Barbecue on the beach

David Hart

MANILVA is getting a head start on the summer and has already inaugurated the moragas season. Gema Zotano, the councillor responsible for Manilva’s beaches, the process to apply for free rental of any of the moraga boats is open. You can book

one of these boats for the first half of May through the website www.manilva.es. Thereafter, new dates will be opened every fortnight until September 30.

On the Costa del Sol, at various points along the beach, you can find a number of fishing boats filled with sand which are used

for moragas. A moraga is a traditional evening party usually held on the beach, typical of the coast of the province of Malaga and other parts of the Mediterranean coast of Andalucia. The fiesta has evolved throughout history. Originally, in the 19th century, it was held after the net was hauled in from the shallows and the fish caught were eaten on the beach, accompanied by guitar music and other entertainment.

Nowadays, the moragas are still celebrated, but without the pretext of fishing, but as a simple recreational event, where sardines or other types of fish, such as mackerel, are roasted over an open fire lit on a sand-filled fishing boat on the beach.

Remember you will need to bring along all your own facilities (fuel, food, drink, chairs, tables etc) as only the sand bed on the boat is provided. Most people start their moraga in the late afternoon as the sun is setting.

Avocado wins best tapa Five Guys in Puerto Banus

THE Five Guys hamburger restaurant is expanding in Spain. On Monday April 22, the new restaurant on Julio Iglesias Avenue in Puerto Banus opened. It is the chain’s 31st location in Spain and the second in the province of Malaga, the other located at Plaza Mayor, in Malaga City.

The company, which became popular after former President of the United States Barack Obama visited one of their premises, jokingly point out that they are now looking for another public figure to become a fan of their hamburgers: “We are opening in the street named after one of our world-famous artists, Julio Iglesias. We’re sure to make him our fan” reported a local newspaper.

The brand has been looking forward to opening a business in Puerto Banus for a long time. “It was a good opportunity as we have been received well in the restaurant we already have in Malaga, we wanted to conquer other parts of the province and what better way to

start than in Puerto Banus”, explained the director of Five Guys in Spain and Portugal, Daniel Agromayor in an interview.

“Since we opened our first restaurant on the Costa del Sol a couple of years ago: the Five Guys located in McArthurGlen Designer Outlet, we have been able to see how hungry Malaga is for Five Guys burgers and fries.”

In addition, they know that by locating in Puerto Banus they are going to reach the people of Malaga, but above all, international tourism. “We know that all those citizens of the world who visit the Golden Mile and who are already our fans in their countries of origin are waiting for us,” concluded Five Guys.

ESTEPONA Town Hall has announced that the Restaurant ‘Avocado’, with the tapa ‘Saquito de rabo de toro con crema de jalapeño’ (Oxtail with jalapeño cream) has been chosen as the Best Tapa of this year’s competition by the majority of customers. The restaurant wins a plaque and a cash prize of €1,000.

A total of 27 establishments from the town centre and the outskirts of Estepona took part in the competition, which was held on the weekend of April 13 and 14 as part of the ‘Estepona lives its streets’ event, and 5,000 ‘tapas passports’ were handed out to enter the competition.

In addition to voting for their favourite tapa, customers who had visited at least five establishments participated in the draw for numerous prizes, including free tickets to various shows and concerts scheduled at the Felipe VI Auditorium and the Plaza de Toros, a weekend in Granada, tasting dinners, Thalasso Spa circuits, and household appliances, among others.

Estepona councillor for Fiestas, Macarena Diánez, thanked the collaborating companies, as well as the bars and restaurants of the municipality that have participated in the Ruta de la Tapa, so that the citizens, “can check out the excellence of the local gastronomy.”
