Foreign Residents’ Day
THE threat of rain didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits on Foreign Residents Day held in Estepona’s Parque del
Calvario on Saturday April 20.
Interviewed by EWN , the mayor of Estepona, José María García
Urbano, who picked up a copy of Euro Weekly News while saying hello to stall holders, said, “Estepona is an example of coexistence between different nationalities and the Foreign Residents’ Day is a good example of this.”
Asked about the more than 120 different nationalities which currently make up Estepona’s resident population, the mayor replied: “Actually it’s now 135 nationa lities, all
the countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas are represented. It is truly a multi-cultural town.”
The day featured food from 20 countries including: gnocchi from
Italy, tacos from Mexico, empanadas from Argentina, as well as stands from Hungary, Romania, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ukraine and more.
The crowd, while enjoying the food from the different nations were treated to music and dancing by performers from over 30 countries, all residents of Estepona. The mayor posted on social media: “Thanks to all of you who made this day possible, which allowed us to get to know the culture, gastronomy and traditions of many of the nationalities that are represented in our town.”
‘Foreign Resident of the Year’ awards were also presented by the mayor to two Estepona residents: Stephen Evans from UK and Marina Bruynooghe from Belgium. Stephen played electric guitar with a group in the UK before he settled in Estepona where he formed Spanish bands and brought his experience here.
Marina has been resident in Estepona for 27 years and is a 400 metre champion athelete.
But, as Deputy Mayor Begoña Ortiz said to EWN : “All foreign residents of Estepona are prize winners today.”

Blazing
THE heat continues to break records in April: the Costa del Sol exceeded 30 degrees on Tuesday April 17. Benahavís, Manilva and Malaga exceeded 30 degrees, and Torremolinos registered more than 28 degrees. Coín recorded the highest temperature in Spain with 35.4 degrees.
Falling
A MAN died in Fuengirola on Wednesday April 17 after falling down a lift shaft when he jumped between two windows of his home to gain access to a room where he had left his keys.
Mijas
LOCATED in the heart of the Western Costa del Sol, Mijas perfectly combines its status as a mountain village with an important tourist development on the coast. Its location between the sea and the mountains gives it a host of charms, which place it among one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the province.
On the slopes of the hills rising above the coast, lies the village of Mijas. Its historic quarter (declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1969) has a layout of Moorish origin with whitewashed streets and a a splendid panoramic view of the Mediterranean.

Talk about rentals
RECENTLY the laws governing holiday rentals have undergone some changes which many foreign residents of Mijas may not be aware of. To remedy this situation, the Foreigners Department of the town hall has prepared an informative talk on Thursday May 16 at 4pm.
As the councillor for Foreigners, Mario Bravo, said, “there are many people in this area of the Costa del Sol who do not live continuously in their homes and who rent them and therefore we want to explain to them the advantages and disadvantages of this change
in legislation, so that they comply with it and also coordinate well with their communities of owners, so that the coexistence between owners and tenants in the short or long term is as peaceful as possible”, she said.
The meeting will take place at the town hall in La Cala and, although it is an open event, seats must be reserved by sending an email to frd@mijas.es. The meeting is being organised in collaboration with the law rm of María del Mar Núñez Alba and Marta Nacarino and will be followed by refreshments.
Cut their rope
THE animal rights party PACMA wants to take action against the exploitation of donkeys in Mijas.
PACMA is protesting speci cally in relation to the traditional ‘donkey-taxi’ service that has been emblematic of the town since the 1960s.
According to PACMA’s complaints, these animals face living and working conditions that put their welfare at risk, being subjected to long working hours tied to ropes that prevent them from moving pro-
perly, as well as cramped conditions in small stables at night, with no space to rest properly.
The situation has led the party to take action to put an end to this practice, including a formal request to Mijas Town Hall to cease the ‘donkey-taxi’ service and to seek alternatives that respect the dignity and welfare of these animals. Despite the request, the lack of institutional response has led PACMA to intensify its e orts, now calling for a protest on Sunday May 12 at the Mirador Hermanos Núñez.
The protest, under the slogan ‘Cut their rope’, seeks to raise public awareness about the treatment these animals receive.
sports and cultural facilities, including the Las Lagunas Theatre.
Mijas has a wide and well-kept coastline and the beaches of Mijas have nine Q Flags for Tourist Quality and three Blue Flags. In the heart of the Mijas coast is La Cala, the central nucleus of the municipality’s 12 kilometres of coastline. A pedestrian and cycle path provides the backbone of Mijas, connecting visitors with the entire coastline.
Both the climate and the landscape of Mijas o er innumerable sporting activities; paragliding, hang-gliding, signposted hiking routes in the Sierra de Mijas and you can play golf on its numerous courses.
AT Johnny’s Bar and Grill on Friday April 19, the La Cala de Mijas Lions celebrated their 26th birthday and the anniversary of the Charter granted to them by Lions International.
Members, their partners and friends enjoyed an excellent three-course lunch which was followed by an address given by Lion, Gill on the merits of Lionism. Lion President, Brenda then gave her report outlining her year as President and introduced Karen who will be the President next year.
Karen told the Lions of her intentions for the next year, outlining the deserving causes she intends to support. A special presentation was made to Lion, Rosalyn who has been a La Cala de Mijas Lion for 20 years. Flowers were presented to Brenda, Karen, Gill and Rosalyn. The next Lions events are their Fashion Show and fair at Butibamba Park on June 2, a ‘Let’s Play Darts’ event on Wednesday June 19 and a Summer Ball on Saturday June 29. TWO teenagers aged 12 and 14, apprentice lifeguards, saved three foreign tourists in Torremolinos on Friday April 19 from drowning after they were unable to return to land after drifting away from the shore on an inflatable toy doughnut, which left them at the mercy of the current.
The two boys, Luka Pavlovskyy (12) and Aleksandar Todorov Lekov (14), were training on the Carihuela beach in Torremolinos with their teammates and technicians when they saw three people having difficulty getting back to shore due to the strong waves.
The current had dragged them out to sea because they had negligently used an inflatable toy doughnut and they needed urgent assistance to avoid the risk of drowning, according to the Royal Spanish Lifesaving and Rescue Federation.
The two cadet lifeguards, from the Club Deportivo Talasa Torremolinos, rescued two of the three tourists, aged around 25, while the two technicians brought the other person in danger ashore.
Once on the shore, the boys, both residents of Torremolinos, performed CPR and first aid, as two of those rescued had lost consciousness. Once they had recovered, they were taken to a medical centre by the rest of the group of tourists accompanying them.
In a press release, the president of the Royal Spanish Lifesaving and Rescue Federation, Isabel García Sanz, praised the action of these two young people and their coaches and added that, “imprudence is the main cause of risk to human life in drowning.”
Running for research
IN Spain, more than 1,000 cases of Type 1 diabetes are diagnosed each year and DiabetesCERO wants to change this situation by funding research projects to nd a cure.
Specsavers Opticas has pledged to help fund this important research work, and optometrist Carlos Partal from the Marbella opticians will be running the Estepona Half Marathon on May 5 to raise money for this worthy cause. The 21 kilometre route starts in Cancelada, and Carlos and the rest of the participants will run along Estepona’s promenade by the sea.
This is a personal challenge for Carlos who is training hard to prepare himself to reach the nish line. He has previously run 5km and 10km races, but this is a
bigger challenge and he would love to be able to achieve it and raise lots of money for DiabetesCERO, he is aiming for €500. Donations can be made at Specsavers Opticas Marbella, or via the GoFundMe website.
Carlos told San Pedro Informacion that: “Diabetes is one of the main causes of vision loss, so I am delighted to raise funds for the Foundation’s diabetes research projects and help them nd a cure. Unfortunately, in eye examinations we see the damage that diabetes can cause to the blood vessels in the back of the eye.”
You can nd more information about the foundation on their website www.diabetescero.org. If you want to participate in the Estepona Half Marathon, you can sign up until April 30.

Kevin Fraser Park ‘ART & Solidarity’ raised more than €11,000 at an event in which the artistic and creative agency Al Aire Libra brought together more than 200 guests and 11 artists on April 11 for the benefit of the DEBRA Piel de Mariposa (Butterfly Skin) charity.
The event was made possible thanks to the collaboration and sponsorship of local brands on the Costa del Sol such as The Pool, Grupo Mosh, Banco Mediolanum and Land Rover (C de Salamanca), companies that joined in to help the families affected by this extremely rare disease.
The first stop was The Pool Marbella, where a collective art exhibition
was held. The event continued for the guests at Mosh Fun Kitchen, one of Marbella’s trendiest establishments, where they enjoyed an informal dinner courtesy of the Mosh Group, after which one of the highlights of the evening took place, with a charity raffle of 11 works of art as grand prizes, valued at more than €20,000.
At the end of the evening, the most awaited moment for all the
attendees took place, when the amount raised to donate to DEBRA was announced.
“This artistic and charity evening has only been possible thanks to the generosity of the 11 artists, who donated their talent and their works of art to raise funds”, said Marta Bernad, director of Al Aire Libra, adding, “It was undoubtedly great news for the families with Piel de Mariposa.”

Keeping entertained Vueling expands in Malaga
John SmithLIFE can sometimes be difficult if you are elderly and alone in a foreign country but on the Costa del Sol, there are quite a lot of organisations ready to help.
Some are charities, others are commercial organisations but they all want to ensure that there is still a great quality of life for those who may no longer have any direct family to care for them.
CK La Quinta is a private residential home situated in the Marbella suburb of San Pedro Alcantara and it certainly is a very welcoming operation that caters for both long and short term residential care. It offers those in need of 24-hour care the option to enjoy the comfort of a single or shared room which comes with a terrace or balcony, overlooking the outside swimming pool, gardens and pool bar.
It’s a nice setting which every Tuesday afternoon is made even nicer when volunteers from Age Concern Marbella and San Pedro visit and bring with them a few treats as well as a local musician who gives up his or her time to entertain.
The latest musician to take part, was a new-
comer David Sherwood (his stage name as he came from Nottingham) and he was discovered by Age Concern co-ordinator Debby practising in a local park so he wouldn’t annoy his neighbours.
The whole idea was instigated by popular local singer Nathan Dean who often entertains the residents

THE airline Vueling has already reached 25 million passengers since it began its operations from Malaga airport in 2005, and is committed to 18 routes, seven of which are international for summer 2024.
The company’s first flight from Malaga to Bilbao took place on April 1, 19 years
It has been a good first quarter for

Jordi Pla, the company’s director of network and strategic planning, said, “Malaga is very important for Vueling but also Vueling is very important for Malaga.
For 2024, Vueling will operate routes from the Costa del Sol to: Amsterdam, Brussels, Cardiff, Rome-Fiumicino, London-Gatwick, Nantes and Paris-Orly, and
11 domestic routes to Lanzarote, Barcelona, Bilbao, Fuerteventura, Ibiza, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Menorca, Oviedo, Palma de Mallorca, Santiago de Compostela and Tenerife North.
With regard to the forecasts for this high season, said Jordi Pla said that they are facing the summer with optimism. “It has been a good first quarter of the year, people want to travel more than ever and we are responding to that demand.”

THE mayor of Estepona, José María García Urbano, has announced that the town hall will allow the lling of communal and private swimming pools after conrming that the water supply is guaranteed in the municipality this summer and after the Junta de Andalucia has left this decision in the hands of local councils.
Estepona Town Hall has just put into operation two wells in the Padrón area that generate 2,000 cubic metres per day and is working on the construction of other wells to add another 3,400 cubic metres per day.
The mayor also announced that work will begin in June on the installation of the containerised desalination plant in
the Castor River area, which will be able to generate 8,000 cubic metres of fresh water per day in the first phase.
Following the latest rains which have brought the water capacity of the region to levels similar to those recorded last year and with the new works which will add up to 16,300 cubic metres per day to the network, the town hall considers that the use of the swimming pools of urbanisations and individuals can be permitted during the summer season.
The town hall asked the public for restraint however and said that, although water resources are assured for this summer, it is important that we all use water responsibly.

€40 million hotel
UAE capital investment fund Unicorn Royal Emirates has acquired for €40 million the hotel company Santa Marta, owner of a five-star and residential project on the beachfront to the east of Cancelada that is half built, and plans to develop the site before the end of the summer of 2027 according to a report in the local press.
With extensive experience in luxury residen-
tial and hotel projects, Unicorn Royal Emirates seeks to drive the development of the project, which will involve a total investment of more than €150 million, with the aim of completing it in the next three years as the hotel is already half built.
The project, located on the beachfront between Marbella and Estepona, will consist of a hotel with 160 rooms and several
apartments under the concept of branded residences or luxury homes, whose hotel rooms will be super-sized and have large terraces overlooking the sea. According to Sergio García, CEO of Unicorn Royal Emirates, the establishment, “will be one of the most luxurious five-star destinations in the region and one of the first branded residence projects in Spain.”
Rising sea levels
AN interactive map produced by NASA, shows that the sea level along the Costa del Sol will rise half a metre by the end of the century, while the water temperature on the beaches will reach new records.
According to data collected by NASA, the global average sea level rose by approximately 0.76 centimetres from 2022 to 2023, and by 2100, it is projected to rise by a further 30 to 122 centimetres.
By the end of the century, it is predicted that the Malaga coastline will experience a rapid rise in sea level. In the last three years, sea levels have risen by five centimetres in the coastal areas of the province and it will almost double in the next six years.
Climate change is not only causing sea levels to rise, but also sea temperatures. A fact that the people of Malaga have already witnessed, as record sea temperatures were reached in August 2022.
The NASA interactive map forecasts how the sea temperature will rise in Malaga and predicts that in the next six years it will increase by up to 0.10 degrees Celsius. By the end of the century, the sea temperature in Malaga will have risen by a further half a degree.
Prize winning shopping Don’t drink the water
FUENGIROLA Town Hall is promoting a new edition of the campaign ‘In Spring your purchases in Fuengirola have a prize’, to encourage sales in local businesses with a draw for a trip worth €2,000 to a destination of your choice.
This was announced by the councillor for Commerce, Francisco Javier García Lara, who explained that it will take place from May 1 to June 15 and aims to encourage both residents and visitors to buy their products in local shops.
No prior registration is required with the aim of making it easier for everyone to participate in this campaign. The only requirement is that the value of the purchase exceeds €20 in
any establishment in our town,” said García Lara who added that, “in the last edition, which was the Christmas campaign, there were more than 1,’’’ participants and the winner was a family from Fuengirola who will enjoy a cruise around Europe.”
There are two ways to participate, explained García Lara: “the customer making a photo of the purchase receipt and sending it to comercio@fuengirola. org with your personal details or the shop can submit the information to the town hall.
The deadline for sending the purchase tickets to the e-mail address comer cio@fuengirola.org to participate in the draw for a trip valued at €2,000 is June 21.

SOME 5,000 people who live in El Chaparral, Mijas, have been told not to drink the tap water as there is a “presence of higher values of trihalomethanes,” according to the analysis of the Junta de Andalucía.
Trihalomethanes are a byproduct of the water treatment process. They are formed when natural organic material, such as the decaying vegetation commonly found in lakes and reservoirs, reacts with chlorine used to treat the water. Longterm exposure to triha-
lomethanes has been linked to many serious illnesses, including an increased risk of various cancers.
The Ministry of Health and Consumer Affairs of the Andalucian Regional Government, has declared the water in the supply area of the residential area of El Chaparral, which is located between the municipalities of Marbella and Mijas in Malaga and where some 5,000 people live, unfit for consumption.
Aquavega SL, the operator of this area, has been informed of, “the
need to implement corrective measures” and, in the meantime, the company must inform the public that the water from El Chaparral is not suitable for consumption, nor is it suitable for the preparation of foodstuffs. However, it may be used for personal hygiene and household cleaning.
The Junta has also said that Aquavega, “must provide an alternative supply to the population affected by this,” until further tests have been carried out to ensure that the water is safe.
Insights on drought VOX Pop
AS Spain suffers through one of the most difficult drought periods in its history we took to the streets to find out how the lack of rainfall has affected you. We also asked do you think the government could be doing more to tackle the drought.
JOANNE , a retired regular visitor to the Alicante region from the UK said: “We certainly can’t control the amount of rain that’s in the lap of the gods!”
“They could introduce a national grid so water could be moved from places where they have more rain. It would be similar to what they do with electricity, it would be costly but they would only have to set it up once.”
JOSE , a Colombian resident in Asturias and a visitor in the Costa Blanca North area due to family ties. “As a visitor in Alicante, it has been disheartening to see tourist sites like Fonts de l’Algar (one of the best tourist attractions in the area, in my opinion) closed due to the lack of rain. Being just a visitor, unfortunately, I am not aware of all the measures being taken to address the drought in Alicante.”
ELIJAH , an American tourist considering residency in Spain, shared his perspective, noting, “While I haven’t been affected much by the recent lack of rain, I do appreciate the effort that the government and the people put into rationing the water and eliminating waste. I think it builds a strong sense of community, and I have been learning how to be less wasteful myself while I’ve been here. Was a bit of a culture shock at first, but I think it’s the responsible thing to do, and it makes one appreciate their resources more.”
GARY from Manchester said “It hasn’t affected us much. Although we do try to use water responsibly. Some people still hose out their front yards every day. We could never do that!”
LISA a resident of Mazarron said “Well, to be honest, it hasn’t affected us. We have friends that live on the Costa del Sol and they have water cuts at night and limits on their water. They don’t know if they will be able to fill their pools this summer. While it hasn’t rained a lot we haven’t noticed any direct issues because of the lack of water. I guess the gover-
nment is doing something right.”

We also bumped into 53-year-old Paul. Originally from the UK, Paul has been living in Alicante for over 20 years. He confirmed: “It is concer-

Get paid to sleep! Screeching like a gull
THE German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Cologne is seeking volunteers.
Participants are needed to join in a groundbreaking bed rest study scheduled to commence in September 2024, spanning two months.
In exchange for their commitment, participants will receive compensation of €18,000 for their time and contribution.
However, there’s a twist to this study: participants will be required to spend 60 days lying in bed at an inclined angle of six degrees, with their feet positioned higher than their heads.
This setup is designed to simulate the effects of space on the human body, replicating the conditions experienced by astronauts.
According to Edwin Mulder, the head of the study at the DLR Institute of Ae-
rospace Medicine, this inclined position induces similar shifts in body fluids as observed in space.
The study is conducted in collaboration with NASA, aiming to understand and mitigate the physiological effects of microgravity on space travellers.
In total, participants will spend 88 days at the DLR centre, including preparation and follow-up periods.
The DLR has a long history of conducting bed rest studies since the 1980s, contributing significantly to space medicine research.
Applications are open to individuals aged 24 to 55, with a height ranging from 1.53 to 1.90 metres and a BMI between 18 and 30.
Prospective participants must be in good health, non-smokers, and proficient in German.
AS foreigners living in Spain, many of us can still be surprised at some of the bizarre traditions that occur, but most of Europe can match Spain.
The town of De Panne in Belgium, hosted the European Seagull Screeching Championships on Sunday April 21 and there was de nitely a Pan-European turn out.
The championship is very much a Belgian organised a air with categories for adults, children and groups (known as colonies which is the collective name for seagulls) but the winner in the adult section came from Portugal and the winner in the children’s section came from the UK and it was only in the colony section that Belgium took the top three places.
According to the organisers, “gulls are the sound of the sea, the acrobats in the air, giving you the time of your life and a sea gull screeching brings back good memories,” that is of course if you have never had your ice cream stolen on the promenade, been buzzed by Stuka-like dive bombers with razor sharp beaks or been the recipient of one of their special air born deposits.
Supposedly, those taking part at the event, take the competition very seriously, studying the sounds that the gulls make and trying to imitate then precisely, although the fact that the competition took place in a packed out bar where the beer was owing and a comedian was booked to follow the event, might indicate a certain tongue in cheek attitude when they describe the event.
Cheers!
SIXTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD David Clarkson, originally from the UK but living in Australia for over 40 years, set a new record by visiting 120 pubs in just 24 hours.
David beat the previous record of 99 pubs, held by Australians Harry Kooros and Jake Loiterton.
He did this pub tour in Sydney, Australia.
David, a retired accountant from Lancashire, says his life revolves around “travel, drinking, and spreadsheets.”
He used his accounting skills to carefully plan his route using licensing data, tables, and Google Maps.
Driven by his love for exploring and the many interesting pubs in Sydney, David felt con dent in taking on this challenge, citing his experience.
His journey started on Thursday, April 11, at midday, with a drink at the Captain Cook Hotel.
He walked to all 120 pubs on his list.
At each pub, David had to buy a drink and drink at least 125 ml of liquid.
He drank a total of 20 litres, mostly soft drinks and juices.
David had friends as witnesses at
each pub, and sta signed his logbook.
Pete Fairbairn from Guinness World Records joined him at the start and end to verify his attempt.
David’s cheerful attitude caught the attention of other pub-goers, and he particularly enjoyed the speakeasy bars on Clarence Street.
He nished his journey the next day at the Sussex Garden Bar, less than a kilometre from where he started.
Pete reviewed the evidence and ocially declared David the record holder, marking the end of his impressive achievement.
From flush to fly!
WIZZ AIR has teamed up with a British company to look into using human waste to make fuel for planes.
They want to change the way we fly.
The Hungarian airline is working with Firefly Green Fuels, a UK biofuel company, to figure out how to turn sewage waste into a type of fuel called sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
Firefly Green Fuels has come up with a way to change waste from sewers into fuel that planes can use.
They plan to start supplying this fuel by
2028.
Wizz Air’s UK division will get up to 525,000 tonnes of this fuel over 15 years.
This new method uses waste to make SAF, which has a much smaller carbon footprint than regular jet fuel, about 70 per cent less.
While it won’t fully replace normal fuel, planes can mix it with regular fuel without needing to change their engines, up to a maximum of 50 per cent.
Although making SAF from human waste is better for the environment, it’s currently
more expensive than regular jet fuel.
James Hygate, the CEO of Firefly, knows using waste is unusual, but he sees it as a valuable resource.
Firefly is getting approval to use their system to fuel planes, and they’re confident it will work.
They plan to help supply a lot of SAF in the UK and hope this idea will catch on worldwide.
Wizz Air wants to use SAF for at least 10 per cent of its flights by 2030, in line with a rule from the UK government.
Trains no longer run on time
THE cliché that the trains always run on time in Germany is no longer true.
The latest network status report for the state-owned Deutsche Bahn revealed crumbling infrastructure, with almost half the signal
boxes in poor condition, leading to one-third of its trains running late.
New developments in train design, digitalisation and the stations of the future were presented on April 17 at the Kraftwerk events
venue in a repurposed power plant in Berlin.
The use of AI technology is expected to streamline engineering works, particularly highlighted by the planned overhaul of the 78km stretch between Frankfurt and Mannheim scheduled for after the Euro 2024.
Enhancements are also focused on improving passenger comfort. A new two-seater compartment with sliding privacy doors and adjustable tint controls could be installed in long-distance trains in the future to allow greater privacy.
Another new feature is scent buttons located in doorways and lifts at stations to improve passenger mood and real-time occupancy displays on long-distance trains. Travellers can bag their seat with a ‘digital towel’ during their entire journey, even without a seat reservation, by setting the display to ‘Occupied from <station> until’.
Immigrants refuse aid
YOU literally couldn’t make up a story about illegal immigrants in an overcrowded boat telling Belgian coastguards that they don’t want to be rescued until they get to the UK.
This was reported by Belgian TV station VRT News on the morning of Monday April 15 as no less than 57 men and women were spotted on a large dinghy in the North Sea.
As reported by VRT, Belgian Coastguard press officer Peter Van Camp explained that following reports to police of sightings of the boat, “The emergency services immediately set sail from the ports of Nieuwpoort and Ostend in an attempt to convince
the people on the boat to turn back because the situation was too dangerous, but they had no intention of stopping.
“We talked to them, but we cannot force them to turn back. The boat is overcrowded, there are people sitting on the edge. If you intervene, the boat could capsize. Safety is the most important thing.”
For these reasons and the obvious determination of those on board, the authorities decided to escort the dinghy to British waters and to then hand over the rescue duties to the UK coastguard who they had previously alerted.
Celebrating King’s Day
MORE than 100 years of celebrating the changing faces of the Dutch monarchy, King’s Day approaches once again on April 27.
The Netherlands are charging up for one of the largest festivities in the country, celebrating the birthday of the reigning King, Willem-Alexander.
King’s Day is an unusually changing tradition, which was first celebrated on August 31, 1885, in honour of Princess Wilhelmina’s birthday, and was moved to April 30 after her daughter Juliana ascended to the throne.
Today, it celebrates the birthday of the current King of the Netherlands but the festivities last much longer than one day.
The pre-party; King’s Night, lights up the streets with live music and dancing, as well as some free festivals, including The Life I Live in The Hague or the Royal Dutch in Eindhoven.
On the King’s birthday, cities which have canals fill up with boats, where people dressed in orange; the Dutch national colour, party on usually the only functioning public transport throughout the festivity.
Flea markets and concerts are on just about every street corner across the country, and the royal family can often be spotted in public; strengthening the relationship between the royalty and the public through celebration.

UK leads interest
DATA sourced from property portal idealista reveals the largest proportion of searches for luxury homes in Portugal come from the UK, amounting to 11.9 per cent of total international demand at the outset of 2024.
Following closely are the USA (11.2 per cent), Germany (10.2 per cent), Spain (9.2 per cent), and France (8.6 per cent). This is a slight uptick from the UK compared to the previous year (up 0.8 per cent), while interest from the USA has waned (4 per cent down). This was to be expected, given that the USA was one of the top nationalities taking advantage of Golden Visas.
Patios of Cordoba
ANDALUCIAN patios are true jewels of Spanish architecture and culture, especially during the spring, when temperatures become warmer and plants begin to bloom. These courtyards become true oases of colour and fragrance which is why Cordoba organises a competition every year to choose the most beautiful one in the town.
A total of 52 patios will open their doors for the Competition of Patios of Cordoba 2024, which include 23 patios of historic architecture, 20 modern ones and nine unique ones. The opening and closing times of the courtyards is from 11am until 2pm and from 6pm to 10pm during each day of the festival.
Admission is free and you will only have to wait in line to gain access. It is recommended to be there early in the morning to avoid crowds and the high temperatures that usua-
lly occur on these days.
Due to the dry and hot climate of Cordoba, the inhabitants of the city, rst the Romans and later the Muslims, adapted the typology of their houses centred around a courtyard, which normally had a fountain in the centre and on many occasions a well to collect rainwater. The Muslims readapted this scheme by making the entrance to the house from the street through a hallway and adding abundant plants to increase the sensation of freshness.
Since 1921, during the rst fortnight of May, Cordoba Council has organised a competition, in which the owners of the patios decorate their homes with a multitude of owers planted in owerbeds and pots, which are hung on the walls or placed on the typical Cordoban paving.

Good relations
MARBELLA MOMENTS
BY NICOLE KINGDURING one of my interviews this year with the British Ambassador, Hugh Elliott, the topic of crime and guns came up. He said that security is one of those areas where the Embassy has excellent cooperation with Spain, even counting on a team from the National Crime Agency, which works as part of the embassy team.
One of the challenges in the UK is that of firearms, some of which may have come from Spain, where it is legal to have a firearm for use with blanks, for example. There was a business exporting these to the UK where they were then converted into lethal weapons. They managed to clamp down on these illegal exports thanks to the close cooperation with the Spanish authorities.
Getting things done requires excellent relationships with the Spanish authorities, the police, the Spanish Guardia Civil etc. One of the Embassy’s key roles is to make sure the relationships are really, really good so that when it comes to tr-

ying to get educational agreements in place or guns off the streets in the UK, they get that collaboration they need.
The Ambassador also brought up the fact that not all of the 18 million British visitors to Spain are upstanding citizens and they have also been collaborating with the Spanish police in a campaign, ‘the Most Wanted’ to try to seek the help of the British and Spanish communities to track down fugitives and bring them to justice. This has been an extremely successful campaign, thanks also to the international community.
People are friendly
In 2020, Caroline Rindeström and her family made the bold decision to relocate to Spain.
HAVING spent countless vacations in the picturesque Torrevieja region, basking in the warmth of the sun and indulging in various sporting activities, the family found themselves enchanted by the idea of permanently settling in this vibrant country. Without a doubt, Caroline finds immense joy in her Spanish experience, revelling in the abundant sunshine, learning the language and savouring the delectable cuisine, particularly her favourite - seafood. She candidly admits that she cannot envision returning to Sweden.
“The people here,” she remarks, “are remarkably open-minded, friendly, and approachable. It’s heartwarming how you can exchange a simple ‘hola’ with everyone you meet at the supermarket. There’s a genuine warmth and familiarity that permeates daily interactions.”

POLICE appealed to the public for help in contacting the owner - or owners - of two wedding rings found in a supermarket car park on the Dublin Road in Fermoy (Cork). The Gardai said each ring bore a “unique” engraving that made it easy to ensure that they could only be reclaimed by their rightful owner or owners.

Damped down
BONFIRES, campfires and barbecues in or near forests and other isolated areas have been banned between September 15 and 17 as the authorities take steps to prevent wildfires. Norway’s Fire Service also stressed that fires could still be lit out-of-doors if there was no danger of a blaze spreading to adjoining land or woodland.
Full stop
RAIL passengers faced delays throughout the country on April 15 after trains on all lines ground to a halt in eastern, southern and northern Norway owing to what was first announced as a signal error. Officials later maintained that the incident was caused a major power failure “linked to the signalling system.”
BEARS are now emerging from their six months of hibernation in Sweden, although Benny Gafvert from the World Wildlife Fund explained that they are not aggressive “unless they are provoked.” He added that except when out hunting with dogs in forest areas, it was not usual for people to encounter bears.

THE Migration Agency told the Swedish government, that it would be unable to meet its target of providing accommodation in deportation centres for an extra one thousand people without more funding. With the current level of funding, the Agency will only be able to accommodate another 750 people, it warned.

AFTER almost three years, excavating the 18-kilometre Fehmarnbelt tunnel beneath the Baltic linking Denmark and Germany has been completed. “It was difficult,” Pedro da Silva Jorgensen, the project’s Technical Deputy Director said, as the subsoil between both countries was a “complex mix” that included 70ton granite blocks.

Dr is out
FROM May 1 onwards, the title of doctor may not be used on a German identity card or passport. ON January 20 each year, its Patron Saint’s Day, the people of San Sebastian (also known in the Basque language as Donostia) celebrate La Tambo rrada where up to 15,000 locals ga ther together and beat drums all day and night.
Local clubs vie with each other to offer the most spectacu lar event as they march through the city dressed in traditional Basque costumes, chefs outfits or 19th century military uniforms.
Like most events of this type, the origin is forgotten but one of the most plausible reasons is that La Tamborrada was introduced at the start of the 19th century during the Pe-
ninsula War when Napoleon’s troops entered the city and women banged buckets.
The drumming and parades start at midnight in the Plaza de la Constitución with the city flag being raised and the first group of drummers play the Marcha de San Sebastián as a signal to the other groups that they can start and that’s it for the next 24 hours.
At noon on January 20, children from various schools, also dressed to impress and with their own special ‘tamborrada infantil’ set off en route for the City Hall where they converge and add to the cacophony of sound. Then at midnight the march is played again, the flag is lowered and that’s the end.

Data replaces batteries Steel deal
THE site of what was to be Britain’s first gigafactory in Blyth (Northumberland) has been sold to US private equity investors.
Northumberland County Council announced that it had sold the land to Blackstone, which will build a data centre there.
The land in Cambois near Blyth was earmarked for a £3.8 billion (€4.45 billion) Britishvolt factory making batteries for electric vehicles before the company collapsed into administration in January 2023 with the loss of 200 jobs.
At the time, Britishvolt, backed by Swiss mining
multinational Glencore, was due to receive £100 million (€117.18 million) in the UK government fun ding.
Australian company, Recharge Industries ba sed in Geelong (Austra lia), agreed to take on Britishvolt after finalising a deal with the company’s administrators, renewing hopes of building the Blyth gigafactory.
Instead, Recharge received a winding-up petition in March 2024 as former senior executives reclaimed unpaid wages.
A month earlier, auditors EY said Recharge defaulted on the agreement and had yet to pay the £8.75 million (€10.25 million) that was owed on the deal. Since then nothing appeared to have moved at the 235acre Blyth site. Northumberland
SPAIN’S National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) suspended trading in Naturgy shares for two hours on the morning of April 17.
It was reported that the halt was ordered while awaiting “disclosure of relevant information.” This followed rumours of a possible takeover by Abu Dhabi’s TAQA, which was in discussions with Criteria, one of Naturgy’s majority shareholders.

“This really unique opportunity for Northumberland offers a huge boost to the regeneration and renaissance of the local area,” Sanderson said.

DR MARTENS shares plunged 29.4 per cent as the bootmaker issued its fifth profit warning since 2021.
The company expects a tough time with rising overheads and falling US sales as shares slump to 62 pence (approximately €0.72), compared with £3.70 (€4.32) when Dr Martens was floated three years ago.

UK inflation fell in March but not enough to underpin hopes of a lower bank rate in the near future.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) announced that the consumer prices index (CPI) fell from February’s 3.4 per cent to 3.2 per cent, a two-and-a half-year low but less than analysts’ 3.1 per cent prediction.
Services’ inflation, which the Bank of England (BoE) watches with an eagle eye, fell from 6.1 per cent to 6 per cent in March, disappointing City expectations of 5.8 per cent.
Tomasz Wieladek, chief European economist with the asset manager T Row Price, told the Guardian that the BoE would be “worried” that the inflation battle was not yet won.
Services’ inflation would concern the BoE and make it cautious about cutting rates this summer, Wieladek said.
SPANISH steelmaker Acerinox is buying US nickel and cobalt alloy specialist Haynes in a €740 million deal.
The operation carried out by Acerinox’s US subsidiary North American Stainless (NA), has approval from US anti-trust regulators and was ratified at the Haynes’ shareholder meeting in April, Acerinox said. A routine revision of Haynes books by external auditors is all that remains pending.
The purchase will be fully-funded with existing cash on Acerinox’s balance sheet, it revealed when the deal was announced in February, and the takeover is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2024, the Spanish company said.

RESTAURANT BRANDS IBERIA (RBI), which owns Spain’s Burger King outlets, lost €12.2 million in 2023.
This was double 2022’s losses despite a record turnover of €1.88 billion, according to RBI’s annual accounts submitted to Spain’s Registro Mercantil, equivalent to Companies House.
The negative figures were the result of the company’s €90.8 million finance
costs, which were 127 per cent more
than in 2022. Of this, €68.5 million corresponded to interest paid on a €310 million loan from RBI’s sole shareholder, the private equity firm Cinven, whose parent company is based in London.
“The net results reflect an increase in our loan payments and debt incurred though our strategy of openings and acquisitions,” RBI said.
posal was rejected by the Board of IDS, it looks forward to continuing to engage constructively with the board as EP Group considers all its options,” the communique said.
This went on to say that EP Group viewed the UK as “an attractive and dynamic market for investment” and was proud to support the businesses in which it invested. These include Royal Mail through EP Group-owned VESA Equity, which has a 27.6 per cent stake in IDS.
“EP Group recognises that Royal Mail is in a challenging situation,” the statement said, pointing out that increasing competition from multinational companies in the UK postal market, private investment in Royal Mail becomes crucial.
As news of Kretinsky’s proposal broke, IDS shares rose by 20 per cent to 257p (€3) valuing the company at £2.47 billion (€2.89 billion).

Wonder why that is
LEAPY LEE SAYS IT
OTHERS THINK IT
THE problem with most of the woke brigade is that they are generally so far up their self-righteous soap boxes they categorically refuse to entertain the opinions of others. When arguments or discussions tend to veer away from their points of view, they are always the first to accuse their dissenters of right wing ideals or racism.
They then sit smugly back; fully aware that the discussion is now over and the onus is now on those that disagreed with their rhetoric to explain why they themselves are not racially motivated! It’s a clever ploy, designed to crush the freedom of speech and encouraged by many a political despot over the course of history. Well I don’t buy it, and categorically refuse to yet again waste this short narrative explaining my very strong views on the subject.
I believe in live and let live. As long as it causes no harm to others and doesn’t weaponise my points of view, frankly I really couldn’t care less how anyone
handles their current manifestation. I also have no problem with how people wish to be addressed. Tom, Dick Harry, Fem, Those, Them or Wottsit. It’s truly is all the same to me.
What I do care about however is reserving the right to also refer to myself as I choose. Being pressured to adapt to another individual’s views and opinions is what sticks in my craw. Unfortunately this is often the problem with disgruntled minorities.
Many of them suffer from insecurity or inferiority complexes. Consequently the more of us they can inveigle into embracing their philosophies, the more secure they feel (The mentality of cult!)
To achieve this they need to convince others to either join them or amend their own beliefs. Sooner or later however the majority begin to resent their often lam brained intrusions and demos and their actions begin to achieve the reverse effect. One of the real casualties in this whole diatribe of politically correct ‘uman rights is of course true common sense. I recall The University of Salford issuing a ‘subject matter’ warning for Dickens’
Oliver Twist; in case it causes ‘distress or anxiety’ among literature students. Some time ago, the University of Northampton also issued ‘alert warnings’ to their students about Orwell’s 1984, Dickens Great Expectations and, of all things - Bronte’s Jane Eyre! The University stated that, it has the responsibility to ‘prepare students for potentially sensitive topics of child abuse domestic violence or racial prejudice’. They probably don’t allow winners or losers either!
This is of course not all quite as ridiculous as it sounds. The more they relieve the young of responsibility, the easier they are to manipulate toward their nanny state ideals. Left wing political control is always hovering behind all this undemocratic PC rhetoric. And incidentally, shoving floral bouquets down the barrels of Chinese and Russia’s silos won’t work either! Just to conclude, it was recently announced that 400,000 people a year are leaving the UK.
Well now, I wonder why that is? Keep the faith

Getting on my nerves
I’VE always fancied going to Australia until I started watching a daytime TV show called Nothing to Declare. Wow what a mad performance it is to get in. I’ve seen people get fined for having a banana in their carry on. There are so many rules and regulations it’s scary. I’m sure that it’s all carefully worked out and mostly necessary. I’ve even seen people have their shoes confiscated until they are treated because they had mud on them. Mind you, some of the stuff punters don’t declare is nuts too (actually you can’t take nuts in either!) Mostly travellers from Asia seem to think that there are no supermarkets or restaurants there. The amount of food they try and smuggle in is incredible. Anyway, it’s too far and at my age I can’t afford to lose a day travelling.
Interesting phone call from my daughter the other day who is in Ibiza at present. ‘Dad I’ve just gone to the cash machine and it’s not working and I’ve got no money. Can you send €10 to so and so by Bizum?’ I did it but only because I live in Spain and Bizum
only works in Spain and it was the only way she could get paid apart from cash. I don’t understand how so many people will not listen to me and heed my warning. Do not depend on plastic. Always carry some cash with you. It doesn’t have to be fortunes - €20 minimum. Just do it! I think I’ve seen that phrase used somewhere before. Just watched a remake of a movie called Roadhouse. The original starred the late, great Patrick Swayze and was fantastic. The remake, on the other hand, was a pile of dog doo, terrible and whoever thought Connor McGregor was the right man for the villain should be fired immediately. Stop doing remakes of good movies, it’s a cop out. There must be some great scripts out but it seems someone thinks it’s better to take the lazy way out and ruin a good old action movie.
A message to Ben Affleck’s kid - your grandfather’s funeral reading is not the best time to let everyone know you have decided to change gender. I don’t care what you identify as, that’s your business, and I hope it all works out great for you. But that wasn’t the time or place. This whole entitlement crap is getting on my nerves. Just have a little thought for others.

Tarragona’s early saints and spectacles
EVERYONE knows about the attractions of Barcelona, but maybe not those of nearby Tarragona...
In striking contrast to Barcelona’s thrusting hipness, Tarragona’s main appeal stems from the Roman era, when the town, then called Tarraco, was the bustling melting pot of the western Mediterranean and Saint Paul was packing them in with his punchy sermons.
Compared to those hedonistic pagans up the coast, Tarragona has always been a devout kind of town and the sarcophagi and inscribed tablets at the necropolis suggest it got on the Christian bandwagon pretty early. Some of those who hopped aboard a bit too early for their own safety may have ended up in the circus, pitting their faith against the sharp claws of some lions.
And just like the Roman Forum, the amphitheatre is still a spectacular attraction overlooking the sea, with a seating pitch only marginally less steep than in Barcelona’s modern
equivalent, the Camp Nou football stadium. Round off a step back into antiquity with a visit to one of the many cafés where only the exemplary coffee makes any concession to the 21st century.
Speaking of ancient times, did you know that the rabbit was brought to Britain by the Romans, who discovered it in Spain? And that the name ‘España’ derives from the Phoenician expression for ‘land of rabbits’? What a hare-raising thought...

Body art changes A gentle thread technique
DOES the thought of how a tattoo will age deter you from getting one?
Tattoos, like skin, undergo changes over time due to ageing and sun exposure. As we age, skin loses elasticity and firmness, causing tattoos to stretch and potentially distort. Additionally, colours may fade or blur over the years.
These natural changes can be a concern for some considering tattoos. However, with
can age gracefully. Opt for bold, simple designs that are less likely to blur over time. Regularly moisturise and protect tattoos from sun exposure to maintain vibrancy.
Ultimately, the decision to get a tattoo should consider long-term commitment and personal preference. While ageing affects tattoos, many embrace these changes as part of their life story.
Looking after your tattoo will help it age as grace-
FACIAL threading is a hair removal technique that originated in Eastern cultures and has gained popularity worldwide. It involves using a twisted cotton thread to swiftly remove unwanted facial hair, including fine hairs and peach fuzz, by lifting them from the follicle. This method is preferred by many for its precision and ability to create defined eyebrow shapes and clean facial contours. Unlike waxing or tweezing, threading is less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions as it does not

Make-up texture debate
CHOOSING between cream and powder make-up products depends on individual preferences and skin types. Cream products, like foundations and blushes, offer a dewy, hydrating finish ideal for dry or mature skin. They blend easily and provide a natural, luminous look.
On the other hand, powder products, such as setting powders, eyeshadows, and bronzers, are excellent for oily or combination skin. They help control shine and set

For a versatile make-up routine, consider using both cream and powder products strategically.
Use cream blushes and highlighters for a youthful glow, then set with translucent powder for longevity. Experiment with different textures to discover what works best for your skin type and desired make-up look.
Versatile healthy oil
Evening primrose oil is derived from the seeds of the evening primrose plant and is known for its potential health benefits. Rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential fatty acid, evening primrose oil is believed to support various aspects of health. One of its primary benefits is its ability to promote skin health. GLA helps
and elasticity, potentially reducing symptoms of conditions like eczema and acne.
This oil is also used to alleviate symptoms of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and menopause, such as breast tenderness, mood swings, and hot flashes, due to its hormonal balancing properties.
Additionally, some studies suggest that evening primrose oil may support cardiovascular health by reducing inflammation and improving blood flow.
As with any supplement, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider before starting EPO to determine appropriate dosage and ensure it is safe for
Fitness knows no age
STARTING a gym routine later in life offers numerous benefits for physical health and overall well-being. Regular exercise can improve strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular health, reducing the risk of age-related ailments like heart disease and osteoporosis.
Gym workouts also boost mood and mental clarity, enhancing cognitive function and reducing stress. It’s never too late to reap these rewards, regardless of age or fitness level.
Quick fix saviour?
DRY shampoo offers convenience and freshness without water, making it ideal for quick touch-ups between regular washes. It absorbs excess oil, adds volume, and extends the time between washes, saving time and water. Additionally, dry shampoo can provide texture and grip for styling.
However, overuse of dry shampoo can lead to product buildup, potentially clogging hair
follicles and causing scalp irritation or dryness.
It may also leave a visible residue, especially on darker hair colours. Additionally, dry shampoo does not cleanse the scalp as effectively as traditional shampoo, and regular use without proper cleansing can impact scalp health. Use dry shampoo in moderation and pair with regular washing for optimal hair care.
When beginning a gym routine as an older adult, start gradually and consult with a fitness professional to tailor a programme to your needs and limitations. Focus on low-impact activities like swimming, yoga, or walking to build endurance and confidence.
With dedication and perseverance, anyone can enjoy the transformative benefits of fitness, proving that age is just a number on the journey to a healthier, more active lifestyle.

ONE of the attractions of many Spanish properties is that they have balconies or terraces in their apartments or houses. Whilst this is great when the weather is clement, but when it’s too hot, raining, or windy, they can end up as simply being wasted space rather than an additional room.
Some people decide to add canopies which can either be set onto an external wall and can be rolled out to add shade or drop a canopy from an overhead balcony to give the impression of another room. The problem with these options of course is they are open to deterioration due to the weather and when it rains or the wind is heavy you need to roll them in otherwise, they will bow and deteriorate even more quickly. In the UK, the answer is often to build
a conservatory but depending on the type of space you may have available in your Spanish property, one very popular option is to install what are known as glass curtains.
If you have a balcony over a terrace then you will be able to find one of the many manufacturers and installers who advertise in Euro Weekly News to create what will essentially be a new room when the glass curtains are extended or a genuine terrace or balcony when they are opened. There are various layouts which can de designed to fit your personal needs based on the physical aspects of the property and in fact a room can be opened up to become an outside space as well.Glass curtains add something special.

90% of new homes bought by foreigners
THE sale of new homes to international clients in 2023 grew by 13 per cent, according to AEDAS Homes. Particularly of note was an increase in foreign demand which, on the Costa del Sol, resulted in nine out of every 10 reservations for brand new homes being made by international buyers.
The company has announced this in a publication, ‘Profile of the International Buyer of New Homes 2023’. The data for the Costa del Sol, based on a sample of more than 400 clients, confirms the boom in foreign demand.
“AEDAS Homes has also become the main developer for international clients in Spain and on the Costa del Sol. For years now, we have been promoting a commercial line aimed
at and specialised in attending to this foreign client, with a product that is very focused on their needs and in areas close to the sea and to restaurants and leisure facilities”, said Ángel Fernández, Territorial Director of AEDAS Homes on the Costa del Sol.
The majority of the buyers, almost 80 per cent, purchase property as second homes, while 13.3 per cent buy as an investment and the remaining 7.3 per cent are looking for a permanent home.
With regard to the nationality of the buyer on the Costa del Sol, Europeans account for 84.2 per cent of international purchases and, by country, the ranking is led by Poles (20.9 per cent), followed by the Dutch (12.8 per cent) and Czechs (8.7 per cent).
27% of buyers did not apply for a mortgage
Decrease in home buyers who need mortgages
SINCE the first interest rate hike by the European Central Bank (ECB) in 2022, the number of buyers who have bought a home without a mortgage has risen by eight percentage points.
In 2022, 27 per cent of buyers did not apply for a mortgage, by 2023 this had increased to 32 per cent and so far in 2024 the trend has continued to grow to 35 per cent, according to the
latest survey by Fotocasa Research, based on more than 8,200 interviews, conducted in February 2024.
After two years of tightening credit conditions, both house hunters and house seekers are now well aware of the current high mortgage rate environment. It is therefore not surprising that the impact on homebuying intentions has eased slightly, although it re-
mains at significantly high levels.
Nearly a half of potential home buyers between the ages of 25 and 35 confess that the rise in mortgages has impacted their property purchase intentions. However, less than a quarter of those buyers over 55 stated that the rise in mortgages had any impact on their intention to buy.

Meet property expert Johan
EURO WEEKLY NEWS sat down with the man behind the magic of the Svensk Hemservice real estate service. Johan is originally from Sweden and has been living on the Costa del Sol for a number of years working in the real estate business. Johan is not only committed to providing an impeccable property finding experience, but he is also deeply passionate about his work too.
Johan explained to EWN that he has been working in real estate for many years and specialising in the Costa del Sol area since 2019. He stated that: “I am lucky, because I can help people find their dream home, to start a new life. Each time that I succeed at this it means that I not only reached my goal, but also my client’s too. I am grateful that I get the opportunity to meet new people and learn about them, at the same time learning how to help my clients even better. I believe we can always become better
as people and as real estate agents.”
We asked this real estate expert what makes the Costa del Sol area so special in terms of buying a property. Johan explained that: “The market in Costa del Sol is special because it covers a lot of land, and people from all over the world find themselves living or wanting to live here. You can always find your place, either at the beach or in the mountains or in a city, and the properties are from one bedroom apartments to a mansion or a big farm inland.”
Another question that many are surely curious about, is whether or not this is a good time to buy, and what the coast can expect from Costa del Sol’s property market in 2024. He told us, “Yes, during 2024 we can expect the market to point upwards, especially down here on the coast and many people are always looking for a great property in the area.”
Finally, we asked Johan what advice he would give to anyone who wants to buy a home in Spain but does not know where to start. He said his best advice would be: “Think about what you need in terms of size, easy access, views and whether you are looking to be close to the airport or other public transport services.
“You also need to think about if you are looking for a holiday home, investment or to a new start in life. Concentrate on one area, or it will be too much input. Go on holiday and get a feel for different places, and since the market is fluent don’t go looking at a property until you are ready to buy, otherwise it will be gone next time you come here.”

Vertical gardens
VERTICAL gardens on the Costa del Sol epitomise the fusion of beauty and functionality, whether natural or artificial. These living walls, adorned with a vibrant tapestry of foliage, flowers, and cascading vines, serve as stunning focal points, enhancing outdoor spaces with their lush greenery.
In addition to their aesthetic appeal, both natural and artificial vertical gardens offer practical benefits. They act as natural insulators, regulating temperatures and reducing energy costs, while also absorbing noise and air pollutants, thereby improving overall air quality.
The intricate layers of vegetation in natural vertical gardens create microhabitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife, fostering biodiversity in urban environments. Similarly, artificial vertical gardens contribute to urban greening efforts,
mitigating the effects of urban heat islands and promoting environmental sustainability with minimal maintenance requirements. The Costa del Sol’s favourable climate provides an ideal environment for both natural and artificial vertical gardens, allowing for year-round displays of colour and texture. Whether adorning residential balconies, commercial buildings, vertical gardens add a touch of natural elegance to the coastal landscape, blurring the boundaries between architecture and nature.
As symbols of innovation and ecological consciousness, beautiful vertical gardens - whether natural or artificialinspire awe and admiration, inviting residents and visitors alike to immerse themselves in the splendour of greenery amidst the vibrant Mediterranean backdrop.
Profitability of property investment
INVESTING in real estate is good business, if you have savings, buying a property will be more profitable than having it in the bank.
The real estate platform Idealista publishes its profitability index by provincial capitals every quarter. It analyses four products: housing, commercial premises, offices and garages. All generate good rental income, although some more than others.
Commercial premises and offices are the most profitable real estate investments in Malaga Province. The least profitable is buying and then renting a parking space, although it always pays more than a 10-year bond. In the first case, gross profitability in the first quarter of 2024 was over 8 per
cent. Offices are offering a yield of just over 7 per cent, slightly less than in December. There are many companies wanting to set up in the province and there is not enough space for all of them.
One of the solutions that is being developed at breakneck speed is coworking spaces and, despite the growing number of these types of spaces, their occupancy level is high and there are even some that are occupied by a single company.
With regard to housing, real estate also yields a good return, although slightly lower than the other sectors because the purchase price is so high. However, the yield is stable at around 6 per cent without taking resale into account.

Benefits of property maintenance
PROPERTY maintenance offers a multitude of benefits that contribute to the longevity, value, and overall well-being of a property. First and foremost, regular maintenance helps prevent costly repairs by addressing minor issues before they escalate into major problems. This proactive approach not only saves money but also ensures the property remains in good condition.
Furthermore, consistent property maintenance enhances the aesthetic appeal of the property. Well-maintained buildings and landscapes create a positive impression, attracting potential buyers or tenants and increasing the property’s market value. Additionally, a properly maintained property provides a safe and secure environment for its
occupants, reducing the risk of accidents or injuries. Property maintenance also plays a crucial role in energy efficiency. Regular checks and upgrades to essential systems, such as heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, contribute to lower utility costs and a smaller environmental footprint.
Moreover, well-maintained properties are more resilient to natural disasters and weather-related damage, minimising the risk of extensive and costly repairs. In summary, property maintenance is an essential investment that pays off in various ways, from cost savings and increased property value to creating a safe and aesthetically pleasing living or working environment.
Maintenance of a property typically falls under the responsibilities of property owners or landlords. However, some real estate agents may offer additional services or have connections with professionals in the industry who can help with property maintenance.
If you need assistance with property maintenance, it’s advisable to clarify this with your real estate agent upfront or discuss it with your property management company if you have one. Some real estate agents work closely with property management firms that can handle maintenance tasks on behalf of property owners. Alternatively, your agent might be able to recommend reliable contractors or maintenance services to assist you

Buying through a reputable agent and using a good locally based lawyer is still highly recommended. Countless numbers of people have had great experiences through their purchase of an apartment in communities and there are some advantages to this.
Many communities on the Costa Blanca have a high number of foreign residents, some living full time and some part time.
Communities can be very friendly places where people can share their knowledge and experiences of the area, help to solve problems, explain what the role of the Community Administrator is, and provide you with useful contacts and recommendations for builders, plumbers, or equipment suppliers which you may need.
Your neighbours can also give you hints about keeping cool in the summer and warm in the winter, where to go shopping, find Spanish lessons: the list is endless. There are some luxurious apartments available on the Costa in beautifully kept communities, so having budget restrictions doesn’t mean you can’t make your dreams a reality. Buying in a community with other foreigners around can make a simpler transition to your new home when a lack of Spanish may be a hindrance.
English is still the most widely spoken foreign language among the international community regardless of where they come from. Prices of apartments are rising in relation to the overall increase in property prices on the Costa Blanca, so it is still a great investment.

WELCOME to the tranquil embrace of retirement in Spain, where the Mediterranean charm meets a life of leisure. Find out some practicalities of making Spain your retirement sanctuary.
Seeking a secure neighbourhood that fosters a sense of community and is close to family is crucial. Living in a vibrant area throughout the year ensures a fulfilling lifestyle, avoiding the desolation of seasonal deadness. Assessing weather patterns, especially during winter months, is vital for comfort. Convenient access to shops within a 10-minute walk and nearby green spaces enhances relaxation.
Evaluate the proximity and quality of public transportation, as well as access to beaches within a 20-minute journey. Prioritise living near excellent healthcare facilities to support ageing gracefully. Consider the city’s cost of living and tax rates to align with financial goals.
Availability of recreational and social activities, along with nearby restaurants, enrich daily life. If golfing is a passion, ensure courses are within a 20-minute drive. Assess tax implications, especially if residing in Spain for over 180 days annually. Exploring rental options initially allows flexibility before committing to a purchase.
Entering retirement in Spain offers a chance to fully enjoy life’s pleasures. Take the time to unwind, explore new interests, and embrace the joys of this next chapter
IF you’re considering purchasing property in Spain and plan to use a bank to manage your payment, it’s essential to be aware of the fees involved. Most banks charge up to 0.6 per cent to process money from overseas and an additional 0.6 per cent for raising a Banker’s Draft to complete the property purchase. However, PropertyPay (provided by Currencies Direct) offers an alternative that not only helps you avoid these costs but also simplifies and expedites the buying process for your dream Spanish property. With PropertyPay you could save thousands on your purchase, while benefiting from excellent exchange rates and expert guidance for your currency transfers.

• Local bank accounts: Benefit from having local bank accounts, eliminating the need for international transfers and associated fees.

Home staging
Contrary to what you might think, it’s about more than just preparing the house for sale. Home staging is what you do after you’ve cleaned, de-cluttered, painted, made minor repairs; it’s all about dressing the house for sale.
Create a lifestyle people are looking for. Generally speaking, you want to play up what your neighbourhood or area is known for.

Luxury apartments in Malaga
THE average price of the apartments in Malaga’s new Sierra Blanca tower development is €1.3 million, although there are others for up to €8 million.
The jewels in the crown of the project, the two 500-metre penthouses, are on the market for €9.75 million and there are already interested buyers.
Potential buyers from around the world seem keen to buy. Czechs,
Poles, British, Dutch, Americans, Mexicans, Spaniards and even Japanese. All these flags are already flying at the luxury apartment tower built by Sierra Blanca Estates on the west coast of Malaga.
The variety of nationalities confirms the success of the development and the strength of Malaga as a new residential destination on a national and international level. The building,
designed by Carlos Lamela, has become the new architectural icon of this area, as well as a real estate reference for the hitherto non-existent high-end residential development in the capital of the Costa del Sol.
The complex, with a height of 71 metres and 21 floors, has 69 apartments and two duplexpenthouses. The first homes were
delivered at the beginning of 2024 and, for those buyers with deep pockets, the penthouses stand out; distributed over two floors, with private swimming pools featuring their own counter-current swimming system and access to the rooftop solarium of the tower.
Although the starting price of €9.75 million seems stratospheric, several voffers have already been confirmed.
Why Solar panels can be a good idea for your house
EMBRACING solar panels offers a myriad of benefits that extend far beyond mere electricity generation:
Cost Savings: By generating your own electricity from sunlight, you can substantially reduce or even eliminate reliance on traditional utility companies, resulting in significant long-term savings.
Environmental Impact: Solar energy is clean and renewable, producing no greenhouse gas emissions or air pollutants during operation, thus contributing to a healthier environment and mitigating climate change.
Energy Independence: Solar panels decrease dependence on external energy sources like fossil fuels, providing a sense of autonomy and resilience, particularly during energy supply disruptions or price fluctuations.
Property Value Enhancement: Homes equipped with solar panels often enjoy higher property values and faster sales, as prospective buyers increasingly prioritise energy-efficient features with long-term financial benefits.
Government Incentives: Various governmental incentives, such as tax credits and rebates, make solar energy more accessible by reducing initial installation costs.
Low Maintenance: Solar panels require minimal upkeep, typically limited to occasional cleaning and routine inspections, ensuring hassle-free operation for decades.
Energy Security: Harnessing abundant sunlight reduces the risk of energy supply disruptions caused by geopolitical conflicts or natural disasters, enhancing energy security and reducing vulnerability to external factors.
Job Creation: The growing solar industry creates jobs across manufacturing, installation, and maintenance sectors, supporting local economies and fostering sustainable growth.
Community Influence: Installing solar panels sets a positive example within communities, inspiring others to adopt renewable energy solutions and catalysing broader shifts towards sustainability.
Technological Advancements: Ongoing innovations in solar panel technology promise increased efficiency and affordability, ensuring access to future advancements and potential system upgrades for optimised performance and savings. Image: Solar panels /Save on Energy
Sail to the shade
FABRIC structures, such as shade sails, combine traditional building materials, metal, wood, stone, and glass - with a fabric membrane, typically designed under very high tension.
The most common application is the traditional awning, however shade sails, tension membranes, and retractable fabric roofs are becoming increasingly popular as people discover their cost and environmental benefits.
Shade Sails are pieces of fabric designed to create large shaded spaces. The concept of creating spaces with large pieces of material is not new. The existence of shade sails can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians and later the Greeks and Romans, where they were used to shade the crowds in the Coliseum of Rome. The Roman Armies were shaded from the draining effects of the sun with shade sails during wartime. It is a concept recently rediscovered in Australia in the early 1970s and spreading around the world.
When incorporated within existing architecture, large spaces can be repurposed. Fabric structures have massive advantages over structures made from traditional materials. They are lightweight and incorporate a lot less material, they can be efficiently engineered and installed, and structures such as shade sails can involve complex 3D geometrical patterns that enable unlimited scope in architectural creativity.

Building Dreams. Maximizing Returns. Code of good practice
PROPERTY owners and administrators in Andalucia have signed a ‘peace agreement’. The associations representing both groups have signed a code of good practice to avoid conflicts.
The explosion of tourist homes in residential buildings is a permanent source of conflict between those who want to make a profit by renting their homes to tourists and the rest of the community, who criticise the constant noise or the lack of security in the face of the constant coming and going of unknown people.
Now, the Association of Professionals of Tourist Homes and Apartments (AVVAPro) and the Council of Associations of Property Administrators of Andalucia have just signed a Code of Good Practice.
This code is based on respecting each other and stipulates a series of measures. For example, the owners of tourist accommodation undertake to inform their tenants about the community rules on noise, use of common areas, swimming pools, terraces, bicycle parking, rubbish, etc.
They will also place special emphasis on ensuring that tourists do not make noise when entering or leaving the property, especially at night; they will have a 24-hour emergency telephone number; they will inform the president, administrator or neighbour who requests it of the telephone number of the owner of the property or the company that manages it and they will prohibit parties in the property, especially stag or hen parties.
“This agreement is an example of a willingness to collaborate and we hope that the example will be extended to the rest of Spain,” said AVVAPro president Carlos Pérez-Lanzac.
Our team of project managers, architects, investors, and estate agents brings a comprehensive skillset to navigate the market and deliver exceptional results. Invest in the future, not just a property.
Example Investment Opportunity: 10 building plots next to each other with project and building license. Minimum Investment 250.000€, ROI 30%+

INCREASINGLY, investors interested in the Costa del Sol are torn between buying a property and renovating it to suit their needs or building a home from scratch to custom design. But in the latter case, how much would it cost to build a bespoke luxury home in a city like Marbella? According
to the exclusive real estate agency Pure Living Properties, around €5 million. The firm has published a guide to building luxury homes in which it quantifies the different costs that make up the sale price and includes the increase that, in the face of the latest wars and variations in infla-
tion, have been experienced by construction materials, land and the fees of professionals who are part of the process.
The first step in building an exclusive property is to select the plot or area that will house it. A 1,300 square metre plot on the Golden Mile, one of Marbella’s
most sought-after locations, costs around €1.13 million. The price of land becomes more expensiveup to €20 million for plots of 10,000 square metres - if it is in locations including Sierra Blanca, Los Altos de los Monteros or La Zagaleta. After the purchase of the land, the most important
step is the design of the property and construction, which has become very expensive in recent years.
“Taking into account the current market situation, the price for the construction of an average-sized luxury villa is around €2 million”, reported the real estate agency.
In the modern home, Feng Shui principles offer a blueprint for creating balance and harmony in living spaces. Here’s how these principles can be applied: A clutter-free environment is essential for allowing the smooth flow of energy (qi) throughout the space. By clearing clutter and organizing belongings, occupants can maintain tidiness and support positive energy circulation. Optimal furniture placement plays a crucial role in Feng Shui. Arranging furniture to facilitate the circulation of energy promotes comfort and functionality while avoiding obstructions to pathways

or direct alignment with doorways. Integration of natural elements brings a sense of connection with nature into the home. Incorporating wood, water features, plants, and stones enhances the overall ambiance and promotes a harmonious atmosphere.
A balanced color scheme is key to creating harmony in the home. By choosing colors that complement each other and align with the occupants’ preferences, a balanced and soothing environment can be achieved.
Lighting considerations are important in Feng Shui design. Maximizing natural light and balancing it with
artificial lighting helps create a well-lit and inviting space conducive to positive energy flow.
Enhancing chi flow involves strategic use of mirrors and curved shapes to redirect and soften energy in the home. By avoiding sharp angles and incorporating flowing lines, occupants can promote a sense of tranquility and balance. Personalized space design reflects the occupants’ lifestyle and needs. Creating designated areas for relaxation, work, and socializing supports balance and well-being in daily activities.
Embracing technology mindfully involves integrating electronic devices into the home with awareness of their impact on energy flow and relaxation. Limiting the presence of electronics in spaces designated for rest and relaxation helps maintain a harmonious environment.
Cultivating positive energy through meaningful decor and personal touches enhances the overall atmosphere of the home. Displaying artwork, photographs, and decor items that resonate with the occupants’ aspirations fosters a sense of joy and inspiration in the living space.

Barbecue on the beach

MANILVA is getting a head start on the summer and has already inaugurated the moragas season. Gema Zotano, the councillor responsible for Manilva’s beaches, the process to apply for free rental of any of the moraga boats is open. You can book
one of these boats for the first half of May through the website www.manilva.es. Thereafter, new dates will be opened every fortnight until September 30.
On the Costa del Sol, at various points along the beach, you can find a number of fishing boats filled with sand which are used
for moragas. A moraga is a traditional evening party usually held on the beach, typical of the coast of the province of Malaga and other parts of the Mediterranean coast of Andalucia. The fiesta has evolved throughout history. Originally, in the 19th century, it was held after the net was hauled in from the shallows and the fish caught were eaten on the beach, accompanied by guitar music and other entertainment.
Nowadays, the moragas are still celebrated, but without the pretext of fishing, but as a simple recreational event, where sardines or other types of fish, such as mackerel, are roasted over an open fire lit on a sand-filled fishing boat on the beach.
Remember you will need to bring along all your own facilities (fuel, food, drink, chairs, tables etc) as only the sand bed on the boat is provided. Most people start their moraga in the late afternoon as the sun is setting.

The Minister of Education in Generalitat Valenciana, Jose Antonio Rovira linked this “reorganisation” to the lack of students.
Yet the demonstration proved the high demand of the EOI. Javea’s centre has been facilitating more than 100 students for the past 20 years.
Almeria Tour of Almeria
THE Vuelta Ciclista a Almeria is set to captivate cycling enthusiasts with its eighth edition on April 27 and 28.
Organised by Total Sport Mediterranean in conjunction with the A Todo Marcha Sports Club, this prestigious two-day amateur cycling event will showcase approximately 200 cyclists from across the province. This year’s tour promises an exhilarating adventure through Almeria’s rugged landscapes, including Levante Almeriense, Valle del Almanzora, and Filabres-Tabernas.
The first stage on Saturday, April 27 will cover a challenging 98 km loop starting and ending in Los Gallardos. The event will conclude on Sunday, April 28.
Hyundai Almerialva steps up as the official vehicle sponsor, ensuring a smooth execution of the event. The competition underscores the region’s growing prominence in Spain’s amateur cycling scene.
Costa Calida Must-see Murcia
MURCIA has been dubbed the most underrated destination by National Geographic. Despite being located on the trendy Mediterranean Sea, and boasting one of Europe’s warmest climates, Murcia has long remained off the beaten path for international travellers.
In 2023, Murcia welcomed over 1.7 million visitors, marking a significant milestone in its tourism growth. Murcia’s rise in appeal lies in its cultural heritage.
The ancient city of Cartagena, founded over two millennia ago, stands as a testament to its rich history, filled with ancient ruins and architectural marvel.
Murcia’s beaches are another draw, stretching 155 miles along the Costa Calida, or ‘Warm Coast,’ aptly named for its warm waters. Despite its beauty, Murcia remains affordable compared to other tourist hubs.

Colour perception
IT’S a common misconception that dogs are colour blind and only see shades of gray. In reality, dogs do see colours, but their perception is different from humans. Dogs have dichromatic vision, meaning they have two types of colour receptors (cones) in their eyes, compared to the three humans have.
Dogs can see shades of blue and yellow, but they struggle to distinguish between red and green, which appear more brownish-gray to them. This colour vision is similar to what a human with red-green colour blindness experiences. Understanding how dogs perceive the world helps us better design toys and training tools that are visually appealing to them. It also explains why certain colours are more engaging.
Calming scared cats
HELPING a cat cope with sudden noises involves creating a safe and secure environment and using calming techniques. First, provide a designated safe space where your cat can retreat when scared. Second, consider using soundproofing or white noise machines to dampen the impact of loud noises. Gradually exposing your cat to recorded sounds at low volumes, followed by treats and positive reinforcement, can desensitise them over time.

ACE CHARITY ‘El Refugio’ in La Cala de Mijas is a registered charity. We have on average 275 dogs in our care and we receive no help from the town hall or the Andalucian government. We desperately need foster homes and adoptants for our many dogs, especially the small ones and puppies who do not do well in a big shelter. We are grateful for any help offered, including donations of food and blankets. Visiting times are from 13.00 to 15.00 and you can always turn up or make an appointment by calling Denise on 669 018 736. Our website is www.ace-charity. org where you can view all the dogs in our care. (93320)

Come and meet our current rescues, learn about our work and how you may be able to help. Run solely by a small team of dedicated volunteers, the Centre is located between Alhaurin el Grande and Coin in Comm. de Viña Borrego behind Venta Miralmonte. SEPE the horse and donkey charity is open to the public at weekends from 10.00 to 5.00. Volunteers are much needed in all departments and are welcome at any time. For our riding for the disabled classes, we are also in need of extra helpers. We are nationally registered by the Spanish Ministry of the Interior (164640) but only with your support can we give the equine a voice. If you can just commit to 2 or 3 euros a month it will really help make a difference. You can find us at Lauro Golf Equestrian Centre, Alqueria, Alhaurin de la Torre. SOS ANIMAL REFUGE we have dogs, young and old looking for homes. Some of our dogs have been with us for some time and would love to find a cosy spot to curl up in and a knee on which to rest their heads. If you have room in your heart and home we would love to hear from you. We do not put our dogs to sleep - no matter how old, they are safe with us. For day to day needs and to pay for veterinary care, we much appreciate the support we receive. We desperately need items to sell on our market stall to help raise funds and are happy to come and collect. So, if you are having a clear-out, please contact us on 605 227 155. If you would like to know more about rehoming, please call 653 257 875. Visit our website www.sos-animals.org or please phone Sandy on 952 385 923 or 666 814 056 if you would like to make a donation or help in any way. (93317)

THE latest Morgan Plus Four combines the historic Malvern company’s blend of craftsmanship and en gineering to create the latest incarnation of their longest running nameplate, The latest Plus Four features a series of design, dynamic and technological enhancements.
The design has sim plified the look of the car with the introduction of new lighting, wings, front splitter, rear diffuser, and floating front and rear number plate plinths.
Latest Morgan Plus Four launched by iconic Malvern car maker
1950 at the Earl’s Court Motor Show in London, the Plus 4 has proven to be one of the company’s most popular models.
body, which is made using age-old techniques handed down through generations, is married to an ultra-modern aluminium platform with the latest braking, suspension, and electronic systems.
At Morgan, there is no ‘bespoke’ department. Every Plus Four that enters production is bespoke as standard.
Many of the new
parts have been designed in-house and manufactured exclusively for Morgan. Whilst the changes are subtle, the
attention-to-detail and rigorous testing process of the new parts represents the level of detail upon which the company is now operating.
The Plus Four is available in manual and automatic transmission variants and is powered by the latest BMW 2.0 litre engine. Morgan is one of the very few nonBMW owned compa-
nies that are allowed to use the German manufacturer’s power units. There is a change to the standard suspension consisting of new spring rates and re-valved dampers. In addition, an optional Dynamic Handling Pack - extensively developed alongside suspension experts, Nitron, -will be available from launch. First introduced in
Named Plus 4 due to its increased power over the 4-4 - the first four-wheeled Morgan - which was introduced in 1936.
Like every four-wheeled Morgan produced today, the Plus Four combines a blend of traditional craftsmanship and appropriate modern technology, a philosophy which the company refers to as ‘21st Century Coachbuilding’.
Each aluminium body is hand-formed over an ash wood frame. This
Beyond the almost endless combination of colourways and options available to configure, prospective owners can go beyond this and request additional materials and features for their new Plus Four.
This approach ensures that every Plus Four built is genuinely a ‘one-off’.
The new Morgan Plus Four is available to order now, with the first models going into production this month. Prices start from €88,366/£76,141 whether you opt for the manual or automatic transmission version.
