International Fair in Fuengirola

THE Feria de los Pueblos (International Countries Fair) will once again project Fuengirola as the world capital of multiculturalism from May 1 to 5. The town will host the celebration of this well-established event, which will be attended by 33 nations in the stalls of the Fairgrounds, and which is in its 28th edition. In 1994, the year the Feria de los Pueblos began, there were just just eight countries represented.

Among the different activities planned, the FIP parade will be held this year on the first day of the fair, with more than 1,000 participants, starting from the Plaza de España.

Councillor for Tourism, José Luis Ponce, announced the details of the event and said that, “This fair is nothing more than a reflection of what Fuengirola is. A town that does not renounce its identity, that feels Spanish and Andalucian, but that is open to the world, hosting 130 different nationalities, and that, during these five days, this openness to the world is reflected in the fairgrounds and in the healthy, peaceful and fruitful coexis-

tence that these different nationalities have in our town.” In relation to the 33 countries that will participate in the IFP 2024 this year, Ponce pointed out that, “with respect to last year’s participants, this year Italy, Lebanon, Senegal and Sweden have joined. In addition, as a new feature this year, the traditional parade, which will have more than 1,000 participants, will be held on May 1 and will serve as the opening of the fair. It will start in the morning, at around 11.30am, and the route will be the same as in previous years, starting from the Plaza de España and ending at the fairgrounds.”

EASTER’S COMING!

IN Poland, Easter follows the Gregorian Catholic calendar. It’s on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring. While it’s a Christian holiday, some of the customs have roots in ancient pagan beliefs.

Nowadays, both modern and traditional families in Poland celebrate Easter, regardless of their religious views. People start getting ready for Easter by bringing twigs and dried flowers to church. The Sunday before Easter, Palm Sunday, marks Jesus’s entry into Jerusalem. Since palm trees aren’t common in Poland, people bring willow branches or home-made ‘palms’ decorated with ribbons and flowers. On Easter Saturday, people paint boiled eggs, called pisanki. Some use kits,

E aster in P oland

while others stick to the old way of using onion skins. This tradition goes back thousands of years and is seen in many Slavic countries.

Holy Saturday is also when Easter baskets are prepared. They’re lined with a white cloth and filled with Easter essentials: eggs, sausage or ham, salt, pepper, horseradish, bread, babka (a type of cake), and a lamb-shaped sugar or plastic figure. The basket is then taken to church to be blessed. On Easter Sunday, most Poles attend an early morning church service, including a special mass and procession. Afterwards, families come together for Easter breakfast. Before eating, they share a piece of consecrated egg and wish each other a Happy Easter, similar to sharing the Christmas wafer. The breakfast spread is full of cold dishes, perfect for meat lovers: ham, sausage, roast meats, pate, eggs, horseradish, and bread.

British Art

PICASSO remains the 20th century’s single most important artistic figure, a towering genius who changed the face of modern art. His influence on modern British Art is undoubtable, artists like Wyndham Lewis, Ben Nicholson, Henry Moore, Graham Sutherland, Francis Bacon and David Hockney have all been indebted to the works of Picasso.

Each one of these artists had an epiphany moment when confronted by Picasso’s work. Throughout the 20th century the shape-shifting Spanish artist had an enduring influence on these major British artists. We can see how each artist took from and then adapted Picasso’s work, to create their own unique versions of Modern British Art.

On Tuesday April 30, Art Historian Paul Chapman is giving a talk on ‘Picasso and Modern British Art’ at the Centro Cultural Padre Manuel in Estepona. Paul is a National Gallery trained guide with many years of experience working in education. As a freelance Paul delivers courses and lectures for a wide range of educational organisations. Paul has also given talks and tours for art associations/societies in Museums and Galleries in the UK and Europe.

Lectures are free of charge to members of The Arts Society Al Andalus, guests are very welcome at €15 and members of ACM and affiliated Arts Societies, €10. For more information check out the website: theartssocietybena havis.com.
