Tap filters saving water

FUENGIROLA Town Hall is going to distribute 6,000 tap filters, called aerators, in order to cut water consumption by 50 per cent. They are already being replaced in schools and municipal buildings and residents can collect up to three units per household at Gestagua’s facilities.

“Faced with this serious and exceptional situation we are experiencing, any gesture, any measure aimed at saving water, is important. Drilling, night-time pressure reduction, awareness campaigns... we are doing everything possible to deal with this situation and we will continue to take

the necessary decisions to guarantee the supply,” said Mayor Ana Mula, together with the delegate of Gestagua,

Target falls short

Kevin Fraser Park

CUDECA fell some €120,000 short of the target it had set itself during its Sunflower Movement campaign. The charity needed to raise €250,000 to be able to continue funding its two home help teams, but with the funds raised it only has enough to maintain one.

After three months of campaigning, it has managed to raise almost €130,000 with donations from public institutions,

Enrique Sánchez.

A perlator, aerator or atomiser is a small filter that can be easily fitted to the vast majority of domestic taps, replacing the previous filter, and which reduces the water flow by 50 per cent by mixing it with pressurised air, with hardly any noticeable reduction in the amount of water.

“They are very easy to install on taps and introduce pressurised air into the flow that is expelled thus reducing the volume of water without the user perceiving a lack of pressure,” explained the manager of Gestagua, Enrique Sánchez.

entities, partners and individual donors, to whom the NGO is grateful. These funds will enable a team to care for some 200 people in their homes and offer support and help to carers, estimated at 400 people.

Although the Movimiento Girasol fundraising campaign has ended, Cudeca is keeping different avenues open to continue raising funds. For information visit the website: movimientogirasol.org.

ESTEPONA Town Hall is organising, as part of the celebration of International Women’s Day, ‘Women’s self-protection workshops, with fear and stress management’ for women of all ages.

The workshops will be held on Saturdays - March 2 and 9, from 10am to 1pm, at the Padre Manuel Cultural Centre. Seating is limited to 30 people, so prior registration is required, which is free of charge, at the municipal Women’s Department.

The workshop will be given by qualified technical staff and the only requirement is that the participants wear sportswear. The aim of these workshops, financed with funds from the Ministry of Equality, Secretary of State for Equality and against Gender Violence, is as simple as it is important: to learn about tools to prevent an attack and to know how

Frozen hash

NATIONAL POLICE have arrested five members of a criminal organisation who stockpiled drugs for distribution in the UK in boxes of frozen food and have seized almost two tonnes of hashish from a property in Marbella. One of those arrested had an international arrest warrant against them.

More water

BENALMADENA Council is making a historic investment of almost €9 million to build new water reservoirs and drill boreholes to increase water resources. “These are necessary works that we can do now and guarantee more water for our town this summer,” said the mayor.

Private police

THE Supreme Court has upheld the suspension of a Guardia Civil who was found to be carrying out private protection work for members of the Saudi royal family during the summer of 2021. The officer accompanied several family members in Marbella and Puerto Banus.

Illegal water

AUTHORITIES in Malaga are investigating three golf courses in the province which are suspected of illegal use of water. The president of the Golf Federation however, insists that, “golf courses use regenerated water or water from their own wells which is not suitable for human consumption.”

Foreign workers

FOREIGNERS make up almost 15 per cent of the total workforce in Malaga Province, working mainly in the hotel and catering sector, commerce, construction, and real estate. Almost two thirds came from outside the EU.

Multi-national tourism

Brian Bamford

ACCORDING to data from the latest tourism bulletin, the Costa del Sol closed 2023 by consolidating its position as one of the main tourist destinations in the Mediterranean. The United Kingdom, France and the Netherlands were the main international markets for the Costa del Sol in 2023.

However, according to the latest tourism bulletin, the most representative growth by markets in the total for 2023 compared to 2022 is led by Poland with 45 per cent, followed by Finland (42.1

per cent), Ireland (31.3 per cent), Italy (30.4 per cent), the United States (25.7 per cent) and Germany (23 per cent).

In the period between

province

IT’S been 10 years since the last map of Malaga Province was published, and the latest one which was made public in February, reveals a growth in the population of urban areas and reinforces the urgency of improving mobility and water resources.

To date, editions of the Map of the Province have been published in 1972, 1987, 1991, 2000, 2005 and 2013. The map for 2023 reveals the expansion of the large metropolitan area of Malaga and the population growth in the 38 municipalities that make up the province. In the 10 years that separate the sixth and seventh editions of the map, these municipalities have gained a total of 107,479 extra inhabitants.

In that decade (2013-2023) there were signi cant population increases: 17,905 more people in Malaga City; 14,277 in Marbella; 8,989 in Estepona; 8,201 in Fuengirola; 6,799 in Benalmadena, and 6,091 in Mijas, among others.

Salado warned that the population projection recently published by the INE (the National Statistics Institute) makes it “urgent” to plan and forecast the infrastructure that the province needs. The INE states that the province will grow by 300,000 inhabitants in the coming years, so that by 2037 it will become the most populated in Andalucia.

January and December 2023, over six million travellers stayed in regulated accommodation and were registered on the Costa del Sol. Of these, there was an

almost 20 per cent increase in foreign travellers, to which must be added many more who stay in unlicensed apartments.

The CEO of Costa del Sol Tourism, Esperanza González, said, “the Costa del Sol is a booming destination with great potential for growth, especially at international level.” The countries that continue to lead in arrivals at Malaga airport are the United Kingdom (2,666,427 passengers between January and December 2023), Spain (2,009,098) and Germany (823,360).

Balcony of Love

ON February 14 Manilva Council inaugurated a new space dedicated to lovers and love in general: ‘El Balcón Del Amor’.

Conceived by the councillor for Culture, Fina Gómez, and executed by the Department of Infrastructure and Works, directed by Agustín Vargas, this site is located at the viewpoint at the entrance to the centre of Manilva where a metal structure in the shape of a heart has been installed, as well as two benches, all in red, so that residents and visitors can enjoy it.

In this beautiful structure, which is also illuminated, they will be able to place their padlocks as a symbol of love. In addition, a competition will be held for residents to take photographs of themselves in the enclave, to enter into a draw for a gift among those who send their images to the council’s email address.

Participants should send their photographs to the following email address: cultura@ayto-manilva. com.

Beacon of hope

IN response to the pressing need for accessible hygiene among the community’s most vulnerable populations, the charity, Collective Calling, has launched a Mobile Sanitary Unit initiative. Recognising that cleanliness is not just a matter of dignity but also a critical component of health and well-being, they’ve taken a signicant step to combat the lack of hygiene facilities.

The Mobile Sanitary Unit, essentially a mobile shower facility, is designed to provide a private, safe, and clean space for individuals who are homeless, displaced, or in any situation where regular access to showers is not available. The unit is equipped with individual shower stalls, clean towels, basic toiletries, and on-site attendants to ensure a smooth and comfortable experien-

ce for all users. By bringing essential services directly to those in need, the organisation is not only helping to improve personal hygiene but also aiming to reduce the risk of disease, and promote self-esteem. The unit is more than just a place to clean up; it’s a beacon of hope and a testament to the power of practical, compassionate action.

A HOUSE collapsed following major work that was being carried out on Avenida España in Estepona.

The work being carried out is part of the continued improvements to Estepona’s seafront promenade. The work to pedestrianise Avenida España has been going on for some time and the water company had been laying new pipework when the building collapsed on Wednesday February 14.

The popular souvenir shop was crushed as the entire building above fell directly onto the premises. Luckily no injuries were reported.

Although no o cial cause for the damage was con rmed, it would seem likely it was a direct consequence of the work being carried out on the public water network by the water company’s subcontractor.

Spanish for foreigners Under pressure

THE registration period for the Spanish course for foreigners in Cancelada is now open and will remain open throughout the month of February.

The course will be held at the town hall in Cancelada on Tuesdays from 7pm to 8.30pm.

The aim of this initiative is to give the foreign population of the municipality the opportunity to learn the language and thus encourage greater participation in social and cultural activities.

Nearly 30 per cent of Estepona’s population is made up of citizens of fo -

reign origin of more than 120 nationalities.

THE municipalities of the Western Costa del Sol region (Mancomunidad) are coordinating new measures to control the effects of the prolonged drought and among them is the reduction of water pressure. This will be carried out gradually in all the municipalities from Wednesday February 21.

These new measures follow the decision adopted by the Andalucian Drought Committee to limit water consumption to 160 litres per inhabitant per day for the entire province of Malaga, whereas up until now the limit was 200 litres per inhabitant per day.

The Mancomunidad, through the water company Acosol, will reduce the water pressure across the board to adjust to the new restrictions and alleviate as much as possible the consumption of the reservoir.

cillor in charge of Outreach, said that knowledge of Spanish, “will help our citizens to communicate better, to be able to participate in many educational and cultural activities, as well as to obtain better professional opportunities and personal connections.”

This initiative is part of the activities programmed for foreign residents. In addition to this course,

Cancelada Council has been offering other workshops and activities. In the field of sports, there is maintenance gymnastics, pilates, belly dancing, karate, rhythmic gymnastics, a golf school at El Paraíso golf club, and chess. Classes are also offered in English for children.

For any information about the courses, please call the Mayor’s Office in Cancelada on 952 883 785 .

This regulation of water will cause a reduction in pressure in all municipal drinking water supply networks, so that, as a result, there may be limitations on consumption that will coincide with night-time periods approximately between midnight and 6am every day of the week except Saturdays.

During these hours, there may be homes and commercial premises that do not have a water supply, mainly buildings that do not have a cistern, but also those located in higher areas and further away from the main network in each municipality.

The regulations issued by the Regional Government also enable penalties to be imposed on those users who consume water excessively, irresponsibly and unscrupulously, given the scarcity situation. Special attention will be paid to excessive consumption.

AIMS’ vision

John Smith

THERE is a new animal charity in Marbella which is run by a small team of animal lovers dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of dogs in need from puppies to those who are older.

Late last year at the Triple A AGM, a new board was voted in and they are now running that charity but there were a number of members who were thought that there could and should be room for a different type of refuge.

Thus they have created the Animals in Marbella Sanctuary (AIMS) and having gone through the process of registering it as a charity and finding a new facility (which is now being made ready), one

of the driving forces behind AIMS, the well-respected Lily Van Tongeren has spoken to Euro Weekly News about this new and much needed organisation.

Explaining the vision, Lily said “From previous experience we have identified areas of support that are needed the most for canines across the coast and beyond. We have an ethos of optimism, positivity and working together to achieve our goals. If you would like to know more, join the team or receive our newsletters please contact info@aim sanctuary.org.”

They are currently working remotely based in Marbella while they await the completion of their

new compound but in the meantime have already recruited a great team of foster carers who can look after dogs in a calm, safe and clean environment.

The new charity plans to offer a range of services to care for dogs in need which includes; Quality care rehoming and adoption facility. Training programmes for abandoned, adopted and private canines. Rehabilitation for dogs in need.

Sadly, there are always more dogs in need of assistance than there are options for caring, so the arrival of another facility like AIMS can only be welcomed and we will continue to report developments as they occur.

Lionesses in Marbella

ENGLAND’S women’s football squad is in Marbella to train as they prepare for the Euro 2025 qualifying rounds.

The team that made the World Cup finals, accompanied by the under-23 team, arrived on February 19 in Marbella at the Marbella Football Centre. The centre is recognised as one of the best high-performance centres to carry out training camps and pre-seasons for professional football teams.

The centre is playing host to a total of 60 teams from northern Europe as Marbella becomes the capital of women’s football in February with the celebration of the Marbella Week of Football for Absolute and Under-23 National Teams.

The England women’s squad will also be playing in two friendly matches at the Estadio Nuevo Mirador in Algeciras. The first match is against Austria on Friday February 23

at 8.45pm, followed by a match against Italy on Tuesday February 27 at 6pm. Tickets for these fixtures can be found on the Algeciras CF website.

“This will be our starting point to prepare for the Euro qualifying campaign beginning in April, so there’s no time to waste in February,” said England’s head coach Sarina Wiegman.

The under-23 squad will also train in Marbella

alongside the the reigning Euro champions. The under-23s will play Spain on Thursday February 22 at midday at the Marbella Football Centre before taking on the Netherlands on Monday February 26 at 1pm at the Puerto Banús Football Centre.

For Marbella’s foreign community this is a great opportunity to see the England women’s team in action and to give them some local support.

Feed a Child

THE final act of Duquesa Charitable Society of Saint George’s 2023 Christmas Campaign was the donation of €16,000 made to the Emaus Social Kitchen in Estepona in the middle of February for the ‘Feed a Child’ project, providing meals for local disadvantaged school children.

The St George Charity was founded at the beginning of 2013 as a fundraising organisation to provide funding, equipment and services to worthy causes within the local community. Among many activities, it runs a Christmas Gift Appeal for underprivileged children

in Manilva, Casares, and Estepona, children identified by Spanish Social Services as being in poverty.

The organisation wanted to extend heartfelt gratitude to all the volunteers, patrons, and

benefactors, with special recognition to Jojo Ruby France and Kathy Grant, whose exceptional efforts helped raise a substantial part of the over €18,000 collected during the Christmas Campaign.

Saturation point

THE Association of Hotel Businessmen of the Costa del Sol (AEHCOS) considers that the the coastal train is essential to alleviate the current saturation of the roads and is asking the Central Government for economic support to carry out a complete study with the aim of analysing the mobility situation in which the Costa del Sol finds itself.

The hotel employers’ association considers that the situation is blocked and that it requires the effort of

all the actors involved in order to unblock it. “If we do not take the necessary measures and start rowing in the same direction, the growth of the entire Costa de Sol will be hampered by the high saturation of its roads,” said José Luque, President of AEHCOS.

AEHCOS has produced its own data on commuting by workers in the hotel sector to reach their jobs from their homes, a problem exacerbated by the lack of long term rentals in certain areas which

means that longer journeys are required. This study shows that 4,160 workers, which is over 12 per cent of the total number of hotel workers, travel along stretches of the A-7 which adds up to a total of almost 2.3 million journeys per year.

The stretches with the highest number of road users according to the study are: between Marbella and Benahavis; between Estepona, Casares and Manilva and between Mijas and Fuengirola.

With the lack of water at the moment why are new properties being built when we are starting to have restrictions.”

More new homes? Connecting wells

FUENGIROLA Town Council is carrying out studies of groundwater wells to assess the possibility of connecting them to the supply network, provided they meet the necessary quality conditions for human consumption. This is a measure that forms part of the Municipal Drought Action Plan and is already taking shape in the town’s Recinto Ferial.

“We have been working for a long time to alleviate the consequences of the drought. In addition to all the saving measures decreed by the

In a recent statement, the President of Malaga Provincial Council, Francisco Salado, spoke of the urgency of improving mobility and water resources, “we need investment from the State in infrastructure,” said Salado.

There are plans to bring in water by boats from other regions in Spain and add new pipelines to connect the supply network to less drought-stricken areas. Meanwhile, Estepona is activating its plan against the drought with the installation of two desalination plants.

AN elaborately decorated medieval gold ring, likely to be from the 11th or 12th century, has been discovered buried beneath Wawel Castle, the former seat of Poland’s kings in the city of Kraków. It is the only one of its kind ever found on Polish territory reported Notes from Poland.

Lord of the ring

The ring was discovered during archaeological research in the basement of the Danish Tower, the Wawel Royal Castle has announced. According to the researchers, the found monument is unique due

to its decoration, depicting two faces.

“Wawel Castle constantly surprises us. An extremely rare discovery has recently been made in the form of an early medieval gold ring,” - the Wawel Royal Castle announced on social media on Monday. The relic was found during archaeological research in the basement of the Danish Tower and is dated to the 11th to 12th centuries.

According to a study by Jerzy Trzebinski of the Wawel Royal Castle Archaeology Department, “only a few early medieval gold rings are known from the whole of Poland. Ornaments of this type were usually completely devoid of ornamentation or contained geometric ornamentation. The specimen unearthed at Wawel is unique because of its ornamentation. It is the only example where human images are depicted on an early medieval ring from Poland.”

Pelican not golf term

John Smith

GOLF appeals to many people, but those out on a golf course in the town of Vught in Holland often dreamed of making a birdie or even an albatross but never a pelican!

They were surprised to see a healthy looking pink-backed pelican take up residence on the golf course in early February and it could be seen that it had a ring around its leg so had clearly escaped from somewhere.

Members of the Den Bosch Animal Ambulance Service confirmed that it had been spotted in different parts of the country prior to its arrival at the golf course and several days were spent trying to lure it with the offer of juicy cuts of fish. Eventually, they were successful and after snaffling it whilst asleep the pelican calmly allowed them to give it a ride in a golf buggy before it was transferred to a se-

cure site for a health check. Information from the ring on its leg told experts that it had been a resident of Lithuania, lived in a Dutch zoo until 2019 when it was transferred to a Belgian

zoo and it was from there that it made its escape several weeks earlier.

Once rested and fed, it was returned across the border to its unnamed Belgian home.

Pizza perfection

George Cunningham IS there such a thing as too much pizza?

Eric Decker, also known as Airrack on YouTube, has a knack for breaking records, especially when it comes to pizza.

In the past year, he achieved two remarkable feats: creating the largest pizza and visiting the most fast-food restaurants in 24 hours.

Teaming up with Pizza Hut, Airrack helped make a massive pizza at the Los Angeles Convention Centre.

This pizza measured a whopping 1,296 square metres, breaking the previous record by over 34 square metres.

It was made with over 6,000 kilogrammes of dough, 2,200 kilogrammes of sauce, nearly 4,000 kilogrammes of cheese, and over 630,000 pieces of pepperoni.

This huge pizza celebrated Pizza Hut’s ‘Big New Yorker”’ pizza, reminiscent of New York-style pies.

Airrack’s love for New York-style pizza inspired his next adventure: breaking the record for visiting the most fast-food restaurants in 24 hours.

He specifically chose pizza places in New York City for his challenge.

Airrack and his team visited pizza joints across Manhattan at midnight.

They encountered some closures in the early morning but resumed their quest later. By 4.00pm, they had visited 45 pizza places and picked up the pace to reach their goal of 100 before time ran out.

With determination, they achieved their target just in time.

Hoover drama

THE discovery of a €750,000 ring, which had gone missing at the Ritz hotel in Paris, has brought relief to its owner, a Malaysian businesswoman who was staying at the hotel.

After filing a complaint with the police, suspecting theft, the woman’s ring was eventually found in an unexpected place - the vacuum cleaner.

Security guards at the Ritz stumbled upon the valuable ring lying among the dust in a vacuum bag, much to the surprise and delight of the guest.

The woman had initially travelled to London but returned to Paris specifically to retrieve her missing ring.

According to the businesswoman, she had left the ring on a table in her hotel room while she went shopping in the city for a few hours.

Upon her return, she found it missing.

This incident adds to a history of jewellery-related incidents at the Ritz.

In 2018, the hotel was targeted by armed robbers who stole over €4 million worth of merchandise from a jewellery shop located within the premises.

Additionally, later that same year, a member of the Saudi royal family reported the theft of hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of jewellery from her suite at the hotel.

Powerful passport

SPAIN has taken the crown as the world’s most powerful passport, surpassing Singapore, according to a new index released by VisaGuide. World.

This marks a departure from the Henley Passport Index, where Singapore held the top spot previously.

In VisaGuide.World’s index, Japan is the only non-European country in the top 20, securing the 15th position.

The top ranks are dominated by European nations, with Germany following Spain in third place, followed by Italy, France, the Netherlands, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Czechia, Portugal, Hungary, and Luxembourg.

Austria ranks 16th, with Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, and Poland completing the top 20.

Both the Henley Passport Index and VisaGuide.World’s Passport Index assess the number of destinations passport holders can access wi-

thout a visa. While Henley’s ranking is yet to be released, VisaGuide.World considers various factors beyond visa-free access to create a ‘destination significance score’ for each country.

This score takes into account entry policy, GDP, global power, and tourism development. Visa-free access to countries with a higher destination significance score earns more points in the index. As of December 2023, Spanish passport holders can travel to 160 countries and territories without a visa.

Selfie bans

Bob Marquess

SELFIE bans at tourist spots are becoming more common, and for good reason: they save lives.

A study published in the Journal of Travel Medicine found that selfie-related deaths have surpassed fatalities from shark attacks.

Over 13 years, there were 379 selfie-related deaths, with 140 involving tourists, compared to 90 fatal shark encounters.

In Venice, Italy, a gondola nearly capsized because tourists were too focused on taking selfies instead of listening to safety warnings.

Thankfully, there were no injuries, but the incident could have ended tragically.

People risk their lives for the perfect selfie, leading to fatal falls from cliffs, accidents with vehicles and trains, dangerous encounters with wildlife, and drownings.

Authorities are taking action, imposing fines and even jail time for reckless selfie behaviour.

For example, a woman died while at-

port holders enjoy access to 164 countries, Spain’s points are bolstered by its ability to visit numerous places with just an ID card under the European Union. Though Singapore grants visa-free access to 15 countries not accessible to Spain, the reverse is also true for Spain, which has visa-free entry to 11 countries and territories not available to Singapore. While Germany shares visa-free access to the same 160 countries as Spain, Spain benefits from visa-on-arrival facilities in Papua New Guinea and Togo, which Germany does not have.

tempting a selfie at Prabalgad Fort in India, and a spectator’s selfie caused a massive pile-up during the 2023 Tour de France.

Portofino, Italy, introduced a temporary selfie ban to prevent tourists from obstructing traffic while taking photos.

The desire for attention and validation on social media often drives reckless behaviour, causing people to ignore safety warnings or venture into dangerous areas.

On average, victims were 24.4 years old, with women more likely to die from falls or animal encounters, and men more likely to die in transport-related incidents.

India, the United States, and Russia have the highest number of selfie-related deaths.

THE Central Statistics Office (CSO) added air fryers, gin and disposable vapes to the basket of items and services used to calculate the annual inflation rate. Landlines, swiss rolls and digital cameras are amongst newly-excluded goods “as they no longer play a significant a role in consumer spending,” the CSO said.

The service has said that the lack of space means the problem can only get worse and before long it will be difficult to accommodate those on remand and as well as those serving terms.

NORWAY DENMARK

Marmite okay

NORWAY’S English-speaking media came to the recue of Marmite recently after Anglican vicar and author Richard Coles claimed that it was banned. Not so, The Local, stated, clarifying that the love-it-hate-it yeast extract spread needs special authorisation in neighbouring Denmark as it is fortified with added vitamins.

AN aircraft bound for Stockholm was slightly damaged after its wingtip hit a fence when leaving the gate at Oslo airport on February 14. Although no-one was injured, this was the third incident in a fortnight after a plane clipped another aircraft’s wing on February 13 and a third collided with the same fence on February 2.

BELGIUM

Cashing in

SHOPS may no longer refuse cash under recent legislation although Unizo, which represents small and medium-sized businesses, described the decision as “bullying” and attempting to solve a non-existent problem. The legislation is in line with EU regulations and means that business which repeatedly refuse cash can be fined.

Big Freeze

THE Belgian government told the EU and the G7 that Ukraine’s financial problems could be helped by allowing it to raise funds from private sector lenders by using Russian central bank assets currently frozen by sanctions. Belgium suggested the strategy because most of these assets are held in Europe and G7 countries.

ITALY FRANCE

Iraq gift

ITALY presented Iraq with a replica of the Ninth Century BC, five-metre-tall Bull of Nimrod which Isis terrorists destroyed in 2015 by bulldozing the archaeological site 30 kilometres from Mosul. The statue was recreated by Italian artists who consulted images and video footage to copy the monument using 3D-printing technology.

Call up

THE European Union should create an army to prevent conflict and oversee peacekeeping missions, declared Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, a former president of the European parliament. Other EU members were less keen with Spain, Denmark, Poland and Slovenia labelling the proposal ‘unrealistic and unnecessary’.

NETHERLANDS

ANIMAL welfare organisations in the Rotterdam area asked the city council to tackle the problem of abandoned poultry after its animal collection service failed to pick up a cockerel abandoned in a hotel room. Police later collected it and took it to Zwerfkip en Zo, which finds homes for abandoned animals.

Fair dues

A FRENCH court ruled that funeral homes must pay royalties for music played during services and ordered OGF, one of the country’s largest funeral companies, to pay €80,000 and €37,000 to two copyright associations. Applauded as ‘a win’ for artists, critics said the measure was “an insensitive money grab.”

That’s rich

MORE than 50 per cent of France’s 34 government ministers, including the 34-yearold PM Gabriel Attal, are millionaires, researchers found after scouring data made available to the public under transparency laws. A quarter of the ministers also belonged to the one per cent of the population classed as ‘super-rich’.

FINLAND

Strike-stricken

INLAND’S spate of strikes over the last two months has cost the economy approximately one billion euros, the Confederation of Finnish Industries (EK) calculated. The latest stoppages affected bus-drivers and petrol station employees on February 14, followed by dockers on February 15 and 17.

No change

MOST Finns are satisfied with the country’s alcohol laws, with 57 per cent seeing no reason to change them, although 11 per cent told a recent survey that they would like to see regulations tightened up. Forty-four per cent said they would like to buy wine in shops instead of the state-owned Alko monopoly.

Cliff breakup

A SECTION of the white limestone and chalk Mons Klint cliffs, a popular tourist spot on the island of Mons, broke away on February 13 after a period of prolonged and heavy rain. This was the second incident in the area so far this winter, following a more serious landslide at the beginning of January.

Rainy season

DENMARK experienced its wettest February in more than 10 years with 59 millimetres falling during the first half of the month. This was 29 per cent more than the usual monthly figure of 50.3 millimetres but lagging behind 2020 when the country’s weather stations recorded an unprecedented 135 millimetres.

Mystery wall

INVESTIGATORS from Rostock and Christian-Albrechts universities discovered a one-kilometre section of stone wall off the Mecklenburg-Western Pomeria coast estimated to be more than 10,000 years old. Built when the area was above sea level and densely wooded, experts believe its purpose was linked to reindeer hunting.

Not enough

A SURVEY for the Resolution Foundation think tank found that 11 million people of working age in the UK did not have savings of at least £1,000 (€1,170). Many of the British faced a “triple challenge” of insufficient savings, inability to cope financially with major life events and inadequate pensions, the Foundation said.

Idealista deal

SWEDISH private equity company EQT has engaged Morgan Stanley to sell the Spanish property website, Idealista, four years after acquiring a majority stake. The company is valued at approximately €2.5 billion, Reuters reported, but the process is still at an early stage with the sale unlikely until the second half of 2023.

EIGHTY-FIVE employees will be made redundant at the Coca Cola plants in Madrid and Barcelona, the company’s total staff reductions in Spain is now 100. The company intends to restructure jobs, grouping together all customer services, human resources and business operations in Bulgaria, union officials said.

Aldi ploy

ALDI is spending £550 million to attract more customers, with plans to open 500 stores in town centres and suburbs.

Although the German discounter is the UK’s fourthlargest chain, its market share fell from 10.2 per cent in September 2023 to 9.3 per cent in January this year.

Inflation holds steady

THE UK’s annual inflation rate remained at 4 per cent in January despite rising energy prices and the cost-of-living crisis.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the expected rise failed to materialise, despite Bank of England predictions of a slight increase while City economists polled by Reuters anticipated a climb of 4.2 per cent increase.

Core inflation, which excludes energy, food, alcohol and tobacco, remained unchanged at 5.1 per cent, while services’ inflation rose to 6.5 per cent in January, up from 6.4 per cent the previous month.

Grosvenor, the Duke’s property company is currently disposing of direct assets throughout Europe, hoping to sell four office blocks in Madrid that include the headquarters of gas supply company Naturgy and the Unicaja bank.

“Hopefully that’s something that you’re seeing in your businesses, but inflation has been more than halved from 11 per cent down to 4 per cent,”

Some of Britain’s oldest money is based on one of the most important property portfolio in London that boasts exclusive prime sites in Mayfair, Fitzrovia, Covent Garden and Soho.

Grosvenor investments in Spain have ranged from shopping centres to luxury developments, but after marketing its residential investments the group is now focusing on the Madrid buildings.

According to sources quoted in the financial daily Cinco Dias, Grosvenor has wanted to sell the four office blocks

he said.

Last month’s better-than-predicted cost of living news is set to be followed by inflation falling to the government’s 2 per cent target by spring. January was the first time it dipped to this level since July 2021, after which it rose to 11.1 per cent in October 2022 before beginning a gradual decline. The latest ONS figures could pave the way for a cut in the current 5.25 per cent interest rate, which has risen 14 times between December 2021 and August 2023. The hoped-for reduction would help to boost personal spending and, in turn, the economy.

since 2022 although so far offers have been too low owing to the effect of high interest rates on investments.

Sales of offices have also been affected by the switch to working from home that was introduced during the pandemic.

A HUNGARIAN consortium confirmed on February 9 that it hopes to take over 100 per cent of Spain’s Talgo.

No agreement has yet been reached, although according to media reports Magyar Vagon would pay €5 per share for the emblematic rolling stock manufacturer.

The Hungarian company admitted that the bid might not be successful although the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) lifted its trading ban on trading Talgo shares on February 12.

Magyar Vagon first needs approval from the Spanish government as well as Talgo’s principal shareholders, Pegaso Transportation (40 per cent) and the Torrblas investment company (5 per cent).

MARKS & SPENCER launched a High Court battle on February 14 against the government’s decision to block plans for its Marble Arch store.

The chain is arguing that “inconsistent” Housing Secretary Michael Gove has “misinterpreted and wrongly applied planning policy” for M&S’s multimillion revamp of the Art Deco landmark.

This entails demolishing and replacing the 1929 building with a 10-storey block “to bring it up to modern standards” while allocating only two and half floors to retail space.

In the meantime, similar projects across the UK have been put on hold as developers await the outcome of the M&S case.

HEPATITIS B drug Bepirovirsen produced by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has been fast-tracked by US regulators and will now reach the market sooner.

The medication “addresses an unmet medical need”, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in yet another boost for the UK-based pharmaceutical giant whose strong results enabled it to upgrade its growth forecast from 5 to 7 per cent in January.

GSK sales rose 5 per cent to £30.3 billion (€35.5 billion) in 2023 with an operating profit that increased by 12 per cent to £8.8 billion (€10.3 billion).

EUROPEAN multinational Basf, the world’s largest chemical producer, will spend €500 million on a car battery recycling plant in Tarragona.

Once completed, the installation will be the biggest of its yet built in Europe to recover nickel, cobalt, lithium, copper and manganese on this scale. It is also expected to provided jobs for 200 people.

Basf has received at least three packages of public money totally €125 million but although the company has not yet disclosed the sums involved, a company spokesperson confirmed to the El Pais newspaper that the future operation was going ahead. Sources close to the Basf project, who preferred not to remain anonymous, revealed that the project had grown since its inception and that the €500 million investment was likely to be closer to €700 million.

VIRGIN MEDIA O2, owned by Telefonica and Liberty Global, are again in talks with TalkTalk. The Telefonica subsidiary negotiated in 2022 to acquire Talk Talk in a £3 billion (€3.5 billion) transaction but failed to reach an agreement.

Talk Talk has approximately four million UK customers and 2.4 million fibre connections, and a deal would strengthen Virgin Media 02’s position as a rival to BT, which traditionally dominates the British market.

At the same time, Telefonica faces competition from rivals and insiders commented that a formal offer for Talk Talk would increase pressure on Vodafone, which could launch a counterbid.

It has agreed a deal to sell a 36 per cent stake to private equity group L Catterton, which is a partnership between another luxury group, France’s LVMH and the family investment group belonging to its founder Bernard Arnault.

Tod’s will receive €43 per share, an 18 per cent premium on the closing price for the company’s shares on February 9 which puts a value of around €512 million on the company.

BRITISH GAS 2023’s operating profits soared from £75 million (€87.7 million) in 2022 to £751 million (€878.2 million).

Centrica, British Gas’s parent company, explained that changes to gas and electricity regulator Ofgem’s energy price cap allowed them to compensate for costs sustained during the pandemic and by taking on the customers of failed competitors.

Ideal site

POWERCO’S €3 billion gigafactory in Sagunto (Valencia), which will produce an annual 500,000 batteries for electric vehicles that are produced at Volkwagen’s (VW) Martorell and Pamplamo plants, will use desalinated sea water. It was Sagunto’s coastal location that made it perfect for the new factory, the VW subsidiary explained.

Romantasy pays

LONDON-LISTED

Bloomsbury Publishing upgraded its revenue and profit forecasts amid growing demand for “romantasy” novels.

The London-listed company expects a full-year revenue of £291.4 million (€341.1 million) and pre-tax profits of £37.2 million (€43.5 million) compared with £264.1 million (€309.1 million) and £25.4 million (€29.7 million) in 2023. Shares have also risen by a record 11.5 per cent.

Out of service

INFRASTRUCTURE development company ACS is selling its services subsidiary Clece.

The company hopes to raise €700 million from the sale and concentrate on its construction and concessions business. Analysts said that ACS is following in the footsteps of competitors and returning to its origins by divesting itself of its services companies.

Ferrovial, for instance, sold Infrastructure Services to Madrid-based Portobello Capital in 2021 and its Environmental Services company to PreZero that same year. In 2019 its Australian services business went to the Ventia Services Group and a UK subsidiary, Amey, was sold to One Equity Partners, in 2022.

Sacyr, in 2023, sold Valoriza Services to Morgan Stanley for €734 million.

Bloomsbury, which publishes the Harry Potter books by JK Rowling who is now worth more than £1 billion (€117 billion, has enjoyed buoyant sales since the pandemic lockdowns re-awoke an interest in reading.

The company is now profiting from a growing taste for romantasy - a combination of romance and fantasy - whose authors include Samantha Shannon and Cixin although Sarah J Maas is arguably Bloomsbury’s leading provider of the genre.

Her latest book, which was released at the end of January 2024, has reached the Number One spot in the UK, the US and Australia.

Bloomsbury’s chief executive Nigel Newton has described Ms Maas, as a “publishing phenomenon”, who has produced 15 books and is under contract to provide a further six. “We are very fortunate to have signed her up with her first book 13 years ago,” Newton said.

Inflation up Fallen icon

SPAIN’S inflation rose from 3.1 per cent in December 2023 to 3.4 per cent in January after IVA added-value tax on electricity rose from 5 to 10 per cent as the government phases out concessions for small consumers. If fuel prices had not dropped slightly, January’s inflation would have been still higher, the National Statistics Institute (INS) said.

THE BODY SHOP, acquired by private equity group Aurelius in November 2023, went into administration on February 13, endangering the future of 100 of its 200 shops and putting more than 2,000 jobs at risk. Trading will continue during the process, according to the administrators who said they were considering “all options” for the former high street favourite.

Botanical boost

BOTANICAL supplements have surged in popularity as natural allies in enhancing wellness and complementing nutrition. Derived from plants, these supplements are sought for their potential to support various aspects of health.

For instance, turmeric, with its active compound curcumin, is renowned for its anti-inflammatory properties and is often used to combat joint pain and boost cognitive function. Echinacea is another popular choice, hailed for its immune-boosting capabilities, particularly during cold and flu season.

Lastly, milk thistle is esteemed for its liver-protective qualities, aiding in detoxification and liver function.

These supplements, when used responsibly and under professional guidance, can offer a more holistic approach to health management, harnessing the power of nature’s bounty to support the body’s natural healing processes.

However, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider before adding any new supplements to your routine to ensure they are appropriate for your individual health needs.

Preparing for spring

AS the seasons transition from the cooler darker winter days to the vibrant, lively spring, it’s crucial to adapt your skincare routine to embrace the change. Preparing your skin for spring involves rejuvenating and protecting it to reveal its natural radiance.

Start by exfoliating gently to shed the win ter’s accumulation of dead skin cells, enabling your skin to breathe and regenerate.

This step is vital for promoting a smoother, more even complexion.

Hydration is key during this transition. Switch to a lighter moisturiser that balances mois ture levels without overwhelming your skin, as the air beco mes warmer and more humid. Incorporating a hydrating serum rich in antioxidants can also boost your skin’s defen

se against environmental stressors, enhancing its glow.

Sun protection becomes increasingly important in spring. A broad-spectrum SPF should be an integral part of your daily routine to shield your skin from harmful UV rays,

mature ageing and maintaining skin health.

Lastly, don’t forget to update your skincare products to suit your skin’s changing needs, opting for formulas that nourish and protect.

By following these steps, you’ll ensure your skin is beautifully prepared for spring, reflecting the season’s freshness

Rare egg stolen

THE very first egg laid by the female of the incredibly rare pair of red-necked ostrich was stolen from the zoological reserve at the MiniHollywood Oasys in Tabernas on Sunday February 18.

Now extinct in the wild only 40 male and less than 38 female red-necked ostrich (Struthio camelus camelus) are known to exist on the entire planet and all are part of a Captive Breeding Conservation programme in zoos around the world.

The arrival of the first egg was considered a triumph when the female, named Carlota laid the egg but within a matter of hours it had disappeared, presumably removed by a member of the public who must have jumped into their enclosure and made off with the egg.

THE Consell de Mallorca’s 11th Serra de Tramuntana Children’s Race Circuit kicked off at Raixa on Saturday, February 17. The races, designed for children, youths, and adults, saw about 250 participants taking part, with distances ranging from 150 metres for the youngest runners to 4,500 metres for adults.

This year’s events will extend to 10 municipalities, including three new locations at Esporles, Estellencs, and Pollenca, all have been designed to showcase the beauty of Mallorca’s landscapes.

Simply soaring

IN a recent announcement, the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport set new records with a total of 958,088 passengers and 6,468 flights.

This marks a 20.5 per cent increase in passengers and an 18.8 per cent increase in flights compared to January 2023.

The growth is driven by international travellers, accounting for 805,602 passengers, up 22.1 per cent from the previous year.

The recovery of the British market in the airport area and its great connectivity with 20 airports in the United Kingdom, as well as the good performance of other international destinations during the winter months, have made it possible to reach this volume of travellers.

Among international travellers, the UK led with 287,555 passengers, followed by the Netherlands (77,631), Belgium (63,598), Poland (61,901), and Germany (56,392).

The data from surveys conducted by INE highlight significant increases in tourism from France and Germany, with 27.6 per cent and 18.7 per cent growth, respectively.

Nuria Montes, Tourism councillor, emphasised the importance of these figures, underscoring the Valencian Community’s standing as an international tourist destination. The government will further promote the region in 2024, with over 150 promotional activities in 20 markets.

What to do when you can’t stop drinking

MANY of us choose the beginning of the year to try and cut back, or stop drinking all together; and, for a lot of people a ‘Dry January’ isn’t a problem. However, there are those who will have found it difficult, or even impossible! Who despite promising a loved one they would reduce their alcohol consumption; maybe for health and financial reasons, or to save a relationship; they couldn’t make it past the end of the first week, or even the first day.

What is the answer when you just can’t seem to give up the booze? When the idea of going a day without alcohol terrifies you, never mind a whole month.

Millions of people worldwide, struggle with problems related to alcohol use. If you often drink more or for longer than you planned too; have tried to cut back (or stop) and found you couldn’t; drink to deal with feelings and emotions; or if your drinking is interfering with your life - your responsibilities, relationships, finances, or health. Then you could have a problem with alcohol.

There is a solution, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a 12 Step fellowship support group, that has helped people all over the world, with their problem drinking. If the consequences of your alcohol use are getting too much, if you are ready to stop drinking, or want support to help you try, then don’t wait until it gets any worse.

“Lizzie and Nate; two members of Alcoholics Anonymous who both started drinking in their early teens; talk about how following the suggestions given to them in AA, has changed their lives, for the better.

LIZZIE - “I started drinking in my early teens, and it was superb! It made me feel like a grown up. My drinking was a problem from the very start. I first came to AA when I was 25 years old, following an assault, that was 100 per cent the fault of alcohol.

“For the first 18 years, I would gain a period of sobriety, and then follow it with a relapse. Each relapse it got worse. The last time was horrific because my children saw me drunk and out of control, I felt like I was a monster in their eyes. Since then, I have committed to the 12-step programme, as was suggested to me, and as a result I have changed the way I think. I sometimes wish I had ‘got it’ the first time, but that was not my journey and there is a reason for that. My life now is manageable. My ego is under control, in its box. I needed to change the way I thought, to enable me to be happy.”

Call the English-speaking AA helpline for support: +34 600 379 110 or visit the website for help and information

www.aacostadelsol.com

NATE - “My drinking got started when I was about 14. I was never able to make the equation that it was alcohol that was the cause of my problems. I had lost girlfriends, then wives! They had all pointed out that a big part of our relationship problems was that I did not drink normally. I lost my driver’s licence because of driving drunk. I lost my friends because I beat them up whilst drunk. It was not until my current wife gave up on me, that I sought help in AA.

“That was 10 years ago. By following the suggestions given freely to me, I know that I never have to drink again. To anyone struggling with alcohol, I would suggest finding a local AA meeting as soon as possible, we can’t do this alone, we need help.”

There are meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, with friendly people who will understand, held daily throughout the Costa del Sol. Meetings are free to attend, and anyone who thinks they may have a problem with alcohol is welcome.

Back to flower power

LEE SAYS IT

OTHERS THINK IT

IT’S all too much ennit? I wanna go back to flower power, the overwhelming presence of peace and love; a blissful time, when our young lives were spiritedly enlightened by wispy joints, a cheap bottle of wine and the occasional ‘upper’.

The nearest you ever got to politics was the sporadic glimpse of an amicable politician, enjoying a bottle of bubbly and surrounded by young beauties in a popular local club. No chance. I’ve just been listening to youngsters presenting their news programme on TV. Young, ill-informed lives who have been totally brainwashed by the left, virtually appearing to blame Israel for every move against the Palestinians and completely ignoring Hamas, a terrorist organisation who actually began this present conflict by killing and beheading the young and elderly Israelis as they were relaxing in the comfort of their own homes. On it all goes.

Even the 50s and 60s gangsters kept problems within their own environments. Not anymore. World leaders have changed all that. Putin is of course your classic gangster. He is undoubtedly an ego maniac. He is surrounded by thugs, hit men, bent politicians and ‘financial advisers’. He rubs out or ‘subdues’ any opposition as a warning to others, runs a money laundering operation on a gigantic scale and, although it appears to be waning, most of the general public within his domain still consider him a hero. You don’t get more classic than that. Of course, that is where the resemblance ends. He makes the Capone Gotti’s and mafia dons of this world look like pussies. Throughout all this dangerous and worrying era we can however all console ourselves with one fact; Putin won’t attack the West, nuclear or otherwise.

Why would he? He still earns most of his ill-gotten gains from the West. He’s not involved in skullduggery from a view of patriotism or communistic ideals. He’s in it for the power and the money. Despite its opposition, taking out the UK would be like

Al Capone destroying Chicago. He definitely doesn’t want to obliterate a future golden egg of our magnitude. I do however still consider a nuclear war could be a possibility. I truly believe that the world is closer than it has ever been, even during the Cuban missile crisis. At least in those days the USA and the USSR pulled just about all the strings. Both of these powers were fairly stable and had reasonably sane leaders. Now they are all at it. And a number are nowhere near predictable or, in my opinion, particularly sane. Kim Jong Un with North Korea, run by a man boy who thinks he’s playing video games. Iran, ruled by a paranoid regime who believe that the more you take with you the more virgins you get in the afterlife. China, who peer at the world through ever more narrowing eyes. And the two bill toppers, a megalomaniac who assassinates his political rivals and another who should be put out to graze. Peace and love to y’all out there? Some chance.

Keep the faith

Love Leapy.

Brussels smallest house

WHAT is believed to be the smallest house in Brussels has been put up for sale at an asking price of €195,000.

Having an internal dimension of just 60 square metres, it still manages to offer two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and shower room but even the agent agrees that it needs modernisation.

They try to put a positive spin on this unusual property which is sandwiched in between two other larger houses by stating on their website “A unique property that is ideal for anyone that is looking for originality, charm and something that is exceptional”.

At just 2.15 metres wide, the door takes up much of the frontage and it is clear that it has been

built on to at the back and into the roof as some of the rooms are much larger than might initially be expected from first sight of the exterior although it does supposedly have a landscaped garden.

Although it is in a much sought after and expensive area, the agents admit that there have only been four viewings so far but with typical estate agent’s bravado suggest that it would be an ideal purchase for an architect who could prove how skilful they were in making the most of limited space.

Happy 85th Birthday Val

As well as being one of the best-known faces on the Costa del Sol, Val Williams is a force of nature. Celebrating her 85th birthday on 21st February, Val, as is her way, is celebrating in style and raising money for good causes in the process.

ONLY Val could write an autobiography called ‘A Pickled Past’ which tells her story in a vivid and humorous manner, turning disasters into opportunities, and moving forward as if they had never happened.

Val became even better known along the Costa when Covid and all of its repercussions struck. Concerned about the impact on businesses she launched with, the help of some other well-known faces, the Simply Surviving Group. Val also recognised the dreadful situation many of the charities were in without the opportunity to raise funds, especially the animal charities. Then, of course there were the families that were struggling and Val raised thousands of euros in the first year to help groups like the ‘food fairies’, with many animal charities also benefiting from the lunches she organised, and in the process helping out the restaurants which hosted the events. Val has

also been supported by well-known entertainers on the coast.

Val is fearless, and, already in her 80’s, she undertook the Zip Line Challenge, of course, to raise more funds for

good causes. Once life was returning to some kind of normal, and survival became less of an issue for many, Val decided that raising money for good causes shouldn’t stop and she changed the

name of the group to Simply Thriving and the show goes on. Val spent Valentine’s Day with her good friend and designer, Brian Piccolo, who has made sure Val will shine on her birthday in a cerise dress with lace top and a chiffon skirt.

Everyone at the Euro Weekly News would like to wish Val the happiest of birthdays, and the energy to keep on going. So many local groups and people will join us in our congratulations for a woman who cannot be stopped, and is simply the best.

Happy Birthday, Val, from all your friends on the Costa del Sol and from everyone you have helped and supported over these difficult years. May you go from strength to strength.

It is a series of small-format concerts that will take place in La Baltasara and are aimed at anyone interested to enjoy this musical and sensory experience promoted by the podcast Tofeelmore.

These events come to Alhaurin el Grande thanks to Tofeelmore, a musical podcast created by Javier Muñoz, which for the last five years has been covering new musical creations and trends in the music scene, and which will take place in the incomparable setting of the gardens of the Casa Museo Antonio Gala.

The Antonio Gala House Museum consists of a main house and outbuildings, gardens and vegetable gardens that make up the estate of 30,000 square metres on the banks of the Fahala River.

Olivia’s new vision and new menu

AS OLIVIA’S, LA CALA, prepares for a new season, it welcomes a new team. Gareth (Gaz) Jones returns to Olivia’s as manager, and Paulo Ristori, originally from Venice, takes command of the kitchen with a culinary vision which will make Olivia’s stand out with its own unique style.

With two very demanding jobs, Gareth and Paolo have great plans to take Olivia’s forward by placing their own stamp on this stunning location. “We want to keep all of the great things which Olivia’s has become well-known for, “says Gareth, “but at the same time create new experiences for our clients.”

Paolo has worked in various parts of the world in his 25 years in the kitchen and explains, “I love traditional Mediterranean cuisine. It’s hard to beat, but I love the challenge of combining this with newer techniques. The key to good food is sourcing high quality, local produce.” When pushed by EWN, Paolo admits that his signature dish reflects his roots; Risotto with black ink, and a little something special on the top.

Gareth explains that managing a busy venue has its own challenges. “Everyone has to work together in harmony, but the client will always come first. My task is to find the highest quality staff to ensure that from the moment a client walks into Olivia’s their experience begins. Our aim is to please everyone and there is no compromise on this.”

Together, Gareth and Paolo want to create a new style which will be accompanied by a new menu. “We

want to create the same great experience Olivia’s has become renowned for, with an excellent dinner, live music, and we are adding our own signature cocktails this season,” explains Gareth.

Paolo also tells of the new Saturday Brunch afternoon which will be available very soon. “It will be a di-

fferent experience,” explains Paolo, “but we will make sure that no one leaves disappointed.”

The Sky Bar, located on the upper terrace will also open this year, especially for those who may like a special experience after dinner, or just stopping in for one of our cocktails. “They can sit relaxed, away from

the busyness of the restaurant and watch the sun set from the beautiful setting of the Sky Bar. What can be better than relaxing with the fantastic Mediterranean views from the terrace?” asks Gareth.

Gareth has worked with owner Elliott Wright for over 15 years which shows the confidence placed in the new manager. Gareth admits that getting it all just right for the client will be his priority. “You have to have eagle eyes to make sure that nothing is overlooked: some heating on the chillier evenings, or a blanket, ensuring that orders are taken promptly and passed in an orderly manner to Paolo so that everything can be prepared with care and presented as a feast for the eyes, too,” says Gareth.

As from March 1, they will be open daily and there will be a host of special events planned and coming soon will be International Women’s day, Mother’s Day, and Easter weekend.

Paolo stresses that the Saturday afternoon Brunch is going to be a key daytime event and the set menu is going to be in great demand.

“These are exciting times,” says Gareth. “We won’t be taking anything away from the Olivia’s which has always been a popular venue, but it will be even better.”

For your special event, whether it be a birthday, anniversary, or just a get-together with good friends in a stunning location, Olivia’s will ensure that you are taken care of and that you will leave with an unforgettable experience.

For more information visit their website: oliviaslacala.com.

And don’t leave things to chance. Make sure to reserve your experience making the team aware of any special requirements you might have, so that they can ensure everything is just as you want it. Olivia’s is committed to making every visit a lasting memory, and with Gareth and Paolo at the helm, you can be assured that you will not be disappointed. EASTER’S E

COMING !

ASTER traditions vary around the world and the EWN brings to you some of the stories behind Easter, the myths, the familiar figures, not forgetting the Christian roots of the festival. As we run up to the Easter celebrations in Spain we will bring you information on what is happening in your area. As with many festivals the roots go back further than Christianity alone.

THE world’s most expensive Easter eggs are not your ordinary chocolate treats but art treasures crafted by Russian goldsmith Peter Carl Fabergé.

Commissioned by Tsar Alexander III in 1885 as an extraordinary gift for his wife, these eggs became an annual tradition, persisting under his son Miklós II. The inaugural egg, fas-

Stations of the Cross

MANY of us expatriates here in Spain come from different traditions, especially when it comes to religion. You might have wondered what the significance is of the ritual of the Stations of the Cross. Also known as the way of the cross this is a Christian tradition commemorating the events of Good Friday. It represents the journey of Jesus Christ from his condemnation to his crucifixion and burial. The practice typically involves a series of 14 stations, each representing a significant event along this path. The stations are marked by images or statues and believers participate in devotional exercises. It’s traditional to walk from one station to the next while meditating on the biblical events. This devotional practice is especially common during the season of Lent, particularly on Fridays and during Holy Week. The ritual serves as a way for Christians to reflect on the passion and suffering of Jesus Christ and is practised to gain a deeper understanding of Christian faith. It’s common in Spain for chapels and local churches to be built at the summit of a hill, and often the stations of the cross are placed at intervals on the way to the top.

Opulent eggs

hioned from solid gold and adorned with white enamel, held a hen’s nest encrusted with rubies, crowned by a miniature replica of the tsar’s crown.

This set the stage for a series of more than 50 stunning eggs, with 43 preserved to this day.

The most renowned egg dazzles with over 3,000 diamonds, reflecting Fabergé’s dedication to perfection. Despite their rarity and value, Fabergé eggs are rarely sold.

In 2014, a forgotten egg surfaced in the cellar of a

country house, selling for a fraction of its true worth. Initially mistaken for a mere golden egg, it was later revealed as a Fabergé masterpiece worth £20m which saved it from the fate of being melted down for its gold.

In the works, Manarchy portrays models made up with silver spray paint and dresses them with gadgets from the private collection of fantastic objects of Steve Erenberg, known as ‘Radio Guy’. Objects he has collected for decades and which are medical oddities and industrial artefacts, objects always seen from an artist’s point of view rather than their functionality.

The ‘Metal’ series is exhibited with large-format images produced by the sublimation technique, some on metallic textile and others on Chromaluxe aluminium plate, which maximises the metallic sensation of the images captured by the artist.

Dining in Style

AGE CONCERN Fuengirola and Mijas (and now also Benalmadena) celebrated their second Gala Dinner in style at the stunning setting of The Green Label Restaurant. Whilst there is a heavy emphasis on the social activities of the organisation, it is much more than that. The Gala Dinner was to raise funds for their latest service development which is a ‘hospital to home’ programme. Michelle Greenwood, the secretary of the group explains that continuity of care and aftercare for people coming out of hospital is available, it is not always easy to access, or timely at the moment of need.

“Many elderly residents in Spain live on their own, and have very little in the way of family support locally.” What they plan to do is use the monies raised at these type of events to set up a service for people when they return after a hospital stay. When possible, they will do an assessment prior to a planned hospital admission to prepare for the return home. They already have a mobility equipment loan service which can provide aids when needed, but this new development will work alongside professional care providers to visit people in their homes. Michelle added, “We are also working in collaboration with the Lion’s Club who help to deliver heavy equipment to difficult locations. It’s an exciting new project, and we have got off to a great start thanks to those who attended the Gala dinner, and the myriad of businesses who sponsored raffles and fantastic items for the auction.”

Frozen pensions

IS it fair that numerous British expatriates have had their state pension payments frozen based on the country they have relocated to? This could affect half a million UK expats.

A debate about UK residents living abroad, highlighted a policy that impacts those who retire in certain countries, like Canada and New Zealand, by freezing their pension payments at the rate they were when they left the UK.

Recently, the UK Pensions Minister Paul Maynard addressed MPs, confirming the government’s decision to maintain the status quo.

An estimated 500,000 senior Britons are denied the full state pension benefits they would have received had they remained in the UK or retired in countries that are eligible for pension increases.

Roberts argued, “Following our withdrawal from the EU, we are rightly

able to move closer with our partners in the Commonwealth and one of the ways we can do that would be to confirm that all British citizens that live in the Commonwealth should be entitled to the appropriate uprating of their state pension as if they were still in the UK.

“Will the minister meet with me to discuss the practicalities of making that happen and restore some much-needed common sense to a needlessly complicated situation?

“According to the latest estimate, based on data from March 2022, uprating the state pension where we do not currently do so would cost about £0.9 billion a year if all UK state pensions in payment were increased to current UK levels.’

The issue has garnered public support, leading to the initiation of a parliamentary petition by Robert Lloyd Crutchlow, which reads: “We believe the freezing of UK citizens pensioners is discriminatory, unjust and immoral.”

BaroVire inspires Barona employees to spend time together

BARONA’S service centre in Fuengirola already has more than 350 employees, whose well-being is supported in many ways. The everyday life of the work community is made a little more relaxed by the recreation committee BaroVire, which moves, entertains, and unites Barona employees.

Hanna Padatsu, HR Manager at Barona’s service centre, is happy that BaroVire’s operations have continued to be active in Fuengirola for years. Along the way, there have been some nice pastimes, from culture to fitness. In addition to well-being at work, one of BaroVire’s most important tasks is to promote a sense of belonging and weld the work community stronger, Padatsu says.

Now, Padatsu is working closely with Administrative Coordinator Tiia Taipalus on BaroVire, who is planning and organising BaroVire activities as part of a seven-person team. Small-scale elected active groups aim to organise activities at least once a month.

“Our employees have their own BaroVire channel in Teams, where they can

express their own ideas and team member ideas” Taipalus says.

Comfortable with a low threshold

The service centre’s everyday life is enlivened in many ways - the office serves breakfast from Monday to Friday, and the aim is to take the calendar year into account while working. On Valentine’s Day, employees were able to craft cards for each other and enjoy heart doughnuts.

Tiia Taipalus points out that efforts

have also been made to make the threshold for participating in activities outside work low.

Various excursions and activities have proven to be a good way to familiarise the service centre staff with Spanish culture. BaroVire usually sponsors some of the related bus trips.

Padel or mountain hike - plenty of participants

According to Hanna Padatsu, among over 350 employees, there are always

Head of Service Centre, marianne.eliasson@barona.fi barona.fi/en

enthusiastic participants in all activities, whether it is paintball or a joint hike from the office to the nearby mountains.

“We have employees of all ages. Even though participation does not depend on age, we have strived to make BaroVire able to offer everyone something meaningful to do.

Sports opportunities for service centre employees are also provided once a week by two padel courts about one and a half kilometres from the service centre. A permanent game shift is free of charge for employees.

BaroVire activities receives praises

Hanna Padatsu says that for employees moving to Spain, the social network in the new country is often largely based on the work community, at least in the early stages.

Our employees and their well-being are the most important theme for us in our service centre and we hope that we can find ways to support them in work well-being and also in implementing Spanish culture, says Head of Service Centre, Marianne Eliasson.

Education on the Costa del Sol

LIVING on the Costa del Sol and enrolling your children in schools in this vibrant region offers a unique and enriching experience for both parents and youngsters. The Costa del Sol, situated along the southern coast of Spain, is renowned for its stunning beaches, diverse culture, and excellent quality of life. Choosing this picturesque location for your family provides numerous advantages, making it an appealing destination for expatriates.

First and foremost, the region boasts a Mediterranean climate, characterised by mild winters and long, sunny summers. This climate not only ensures a pleasant

and healthy lifestyle for your family but also allows for year-round outdoor activities. The abundance of outdoor spaces and recreational opportunities, combined with a strong sense of community, contributes to a wholesome upbringing for children.

The educational landscape on the Costa del Sol is equally compelling. International schools in the area offer a multicultural environment, fostering global perspectives and providing students with exposure to diverse cultures. These schools often follow internationally recognised curricula, ensuring a high standard of education that can seamlessly integrate

with academic systems in other countries. This is particularly beneficial for families with a global outlook or those planning to relocate in the future. In conclusion, living on the Costa del Sol and enrolling your children in local schools not only offers a picturesque setting and a favourable climate but also provides a multicultural and academically enriching experience.

The combination of natural beauty, a strong educational system, and a diverse community make the Costa del Sol an enticing choice for families seeking a well-rounded and fulfilling lifestyle.

Extremely excited

THE International School Estepona is extremely excited to announce an expansion of their infrastructure. This is due to the increasing demand, generated from the needs of new families arriving in the local community. The expansion involves a fabulous new area for the Early Years Foundation State 1; children aged two to three years old.

The International School Estepona was established in 2004 and is the educational home to just over 100 children from all over the world aged from two-12 years. It can be found in the area of El Paraiso.

The school was purpose built and is so different to what you see from other schools in the area. During the school’s most recent inspection by the British Council, ISE achieved the full years’ authorisation. The inspectors also commented, “how unusual it was to see a small school with such large gardens and sports facilities.”

The school provides a safe, inspiring, personalised and fun learning environment for international students to learn. This is reinforced by ensuring that class sizes remain small and tailored to each child’s needs.

The school is British and the primary school Maths and English curriculum, is based on the English National Curriculum and is designed

to provide the highest academy quality of education. Based on national statistics, most children educated in a British style are a year or more ahead. The National Curriculum is renowned worldwide and allows a child to move seamlessly between another British school whether here in Spain or around the world. All other subjects are taught through themed units of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC).

In the Early Years Foundation Stage, we seek to create a safe, caring and happy environment, where a child believes that they are capable of anything. Our EYFS curriculum is designed to allow each child discover interests and talents as well as equip them to become life-long learners.

The EYFS curriculum is organised into seven areas of learning and development; Personal, Social and Emotional Development, Communication and Language, Mathematical Development, Understanding the World, Physical Development, Expressive Arts and Design and Literacy Development.

Spanish schools are governed by the ‘Ministerio de Educacion y Formacion Profesional’ (Ministry of Education and Vocational Training) and work closely with the autonomous communities.

SPAIN has a strong education system. Scoring 491 in mathematics, reading literacy, and science, Spain ranks over the average of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Spanish students spend almost 18 years in education, surpassing the OECD average of just over 17 years. Children are admitted into schools once a year (September), according to the calendar year of their birth.

This means that children born in January are the oldest in their class, and children born between October and December will start school before their third birthday. The registration period for all

There are three types of school in Spain; state schools (‘colegios publicos’), semi-private schools (‘colegios concertados’), and private schools (‘colegios privados’). State schools have no tuition fees. Part of the tuition for ‘colegios concertados’ is subsidised by the government and the family cover the rest. Private schools (including international schools) have full tuition fees.

The local communities are responsible for much of the day-to-day running of schools, including the allocation of funding, steering the curriculum, and managing education standards across local schools.

EDUCATION SYSTEM: Is divided into four stages in Spain.

- Primary school

- Compulsory secondary school (‘educacion secundaria obligatoria’) - 12 to 16 years. The system is modelled on the British comprehensive system.

- University preparation (‘Bachillerato’) or vocational training (‘formacion professional’) - 15 to 18 years. There are four types of Bachillerato - Arts, humanities, natural and health sciences and technology.

In primary school, homework is at the discretion of the class teacher, but can be assigned to children from the first year of primary school onwards. It is usually assumed that parents will be involved in helping their children with their homework, although some hire tutors if their child is struggling.

At secondary school there is usually quite a heavy load of homework as well as studying for exams which require considerable sacrifice and self-discipline on the part of students who want to do well at school.

UK-Spain education cooperation

DESPITE the many changes ushered in after Brexit, both the UK and Spanish authorities have continued to work together, with the hope of further expansion in the UK-Spain bilateral relationship .

In July 2023, a significant educational partnership was forged between the UK and Spain. This collaboration was marked by the signing of a

bilateral agreement in education and higher education access, involving key figures from both nations in a ceremony that underscored their mutual commitment to strengthening academic ties. The event took place with Hugh Elliott, the British Ambassador to Spain, and Spanish officials Pilar Alegria, Minister of Education and Vocational Training, and Joan Subirats, Minister of Universities, leading the charge. The agreement came into effect on August 2, 2023, the accord has opened new avenues for students by simplifying the university admission process between borders.

Streamlining access to education

According to the press report: “This agreement enables students with UK qualifications (including A-levels and equivalents) to access universities in Spain without the need for the Spanish general university entrance exam. Additional entry requirements will only be necessary for certain competitive courses, as was the case prior to the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. Students from the Spanish education system are able to continue to access UK universities and other higher education institutions with additional legal certainty.” It symbolises the shared vision to nurture and expand upon the robust educational framework that has linked the UK and Spain for years, ensuring a bilateral flow of academic talent.

A future of collaborative learning

As this agreement takes root, the anticipation for a strengthened UK-Spain educational relationship grows. The collective effort underscores a broader objective of promoting cross-cultural understanding and academic excellence, reinforcing the importance of international collaboration.

PARTS of Spain have already taken the first steps to ban or at least limit the use of mobile phones in school. A good thing, or a bad thing? Some have pointed out the benefits of using this type of technology: built in calculator, note book, reference devised for internet use, and of course there is simply the opportunity to access help in the case of an emergency, and for parents to contact their children. Neuropychologists who have looked into this suggest that children should have limited access to mobile devices while they are in their early years and while cognitive functioning is still developing. They say that mobile devices are designed to captivate attention rather than facilitate learning.

Should the use of computers, including mobile devices, be limited to subjects that focus on computing skills, whether that be research, or use of applications? Some of us would be lost without our Excel spreadsheets in our daily life, but so were the 1960’s children without their slide rule.

Life moves on whether we like it or not, but going all digital may have unexpected negative consequences if not carefully thought through. Alma Forest School | Where research meets practice!

ALMA Forest School, referred to in its community as ‘Alma’, is an internationally accredited school based in Sotogrande providing a progressive learning environment for students from three years old to 14 years old. The school is currently gaining widespread popularity in Europe, recently being featured in the Financial Times and La Vanguardia for its innovative learning approach. As parents and educators increasingly recognise the limitations of the traditional education system, there is a growing demand for alternatives that prioritise the wellbeing and whole-brain development of children. Alma’s approach to childhood education offers a compelling vision for the future.

Philipp Klaus, the Principal of Alma elaborates on their approach: At Alma, we consider each child to be on their own, unique, learning journey with a curriculum that embraces their individuality and supports their learning through a robust academic curriculum. The foremost priority is nurturing

intrinsic motivation within our students. We firmly believe that when a child’s innate curiosity is kindled, it paves the way for meaningful learning experiences that can foster a lifelong passion for education.

The founder of Alma considered not only on its unique curriculum but also the design of the school space, which has been built in a way to encourage and support students to be creative, take risks, ask the big questions and feel empowered to problemsolve.

The founder, Sharyn McFarlane, says: “The benefit of building a school from scratch meant that we were able to consider all the current research on how children learn and how their brains’ develop and meet that research with a school and curriculum designed accordingly. Typically, such research takes 20-30 years to enter the mainstream system but as a parent, I did not have that sort of time to wait. So, we set about building a school that

Changing schools

SOMETIMES changing schools is necessary, for instance, if you move to another location or the current school does not suit your child. In Spain, a child can move to another school at any point in the academic year, but in some areas school places are at a premium, so changing may need to be well planned and done for the beginning of a new academic term or year.

Changing to a new school follows a similar process to enrolment. If you’re relocating, you

may be required to provide the new school with proof of your new address or other documentation from the previous school. When relocating to a different autonomous community, it’s important to contact the education department in your new area to understand what documentation is required. This varies among communities.

Try to keep any hurdles to a minimum. Especially important for those who are relocating, keep the school calendar in mind

such as starting dates. If your child is moving from a public school to a private school, you will need to consider things such as students not going home to have their lunch. Private schools have a shorter break and more hours in the classroom so it is vital to consider how these sorts of changes my affect your child. If switching from public to private, you might want to reduce the hours of extra-curricular activities due to longer classroom hours.

Remember that many private schools have waiting lists so forward planning is essential. Before changing to a state school, you first need to register your new address on the town hall Register (Padrón) Then, you must visit the Education Department at the local town hall to obtain a school registration form. You must also provide a medical certificate that gives a full medical history for each child.

About Queens

QBGS is a relatively new school in Spain and opened its doors to students in September 2016. In eight years, it has earned a reputation for excellence in academic delivery and a commitment to a pupil-focused approach. With its growth in popularity, the school has increased in student numbers and last September, the school moved to its own privately owned building; its own secure grounds with a swimming pool, and excellent outdoor and sporting facilities.

facilities including four computer rooms, a multimedia lab and a graphic design room, as well as the latest technological devices (iPads, Chromebooks and interactive whiteboards). Innovative science labs to support the science curriculum through to A-Levels and dedicated rooms for drama, food technology labs and a new radio studio. We have a large 200-seat dining hall with its own kitchen where school meals are prepared and an extensive library to encourage our pupils to develop an interest in reading and research.

We offer a unique and incredible educational experience to each one of our students, which we call ‘Amazing Learning’: having the ability to improve day by day, and be amazed at everything learned, whatever the starting point was. We work so that the student feels happy and motivated in an environment that generates confidence. “What I most like about Laude is our school community. Friendly staff is one of the most dominant things at Laude. Our children are physically safe from a safeguarding perspective and well looked after for their well-being. We really encourage students to be vocal and speak their mind, which also leads to a sort of personal safety of mind. We have happy kids in our school. I think that’s partly due to our community demanding that

we offer a balanced, holistic education for children, rather than a driven, purely academic one.

“We all want our students to have broader skills, to be content, to be challenged, not just simply get the exam results. We’re just beginning some work on something called global life competencies.

“So as well as getting a grade for language, maths and science you get feedback on your ability to research or your ability to manage your time or your ability to be creative. This is really exciting stuff to me.”

Enjoying sport

ONE of the great advantages for children living on the Costa del Sol is the weather which in turn allows them to enjoy sports in all of its forms.

Schools do encourage competitive sports and local councils provide a great selection of public facilities plus there are also numerous clubs that welcome youngsters of all ages. Apart from sports played outside such as athletics, basketball, football, golf, netball, rugby, tennis and even cricket, there are indoor facilities such a swimming pools, gymnasiums where the practice of martial arts is very popular and much more with some suggesting that dance should also be considered a sport.

No matter what your child’s interest may be, even if it’s as cerebral as chess then there is bound to be a club or facility either in their school or relatively nearby. So many parents complain about their child’s obsession with social media and virtual games but to a great extent it is their fault for not enforcing rules which require the youngster to put down the phone, take off the pods and actually get out and enjoy exercise with their friends.

Not everyone is going to be the next Nadal or Messi and it is important that parents don’t try to live their sporting past though their children but with encouragement coupled with advice from their school, there is no doubt that they can enjoy a healthy and productive sporting life.

Equally, as children grow, they have to be careful not to over extend themselves or to become too obsessed with their chosen sport and that’s where parental guidance is so very important.

Welcome to the Swedish International School

THE Swedish International School situated between Estepona town centre and San Pedro Alcantara, a suburb of Marbella offers students a Swedish education but with the added bonus of Spanish elements. The school prides itself on the fact that its students aged from two to 18 benefit from the latest technology which assists them in their learning process and by keeping classes to a maximum of 16 (15 in the kindergarten), each child can be

assured of the ongoing attention of a qualified teacher. SIS offers a safe and comfortable environment for all students no matter what age they may be or indeed their level of achievement. As the school was only opened in 2023, everything, including the concept behind the schooling is new and up to date. Whether a family is in Spain because one of the parents is on a set time contract or if the family has made the decision to settle in Spain, the intention is to prepare all of the children in a way which would ensure that they could easily fit back into school or college if they return to Sweden or other country.

But it’s not all about Sweden as those attending will be helped to settle into Spain and the Spanish way of life rather than them feeling completely out of place if they went straight to a Spanish school.English which is still a very useful language almost everywhere in the world is also part of the curriculum with the aim of helping each student achieve as much as possible.

Another really important feature of the curriculum is that as children get older and work perhaps becomes more complicated, there is a special house within the campus where they have access to remote teaching via computers with qualified teachers specialising in individual topics such

as mathematics who are based in Sweden thus expanding the quality and variety of teaching. Unlike some schools of old, the ethic here is to include both children and parents in much of the decision making and the students are encouraged to share their thoughts in a number of areas and as well as parents evenings, because the school is relatively small, Principal Goran Holm welcomes parents at the school gates, especially in the case of those attending the kindergarten. Sport, healthy eating and focused activity is an important part of attending the Swedish International School and one of the teachers is actually a professional basketball player.

All nationalities are welcome to enrol at the school and currently there is a real mix in the kindergarten but as the emphasis is on the Swedish curriculum, older students may not find this appropriate.

Visit sweintschool.com to find out more about the Swedish International School and parents who think that this may be the ideal option for their child are advised to complete a short online expression of interest.

IN the heart of Mijas, a revolution in education is unfolding at Shine International Academy. With a pledge to ‘Reach Higher, See Further, Shine Brighter’, this British International School is setting a new standard

for educational excellence, offering an innovative learning environment distinctly different from traditional schooling methods. At Shine, we believe education is not just about acquiring knowledge but engaging hearts and equipping minds for the challenges of tomorrow. Our approach is rooted in the latest educational thinking, where Project Based Learning and physical movement intertwine to forge not only academically proficient but holistically developed individuals.

What sets us apart? It’s our profound understanding that the conventional classroom setting may not cater to the diverse needs of today’s youth. Hence, we’ve adopted methodologies that ensure our teaching practices are as forward-thinking as our curriculum. Our educators are deeply committed to their professional growth, ensuring that their impact resonates beyond the classroom walls.

In essence, Shine is a community where each student is acknowledged, understood, and valued. Learning here is tailored, making it relevant, challenging, and, importantly,

enjoyable. Education transcends the traditional spaces - it happens in classrooms, gardens, patios, parks, beaches, and even during the simple, everyday moments like the journey to school or dinner conversations at home. Central to our philosophy is the concept of a Growth Mindset. We diligently nurture and practise strategies that strengthen both mind and body. Inclusivity is at our core, welcoming every child into the Shine family, fostering a sense of belonging and contribution to our vibrant, multicultural community.

For parents, Shine offers a unique promise: a collaborative approach to your child’s education, ensuring that as a family, you’re integral to the journey of reaching higher, seeing further, and shining brighter.

We invite you to join us in this educational adventure. Contact Shine International Academy today to schedule your visit and witness firsthand how we’re transforming the future, one child at a time.

Naughty nibbles

PUPPY mouthing is a natural behavior where puppies nibble on hands and objects as part of their exploration and play. It’s crucial for pet owners to address this behaviour early on to prevent future issues, understanding that it’s not aggression but a learning phase.

Puppies learn bite inhibition from their interactions with littermates, a lesson that owners must continue through positive reinforcement. Redirecting their mouthing towards appropriate chew toys instead of hands or household items teaches them acceptable behaviour.

A fi rm ‘no’ or a yelp when bitten too hard, followed by a brief period of ignoring the puppy, can effectively communicate

the consequences of rough play, mimicking the feedback they would receive from their littermates. This helps puppies understand the limits of play and the strength of their bite.

Consistent training and providing plenty

of chew toys are key to guiding your puppy through this phase. Early and positive training methods are essential for developing a well-behaved adult dog, ensuring a lasting and harmonious bond between pet and owner.

Electric: Pros and cons

THE debate surrounding the future of transportation often centres on electric vehicles (EVs).

As the world grapples with climate change and seeks sustainable solutions, electric cars are frequently presented as a beacon of hope. Notably, Spain lags behind its European counterparts, with disappointing sales figures. Statistics show the electrified vehicle market share at just 12 per cent of new car sales. However, there are valid arguments on both sides. Euro Weekly News looks at the reasons why electric cars could be the way forward and their drawbacks.

The most compelling argument for electric cars is their potential to reduce carbon emissions.

Electric cars are generally cheaper to operate than their gasoline-powered counterparts. Electricity, especially from renewable sources, can be less expensive than petrol, and

electric motors are more efficient and have fewer moving parts, leading to lower maintenance costs.

The push for electric vehicles drives technological advancements in battery storage, energy efficiency, and renewable energy integration, contributing to broader applications beyond transportation.

The environmental benefits of electric cars are somewhat offset by the energy-intensive and polluting processes involved in battery production and disposal.

Mining for lithium, cobalt, and nickel has significant

environmental and ethical concerns, and the recycling of batteries is not yet fully sustainable.

EVs shift the source of pollution from exhaust pipes to power plants. In regions where electricity is primarily generated from coal or natural gas, the environmental benefits are diminished.

Despite lower operating costs, the upfront price of electric cars is typically higher than conventional vehicles.

The future of electric cars hinges on addressing these challenges while capitalising on their benefits.

Ferrari F1 car unveiled

FERRARI has become the latest team to launch their 2024 F1 car, with the covers being pulled off the SF-24. After teasing fans with footage of their new challenger being fired up for the first time at Maranello recently, the car has now been revealed to the world ahead of the upcoming season.

is the first studied, designed and built entirely under the management of Frederic Vasseur, who inherited Mattia Binotto’s job a year ago.

It is a car that follows the 2023 Ferrari however, the team say it is a radically different car, with most of the secrets under the bodywork. The aim is-

“Ferrari is my life, I love this team and I will do everything to make them win the World Championship. Seeing the new single-seater is always a unique feeling after all the work done during the year,” said Charles Leclerc.

Malaga on song!

AWFL Over 50s League

AC Benahavis 2 v 13 MalagaWFC

This match saw the hosts put to the sword by an on-form Malaga side! Unfortunately, Benahavis fielded a team hit by injury and absence and this coincided with an on-song visiting team, playing at the very height of their game! Benahavis were two down after five minutes and the goals kept coming to leave the hosts 6-0 down by half time.

vability, which had been oneblems the drivers

Carlos Sainz said: “Mine is not a normal situation to start the season, but the moment I put the helmet on I only feel the desire to go as fast as possible. Seeing the SF24 is very special.”

A reshuffle saw them briefly threaten to make a comeback at the start of the second half; however, Malaga got back into their stride and freely scored seven more, Benahavis at least managing two consolation goals from James Quinn and Shane McAllister. Scorers for Malaga were Fran (5), Pedrin (4), Mark Coleman (3) and Andreas.

the second an absolute beauty! This set the pace for the rest of the match, with Steve Reynolds and Mark Sargent from the penalty spot both contributing and sealing the points for the visitors.

The Women’s Game!

AWFL Over 60s League

Sporting Benahavis 2 v 6 Malaga WFC

The public had already gathered from early morning on the Fiorano bridge, waiting for the new red car to be christened on the track but the real test will be on March 2 in the first of the 24 Grand Prix of the 2024 Formula 1 championship.

A defeat for Sporting which was closer than the score might suggest! The first half was fairly even with Malaga going ahead through Gary Seymour and Bryan Richmond but being pegged back by a fine brace from Bill Keep. Terry Norringham came on for Malaga at the start of the second half and found the net twice in quick succession,

To emphasise the fact that the ladies’ game is very much alive, Competa Chicas recently organised and featured in a mini-tournament against Benalmadena Ladies, Iberas Sevilla and Felines United (Vinuela/UK).

The resulting final took place between the home team and Iberas Sevilla, the visitors leading 2-0 at half time and Competa drawing level by the end, leading to penalties. Sevilla walked out 5-4 winners with Competa second and Felines and Benalmadena third and fourth respectively. Walk on ladies!
