TOPS or The Occasional Performance Society is a group of like minded people who like to get together to arrange events and put on shows to raise money for charity. Each year they choose different charities and then work all year to help them. Of course, the charity work is foremost, but they do love to entertain as well. And their first event of 2024 will be on Saturday February

10 at 8pm at Alhaurin Golf Clubhouse. Entertainment will be supplied by live band ‘Deja Vu’, the TOPS singers, and DJ ‘AI’. Tickets are €12 or €10 for TOPS members. All proceeds go to horse rescue charity ARCH whose mission is to provide the best care and rehabilitation for abandoned and abused horses. The charity works hard every day to offer these animals a better life. They

rely heavily on donations to cover the costs of rescuing and transporting animals to the Centre, giving them veterinary care and proper feeding in rehabilitation, and helping to meet the legal costs involved in prosecuting abusive owners. They could not exist without your support. For tickets call 627 293 609 or email the TOPS box office boxofficefortops@ gmail.com.

Oil and acrylics

Kevin Fraser Park THE Casa de Las Tejerinas in Estepona is hosting the first exhibition of paintings by José Antonio Merchán. The exhibition will open on Friday February 9 at 6.30pm and will be open to the public until February 21, with free admission. The exhibition of paintings ‘Óleos y Acrílicos’ by José Antonio Merchán will be inaugurated in Room 2 of the Casa de Las Tejerinas, located in the Plaza de las Flores. José Anto-

nio Merchán considers himself a self-taught painter who, “is learning with each of his works”. His paintings range from acrylics to oils, charcoals and watercolours. In this, his first exhibition, the painter is showing a total of 18 works of different formats and themes, such as portraits, landscapes and emblematic buildings like Malaga Cathedral and the Alhambra, among others. José Antonio Merchán Martín was born in the Malaga town of

Yunquera in 1977 and he currently lives in San Luis de Sabinillas. From an early age, when he was only 10 years old, he was fascinated by the painting of a neighbour from Yunquera, whom he liked to go and see. Since then, his hobby grew and, over the years, his paintings improved. The exhibition can be visited until February 21, from Tuesday to Friday, from 9am to 8pm, and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm and from 4pm to 8pm, free of charge.

‘VIVE Fuengirola con Amor’ (Live Fuengirola with Love) has programmed more than 20 events to liven up the town from February 12 to 18. The mayor, Ana Mula, accompanied by the councillor for Festivities, Isabel Moreno, presented the celebration, which will bring together various leisure, sporting and cultural events for all ages with the aim of commemorating Valentine’s Day in all the town’s neighbourhoods. More than 30 local businesses have joined this initiative. “Fuengirola is a lively town all year round; cheerful, open and dynamic. Many citizens from other places come here attracted by that and this, in turn, benefits our local economy,” said the mayor. It is an event that started in 2020

to promote economic activity in the area during this time of year when the town registers fewer visitors. The businesses involved in this initiative will also contribute by organising different activities individually or jointly and offering promotions and discounts on their services or products. “The aim is to continue to show that Fuengirola is a place to have a good time and to celebrate love in all its expressions. There will be music, magic, children’s theatre, sports, parades, cooking competitions and parties for singles, among other activities,” said Ana Mula. The full programme can be consulted on the town hall website

Music Hall

David Hart A WHIMSICAL Wonderment of Sensational Song, Dance and Showmanship will take you back to The Good Old Days at Salón Varietés Theatre in Fuengirola from Wednesday February 14 to Sunday February 18. The Great British Music Hall was a cultural phenomenon that thrived in the early Victorian era as an entertainment venue for theatre and musical acts. The popularity of the music hall made it a vital cultural and social institution embedded in British history. The music hall derives its origins from the 18th century coffee houses, saloon bars and taverns that existed across Europe. By the 1850’s music hall theatres solely dedicated to entertainment had evolved, providing a variety of acts with catchy songs and theatrical displays to entertain whilst people ate, drank and smoked. The music hall became synonymous with affordable entertainment in the Victorian era. The public were treated to a wide range of performances, from gymnastic acrobatics to singing

and dancing routines. Most people will remember music hall from TV’s ‘The Good Old Days’ which ran for 30 years on the BBC from 1953 to 1983. The audience dressed in period costume and joined in the singing. The show was compered throughout its whole run (except for the first two shows) by Leonard Sachs and, in the course of its run, featured about 2,000 performers. The Monumental Music Hall now comes to Fuengirola and shows are at 7.30pm each night apart from Sunday when the performance starts at 7pm. Tickets are available from the Theatre’s website.

Back to the 80s Michael Carrington THE Musical Duo revives the greatest hits of the 80s on their new national tour. Simant Dúo, consisting of he international trumpeter and European Culture Prize winner Rubén Simeó and the talented pianist Antonio Morant, return to the music scene with the new ‘Back to the 80s’ tour to present their third studio album, which, with the same name, was released in January. They will be stopping at Malaga on their tour, at Elcamm on Saturday

March 9 at 9pm. Tickets are available now from emotionalevents.es. Following the line of their previous and successful ‘Skyward tour’, the two virtuoso musicians will continue to demonstrate their ability to fuse genres and styles, making a tour of great international hits of the 80s. As the first preview of the new album, in November, Simant Duo premiered ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’, the timeless Bon Jovi classic that became an anthem of hope and motivation in 1986, which

now, 27 years later, the duo has reimagined, with a unique and audacious interpretation. The combination of talent, innovation and passion ensures that Simant Duo continue to make their unique mark on the contemporary music scene. The young Spaniards Rubén Simeó and Antonio Morant, together known as Simant Duo, have been working together since 2018, making recordings and performing more than 50 concerts annually.
