The date for this event is Saturday April 27, and the opening hours will be from 10am until 3pm. The market will take place in Calle Lagasca, Calle Marqués del Duero and Calle Córdoba in San Pedro Alcantara, providing a delightful setting for this commu-

ON Tuesday April 9 at 10.30am, The Arts Society is holding an illustrated talk by Cindy Palomis at The Danish Club in Mijas. Admission is €8 for members and members from other Arts Societies and nonmembers is €10.

The Arts Society Costa del Sol was established in 1988, part of a global network of local Societies and the first of its kind in Spain. Their illustrated art lectures run from October to May, covering a wide variety of artistic and cultural interests. During the lecture season they

offer their members many opportunities to socialise at after lecture drinks and dinners.

On this occasion, the lecture will be looking at portraiture. From the ancient world to artists like Tracey Emin and Lucien Freud, portraits have been used to show power, status, virtue, beauty, wealth and taste. The lecture will look at how portraiture has changed throughout the ages and how the genre shows us how to communicate with the past and present in exciting ways.

Cindy Polemis is an art historian, independent

lecturer and art guide. She has a BA in Modern History from Oxford University. She spent many years as a radio producer and presenter for the BBC World Service working in news and current affairs. Since 2016 Cindy has worked as an official art guide at Tate Britain and Tate Modern.

She is particularly keen to draw parallels with art and social history and her lectures are accessible and engaging, drawing out the stories of art and artists which are steeped in human emotions and experiences which we all share.

The Great Trolls’ Party

KNOWN for their crazy coloured hair, the Trolls are the happiest creatures in the world with their catchy songs and flashy dances. But their fantastic world is turned upside down when ‘the depres’, the saddest and most negative beings, burst into their new village to trap them and end the magic. Can you help them? Get your tickets for this great show at Marbella Congress Centre on Saturday

April 6 at 6.30pm and you can help rescue the trolls.

Trolls have their roots in Norse mythology and, in 2023, what they call the world’s first and only research station for the species of trolls opened in Rindal in Norway. “We don’t know exactly when or where it started, however you will find them in our narrative tradition, and you can find them in our first written sources, sagas, from the Middle Ages. We don’t know how

old they are in people’s imaginations, but it’s old,” says Ane Ohrvik, professor of cultural history and museology at the University of Oslo. Trolls got a makeover in 2013 thanks to the movie by Dream Works. The animated movie voiced by Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick became a huge hit among kids all over and reintroduced a new generation to the wacky creatures with that iconic multicoloured tall hair that we all know and love. For tickets and more information go to the website: marbellacongresos.com.

European Craft Days

MIJAS is celebrating European craftwork from April 4 to 6 when more than a dozen craftsmen and women will show their work in a marquee set up in the Plaza Virgen de la Peña which will be open from 10am to 2pm each day.

For three days visitors to Mijas will have the opportunity to get to know the work of the artisans of the town. Among other handmade creations, there will be jewellery, painting, fashion, silverware, engravings, saddlery, stained glass and tile painting.

“In Mijas, as an area, we have a very high number of craftsmen and craftswomen who have participated every year, but this time the town hall is giving us its support and providing us with a marquee to publicise and promote local crafts,” explained Sonia Lekuona, president of the Mijas Craft

Association. Councillor for Culture, Commerce and Tourism Promotion, Juan Carlos Maldonado, said that, “in Mijas this day is special because of the importance of the association, what it does and, above all, the commercial and cultural expression that it represents.” The mayor said that this, “is the only craft association that remains in Malaga Province, which shows that the interest in crafts in Mijas is very high and is why we have made the space available.”

The Mijas Craft Association already has more than 30 members from more than 20 different trades. “There are 33 of us and we now cover the whole province,” Lekuona said. “We have to take advantage of the window we have to the world with tourism to preserve this tradition through craftsmanship,” added councillor for Tourism, Juan Carlos Cuevas Dawson.

ESTEPONA’S mayor, José María García Urbano, has launched an initiative called ‘Sharing Cultures’, which will be held throughout the year and will allow foreign residents to get to know each other’s customs, traditions and gastronomic culture.

Foreign residents currently represent a third of Estepona’s population, with more than 120 different nationalities.

‘Sharing Cultures’, which will run throughout the year, starting on Saturday April 20, with the traditional Foreign Residents’ Day, a festival which has been celebrated in the municipality for more than 20 years and in which more than 20 stands from all countries take part. Those interested in attending the event can request information at

Sharing cultures

estepona@estepona.es

Other events scheduled for this year are the Day of Celebration of Italian Culture (Festa della Republica), on June 2 and the Day of France, on July 14. During the second half of September, a Spanish-Moroccan Day will be celebrated and, on Saturday October 19, one of the most internationally recognised festivals, the October Fest and Germany Day, which commemorates

(on October 3) the reunification of Germany in 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Also in October is the Scandinavian Festival, dedicated to the citizens of Norway, Finland, Sweden and Denmark. The final months of the year will see UK Day on November 11, commemorating the end of the First World War and paying tribute to the soldiers of the armed forces, and Romania Day on December 1.

WITH spring just around the corner, it’s time for the ARCH Spring Fest 2024 at the organisation’s shelter in Alhaurin El Grande on Sunday April 14 from 10am.

Those who have been before will know what a great day out it is. They have a fantastic Dog Show with Sabrina Hope supported by local judges, and Lee Jay the DJ. The wonderful ambiance of live music provided by Jens Malling and other guest artists will provide the background to the activities.

The now-famous ARCH barbecue will keep your stomachs full and the cold drinks will keep you refreshed until it’s time for the legendary raffle. Add all of this to the backdrop of a bright array of delightful market stalls and you have a day to remember. And all for a worthy cause!

ARCH (The Andalucian Rescue Centre for

ARCH Spring Fest

Horses) has transformed the lives of countless horses, ponies and donkeys since it was founded in 2009. Their mission is to rescue animals which have been abused, neglected, or abandoned. All of this is costly and they rely heavily on donations to cover the costs of rescuing and transporting animals to the Centre, giving them veterinary care and proper feeding in rehabilitation, and helping meet the

legal costs involved in prosecuting abusive owners. The centre could not exist without your support so this event is a great way to get involved. For the Dog show, registration is at 10am, the first Dog Class will follow at 10.45am and the show will finish at 1pm. The live music will start at 1.30pm and the raffle will take place at 2.30pm.
