Walking from Darkness Into Light:

FOR years, Biddy Mulligans has been more than just a local haunt; it’s been a landmark, a starting point for directions, and a gathering place for many. This year, it takes on a new role as one of the venues supporting Darkness into Light.

There are three official walks along the Coast. Biddy Mulligans, La Cala de Mijas - The Blue Dolphin Chiringuito, Estepona - Plaza El Reno, Benalmadena. For the Mijas walk we are meeting at Biddy’s from 6am - we will walk from there to just a little past El Oceano on the boardwalk and then back towards La Cala where we see the sunrise. Michael O’ Halloran started the first Darkness Into Light walk in Estepona in 2016. Dave & Dee, the faces behind Biddy Mulligans, are urging everyone to rise early on May 11 and join in the walk from darkness into light.

This year marks the fourth annual walk in La Cala de Mijas, a testament to the community’s dedication to supporting two important charities, Pieta House and Afesol Salud Mental.

The symbolism of starting in darkness and walking into the light resonates deeply, reflecting the journey of those who have been touched by suicide or mental health struggles. It’s a message of hope,

unity, and support, bringing together a community to offer solace and understanding. Participants are encouraged to wear their previous years’ t-shirts, maximising the funds directed towards the charities. However, newcomers are warmly welcomed, with t-shirts available at Biddy Mulligans on Friday May 10. Registration is open online.

The organisers eagerly anticipate welcoming familiar faces and newcomers alike. You can register at www. darknessintolight.ie and choose the location of your walk here on the coast.

On Friday May 3 at 11am, at Play Restaurant&Events close to Faro de Mijas, Ana-Maria Ignat-Berget and friends will be hosting a beneficial brunch called: ‘From Darkness into Light with Art, Poetry and Music’. The tickets are €30, including food, drinks, entertainment and a €10 donation for Pieta and Afesol.

BRING your best friend for a charity dog walk on Estepona Paseo on Saturday May 11. The choir Camarata Sotogrande have found a new way to support ADANA (Association for the Rights of Abandoned Animals) a charitable organisation in Estepona run by volunteers.

No, it’s not a sing along event, it’s a walk along activity for people with dogs or simply dog lovers. Starting

Man’s best friend

from Bella Ciao at Avenida España 1 on the boardwalk at midday on Saturday May 11 and then walking to the Marina in the port and back for lunch for those who would like to stay on and socialise. ADANA is a charitable organisation on the Costa del Sol run by volunteers, which provides shelter and care for abandoned, sick and injured dogs, while seeking new homes for them.

They are always desperate for funds at ADANA as it costs them around €10,000 per month to run the shelter and help every dog they come in to contact with. So bring your dog for a walk to help the work of this organisation; you can buy an ADANA bandana for your dog for just €10, showing your support for an important cause.

And the Camarata Choir will reward participants with some musical treats afterwards. For more information please email: sing@camaratasoto grande.org.

Roman Oasis

ONE of the Costa del Sol’s longest serving purveyors of food and entertainment, Paul Hickling reopened the Roman Oasis in Manilva on Wednesday May 1.

Being a man of many talents, Paul recreated this iconic spot as a minigolf course a few years ago but he still offers a great barbecue and musical entertainment on certain days.

Special guest singer for opening day was the very popular Thomas Henry, known for his stunningly accurate impersonations of both Sammy Davis Jr and the artist known as Prince.

There have always been special characters who have become legends on the Costa del Sol and there is no doubt that one of the foremost is Paul Hickling who keeps having to add new chapters to his autobiography My Roman Oasis which is a fascinating read.

Most days, you can start playing mini golf from 12 noon but keep an eye out for the odd naughty parrot and it’s best to make a reservation online where you can also find out about special events.

The Emperor will be there to welcome you.

AC/DC is an Australian rock band formed in Sydney in 1973 by Scottish-born brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Their music has been

variously described as hard rock, blues rock, and heavy metal, but the band themselves call it simply ‘rock ‘n’ roll’. Experience almost two hours of their greatest hits from this quintet through a unique show in Europe.

This project was originally created in the 90s, and then suspended until 2009, before coming back to life for several shows per year to share the best of this classic band, from fans and for fans.
