen began experimenting with a steam powered automobile in 1916. It wasn’t a success so he started working on twostroke engines. DKW became one of the most im-

portant motorcycle makers of the pre first world war period and started building cars in 1928. They were the first company to bring cars with front wheel drive. Global recession meant

that demand began to plummet from 1929 and companies began to experience financial problems. The recession led to union of the four brands mentioned above, which was initiated by the State Bank of Saxony, and Auto Union AG became the second largest car maker in Germany by number of vehicles produced. The four former companies, now merged into Auto Union, maintained their own distinct areas of expertise. DKW made motorcycles and small cars, Wanderer produced mid-size cars while Audi concentrated on deluxe mid-size cars, and Horch was the luxury car arm of the enterprise. When Auto Union was formed in 1930 the four rings were seen as a badge for the first time. The name Auto Union was across the four rings and later the four rings symbolised the brand we know today as Audi.

AT only 16 years old, Luke Littler has become an overnight sensation following his astonishing performance at the World Darts Championship final. In recent weeks, Littler’s meteoric rise has captivated the darts world. His journey to the World Darts Championship final, which culminated in December at Alexandra Palace, has drawn comparisons to legends such as Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen, making him a new icon in the sport. Despite securing a runner-up prize of £200,000, Littler faces significant tax obligations. Investment firm Saxo estimates that he will owe £76,203 in taxes and £7,330 in national insurance. As a result, his net earnings will be approximately £116,467. Andrew Mangion from Saxo advised that such a large sum for a teenager is uncommon and professional financial guidance would be beneficial.

the record-breaking viewership of the championship’s final on Sky Sports, emphasising Littler’s wide-reaching appeal. Following his remarkable performance, Littler received an invitation to join this year’s Premier League tour. He accepted, and acknowledged the rarity of such opportunities. Littler expressed on Sky Sports his awareness of the fleeting nature of sporting success and his eagerness to seize every chance presented: “Let’s do it, it might not happen again,” he said. Littler’s rise to fame has also caught the attention of celebrities like Rio Ferdinand and Gary Lineker as well as other popular YouTubers. Some of whom have extended invitations to feature him on their podcasts. Additionally, football stars like Luke Shaw and Jesse Lingard, and even David Beckham, have shown their support.

Catherine McGeer IN a devastating loss to the world of football, Franz Beckenbauer, affectionately known as ‘Der Kaiser’ (The Emperor), has passed away at the age of 77. The iconic figure, revered as one of the greatest footballers in German history, breathed his last after a valiant battle against a prolonged illness that had kept him away from the public eye in recent months. Hailing from Munich, Beckenbauer revolutionised the role of the libero or the modern sweeper, reshaping it into an art form that defined his legacy. His genius on the field elevated both the national team and Bayern Munich to unprecedented heights. Beckenbauer’s crowning glory came in 1974 when he captained the West German national team, affectionately known as ‘Die Mannschaft,’ to clinch the World Cup. However, his contributions extended far beyond that triumph. He later secured another World Cup victory in 1990, this time as the coach of a unified German team. His stellar career also boasts the Euro Cup victory in 1972 and an astonishing three consecutive European Cup titles with Bayern Munich between 1974 and 1977. Beyond his unparalleled success with both club and country, Beckenbauer embodied elegance on the pitch coupled with an innate winning mentality that mesmerised fans worldwide. His exceptional leadership skills made him one of the most admired footballers of his era and cemented his place among the sport’s all-time greats. His individual brilliance was recognised with two Ballon d’Or awards in 1972 and 1976. The footballing world mourns the loss of a true legend whose impact transcended generations. Tributes poured in from fans, players, and football dignitaries.

Emma Raducanu
