FUENGIROLA is celebrating the 13th Dog Day at the Sohail Castle on Sunday April 21. The day will start at 10am in the Plaza de España, where a canine walk to the Castle will begin.
The mayor of Fuengirola, Ana Mula said, “we will be able to enjoy another year of celebrating Dog Day, outdoors in a fantastic setting of the Sohail Castle. We want it to be a day of conviviality in Fuengirola, since we are an animal friendly town where we promote the coexistence between citizens and pets.”
At the start of the day, participants will all be given gifts for their pets and the walk will run from Plaza de España, along the Paseo Marítimo, to the Parque del Castillo, where the marquees will house the different associations and businesses that collaborate with the event.
Mula announced that this year, apart from the exhibitions, parades, raffles and adoptions, there will be a National Canine Competition valid for the Andalucian Championship, organised by the Canine Society of the Costa del Sol. “This is a new activity that is being set up with the aim of promoting not only health and beauty in dog breeds but also working dogs,” explained the mayor. The Canine Society will also be putting on an exhibition of Andalucian dogs and will be organising a ‘Social Dog’ test, with completely free registration on the day of the competition, aimed at owners of dogs in the town who want to see if their pets pass three very simple tests: an anatomy test, a health test and a sociability test. If they manage to pass
the tests, they will be given a diploma and a medal for their dog. The Special Unit of Canine Guides of the National Police of Malaga will showcase the work carried out by their dogs and the Animal Domus shelter will have a stand with dogs up for adoption throughout the event.

Torremolinos lunch club
A GROUP of expats started the club back in 2017. The group started with four members meeting for lunch usually on Mondays and from then on Wayne Ward and Lisa Ward have organised the weekly venues for food and refreshments.
The first initial meetings were in the El Calvario, Torremolinos in a bar called Los Ridos which for around eight months they met there every week to eat the amazing Sri Lankan food created by Mahesh and Rafael making various different Sri Lankan dishes weekly. The group started growing fast, moving fast from four to around 16 sometimes 20 members.
They have new members join most weeks as they have seen the group on social media and love the look of the club: they have people from UK, Scotland and Ireland, plus visitors from Sweden, America, Australia and Canada.
The group is free and meet in various restaurants in and around Torremolinos. They currently have between 10 and 30 international diners each week, they try all cuisines and keep notes on the places that they have been well looked after and enjoyed for return visits so, if you are interested in joining you can get in touch through the club’s Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/torre molinoslunchclub.

Mijas on horseback
ON Saturday April 20 the traditional equestrian route through the Sierra de Mijas will take place, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. For this special day, Mijas Town Hall has organised a carefully planned circular route which will start at 9am from El Esparragal and finish at the same point at around 3pm.
Mijas councillor, Eloy Belmonte, who launched the event, spoke enthusiastically about the natural environment of Mijas, especially the Sierra de Mijas and said that meetings like this, “engender respect, care and love for animals, and promote awareness for a habitat as rich and sensitive as the Sierra de Mijas.” Those interested in participating can register by calling 670 066 075 or 635 976 703.
The route will end with lunch and a race in
which children and adults can participate. In previous years, almost 100 riders have taken part, so the organisers are confident that this year’s event will be a success.

Mijas is one of the municipalities in Spain with the largest number of horses, proof of this is the route along the beach which took place in February and which was a total success with 325 horses taking part as well as horse-drawn carriages, the highest attendance rate ever recorded.

Hard Rock Hotel
Marbella’s home of the stars
SITUATED in one of the most popular parts of Marbella which has just been voted the best European destination of 2024, the Hard Rock Hotel is an icon of entertainment.
Most people under the age of 45 (and many above) already know the Hard Rock concept which offers a combination of fun and relaxation surrounded by an enormous selection of curated memorabilia from some of music’s greatest artists.
Sounds as if it’s only for the young, rich and famous, but this is so far from the truth especially if you consider taking advantage of pre-Summer offers which run for another month up until May 20. One of the great things about life in Marbella is that it has its own micro climate so generally speaking
the weather is clement during autumn and winter and the hotel is able to welcome groups of people with a common interest.
There are restaurants and bars both inside and out offering a wide selection of highest quality food and drink, always with the guarantee of a soundtrack of rock’s greatest hits.
There’s live music, an incredible Spa where you can enjoy the Hard Rock signature treatments which not only pamper your body but also feed your mind with tasty hot tunes - As Shakespeare said “If music be the food of love, play on” and this is the place to live that life.
There is so much to see and do on the Costa del Sol and the experts at the Front Desk will be more than happy to organise a range of tours, help golfers to reserve greens and so much more, including a conducted tour of all of the music memorabilia in the hotel.
It’s not just adults who enjoy music and now, Hard Rock Hotel Marbella (situated in trendy Nueva Andalucia with Puerto Banus genuinely nearby) welcomes children in all of its areas so that the whole family can enjoy the special vibe that only Hard Rock Hotels can give.
If you want pools, then there are two to welcome you and if you book to stay in one of the hotel’s 383 rooms and suites this summer then get ready for four mega pool parties with big name DJs to be

Playhouse theatre
SALVA presents an evening of comedy theatre with two superb one-act plays at The Salon Varieties Theatre in Fuengirola from Wednesday April 24 to Sunday April 28.
Heroes is a play by Gerald Sibleyras and adapted for the stage by Tom Stoppard. Winner of the Laurence Olivier Best New Comedy award, in Tom Stoppard’s hilarious and poignant translation of Gérald Sibleyras’ Heroes, we meet three First World War veterans who pass their monotonous filled days in a military hospital by engaging in verbal battles of long-forgotten military campaig grumblings about the staff, and reflections on their lives.
Henri is afflicted by a gammy leg, Gustave suffers from agoraphobia, and Philippe passes out because of a piece of shrapnel lodged in his brain. Their cantankerous camaraderie becomes strained when Gustave conjures up an escape plan.
Looking over the cemetery to the poplars beyond, they dream of freedom.
This will be followed by Theatrical Digs by Jean Mcconnell, a farcical battle of wits, work, agents and mobile phones between a glamorous, conceited actress and an eccentric older performer.
We listen in on two women who meet on a seafront. Their uneasy conversation unfolds with each expressing personal perceptions of their own individual careers, but will they be able to overcome their rivalry to become friends?
Performances are nightly at 7.30pm and Sunday at 7pm with tickets available from the Salon Varieties Theatre website or at the box office.

El Cortijo de Ramiro - an elegant option
IN today’s modern fast paced world, where chains of restaurants follow cooking instructions from an external chef, it’s a pleasure to find an oasis of elegance and top quality food.
For those of us old enough to remember ‘It’s a Family Affair’, the song by Sly and the Family Stone, describes everything that is so good about El Cortijo de Ramiro. Ramiro Gago is a perfect example of a charming host who welcomes each of his customers as if they are guests at his home and he is backed up by his wife who is the head chef, his daughter and other members of the family, all of whom are dedicated to making a visit to the restaurant a real experience.
Marbella,” “Excellent welcome, service, cuisine and friendliness. Elegant terrace,” “We chose this site based on the opinions of this app and they were not wrong. Incredible place for the location.” Ramiro left Asturias in northwest Spain when he was just 16 and went to catering school before working at top restaurants in Marbella as a chef and in 1984 opened his first restaurant, but soon discovered that although he was inherently shy, the most important thing in catering is that the “customer comes first.”
This meant that he migrated from the kitchen to front of house and that’s where he has stayed ever since, opening a number of restaurants as well as a catering business but eventually he decided that life needs to be enjoyed to the full so divested himself of most of the empire so that he could concentrate on El Cortijo de Ramiro. It’s now an elegant restaurant in the very exclusive Guadalmina Baja area, easy to get to and importantly with plenty of parking as well as being just a six-minute walk from the nearby Guadalmina Hotel.
that the staff can speak a number of European languages) is open Tuesday to Saturday from 6.30pm to 11.30pm and it is always recommended that you call 952 888 077 or visit the website https://www.elcortijoderamiro.es/ to make a reservation.
If you are thinking of holding a celebration or function, then there is a marquee in the extensive grounds which can hold up to 350 people and when such a function is taking place then an overflow car park will be made available.
It clearly works, as TripAdvisor rates it number two out of 165 restaurants in San Pedro Alcantara and comments from guests include “Without a doubt one of the best places to eat in
It’s a bright and popular restaurant which offers a range of top quality Spanish and international dishes and there is a large terrace which opens in the summer. Many guests enjoy music as they dine and El Cortijo de Ramiro does have live musicians playing discreetly but at a level that allows for conversation.
The restaurant which attracts a number of visitors from Scandinavia, Belgium and Holland (happy

EVER wondered where Santa Claus retreats for a well-deserved holiday? This year, the jolly figurehead, Seamus Tobin, traded Lapland’s snowscapes for Fuengirola’s sunny shores.
Hailing from Limerick, Seamus has epitomized Christmas’s spirit through Cantebury Travel’s Lapland excursions. Fuengirola, nestled on the Costa del Sol, may seem an unlikely locale for Santa’s respite.
Yet, its blend of tradition and novelty lured Seamus. Amidst palm
trees and Mediterranean breezes, Santa found solace.
But Santa’s Fuengirola vacation isn’t all sun-soaked lounging. Seamus spiced it up with the Tomahawk challenge at Christy’s Gastro Pub: conquer a hefty 1.4kg tomahawk steak, salad, veggies, and chips in 45 minutes. With determination, Seamus, or rather, Santa, faced the challenge.
Amidst cheers, he completed it in 25 minutes, rubbing his belly with a chuckle. Yet,

he pondered if he’d fit down chimneys postfeast. While Santa’s adventures bring joy, they also inspire competition. Seamus faced Paul Ottaway Christy’s Manager, both cheered on amidst a lively atmosphere. The Tomahawk challenge, available daily with a 24-hour booking notice, welcomed challengers. With a hearty “Ho Ho Ho,” Santa emerged victorious, reminding all that Santa’s watchful eye sees more than just gift lists. His return to the Arctic loomed, marked by beard growth and brow dyeing. While Santa’s feat in 25 minutes astounded, the record, set by Frank Flannery at 17 minutes, still stands. In Fuengirola’s festive embrace, Santa found warmth and adventure, a reminder that even in sun-drenched locales, the spirit of Christmas flourishes.
As Santa bids adieu to his holiday haven, his presence leaves a twinkle of magic behind, echoing the sentiment: wherever Santa roams, the spirit of giving and joy follows suit.
