Chicago comes to Malaga

THE musical ‘Chicago’ arrives this summer at the Teatro Cervantes in Malaga having performed to more than 34 million spectators in 38 countries, won more than 60 international awards including a Tony for best musical and a great production that triumphed at the Teatro Apolo in Madrid. The quintessential Broadway musical will be staged between July 18 and August 4 in Malaga, with 22 performances of the same production that can currently be seen at the Ambassador Theatre in New York, starring 24 performers.

Tickets are already on sale in this Malaga stop on a tour that will take the show to the biggest theatres in Spain until 2025. With this national tour, the unstoppable success of the legendary show created by three of the greatest exponents of

musical theatre of all time, John Kander, Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, continues 27 years after its premiere on Broadway.

‘Chicago’ is a story about greed, murder and show business, filled with hits like ‘All that jazz’ and ‘Razzle dazzle’. Set amidst the flamboyant decadence of the 1920s, ‘Chicago’ tells the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer, who viciously murders her lover when he threatens to leave her. Desperate to avoid conviction, Roxie deceives the public, the media and her cellmate and rival, Velma Kelly, and hires the most skilled lawyer in the city of Chicago, Billy Flynn.

The show is based on a play published in 1926 by journalist Maurine Dallas, based on the real crimes she herself had covered for the Chicago Tribune. It was adapted into a film in 2002, directed by Rob Marshall and starring Renée Zellwe-

Charity gala

THE Cesare Scariolo Foundation is holding a charity dinner on Saturday June 15 at Barbillón Marbella in Guadalmina Baja with the support of The American College in Spain, which will make the cultural contribution to the event: the performance of flamenco group Curro de Candela.

The charity gala dinner organised by the Cesare Scariolo Foundation in 2024 aims to raise the necessary funds to build a gymnasium at the Maternity Hospital in Malaga to enable the rehabilitation of children suffering from cancer. The event, which is celebrating its 14th year, expects the participation of more than 200 diners, according to the organisers. The American College in Spain (ACS) has financed the performance of the dancer Curro de Candela, the young

last representative of the dynasty of artists started by his uncle José Greco. This dancer and music producer from Madrid boasts an artistic career that has taken him to all the main theatres and companies around the world over the last 15 years. The American College in Spain’s alliance with the Cesare Scariolo Foundation, “fits in with ACS’s policy of supporting charitable causes through culture, sport and the environment,” explained its director Melissa Butler in the press release.

The proceeds from the gala dinner will go entirely to the Materno Infantil Sports Club project, which consists of the construction of a gymnasium that will promote physical exercise among young paediatric cancer patients during the different stages of their treatment and recovery.

Misake Restaurant: Luxury buffet in Mijas

MISAKE Restaurant has recently opened in Mijas, introducing a novel Japanese buffet-style dining experience that is quickly becoming the talk of the town. As you step inside, the thoughtfully designed interior immediately transports you to Japan, making it clear that Misake is more than just a place to eat - it’s an immersive journey.

The large, tastefully decorated dining rooms cater to both group gatherings and private parties, ensuring that every dining occasion is special. With warm temperatures on the way, Misake’s superb air conditioning provides a welcome respite, while the beautiful outdoor seating area offers a charming alternative for those who prefer to dine under the sky. This versatility in dining environments adds to

the appeal of Misake, making it suitable for any occasion.

One of the unique aspects of Misake is its innovative ordering system. Upon arrival, guests are presented with an iPad. This tech-forward approach might take a moment to get used to, but it allows for a seamless dining experience once you get the hang of it.

The menu is vast, making it an excellent opportunity for groups to sample a wide variety of dishes. The portions are small, allowing you to try multiple items without feeling overwhelmed. However at one point we did have no space on our table. You can order up to 10 choices at a time, and the food

Folklore & fusion

THE Rosa Fina Flamenco Festival in Casares is being held over three days from Thursday June 27 to Saturday June 29. In its seventh year, the Rosa Fina festival provides a flamenco experience with a programme that combines singing, dancing, guitar playing, folklore and fusion in a very special setting.

The performances are held in the historic centre of Casares, in the area of the old Capuchin Convent and in the Blas Infante Cultural Centre, located in the grounds of the castle, an old 13th century Arab fortress that sits atop the town centre.

“An incomparable setting for an excellent programme that combines tradition and avant-garde,” said the mayor.

explained that, “we will have three days of performances that will begin on Thursday with a premiere show produced by the festival itself that combines the singing of Tomás Perrate and the guitar playing of Paco de Amparo, with the projection of live video creations by the painter Patricio Hidalgo and the visual artist Calde Ramírez.”

On Friday June 28 the evening will begin with a performance by Los Malagatos, a folklore group from Malaga who

will present a repertoire of popular songs from the province of Malaga. This will be followed by a singing recital by José Valencia, one of the most serious and powerful voices of the ‘jondo’ art, accompanied by the guitar of Juan Requena.

The festival will close on the night of Saturday June 29 with performances by the guitar duo Juan Martín and Chaparro from Málaga, the dancer Rafael Ramírez from Estepona, singer Sandra Carrasco and guitarist David de Arahal.

Angie Turner from The Children’s Trust detailed the charity’s history and the fundraiser’s purpose: to raise more than £30,000 to purchase five specialist wheelchairs and two hoist systems for children with severe disabilities and by 10pm this was achieved thanks to the generosity of all as well as a final top-up from host Daniel Shamoon.

Pole dancing show

THE stage of the Alameda Alfonso XI in San Roque will host on Friday June 14 at 9pm, a Pole Dance exhibition by the students of the Power Pole Varinia Academy with the collaboration of the council of San Roque. The Power Pole Varinia Academy organises at the end of each course the annual exhibition of the students who are part of their academy. This year the members, who are aged from five years old, will perform, both duets and groups, corresponding to the 2023/2024 course in the pavilion or stage set up in the Alameda Alfonso XI in San Roque.

Pole dance is a discipline which consists of performing choreographies, exercises and figures on a rotating pole.

It requires a lot of perseverance, as it is a very physically demanding sport. Varinia Ruiz, director of the Academy said at a previous show that one of her objectives was to show that pole dancing, “is more than just a night dance. It is a sport with a lot of training, a lot of discipline and very hard.” She added that, “it consists of training using your own weight, and the classes are very enjoyable. In short, something new that we can bring to San Roque.” Some 35 students from the Power Pole Varinia Academy, aged between five and 40, from San Roque Ciudad and the Guadiaro Valley, took part in the previous show and although Ruiz has been running the Power Dance groups for years, she only opened the academy in September 2023 in Guadiaro.

Stand-up for Estepona

Michael Carrington

COMEDY night returns to Louie Louie Live in Estepona on Thursday June 27 from 8.30pm until 11pm. A number of comedians will be in Estepona for another hilarious night of stand-up comedy featuring a line-up of fantastic comedians in the form of Dan Jones, LJ DA Funk, Josephine Lacey and regular host and compere, Nik Coppin.

Dan Jones won Breakthrough Comedian of the Year in Amused Moose National New Comic awards 2019, and also Rising Star New Act of the Year finalist 2019.

He started his stand up career in 2018, soon establishing himself as one of London’s fastest rising comedians by reaching the finals of comedy competitions. “Definitely one to watch,” said Rhod Gilbert.

LJ Da Funk is the brainchild of Zak Splijt. A selfstyled New York gangster, he is loud, brash, and full of energy. LJ tells jokes that are ostensibly idiotic but with wit and wisdom bubbling under the surface.

Josephine Lacey first came onto the London comedy circuit in October 2008. Drawing on her

Jamaican-Irish heritage and life experiences, she delivers her material with an honest humour and a natural raw energy.

British stand-up comedian Nik Coppin has performed all over the world and developed an international following. Born and bred in London and now based on the south coast of England in the city of Brighton he has spent over 20 years becoming a global circuit comedian.

Tickets for the event are on sale via the Eventbrite website for €20.38, don’t miss out as stand up returns to Estepona.
